ABSTRACT

The non-exponential character of the structural relaxation is considered one of the hallmarks of the glassy dynamics, and in this context, the relatively narrow shape observed by dielectric techniques for polar glass formers has attracted the attention of the community for long time. This work addresses the phenomenology and role of specific non-covalent interactions in the structural relaxation of glass-forming liquids by the study of polar tributyl phosphate. We show that dipole interactions can couple to shear stress and modify the flow behavior, preventing the occurrence of the simple liquid behavior. We discuss our findings in the general framework of glassy dynamics and the role of intermolecular interactions.

ABSTRACT

Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is associated with poor self-control, underpinned by inferior fronto-striatal deficits. We showed previously that 18 ADHD adolescents over 11 runs of 8.5 min of real-time functional magnetic resonance neurofeedback of the right inferior frontal cortex (rIFC) progressively increased activation in 2 regions of the rIFC which was associated with clinical symptom improvement. In this study, we used functional connectivity analyses to investigate whether fMRI-Neurofeedback of rIFC resulted in dynamic functional connectivity changes in underlying neural networks. Whole-brain seed-based functional connectivity analyses were conducted using the two clusters showing progressively increased activation in rIFC as seed regions to test for changes in functional connectivity before and after 11 fMRI-Neurofeedback runs. Furthermore, we tested whether the resulting functional connectivity changes were associated with clinical symptom improvements and whether they were specific to fMRI-Neurofeedback of rIFC when compared to a control group who had to self-regulate another region. rIFC showed increased positive functional connectivity after relative to before fMRI-Neurofeedback with dorsal caudate and anterior cingulate and increased negative functional connectivity with regions of the default mode network (DMN) such as posterior cingulate and precuneus. Furthermore, the functional connectivity changes were correlated with clinical improvements and the functional connectivity and correlation findings were specific to the rIFC-Neurofeedback group. The findings show for the first time that fMRI-Neurofeedback of a typically dysfunctional frontal region in ADHD adolescents leads to strengthening within fronto-cingulo-striatal networks and to weakening of functional connectivity with posterior DMN regions and that this may be underlying clinical improvement.

ABSTRACT

The impact of supramolecular aggregate formation on the shear viscosity response of hydrogen bonded liquids was investigated. In particular, we study the shear mechanical response of several monoalcohols showing exponential and non-exponential shape dielectric Debye-like relaxation. In addition to the structural relaxation, distinctive of the glass transition, and the terminal crossover to pure viscous flow, characteristic of simple liquid flow, systematic analysis of complex viscosity curves evidences the presence of an additional intermediate process between those two. While the recovery of pure viscous flow would reflect the complete relaxation of the hydrogen bonded aggregates the intermediate process correlates with the rotational dynamics of hydroxyl groups, potentially caused by the breaking of individual hydrogen bonds.

ABSTRACT

Herein, a combined study of the molecular rotation dynamics and free volume in cis-1,4-poly(isoprene) using two external probing techniques via ESR and PALS together with relaxation dynamics of the host medium via BDS is presented. The spectral evolution of the spin probe TEMPO from simulations over a wide range from 100 K up to 300 K exhibits three different regions of its correlation time consisting of a slow regime at low temperatures followed by the molecular dynamic heterogeneity zone from T = T = 155 K = 0.82 × T up to Tc ≅ 236 K = 1.26 × T and ending with a fast regime at high temperatures with the further characteristic ESR temperatures, T = 186 K ≅ T and T = 260 K. These are in close coincidence with four characteristic PALS temperatures: T = 160 K, T = 190 K, T = 227 K, and T = 263 K. Finally, using BDS, we revealed that the high-frequency features of the structural relaxation of 1,4-PIP 0.8k were related to the observed effects in the ESR and PALS response of the liquid state.

ABSTRACT

We have investigated the Debye-like relaxation in a series of monoalcohols (MAs) by broadband dielectric spectroscopy and thermally stimulated depolarization current techniques in order to get further insight on the time dispersion of this intriguing relaxation. Results indicate that the Debye-like relaxation of MAs is not always of exponential type and conforms well to a dispersion of Cole-Davidson type. Apart from the already reported non-exponentiality of the Debye-like relaxation in 2-hexyl-1-decanol and 2-butyl-1-octanol, a detailed analysis of the dielectric permittivity of 5-methyl-3-heptanol shows that this MA also presents some extent of dispersion on its Debye-like relaxation which strongly depends on the temperature. Results suggest that the non-exponential character of the Debye-like relaxation might be a general characteristic in the case of not so intense Debye-like relaxations relative to the α relaxation. Finally, we briefly discuss on the T-dependence and possible origin for the observed dispersion.

ABSTRACT

The determination of the net charge and size of microgel particles as a function of their concentration, as well as the degree of association of ions to the microgel backbone, has been pursued in earlier studies mainly by scattering and rheology. These methods suffer from contributions due to inter-particle interactions that interfere with the characterization of single-particle properties. Here we introduce dielectric spectroscopy as an alternative experimental method to characterize microgel systems. The advantage of dielectric spectroscopy over other experimental methods is that the polarization due to mobile charges within a microgel particle is only weakly affected by inter-particle interactions. Apart from electrode polarization effects, experimental spectra on PNIPAM-co-AA [poly(N-isopropylacrylamide-co-acrylic acid)] ionic microgel particles suspended in de-ionized water exhibit three well-separated relaxation modes, which are due to the polarization of the mobile charges within the microgel particles, the diffuse double layer around the particles, and the polymer backbone. Expressions for the full frequency dependence of the electrode-polarization contribution to the measured dielectric response are derived, and a theory is proposed for the polarization resulting from the mobile charges within the microgel. Relaxation of the diffuse double layer is modeled within the realm of a cell model. The net charge and the size of the microgel particles are found to be strongly varying with concentration. A very small value of the diffusion coefficient of ions within the microgel is found, due to a large degree of chemical association of protons to the polymer backbone.

ABSTRACT

We have combined X-ray diffraction, neutron diffraction with polarization analysis, small angle neutron scattering, differential scanning calorimetry, and broad band dielectric spectroscopy to investigate the structure and dynamics of binary mixtures of poly(2-(dimethylamino)ethyl methacrylate) with either water or tetrahydrofuran (THF) at different concentrations. Aqueous mixtures are characterized by a highly heterogeneous structure where water clusters coexist with an underlying nano-segregation of main chains and side groups of the polymeric matrix. THF molecules are homogeneously distributed among the polymeric nano-domains for concentrations of one THF molecule/monomer or lower. A more heterogeneous situation is found for higher THF amounts, but without evidences for solvent clusters. In THF-mixtures, we observe a remarkable reduction of the glass-transition temperature which is enhanced with increasing amount of solvent but seems to reach saturation at high THF concentrations. Adding THF markedly reduces the activation energy of the polymer ß-relaxation. The presence of THF molecules seemingly hinders a slow component of this process which is active in the dry state. The aqueous mixtures present a strikingly broad glass-transition feature, revealing a highly heterogeneous behavior in agreement with the structural study. Regarding the solvent dynamics, deep in the glassy state all data can be described by an Arrhenius temperature dependence with a rather similar activation energy. However, the values of the characteristic times are about three orders of magnitude smaller for THF than for water. Water dynamics display a crossover toward increasingly higher apparent activation energies in the region of the onset of the glass transition, supporting its interpretation as a consequence of the freezing of the structuralrelaxation of the surrounding matrix. The absence of such a crossover (at least in the wide dynamic window here accessed) in THF is attributed to the lack of cooperativity effects in the relaxation of these molecules within the polymeric matrix.

ABSTRACT

Cystic echinococcosis (CE) remains an important health problem in many areas of the world, including the Mediterranean region. We performed a retrospective study of cases reported from 1998 to 2012 in order to review and update the epidemiology of this disease in a highly endemic area situated in western Spain. A total of 471 patients were diagnosed with hydatid disease. Of these cases, 55·8% were male, with an average age of 62·3 ± 19·5 years. More importantly, 1·5% of patients were children, and 20·5% were aged <45 years. An active therapeutic approach was implemented for 92·6% of the CE patients with primary diagnoses; however, a 'watch and wait' strategy was used in 59·3% of all secondary CE diagnoses. The incidence rate of hydatid disease was significantly higher compared to the incidence described in the Notifiable Disease System in this area. Furthermore, a significant decrease in hydatid incidence during the years included in the study was observed (ß = -0·4357, P < 0·001). CE incidence has diminished in recent years, although active transmission remains in paediatric cases. Additionally, CE incidence remains high in our region despite public health plans for its control. The documented incidence of CE disease clearly underestimates the real numbers.

ABSTRACT

We explore new routes for characterizing the Debye-like and α relaxation in 2-ethyl-1-hexanol (2E1H) monoalcohol by using low frequency dielectric techniques including thermally stimulated depolarization current (TSDC) techniques and isothermal depolarization current methods. In this way, we have improved the resolution of the overlapped processes making it possible the analysis of the data in terms of a mode composition as expected for a chain-like response. Furthermore the explored ultralow frequencies enabled to study dynamics at relatively low temperatures close to the glass transition (Tg). Results show, on the one hand, that Debye-like and α relaxation timescales dramatically approach to each other upon decreasing temperature to Tg. On the other hand, the analysis of partial polarization TSDC data confirms the single exponential character of the Debye-like relaxation in 2E1H and rules out the presence of Rouse type modes in the scenario of a chain-like response. Finally, on crossing the glass transition, the Debye-like relaxation shows non-equilibrium effects which are further emphasized by aging treatment and would presumably emerge as a result of the arrest of the structural relaxation below Tg.

ABSTRACT

We have investigated a mixture of poly(2-(dimethylamino)ethyl methacrylate) (PDMAEMA) and tetrahydrofuran (THF) (70 wt. % PDMAEMA/30 wt. % THF) by combining dielectric spectroscopy and quasielastic neutron scattering (QENS) on a labelled sample, focusing on the dynamics of the THF molecules. Two independent processes have been identified. The "fast" one has been qualified as due to an internal motion of the THF ring leading to hydrogen displacements of about 3 Å with rather broadly distributed activation energies. The "slow" process is characterized by an Arrhenius-like temperature dependence of the characteristic time which persists over more than 9 orders of magnitude in time. The QENS results evidence the confined nature of this process, determining a size of about 8 Å for the volume within which THF hydrogens' motions are restricted. In a complementary way, we have also investigated the structural features of the sample. This study suggests that THF molecules are well dispersed among side-groups nano-domains in the polymer matrix, ruling out a significant presence of clusters of solvent. Such a good dispersion, together with a rich mobility of the local environment, would prevent cooperativity effects to develop for the structural relaxation of solvent molecules, frustrating thereby the emergence of Vogel-Fulcher-like behavior, at least in the whole temperature interval investigated.

ABSTRACT

The slowest (p=1) mode relaxation of several polyisoprenes has been experimentally isolated by thermally stimulated depolarization current techniques. Close to the glass transition the p=1 mode deviates from the exponential behavior assumed by Rouse and tube-reptation theories. This effect is found to be a consequence of the closeness of τ_{p=1} and α-relaxation time scales. The scenario resembles that of broadened fast component dynamics in polymer blends with high dynamic asymmetry and suggests a possible general interpretation in terms of the effect of local density fluctuations (α relaxation) on chain dynamics.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND AND AIM: Post-menopausal women are at higher risk of cardiovascular disease and bone demineralization. Phytosterols (PS) may be used for hypercholesterolemia in some groups and ß-cryptoxanthin (ß-Cx) displays a unique anabolic effect on bone. Our aim was to assess the changes in cardiovascular and bone turnover markers from the oral intake of ß-Cx and PS in post-menopausal women. METHODS AND RESULTS: A randomized, double-blind, crossover study with ß-Cx (0.75 mg/day) and PS (1.5 g/day), single and combined, was performed in 38 postmenopausal women. Diet was supplemented with 1 × 250 mL milk-based fruit drink/day for 4 weeks with a wash-out period of 4-weeks in between. Serum ß-Cx and PS were determined by UPLC and CG-FID respectively. Outcome variables included markers of bone turnover and cardiovascular risk. Biological effect was assessed by paired t test and generalized estimating equations analysis that included the previous treatment, the order of intervention and the interactions. The intake of beverages containing ß-Cx and PS brought about a significant increase in serum levels of ß-Cx, ß-sitosterol and campesterol. Intervention caused changes in almost all the markers while the order, previous treatment and the interaction did not reach statistical significance. Only the intake of the beverage containing ß-Cx plus PS brought about significant decreases in total cholesterol, c-HDL, c-LDL and bone turnover markers. CONCLUSIONS: ß-Cx improves the cholesterol-lowering effect of PS when supplied simultaneously and this combination may also be beneficial in reducing risk of osteoporosis. ABSTRACT

INTRODUCTION: In July 2020, a draft bill was introduced in Spain's Congress which proposed that continuing medical education be funded exclusively by the Spanish government, barring involvement from private entities. AIMS: This work aims to gather physicians' and pharmacists' opinions on this draft bill, learn what they think about the funding of continuing medical education and possible conflicts of interest. METHODS: This work is a descriptive cross-sectional study conducted via voluntary anonymous surveys aimed at physicians and hospital pharmacists. RESULTS: Four hundred thirty-five surveys were analyzed, 59.8% of which were from women. Of the respondents, 87.6% were specialist physicians and 77.2% were part of a specialist department. A total of 55.2% did not agree with the draft bill while 92.4% agreed that the government and private institutes should subsidize training for their workers. Furthermore, 52.4% disagreed that each professional should pay for his or her own training while 14% agreed they should. A total of 19.8% have felt uncomfortable when a course or conference has been paid for by another entity and 74.5% believe that the involvement of private entities in funding does not influence prescribing. CONCLUSIONS: The majority of those surveyed did not agree with a draft bill aimed at prohibiting the pharmaceutical industry from funding continuing medical education. Nearly all agreed that the government and private institutions should fund training for their workers. In general, those surveyed did not find conflicts of interest in their relationship with the industry.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the presence of wiper epitheliopathy in patients with blepharospasm and/or hemifacial spasm before and 4 weeks after routine treatment with botulinum toxin. METHODS: Prospective study comprising 31 eyes of 20 patients with neurological diagnosis of hemifacial spasm (9 eyes of 9 patients) and essential blepharospasm (22 eyes of 11 patients). Various ocular surface parameters were assessed before and 4 weeks after infiltration with botulinum toxin using the OSDI questionnaire, Schirmer's test, tear break-up time (BUT), fluorescein and lissamine green staining assessed with the Oxford test and the degree of involvement of the palpebral wiper. RESULTS: 100% of the patients had palpebral wiper involvement before (30% mild and 70% moderate) and after toxin treatment (100% mild). 75% of patients had mild-normal OSDI before treatment, after treatment it was 80%. The BUT was 7.2 ±â€¯0.2 sg before and 7.5 ±â€¯0.7 sg after treatment. Schirmer's test was 11.4 ±â€¯5.5 and 12.5 ±â€¯5.5 mm before and after treatment. The Oxford test was initially pathological in 69.3% of patients, after 4 weeks it was pathological in only 54%. CONCLUSION: Wiper epitheliopathy is present in 100% of patients with blepharospasm and/or hemifacial spasm. The main pathophysiological mechanism that triggers it in these patients is the increase in the coefficient of friction, as tear volume and stability are normal.

ABSTRACT

We present a numerical and analytical study of the behavior of both electrostatic force and force gradient created by a charge trapped below the surface of a dielectric on an atomic force microscope tip as a function of the dielectric constant and tip-sample distance. As expected, the force decreases monotonously when the dielectric constant increases. However, a maximum in the dielectric constant dependence of the force gradient is found. This maximum occurs in the typical experimental parameters' range and depends on the tip-sample distance and the sample thickness. The analytical study permits us to understand the physical origin of this phenomenon and is in good agreement with the numerical simulation for small tip-sample distances. We also report a study exemplifying a possible contrast inversion in electrostatic force microscopy (EFM) signals while scanning, at different heights, two charges trapped in a sample having heterogeneous dielectric domains. In addition to this particular contrast inversion effect, this study can be considered as a way to gain insight into the mechanisms of EFM image formation as a function of the dielectric constant and tip-sample.

ABSTRACT

We present a study of the lateral resolution in electrostatic force microscopy for dielectric samples in both force and gradient modes. Whereas previous studies have reported expressions for metallic surfaces having potential heterogeneities (Kelvin probe force microscopy), in this work we take into account the presence of a dielectric medium. We introduce a definition of the lateral resolution based on the force due to a test particle being either a point charge or a polarizable particle on the dielectric surface. The behaviour has been studied over a wide range of typical experimental parameters: tip-sample distance (1-20) nm, sample thickness (0-5) µm and dielectric constant (1-20), using the numerical simulation of the equivalent charge method. For potential heterogeneities on metallic surfaces expressions are in agreement with the bibliography. The lateral resolution of samples having a dielectric constant of more than 10 tends to metallic behaviour. We found a characteristic thickness of 100 nm, above which the lateral resolution measured on the dielectric surface is close to that of an infinite medium. As previously reported, the lateral resolution is better in the gradient mode than in the force mode. Finally, we showed that for the same experimental conditions, the lateral resolution is better for a polarizable particle than for a charge, i.e. dielectric heterogeneities should always look 'sharper' (better resolved) than inhomogeneous charge distributions. This fact should be taken into account when interpreting images of heterogeneous samples.

ABSTRACT

The spontaneous thermodynamically driven densification, the so-called physical aging, of glassy poly(mehtyl methacrylate) (PMMA) and its nanocomposites with silica has been described by means of the free volume holes diffusion model. This mechanism is able to account for the partial decoupling between physical aging and segmental dynamics of PMMA in nancomposites. The former has been found to be accelerated in PMMA/silica nanocomposites in comparison to "bulk" PMMA, whereas no difference between the segmental dynamics of bulk PMMA and that of the same polymer in nanocomposites has been observed. Thus, the rate of physical aging also depends on the amount of interface polymer/nanoparticles, where free volume holes disappear after diffusing through the polymer matrix. The free volume holes diffusion model is able to nicely capture the phenomenology of the physical aging process with a structure dependent diffusion coefficient.

ABSTRACT

We report a joint analysis of positron annihilation lifetime spectroscopy (PALS), dielectric spectroscopy (BDS), and nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) on cis-trans-1,4-poly(butadiene) (c-t-1,4-PBD). Phenomenological analysis of the orthopositronium lifetime τ(3)-T dependence by linear fitting reveals four characteristic PALS temperatures: T(b1)(G)=0.63T(g)(PALS), T(g)(PALS), T(b1)(L)=1.22T(g)(PALS), and T(b2)(L)=1.52T(g)(PALS). Slight bend effects in the glassy and supercooled liquid states are related to the fast or slow secondary ß process, from neutron scattering, respectively, the latter being connected with the trans-isomers. In addition, the first bend effect in the supercooled liquid coincides with a deviation of the slow effective secondary ß(eff) relaxation related to the cis-isomers from low-T Arrhenius behavior to non-Arrhenius one and correlates with the onset of the primary α process from BDS. The second plateau effect in the liquid state occurs when τ(3) becomes commensurable with the structural relaxation time τ(α)(T(b2)). It is also approximately related to its crossover from non-Arrhenius to Arrhenius regime in the combined BDS and NMR data. Finally, the combined BDS and NMR structural relaxation data, when analyzed in terms of the two-order parameter (TOP) model, suggest the influence of solidlike domains on both the annihilation behavior and the local and segmental chain mobility in the supercooled liquid. All these findings indicate the influence of the dynamic heterogeneity in both the primary and secondary relaxations due to the cis-trans isomerism in c-t-1,4-PBD and their impact into the PALS response.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: The age and comorbidity of patients admitted to Otolaryngology are increasing, leading to increased consultations/referrals to Internal Medicine, but do not reach the required effectiveness. An alternative is comanagement. A study is conducted on the effect of comanagement on Otolaryngology. METHODS: A retrospective observational study was conducted on patients ≥16 years old admitted in Otolaryngology between 03 December 2017 and 03 December 2019, since 03/12/2018 with comanagement with Internal Medicine since 03 December 2018. An analysis was performed on age, gender, type of admission, and whether the patient had surgery, administrative weight associated with (diagnosis-related group) DRG, total number of diagnoses at discharge, Charlson comorbidity index, deaths, urgent readmissions, and length of stay. RESULTS: Comanaged patients were younger (3.1 years, 95% confidence interval [95% CI] 1.4 to 4.8), but with higher Charlson comorbidity index (0.2; 95% CI; 0.1 to 0.3), number of diagnoses (0.9; 95% CI; 0.6 to 1.2), and administrative weight (0.04; 95% CI; 0 to 0.09). On adjustment, comanagement reduced Otolaryngology length of stay by 26.7%, 0.8 days (95% CI; 0.3 to 1.3), 50% of urgent readmissions, and 60% mortality, both non-significant. The decrease in length of stay implies an Otolaryngology savings of at least € 320,476.5. CONCLUSIONS: Patients admitted to Otolaryngology are increasing in age and comorbidity. Comanagement is associated with reduced length of stay and costs similar to those observed in other surgical services.
