ABSTRACT

Breast cancer is the second most common type of cancer in the world. After the diagnosis, there are countless changes and feelings that come to light in a woman's life, from discovery to recovery. Therefore, the objective was to analyze the knowledge and feelings of mastectomized women about breast cancer. This is a descriptive study with a qualitative approach, carried out at Grupo Amigos do Peito, located in the city of Cajazeiras, state of Paraíba, Brazil. The study participants were ten women who make up the group. For data collection, semi-structured interviews were used, which were later analyzed through the Collective Subject Discourse. The analysis of the speeches allowed the understanding of three categories that guided the knowledge and feelings experienced by mastectomized women in the face of cancer, namely: Weaknesses in the definition of breast cancer; Feelings caused by the discovery of the disease; and Negative feelings resulting from the mastectomy. The woman diagnosed with the neoplasm does not have knowledge on the subject, however, she exposes negative characteristics to the disease. In addition, the impact caused by the diagnosis of the disease and the surgical treatment is immense, given that the disease brings with it a series of transformations in the woman's life, body and mind. Thus, the women interviewed were not able to define breast cancer precisely and had negative feelings related to cancer and the performance of mastectomy. However, the results of the educational actions proved to be satisfactory, and made it possible for the woman to feel more secure and welcomed.

ABSTRACT

ABSTRACT

The COVID-19 pandemic has changed the world's scenarios as well as the routines and ways of living. Health professionals are part of the population acting in the front line, and in turn, they have become a risk group, which causes feelings such as stress and anxiety, with some may even showing signs of depression. Therefore, the purpose of this work is to characterize the presence of signs of anxiety, stress and depression and relate them to social skills in 70 health professionals in a city in Paraná. For the evaluation of such variables, the HAD Instrument Scale was used to evaluate signs/symptoms of anxiety and depression, with the Perceived Stress Scale (PSS-10) also being used to evaluate the stress variable, in addition to an adapted open questionnaire (CABALLO, 2003) for social skills. From the results obtained, it could be observed that the majority of the participants presents signs of depression (79.7%), as well as signs of anxiety (78.6%). Furthermore, they also present high levels of stress when compared to the Brazilian normative sample. Thus, it can be understood that health professionals are predisposed to presenting high results, since they are exposed to a stressful and high-risk context and are also in need of caring strategies. Furthermore, it is important to further expand studies in the area, given that the context of the COVID-19 pandemic is something new and therefore, requires new forms of confrontation.

ABSTRACT

Abstract Palliative care aims to provide quality of life for patients and family, seeking to alleviate problems and symptoms, focusing on relieving suffering. The nursing team extensively participates in this care, which can emotionally overload the professional. Hence, this descriptive, qualitative, and exploratory study sought to clarify the feelings of nursing professionals working in palliative care. Data was collected by a semi-structured script applied to ten nursing professionals from the palliative care sector of a hospital. Emotional overload and difficulties in addressing certain feelings were observed in the interviewees. Results show a lack of strategies to mitigate these overloads in the work environment and the lack of palliative care in the health curricula. Some of the feelings described were difficult to manage, especially by less experienced professionals.

ABSTRACT

Abstract The aim of this article is to present how hospitalized children understand the concept of death and raise discussions on the theme of death in childhood. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with children aged 7 to 12 years, using story telling as a playful resource for data collection. The main results showed that children structure the concept of death in a multidimensional way, encompassing biological, spiritual, sociocultural and emotional factors. Inserted in the context of hospitalization, they approach the theme of death, sensitizing themselves. Thus, children demonstrate the need to be listened to and have their feelings welcomed when they face the loss of a loved one or even the possibility of the end of their own lives.

ABSTRACT

This integrative literature review aims to map Brazilian articles from the maternal sensitivity perspective, based on a search in the CAPES Portal databases, more specifically in BVS Brasil and SciELO, carried out in 2019, and updated in the first half of 2020, using the descriptors "maternal sensitivity", "maternal sensitivity and brazil" and "maternal sensitivity and vulnerability". The inclusion criteria were empirical articles carried out in Brazil, published in the last 10 years (2010-2020) in Portuguese, with unrestricted access in full text. 685 references were found and only 14 studies were analyzed in full because they met the criteria established in this research. It is noticed that some factors have a negative impact on maternal sensitivity, such as living in a situation of socioeconomic vulnerability; the mother's mental health and the fragility of her support network. There is a shortage of Brazilian productions on this theme and of interventional research with the mother-baby dyad, demonstrating the relevance of this article.

ABSTRACT

Although much is known about measurable data on Oral Health in Primary Health Care (PHC), little is known about the individual and subjective aspects of the dental professional. In the performance of their functions, dentists keep in touch with some environmental and technological aspects, and with people in their total complexity. In response, these conditions trigger a series of emotions in the [dentist's] body, which are consciously expressed through their feelings. Given this scenario, the present studyarose from the assumption that dentists have a great deal to say about the everyday representations they have about their job. The objective of this study was to identify the feelings expressed by dentists in their practice in PHC, based on the data that has been produced in the. The scope of the review was chosen due to the limited number of researches in this field. The present study was conducted taking into consideration the twenty essential items and the two optional items of the Prisma Extension for scope reviews presented by Tricco et al. in 2018. The search was conducted in the period from August to October 2020, by using the construction of the mnemonic research question that represented Population, Concept and Context, which was defined as follows: P = Dentists, C = feeling and C = primary care. Based on this study, we were able to perceive the extent to which dental practice was subject to emotions and feelings that were frequently antagonistic and, therefore, it was necessary to examine them in greater depth (AU).

ABSTRACT

Objective: To explore the effect of emotional optimization of workplace employees in immersive virtual natural environment. Methods: In July 2020, 15 subjects were selected to complete two groups of treadmill walking training experiments in virtual natural environment and daily environment respectively. At the same time, the subjects' skin electrical (EDA) , pulse frequency (Pf) , respiratory frequency (Rf) physiological data and Self-Assessment Manikin (SAM) data before and after walking were collected; the mean value of three dimensions of SAM and the emotion difference before and after the experiment were calculated. The differences of physiological indexes and subjective mood changes of subjects were tested by paired sample t-test. Results: Compared with the daily environment, the ΔEDA, ΔPf and ΔRf of the subjects in the virtual natural environment were all decreased , and the differences were statistically significant (P<0.05). There were statistically significant differences in pleasure and arousal between subjects before and after using the virtual natural environment (P <0.05). Compared with the daily environment, the Δpleasure degree of subjects using the virtual natural environment increased, and the Δarousal degree and Δdominance degree decreased, and the differences were statistically significant (P <0.05). Conclusion: Walking in virtual natural environment can help subjects improve their mood, relax and improve the regulation ability of autonomic nervous system.

ABSTRACT

In reference with the systematic review of the thought of deqi (arrival of qi) put forward in Huangdi Neijing (Internal Classic of Yellow Emperor) and other classic books of traditional Chinese medicine, in view of detecting qi and identifying qi before treatment, as well as the prerequisites of deqi in tuina, meaning the accurate syndrome differentiation and manipulations, the importance of deqi in treatment with tuina is expounded. In association with clinical experience, the specific manifestations of deqi in patients during tuina are summarized, e.g. soreness, distention, pain, numbness, warm feeling and slight sweating, local changes in intestinal sound and skin color, as well as mind regulation. It is anticipated that deqi of tuina may be drawn the attention in clinical practice, and the relevant study be expanded.

ABSTRACT

The research shows that personality assessment can be achieved by regression model based on electroencephalogram (EEG). Most of existing researches use event-related potential or power spectral density for personality assessment, which can only represent the brain information of a single region. But some research shows that human cognition is more dependent on the interaction of brain regions. In addition, due to the distribution difference of EEG features among subjects, the trained regression model can not get accurate results of cross subject personality assessment. In order to solve the problem, this research proposes a personality assessment method based on EEG functional connectivity and domain adaption. This research collected EEG data from 45 normal people under different emotional pictures (positive, negative and neutral). Firstly, the coherence of 59 channels in 5 frequency bands was taken as the original feature set. Then the feature-based domain adaptation was used to map the feature to a new feature space. It can reduce the distribution difference between training and test set in the new feature space, so as to reduce the distribution difference between subjects. Finally, the support vector regression model was trained and tested based on the transformed feature set by leave-one-out cross-validation. What's more, this paper compared the methods used in previous researches. The results showed that the method proposed in this paper improved the performance of regression model and obtained better personality assessment results. This research provides a new method for personality assessment.

ABSTRACT

There are two modes to display panoramic movies in virtual reality (VR) environment: non-stereoscopic mode (2D) and stereoscopic mode (3D). It has not been fully studied whether there are differences in the activation effect between these two continuous display modes on emotional arousal and what characteristics of the related neural activity are. In this paper, we designed a cognitive psychology experiment in order to compare the effects of VR-2D and VR-3D on emotional arousal by analyzing synchronously collected scalp electroencephalogram signals. We used support vector machine (SVM) to verify the neurophysiological differences between the two modes in VR environment. The results showed that compared with VR-2D films, VR-3D films evoked significantly higher electroencephalogram (EEG) power (mainly reflected in α and β activities). The significantly improved β wave power in VR-3D mode showed that 3D vision brought more intense cortical activity, which might lead to higher arousal. At the same time, the more intense α activity in the occipital region of the brain also suggested that VR-3D films might cause higher visual fatigue. By the means of neurocinematics, this paper demonstrates that EEG activity can well reflect the effects of different vision modes on the characteristics of the viewers' neural activities. The current study provides theoretical support not only for the future exploration of the image language under the VR perspective, but for future VR film shooting methods and human emotion research.

ABSTRACT

INTRODUCTION@#Unmet psychosocial concerns are associated with emotional distress among cancer patients. This longitudinal study aimed to identify specific psychosocial concern profiles and trajectories of emotional distress, and examine their association among newly diagnosed adult cancer patients across the first year of diagnosis.@*METHODS@#Adult patients aged 21-64 years were screened to determine their eligibility for this study. Psychosocial concerns and psychological distress were measured using the Problem List and the Distress Thermometer, respectively (n = 221). Latent transition mixture analysis was used to determine specific psychosocial concern profiles and trajectories of emotional distress, and examine associations with adjustments made for demographic and medical variables.@*RESULTS@#Two classes of psychosocial concerns were identified: low (81%) and high (19%) concerns. Two trajectories of distress were identified: low stable (69%) and high stable (31%) trajectories. Patients in the high concerns class were significantly more likely to demonstrate the high stable trajectory of distress.@*CONCLUSION@#Our findings highlight the importance of concurrent assessment of multiple psychosocial concerns and screening of emotional distress throughout a cancer patient's treatment journey. Such assessments can effectively guide interventions to address individual concerns and alleviate emotional distress among newly diagnosed cancer patients.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE@#We employed a multidisciplinary approach incorporating theoretical ideas, clinical experience, psychology, physiology, traditional Chinese medicine (CM), modern practice of CM, and oncology to explore the effect of patients' repression of negative emotions and traumatic events on breast cancer (BC) pathogenesis.@*METHODS@#BC female patients, older than 18 years of age, with available pathology reports who were treated at Rabin Medical Center were recruited. All participants completed questionnaires regarding medical history, behavioral tendencies, negative emotions, trauma, symptoms, and pathology (from a CM perspective). Data on tumor characteristics were collected from the pathology reports. The associations were examined using hierarchical binary logistic regressions.@*RESULTS@#A total of 155 BC patients were enrolled. The median age was 52 years, with a range of 26-79; 95% were mothers; 28% had estrogen receptor (ER)-negative BC, 52% had progesterone receptor (PR)-negative BC, 48% had human epidermal growth factor receptor 2-negative BC, and antigen Ki-67 ≥ 20% was reported for 52% of tumors. Statistically significant associations were found between the emotional markers (sense of motherhood failure, and lack of self-fulfillment), avoidance behavior, and physical symptoms that are related to emotional repression based on CM. Significant associations were also found between variables associated with physical symptoms of emotional repression, which involves the production and accumulation of non-substantial phlegm (i.e., "high-lipid Qi-like microscopic phlegm"), avoidance behavior which unconsciously uses "high-lipid Qi-like microscopic phlegm" in order to achieve emotional repression, and tumor parameters including tumor grade, PR status, and Ki-67. Patients with higher levels of "high-lipid Qi-like microscopic phlegm" were more likely to have tumors with worse prognosis (PR-negative, higher grade, and higher Ki-67).@*CONCLUSION@#We demonstrated a relationship between emotional parameters, behavioral tendencies, CM parameters, and oncologic parameters in BC. Additional research is warranted to explore these associations and their relevance to clinical practice.

ABSTRACT

Abstract Healthcare process that take place in hospitals are shaped around different relational dimensions between the actors involved. Western societies have naturalized these institutions as spaces of presumed vertical structure, ruled by biomedical rationality. This literature review shows that care practices entail different relations, knowledge and emotions, which configure aspects found outside the institution's standards. It investigates the healthcare processes developed in Latin America hospitals, focusing on the tensions between the rationality imposed by the norm and the emotions that emerge in the work process. For this purpose, a metaethnography was carried out to summarize qualitative research and produce new interpretations on the topic. A total 36 scientific papers was obtained by searching the BVS, PubMed, SciELO and Scopus databases. Results show that rationalities and emotions function as structural dimensions of healthcare processes in hospitals.
