ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVETo reveal the relationship between iodine nutrition and the change of spectrum on thyroid diseases through comparing the different iodine environments pre- and post- the universal salt iodization(USI)campaign.

METHODSTo compare the urinary iodine concentration between 1000 normal people and 5998 patients with thyroid disease who had undergone surgical operations, from 4 major cities, including iodine deficient and rich areas of Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region.

RESULTSAfter USI was put into practice, the urinary iodine concentration of patients with thyroid appeared higher than those of normal people(324.3 µg/L vs. 238.5 µg/L, P < 0.05). The urinary iodine concentrations of nodular goiter,Graves disease, toxic nodular goiter, thyroid papillary carcinoma and Hashimoto's thyroiditis were higher than those before the USI was taken(263.8 µg/L vs. 69.75 µg/L, 289.7 µg/L vs. 228.3 µg/L, 346.8 µg/L vs. 268.4 µg/L, 350.3 µg/L vs. 316.2 µg/L and 378.5 µg/L vs. 305.8 µg/L). The proportions of toxic nodular goiter, thyroid papillary carcinoma and Hashimoto's thyroiditis appeared as 7.59% vs. 4.80%, 5.85% vs. 4.02% and 3.88% vs. 2.46%, all higher than those before the implementation of USI, except the nodular goiter which showed a reduction (63.56% vs. 69.75%).

CONCLUSIONThe spectrum of thyroid diseases appeared an obvious change in Guangxi within the last 10-year implementation of USI. However, the excessive intake of iodine might serve as a risk factor for toxic nodular goiter, thyroid papillary carcinoma and Hashimoto's thyroiditis.

ABSTRACT

Objective To examine the benefits of ECMO for potential organ donors with hemodynamic instability after brain death. Methods Three brain-dead potential donors who presented with hemodynamic instability despite maximal medical management, finished a declaration of brain death, that were supported by extracorporeal circulation membrane oxygenation (ECMO).Results Donor organs, including six kidneys, and two livers, were harvested from the three donors under ECMO support, leading to 8 successful transplantations. The organs functioned well and the recipients made full recoveries. Conclusion Our experience indicates that ECMO allows for the maintenance of abdominal organ tissue perfusion without warm ischemia before organ procurement, providing sufficient time for safe organ donation procedures and reducing the risk of unpredictable cardiac arrest that could result in the donor death and graft loss.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE@#To explore the expression of MEF2D in NPC tissues, study the relationship between the expression and prognostic.@*METHOD@#Specimens from 101 NPC patients who were follow-up visited 1 to 7 years were analyzed for MEF2D by using immunohistochemistry.@*RESULT@#(1) The expression of MEF2D was higher in the higher clinical stage. (2) Density and Grey of MEF2D was negative correlated (|r| = 0.865, P < 0.01). (3) NPC patients' survival rate after therapies was 52.5%, the survival curve of 1th clinical stage was higher than 4th. (4) The survival curves of MEF2D stages were no statistical significance.@*CONCLUSION@#There's statistical significance of the MEF2D expression in clinical stages, but not in survival curve, which indicated that MEF2D concerned with invasion and metastatic of NPC.

ABSTRACT

Objective To observe the changes of islet cell apoptosis and oxidation-antioxidation before the transplantation, and to explore the pathways of islet protection. Methods Fifteen human pancreases were perfused with the Hanks solution containing collagenase, then digested and isolated. During the procedure, islet cell apoptosis was detected by TUNEL, SOD and MDA in the pancreas were measured by colorimetric method, and the morphologic changes were observed by H-E staining and dithizone staining. Results In the procedure of human islet isolation, especially in the stage of digestion, the apoptosis of human islet cells occurred. In the stages of perfusion and digestion, the MDA contents reached the high levels (6. 18 ± 2. 38 and 9. 21 ± 2. 75 umol/mg protein respectively),and the structures of the islets and tissues around the islets were damaged. Conclusion In the stages of perfusion and digestion, apoptosis of islet cells can be caused by oxidation. It suggests that antioxidation is a pathway for protection of islets before transplantation.
