Background: Primary tracheal tumors are considered uncommon in veterinary medicine and among them extranodal tracheal lymphoma, which is a neoplastic type, has rarely been described, especially with the use of immunophenotyping. Consequently, there is a lack of knowledge inherent to the characteristics of this tumor type in felines and as a result little information on how to deal with animals affected by this disease. Therefore, there is a need for more studies focusing on this matter. The objective of this work is to report a case of extranodal B cell lymphoma in the trachea of a domestic cat and point out the clinical and pathological characteristics of this neoplastic type. Case: A 5-year-old domestic cat, of an oriental breed, was taken to a veterinary clinic exclusively for cats in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. The main complaint was difficulty in breathing and loss of appetite and historical data included intolerance to exercise. A clinical examination confirmed inspiratory dyspnea and upper respiratory sounds. Hematological and serum biochemical exams did not evidence any noteworthy changes and the cat was considered negative for feline viral leukemia and feline immunodeficiency viruses through serological and molecular testing. However, in the radiographic examination of the thoracic cervical region, an opacity was observed that occluded part of the tracheal lumen and this was suggestive of a mass in the initial third of the trachea, measuring 0.5 cm in diameter. The animal was stabilized and then 24 h after admission underwent inspection of the oral cavity and a biopsy of the tracheal mass was performed. Cytology of the specimen was suggestive of lymphoma. The treatment of choice was: lomustine with a single, oral dose of 10 mg; vincristine sulfate with a single intravenous dose of 0.75 mg/m²; and methylprednisolone acetate with a single...(AU)

Purpose To investigate the protective effect of Ganoderma lucidum on testicular torsion/detorsion (T/D)-induced ischemia-reperfusion (I/R) injury. Methods Thirty male Wistar albino rats were randomly categorized into 3 groups: Group 1: sham, Group 2 ( T/D): 2,5 hours of ischemia and 7 days of reperfusion, Group 3 (T/D+ G. lucidum ): 2,5 hours of ischemia and 7 days of reperfusion and 7 days of 20 mg/kg via gastric gavage G. lucidum polysaccharides per day. Biochemical assays of Malondialdehyde (MDA), superoxide dismutase (SOD), Catalase (CAT), Glutathione (GSH) levels , histopathology and expression levels of VEGF and Bcl-2 with immunohistochemical methods were examined in testicular tissue. Results G. lucidum treatment was found to have prevented the T/D-induced I/R injury by decreasing MDA levels of the testis. SOD, CAT and GSH activities were decreased in group 2, while they were increased in group 3 (p<0.001) and significant improvement in the tube diameter was observed in group 3. Bcl-2-positive germinal cells were lowered in group 3 compared to the group 2. VEGF expression showed an increase in group 2, whereas it decreased in group 3. Conclusion The antioxidant G. lucidum is thought to induce angiogenesis by reducing the apoptotic effect in testicular torsion-detorsion.(AU)

The immunophenotype is regarded as an independent prognostic factor in high-grade lymphomas, seeing that lymphomas of T-cell origin are associated with shorter survival time. Although a number of studies have evaluated the immunophenotypical profile of lymphoma in the USA and Europe, Brazilian research on the matter remains scarce. Exact characterization of the histopathological type is crucial to establish proper treatment and prognosis. This study evaluated the database of immunohistochemistry laboratories that perform immunophenotyping of canine lymphoma in Brazil. A total of 203 cases of multicentric lymphoma were classified according to the WHO classification. Immunophenotyping was able to identify 71.4% lymphomas of B-cell line, 27.1% of T-cell line and 1.5% of non-B cells and non-T cell lines. Diffuse large B-cell lymphoma was the most common with 59.1% of the cases. Among T-cell lymphomas, lymphoblastic was the most common (11.33% of the cases). Even though canine lymphomas tend to be high-grade, indolent lymphomas comprised 11.82% of the cases and T-zone lymphoma was the most prevalent (8.86%). The immunophenotype of multicentric lymphoma in Brazil is similar to those in other parts of the world, which suggests similar etiologic factors to the development of this disease.(AU)

Purpose: To investigate the effect of melatonin on uterine tissue in the ovariectomized rat model. Methods: Fourty Wistar albino rats were divided into four groups for histologic and immunohistochemical examination. The rats were first numbered randomly and then randomly divided into 4 equal groups: control (group 1), torsion (group 2), torsion+detorsion (group 3) and torsion+detorsion+melatonin (group 4) groups. In addition, four Wistar albino rats were used for western blot analysis in each group. And also, malondialdehyde (MDA) levels were measured biochemically in all rats. Results: The histopathological examination of the uterine tissue in rats ovarectomized showed a degeneration in uterine glands, dilation of blood vessels in the internal layer with a thrombosis and bleeding, abnormal nucleuses and vacuolated cytoplasm above and below the nucleus. In torsion group, the apoptotic cells increased in luminal epithelium and gland cells. In the melatonin group showed that the Bcl2 negative effect on the uterine epithelium and did not lead to apoptotic cells. Conclusion: The increase in vascular endothelial growth factor expression resulted in the rearrangement of endothelial cell growth and the induction of angiogenesis.(AU)

Background: B cell lymphoma with Mott cell differentiation is rarely reported in dogs. This neoplasms has been diagnosed in the gastrointestinal tract and therefore is considered the differential diagnosis of obstruction by foreign body, enteritis and other intestinal neoplasms. The objective of the present study was to describe macroscopic, microscopic and immunohistochemical findings of a B cell lymphoma with Mott cell differentiation in the gastrointestinal tract of a dog.Case: A 7-year-old male German Shepherd dog was referred to necropsy with a mass 12 cm in diameter in the ileum-cecocolic junction, compromising mesenteric lymph nodes. Cytology showed two types of lymphoid cells. Approximately 80-90% of cells were round, with large cytoplasm containing numerous basophilic inclusion corpuscles, round nuclei, condensed chromatin, inconspicuous nucleoli, moderate anisokaryosis and marked anisocytosis. The other cells were round, with scarce basophilic cytoplasm, round nuclei, condensed chromatin and inconspicuous nucleoli. Mild anisokaryosis and anisocytosis and mitotic figures were sometimes identified. Histology revealed the predominance of round cells, with large cytoplasm containing numerous eosinophilic corpuscles (Russel bodies). Neoplastic cells were PAS and PTAH-positive, and toluidine blue-negative. Immunohistochemistry revealed positive immunoreactivity to antibodie...(AU)

This study aimed to describe a digestive lymphoma in a female cat with twelve years old, cross breed and negative for feline leukemia (FeLV) and feline immunodeficiency virus (FIV). During physical examination was observed a moderate dehydration and abdominal pain. During transabdominal ultrasound was observed a spleen size increase with anecogenic areas with moderate vascularization, suggestive for tumor. Histopathologic examination of tumor was spleen lymphoma - lymphoblastic lymphoma. Immunohistochemical examination classification was B lymphocytes cells tumor. Chemotherapy with vincristine sulphate and prednisone, followed by total splenectomy was performed. Animal demonstrated improvements after treatment and three months after was diagnosed a liver lymphoma and the owner asks for euthanasia. The present case report shows tnecessity of chemotherapy to control this type of tumor, to increase the quality and patient survival. Digestive lymphoma with high rate of mitosis can be observed in cat with over 10 years old without being associated with infection by FIV or FeLV.
