Sea cucumbers frequently expel their guts in response to predators and an aversive environment, a behavior perceived as releasing repellents involved in chemical defense mechanisms. To investigate the chemical nature of the repellent, the viscera of stressed sea cucumbers (Apostichopus japonicus) in the Yellow Sea of China were collected and chemically analyzed. Two novel non-holostane triterpene glycosides were isolated, and the chemical structures were elucidated as 3ꞵ-O-[ꞵ-D-glucopyranosyl-(1→2)-ꞵ-D-xylopyranosyl]-(20S)-hydroxylanosta-7,25-diene-18(16)-lactone (1) and 3ꞵ-O-[ꞵ-D-quinovopyranosyl-(1→2)-ꞵ-D-xylopyranosyl]-(20S)-hydroxylanosta-7,25-diene-18(16)-lactone (2) by spectroscopic and mass-spectrometric analyses, exemplifying a triterpene glycoside constituent of an oligosaccharide containing two sugar-units and a non-holostane aglycone. Zebrafish embryos were exposed to various doses of 1 and 2 from 4 to 96 hpf. Compound 1 exposure showed 96 h-LC50 41.5 µM and an increased zebrafish mortality rates in roughly in a dose- and time-dependent manner. Compound 2, with different sugar substitution, exhibited no mortality and moderate teratogenic toxicity with a 96 h-EC50 of 173.5 µM. Zebrafish embryos exhibited teratogenic effects, such as reduced hatchability and total body length. The study found that triterpene saponin from A. japonicus viscera had acute toxicity in zebrafish embryos, indicating a potential chemical defense role in the marine ecosystem.

INTRODUCTION: Worldwide, ERAS® Society guidelines have ushered in a new era of perioperative care. The purpose of this systematic review is to compare published core elements and pharmacotherapy recommendations embedded within ERAS® Society abdominal and thoracic surgery (ATS) guidelines. Determining whether a consensus exists for pharmacological core items would make future guideline preparation for similar surgeries more standardized and could improve patient care by reducing unnecessary protocol variations. METHODS: From the ERAS® Society website as of May 2023, 16 current ERAS® published ATS guidelines were included in the analysis to determine consensus and differing statements regarding each ERAS® perioperative and pharmacotherapy-related item. The aims were to (a) determine whether a consensus for each item could be derived, (b) identify gaps in ERAS® protocol development, and (c) propose potential research directions for addressing the identified gaps in the literature. RESULTS: Core items with consensus included: preoperative smoking and alcohol cessation; avoiding bowel reparation and fasting; multimodal preanesthetic, perioperative analgesia, and postoperative nausea and vomiting regimens; low molecular weight heparins for in-hospital and at-home venous thromboembolism prophylaxis; antibiotic prophylaxis; skin preparation; goal-directed perioperative fluid management with balanced crystalloids; perioperative nutrition care; ileus prevention with peripherally-acting mu receptor antagonists; and glucose control. CONCLUSION: While consensus was found for aspects of 21 current ERAS® guideline core items related to pharmacotherapy choice, details related to doses, regimen, timing of administration as well as unique aspects pertaining to specific surgeries remain to be researched and harmonized to promote guideline consistency and further optimize patient outcomes.

Sea cucumbers release chemical repellents from their guts when they are in danger from predators or a hostile environment. To investigate the chemical structure of the repellent, we collected and chemically analyzed the viscera of stressed sea cucumbers (Apostichopus japonicus) in the Yellow Sea of China. Two undescribed triterpene glycosides (1 and 2), together with a known cladoloside A (3), were identified and elucidated as 3ß-O-{2-O-[ß-d-quinovopyranosyl]-4-O-[3-O-methyl-ß-d-glucopyranosyl-(1→3)-ß-d-glucopyranosyl]-ß-d-xylopyranosyl}-holosta-9(11),25(26)-dien-16-one (1), 3ß-O-{2-O-[ß-d-glucopyranosyl]-4-O-[3-O-methyl-ß-d-glucopyranosyl-(1→3)-ß-d-glucopyranosyl]-ß-d-xylopyranosyl}-holosta-9(11),25(26)-dien-16-one (2), 3ß-O-{2-O-[3-O-methyl-ß-d-glucopyranosyl-(1→3)-ß-d-xylopyranosyl-(1→4)-ß-d-quinovopyranosyl]-ß-d-xylopyranosyl}-holosta-9(11),25(26)-dien-16-one (3) by spectroscopic analysis, including HR-ESI-MS and NMR spectra. Compounds 1, 2, and 3 display embryonic toxicity, as indicated by their 96-hour post-fertilization lethal concentration (96 hpf-LC50) values of 0.289, 0.536, and 0.091 µM, respectively. Our study discovered a class of triterpene glycoside compounds consisting of an oligosaccharide with four sugar units and a holostane aglycone. These compounds possess embryotoxicity and may serve as chemical defense molecules in marine benthic ecosystems.

BACKGROUND: Observational studies have suggested a potential association between abdominal viscera volume and increased risk of stroke. However, the causal relationship remains unclear. This study aims to utilize Mendelian randomization (MR) to explore the genetic causal relationship between them. METHODS: We conducted MR analysis to study the causal effects of five abdominal viscera volumes on stroke. The genetic variations of abdominal viscera volume were obtained from the UK Biobank, and the summary data for stroke and ischemic stroke were acquired from the MEGASTROKE consortium. This study employed inverse variance weighting (IVW), MR Egger, and weighted median methods. IVW served as the primary MR analysis method, supplemented by other sensitivity analyses to validate the robustness of the results. RESULTS: We found that liver volume can causally increase the risk of stroke [odds ratio (OR): 1.13, 95 % confidence interval (CI): 1.03-1.25, P = 0.013] and ischemic stroke (OR: 1.14, 95 % CI: 1.03-1.26, P = 0.012). No causal relationships between other abdominal viscera volumes and stroke and ischemic stroke appeared to be present (P > 0.05). Sensitivity analyses confirmed the robustness of the results. CONCLUSION: Our research findings indicate a causal relationship between liver volume and stroke, highlighting the potential role of liver volume in the onset of stroke. However, further basic and clinical research is needed to delve into the specific mechanisms underlying the relationship between liver volume and stroke, and to implement interventions aimed at reducing the impact of liver volume on stroke risk.

Chicken meat production has increased over the years, leading to a proportional increase in waste generation, which often contains high levels of proteins, such as viscera. Therefore, this study aimed to investigate the enzymatic hydrolysis of chicken viscera proteins as a strategy to value solid waste from the poultry industry. The hydrolysates were characterized for their antioxidant properties and molecular weight distribution. Additionally, the enzymatic hydrolysis process was scaled up from 125 mL flasks with 50 mL of protein solution to 3 L using a 6 L bioreactor. The enzymatic hydrolysis of chicken viscera proteins using a binary mixture of proteases (85.25 U/mL of each enzyme, Alcalase and Flavourzyme, totaling 170.5 U/mL) resulted in an increase of up to 245% in 2,2-azinobis (3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulfonic acid) (ABTS) radical scavenging, 353% 2,2-diphenyl-1-picryl-hydrazyl (DPPH) in radical scavenging, 69% in Ferric Reducing Antioxidant Power Assay (FRAP) and 146% in total reducing capacity (TRC). The antioxidant properties of the protein hydrolysates are preserved during the scale-up of enzymatic hydrolysis. Protein fractions smaller than 5 kDa showed the highest ABTS and DPPH radical scavenging activities, while fractions greater than 30 kDa showed the best results for the FRAP method.

The production of silage using fish viscera can be carried out with straightforward methods and permits the exploitation of nutrients that are usually discarded. This process fosters the concept of circular aquaculture. The aim of this study was to evaluate the inclusion of increasing levels of fish viscera silage (VS) on the physical quality of the feed pellets and their effects on their growth performance, health parameters and on economic indices when the experimental extruded feed was offered to tambaqui. A fermented fish VS produced in-house was included in increasing levels on a wet-basis in the formulation of five experimental diets (VS 0%, VS 5%; VS 10%; VS 15% and VS 20%). Juvenile tambaqui (~22.6 g) were stocked in fibreglass tanks of 700 L (n = 4; 21 fish per tank) with a recirculation system and the five experimental diets were attributed in a completely randomized design. The fish were fed with the experimental diets (to apparent satiation) for 13 weeks. At the end of the trial, no significant differences were observed for production performance. Fish fed with the highest inclusion level of VS presented the highest concentration of plasma cholesterol, but this was still within acceptable values for this species. The inclusion of fish VS in diets for juvenile tambaqui reduced the activity of the plasma ALT enzyme, confirming normal liver function. Extruded feed containing fish VS had a production cost of US$ 0.95 per kg, which does not significantly impact the economic indices. Up to 20% of fish VS can be included in the extruded feed formulation for juvenile tambaqui without impairing growth performance or affecting health parameters.

AIMS: RET-fused mesenchymal neoplasms mostly affect the soft tissue of paediatric patients. Given their responsiveness to selective RET inhibitors, it remains critical to identify those extraordinary cases occurring in the visceral organs of adults. In this study, we report three RET-rearranged spindle-cell tumours occurring in the visceral organs of adults. METHODS AND RESULTS: Clinicopathological features were assessed and partner agnostic targeted next-generation sequencing on clinically validated platforms were performed. The patients were 18, 53, and 55 years old and included one male and two females. The tumours were located in the kidney (case 1), small intestine (case 2), and ureter (case 3), with maximum diameters of 14, 5, and 1 cm, respectively. Histologically, all tumours displayed a morphological spectrum typical of fibrosarcoma, including moderately to highly cellular, nonpleomorphic, ovoid to spindle-shaped cells arranged in long fascicles or haphazardly within collagenised to myxohyaline stroma. Foci of irregular alveolar oedema-like structures and areas with microcystic and reticular arrangements were identified in the renal tumour. Staghorn-type vessels and foci of band-like stromal hyalinisation were observed in the small intestine tumour. Cases 1 and 2 were high-grade and pursed a highly aggressive clinical course, while case 3 was of intermediate grade with no tumour recurrence or metastasis 14 years after surgery. All three tumours expressed CD34, which was coexpressed with S100 protein in cases 2 and 3. Molecular genetic testing revealed PRKAR1A::RET, KIF5B::RET, and SPECC1L::RET in-frame gene fusions. CONCLUSION: Our study expands the clinicopathological and genetic spectrum of mesenchymal neoplasms associated with RET fusions.

Fish viscera are usually discarded as waste, causing environmental problems, or as low-value by-products. This study describes a self-sufficient and zero waste approach to obtain enzymes and protein hydrolysates from fish by-products. Firstly, recovery steps of viscera enzymatic extract were applied, and the resulting raw extract was stable at a pH range of 8-9 and at temperatures between 40 and 50 °C. The application of the extracted enzymes and alcalase on fish by-products hydrolysis was also determined. The selected conditions for the enzymatic hydrolysis were 10% (E/S) for 6 h using viscera enzymatic extract and 3% (E/S) for 2 h using alcalase. Fish protein hydrolysates (FPH) proved to have a notable antioxidant capacity with similar activity, ~11 mg ascorbic acid/g dry extract (ABTS assay) and ~150 mg Trolox/g dry extract (ORAC assay). FPH were also able to inhibit the angiotensin-converting enzyme, however, alcalase hydrolysates revealed a higher antihypertensive potential, IC50 of 101 µg of protein/mL. In general, FPH obtained by both enzymes systems maintained these bioactivities after the passage throughout a simulated gastrointestinal tract. The hydrolysates also displayed important technological properties, namely oil absorption capacity (~1 g oil/g sample) and emulsifying property (~40%). Therefore, it will be conceivable to use fish by-products based on a circular economy approach to generate added value compounds for animal and human nutrition.

To assess the daily intake of total arsenic (tAs) and arsenic speciation and their potential health risks, different food groups, including vegetables, rice, meat, viscera, freshwater fish, and seafood from Chengdu, China were analyzed. The concentrations of tAs ranged from 41.3 to 1185 µg kg-1 with a median of 238 µg kg-1, and 26.0% of tAs in the food groups was of inorganic toxic form. The median concentration of As(V) in rice (184 ± 21.6 µg kg-1) was approximately 2 to 6 times higher than those in other food groups. The bioaccessible inorganic arsenic (iAs) concentrations of the food items obtained from the local markets of Chengdu ranged from 1.07 to 24.6 µg kg-1 (mean of 6.04 µg kg-1). Rice contributed toward the largest amount of daily iAs intake (66.2%). The mean daily iAs intake from vegetable, meat and viscera contributed 10.7%, 12.5% and 6.04% of total iAs intake, respectively. The actual concentration of arsenic in the food exposed to the human body depends on oral bioaccessible fraction. The oral bioaccessibility estimated daily intake (µg kg-1 bw d-1) of tAs and iAs for the residents of Chengdu was 0.32 and 0.16. Health risk assessments carried out based on bioaccessible iAs concentrations showed that the food items were safe for consumption from the iAs perspective.

Crude polysaccharides, extracted from two seaweed species (Hizikia fusiforme and Sargassum horneri) and Haliotis discus hannai (abalone) viscera, were evaluated for their inhibitory effect against SARS-CoV-2 propagation. Plaque titration revealed that these crude polysaccharides efficiently inhibited SARS-CoV-2 propagation with IC50 values ranging from 0.35 to 4.37 µg/mL. The crude polysaccharide of H. fusiforme showed the strongest antiviral effect, with IC50 of 0.35 µg/mL, followed by S. horneri and abalone viscera with IC50 of 0.56 and 4.37 µg/mL, respectively. In addition, immunofluorescence assay, western blot, and quantitative RT-PCR analysis verified that these polysaccharides could inhibit SARS-CoV-2 replication. In Vero E6 cells, treatment with these crude polysaccharides before or after viral infection strongly inhibited the expression level of SARS-CoV-2 spikes, nucleocapsid proteins, and RNA copies of RNA-dependent RNA-polymerase and nucleocapsid. These results show that these crude marine polysaccharides effectively inhibit SARS-CoV-2 propagation by interference with viral entry.

BACKGROUND: Podocyte depletion precedes progressive glomerular damage in several kidney diseases. However, the current standard of visual detection and quantification of podocyte nuclei from brightfield microscopy images is laborious and imprecise. METHODS: We have developed PodoSighter, an online cloud-based tool, to automatically identify and quantify podocyte nuclei from giga-pixel brightfield whole-slide images (WSIs) using deep learning. Ground-truth to train the tool used immunohistochemically or immunofluorescence-labeled images from a multi-institutional cohort of 122 histologic sections from mouse, rat, and human kidneys. To demonstrate the generalizability of our tool in investigating podocyte loss in clinically relevant samples, we tested it in rodent models of glomerular diseases, including diabetic kidney disease, crescentic GN, and dose-dependent direct podocyte toxicity and depletion, and in human biopsies from steroid-resistant nephrotic syndrome and from human autopsy tissues. RESULTS: The optimal model yielded high sensitivity/specificity of 0.80/0.80, 0.81/0.86, and 0.80/0.91, in mouse, rat, and human images, respectively, from periodic acid-Schiff-stained WSIs. Furthermore, the podocyte nuclear morphometrics extracted using PodoSighter were informative in identifying diseased glomeruli. We have made PodoSighter freely available to the general public as turnkey plugins in a cloud-based web application for end users. CONCLUSIONS: Our study demonstrates an automated computational approach to detect and quantify podocyte nuclei in standard histologically stained WSIs, facilitating podocyte research, and enabling possible future clinical applications.

BACKGROUND: Liposuction is among the most popular esthetic procedures worldwide. With growing demand and popularity, reports of serious complications accumulate. Despite being a rare complication of the procedure, visceral perforation is associated with morbidity and severe debilitation. METHODS: The authors conducted a literature search for reported cases of perforation of abdominal viscera following liposuction procedures in the electronic databases of PubMed, Scopus and Cochrane Library databases. RESULTS: The authors found 22 publications; 19 cases case reports and three studies, reporting a total of 49 cases of visceral perforation following abdominal liposuction procedures. Average age of patients was 50 years (range 24-72). Twenty-seven patients (73%) were female, and 10 were male (27%). Forty (81%) patients underwent isolated liposuction, and nine (19%) had multiple procedures carried out in a single surgery. Twenty patients (42%) had undergone previous abdominal surgery, 13 (27%) suffered abdominal wall weakness or deformities, and 7 (14%) suffered from obesity. 25 (52%) ileal perforations occurred, 6 jejunal (12.5%), 5 colic (10%) and 2 (4%) each of splenic and hepatic. Seven patients (14%) died during their hospitalization, 20 (41%) were discharged with no sequelae complications, and 22 (45%) developed complications after discharge. CONCLUSIONS: Liposuction is a popular esthetic procedure that underwent numerous changes over the past century since its introduction. Despite its widely accepted reputation of a safe procedure with minimal complications, a growing number of reports on visceral perforation following liposuction have emerged. Scrupulous pre-operative evaluation and high index of suspicion are crucial for avoiding complications and unfavorable outcomes. Fish processing generates plenty of waste that is directly discarded in open-air dumps and water sources, or treated in the same way as urban solid waste, causing serious pollution problems. The waste represents a significant source of high-value bioproducts with potential applications in different industrial processes such as the production of feed, fertilizers, biodiesel and biogas, detergent additives and cosmetics. The objective of this study was to characterize and compare specific activities under different pH values and temperature conditions of acid and alkaline proteinases and viscera yield from the following fish species: Argentine hake Merluccius hubbsi, Brazilian flathead Percophis brasiliensis, Brazilian codling Urophycis brasiliensis and Stripped weakfish Cynoscion guatucupa. Individuals were fished off the coast of Mar del Plata (Argentina) by a commercial fleet and the viscera were immediately extracted and kept on ice until use. Stomach proteinases from four species had the highest activity at pH 2, with stability in the range of pH 2-4. The optimum pH was 11.5 from intestinal enzymes of C. guatucupa, M. hubbsi and P. brasiliensis and 9.5 from intestinal enzymes of U. brasiliensis. Alkaline proteinases from all species were highly stable in the range of 7-11.5. The optimum temperature of stomach proteinases from the four species studied were 30 and 50°C, with stability at 10 and 30°C during 150 min. The optimum temperature of intestinal enzymes from the tested species were 50°C with high stability at 10 and 30°C during 150 min. Alkaline proteinase from all species and acid proteinases from C. guatucupa were inactive at 70°C after 150 min, while there was a residual activity lower than 5% at 80°C on pre-incubated stomach enzymes of M.hubbsi, P. brasiliensis and U. brasiliensis after 5, 10 and 20 min, respectively. Digestive proteinases recovered in this study could be appropriate for technological usage, reducing manufacturing costs, obtaining revenue from fishery wastes, and contributing to the reduction of environmental pollution.

Blunt abdominal trauma (BAT) refers to injuries without wounds entering the peritoneal cavity due to road traffic accidents (RTA) and falls, as a result of collision or counter collision. The objective of the present study was to determine the frequency of patients with visceral injuries in blunt abdominal trauma. This study was carried out in the Department of Surgery, including ward-3 of Jinnah Post Graduate Medical Centre, Karachi, from November 2017 till November 2020. The study design was descriptive case series. During the study period, the data of 112 patients was collected, which comprised of 102 males and 10 females. All the patients between 12 to 65 years of age (mean age:31.84±13.14 years) presenting to the emergency with < 24 hours of abdominal trauma, were included in the study. Organs involved during blunt abdominal trauma were observed and frequency was recorded. Liver injuries were found in 48(42.28%) patients, intestinal injuries in 40(35.7%), splenic injuries in 32(28.5%), kidney injuries in 24(21.4%), pancreatic injuries in 8(7.1%) and stomach injuries in 4(3.5%) patients. Grade 4 liver injury was found in 80(71%) patients, Grade 2 and 3 splenic injuries in 56(50%) patients whereas 47(42%) patients had grade 1 kidney injury. Liver was found to be the most frequent organ involved, followed by intestine and spleen.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the spectrum of isolated hollow visceral perforations in patients presenting with abdominal blunt trauma. METHODS: The observational, analytical, cross-sectional study was conducted at the surgical ward of Mayo Hospital, Lahore, Pakistan from July 1, 2020, to June 31, 2021, and comprised patients who presented in the emergency department after blunt trauma to abdomen without any open wound. Findings of hollow visceral injury were confirmed on exploration laparotomy. Data was analysed using SPSS 26. RESULTS: Of the 216 patients, 173(80.9%) were male and 43(19.9%) were female. The overall mean age was 42±9.7 years. Most of the blunt trauma abdomen cases were caused by motor vehicle accidents 59(27.3%). The most common hollow viscus affected was jejunum 42(19.4%), followed by transverse colon 29(13.4%). The most common type of injury observed was single complete disruption of hollow viscus 74(34.2%). CONCLUSIONS: The most common hollow organ affected by blunt trauma to the abdomen was jejunum, followed by transverse colon, and motor vehicle accidents were the major cause of these injuries.

Turbo cornutus, the horned turban sea snail, is found along the intertidal and basaltic shorelines of Jeju Island, Korea. T. cornutus feeds on seaweeds (e.g., Undaria sp., and Ecklonia sp.) composed of diverse antioxidants. This study identified potential antioxidant properties from T. cornutus viscera tissues. Diverse extracts were evaluated for their hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) scavenging activities. T. cornutus viscera protamex-assisted extracts (TVP) were purified by gel filtration chromatography (GFC), and potential antioxidant properties were analyzed for their amino acid sequences and its peroxidase inhibition effects by in silico molecular docking and in vitro analysis. According to the results, T. cornutus viscera tissues are composed of many protein contents with each over 50%. Among the extracts, TVP possessed the highest H2O2 scavenging activity. In addition, TVP-GFC-3 significantly decreased intracellular reactive oxygen species (ROS) levels and increased cell viability in H2O2-treated HepG2 cells without cytotoxicity. TVP-GFC-3 comprises nine low molecular bioactive peptides (ELR, VGPQ, TDY, ALPHA, PAH, VDY, WSDK, VFSP, and FAPQY). Notably, the peptides dock to the active site of the myeloperoxidase (MPO), especially TDY and FAPQY showed the MPO inhibition effects with IC50 values of 646.0 ± 45.0 µM and 57.1 ± 17.7 µM, respectively. Altogether, our findings demonstrated that T. cornutus viscera have potential antioxidant properties that can be used as high value-added ingredients.

Abalone viscera (AV) is one of the byproducts of the seafood processing industry. The low molecular weight (<5 kDa) peptides (LMW-AV) obtained from gastrointestinal digestion of AV could suppress allergenic responses on activated HMC-1 human mast cells in our previous study. Regarding the allergenic response of LMW-AV, in the present study, we further investigated the potential of oral administration of LMW-AV against atopic dermatitis (AD) in a dermatitis-induced model stimulated with Dermatophagoides farinae. The results demonstrated that the LMW-AV reduced a number of clinical symptoms, such as the severity of the dermatitis and serum immunoglobulin E levels. Moreover, LMW-AV could inhibit the expression of chemokines and cytokines. The histological analysis indicated that the LMW-AV has suppressed the eosinophil count and the mast cell infiltration into the upper dermis. The results suggest that LMW-AV can be considered as a promising candidate for AD treatment.

Much attention is being devoted to the potential of marine sulfated polysaccharides as antiviral agents in preventing COVID-19. In this study, sulfated fucoidan and crude polysaccharides, extracted from six seaweed species (Undaria pinnatifida sporophyll, Laminaria japonica, Hizikia fusiforme, Sargassum horneri, Codium fragile, Porphyra tenera) and Haliotis discus hannai (abalone viscera), were screened for their inhibitory activity against SARS-CoV-2 virus entry. Most of them showed significant antiviral activities at an IC50 of 12~289 µg/mL against SARS-CoV-2 pseudovirus in HEK293/ACE2, except for P. tenera (IC50 > 1000 µg/mL). The crude polysaccharide of S. horneri showed the strongest antiviral activity, with an IC50 of 12 µg/mL, to prevent COVID-19 entry, and abalone viscera and H. fusiforme could also inhibit SARS-CoV-2 infection with an IC50 of 33 µg/mL and 47 µg/mL, respectively. The common properties of these crude polysaccharides, which have strong antiviral activity, are high molecular weight (>800 kDa), high total carbohydrate (62.7~99.1%), high fucose content (37.3~66.2%), and highly branched polysaccharides. These results indicated that the crude polysaccharides from seaweeds and abalone viscera can effectively inhibit SARS-CoV-2 entry.

Green extraction was applied to Argentinean shortfin squid (Illex argentinus) viscera, consisting of a wet pressing method including a drying step, mechanic pressing, centrifugation of the resulting slurry, and oil collection. To maximise the oil yield and ω3 fatty acid content and to minimise the oil damage degree, a response surface methodology (RSM) design was developed focused on the drying temperature (45-85 °C) and time (30-90 min). In general, an increase of the drying time and temperature provided an increase in the lipid yield recovery from the viscera. The strongest drying conditions showed a higher recovery than 50% when compared with the traditional chemical method. The docosahexaenoic and eicosapentaenoic acid contents in the extracted oil revealed scarce dependence on drying conditions, showing valuable ranges (149.2-166.5 and 88.7-102.4 g·kg-1 oil, respectively). Furthermore, the values of free fatty acids, peroxides, conjugated dienes, and ω3/ω6 ratio did not show extensive differences by comparing oils obtained from the different drying conditions. Contrary, a polyene index (PI) decrease was detected with increasing drying time and temperature. The RSM analysis indicated that optimised drying time (41.3 min) and temperature (85 °C) conditions would lead to 74.73 g·kg-1 (oil yield), 1.87 (PI), and 6.72 (peroxide value) scores, with a 0.67 desirability value.

Ninety wild Atlantic salmon, Salmo salar L., (1.5-10.3 kg) were caught in the Namsen Fjord near the mouth of River Namsen, mid-Norway, and examined for the presence and distribution of Anisakis simplex (Rudolphi, 1809 det. Krabbe, 1878) larvae by digestion of the viscera and muscles in a pepsin/HCl solution. All salmon were migrating spawners after 1-4 years of feeding in the Atlantic Ocean. All 90 Atlantic salmon had A. simplex larvae in the viscera, and all, except two, had A. simplex larvae in the musculature. The number of A. simplex larvae in each fish varied between 3 and 181, and the total mean number of nematode larvae was 44.5. The intensity of A. simplex larvae was positively correlated with increasing weight and sea age of the host. However, the proportion of larvae in the muscle fillets decreased with increasing host weight and sea age. Atlantic salmon females had more A. simplex larvae than males. In all the fish examined, 70.2% of the A. simplex larvae were found in the viscera and 29.8% in the musculature. The majority (93%) of the larvae in the musculature occurred in the hypaxial sections anterior to the anus. As A. simplex larvae commonly occur in the musculature of wild Atlantic salmon, consumption of unfrozen, raw or semi-raw musculature represents a risk for humans developing anisakiasis.
