ABSTRACT

Background: : Warm acupuncture (WA) has analgesic and anti-inflammatory effects. However, the underlying mechanism of these effects remain unclear. Objectives: : To explore the analgesic and anti-inflammatory effects of WA and the potential underlying mechanism in male Sprague-Dawley rats with non-compressive lumbar disk herniation (LDH) caused by autologous nucleus pulposus (NP) transplantation. Methods: : We used low-frequency (2 Hz) electrical stimulation and WA (40℃) to treat GB30 and BL54 acupoints in rats for 30 mins per day. We monitored the paw withdrawal threshold of rats during the experiment and measured serum cytokine levels using commercial kits. Dorsal root ganglion (DRG) tissue pathology was analyzed via H&E staining. We used qRT-PCR to measure the mRNA expression levels of IL-1ß, IL-6, and TNF-α genes in DRG. Western blot was used to analyze the expression levels of IL-1ß, IL-6, TNFα, P-p38MAPK, p38MAPK, P-IκBα, IκB α, and NF-κB p65 proteins. Results: : WA treatment significantly increased the pain threshold of rats, reduced serum IL-6, PEG2, NO, SP, NP-Y, and MMP-3 levels, and effected histopathological improvements in the DRG in rats. Moreover, WA treatment significantly downregulated the expression levels of inflammation-associated genes (Il-1ß, Il-6, and Tnf-α) and proteins (IL-1ß, IL-6, TNF-α, P-p38MAPK, P-IκBα, and NF-κB p65) in the DRG of non-compressive LDH rats. Conclusion: : WA can alleviate pain and inhibit inflammatory response in rats with non-compressive LDH caused by autologous NP transplantation, and these effects are likely associated with the inhibition of the p38MAPK/NF-κB pathway.

ABSTRACT

Microangiopathy is the most basic pathological manifestation of lupus nephritis (LN), and glomerular endothelial cells (GECs) injury is an important pathological mechanism. LN patients with microangiopathy are prone to steroid resistance (SR). Our previous studies confirmed that Panax notoginseng saponins (PNS) could reverse SR by downregulating the expression of P-gp in SR lymphocytes of LN mice (SLCsL/S). However, the mechanism of how circulating lymphocytes transmit SR information to GECs and thus affect the efficacy of kidney treatment is not clear. Recent studies have found that exosomes (exos) are an important carrier for intercellular bioactive substance communication. But whether exosomes derived from SLCsL/S mediate SR in GECs and PNS interventions. To solve this problem, Exosomes isolated from SLCsL/S were characterized, and in vitro cell coculture was further conducted to investigate the effect of SLCsL/S-derived exosomes in the SR of GECs and PNS intervention. Sequencing was used to define the exosomal miRNA expression profiling of SR GECs. Moreover, the in vivo experiments were performed through the injection of exosomes extracted from SLCsL/S into the tail vein of mice. Our research results indicate that exosomes derived from SLCsL/S could transmit SR information to GECs and lead to the aggravation of inflammatory injury through conferring P-gp, which were negated by a P-gp inhibitor. Further, we identified higher levels of exosomal miR-125b-5p from SR GECs were associated with SR in LN and could serve as biomarker for the risk of developing SR. PNS could reverse the SR of GECs and alleviate inflammatory injury by suppressing exosomal P-gp levels from lymphocytes to GECs in vitro and in vivo. However, the specific molecular mechanism by which PNS regulates exosomes has not yet been elucidated, and we need to conduct more in-depth research in the future. Overall, Our findings suggest that exosomal transfer of SLCsL/S derived P-gp confer SR to GECs, and PNS can target exosome communication to reverse SR in LN, which provides new ideas and a scientific basis for improving the clinical efficacy of traditional Chinese medicine in the treatment of refractory LN.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: To evaluate the effectiveness and safety of Xingnaojing combined with naloxone in the treatment of carbon monoxide poisoning. METHODS: By retrieving the literatures published in the databases of PubMed, Cochrane Library, Web of Science, Embase, Wanfang Database, Weipu Database, and China National Knowledge Infrastructure from January 2010 to September 2021, the data of randomized controlled trials (RCTs) of Xingnaojing combined with naloxone in the treatment of carbon monoxide poisoning were extracted. The methodological quality of the included RCTs was evaluated by using the tools of bias risk evaluation of Cochrane Collaboration, and the data were statistically analyzed by using RevMan 5.3 software. RESULTS: A total of 20 literatures were included, involving in 771 cases treated by Xingnaojing combined with naloxone and 761 cases in the control group. The effective rate of the experimental group is higher than that of the control group [risk ratio (RR) = 1.20, 95% confidence interval (CI) (1.14, 1.26)]. The average awake time (STD mean difference = -2.08, 95% CI [-2.60, -1.56]), physical recovery time (STD mean difference = -2.94, 95% CI [-3.59, -2.28]), delayed encephalopathy (RR = 0.44, 95% CI [0.31, 0.62]), and adverse reactions (RR = 0.23, 95% CI [0.10, 0.54]) was lower than that of the control group. CONCLUSION: Xingnaojing combined with naloxone in the treatment of carbon monoxide poisoning is significantly superior to naloxone, but it still needs to be further verified by high-quality large samples of RCTs.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to investigate the long-term effect of vitamin D supplementation compared to placebo over 5 years in participants with knee osteoarthritis (OA). We also aimed to describe the effect of maintaining sufficient serum vitamin D levels over five years in knee OA. METHODS: Participants (n = 173) from the Hobart centre of the Vitamin D Effects on Osteoarthritis (VIDEO) trial were extensively followed up 3 years after the cessation of 2-year investigational treatment. Participants were classified as maintaining sufficient vitamin D (n = 79) and not maintaining sufficient vitamin D (n = 61) groups. RESULTS: There was no significant difference in change in the knee symptoms, depression, and serum levels of IL6 and hs-CRP between both comparisons after 3 years of cessation of the clinical trial. However, among participants who reported no knee surgery (KS), there was a significant improvement in WOMAC function (ß: - 83.7, 95% CI: - 167.3, 0) and depression scores (ß: - 1.3, 95% CI: - 2.3, - 0.2) in vitamin D group compared to the placebo group. Similarly, those who maintained adequate vitamin D levels over 5 years had significantly less WOMAC knee pain (ß: - 33.9, 95% CI: - 65.7, - 2) and physical dysfunction (ß: - 105.5, 95% CI: - 198.2, - 12.8) than participants with vitamin D deficiency over 5 years. CONCLUSION: Vitamin D supplementation over 2 years or maintaining vitamin D sufficiency for 5 years was not associated with statistically significant differences in change in knee symptom scores over 5 years. However, among participants who did not report KS, 2-year vitamin D supplementation and maintaining sufficient vitamin D was linked to modest improvements in knee symptoms and depression scores in knee OA.

ABSTRACT

Estuarine mangrove wetlands have gradually declined owing to the growing construction of aquaculture ponds. How the speciation, transition, and migration of phosphorus (P) adaptively change in the sediments of this pond-wetland ecosystem remains unclear. In this study, we used high-resolution devices to explore the contrasting P behaviors associated with the redox cycles of Fe-Mn-S-As in estuarine and pond sediments. The results showed that the construction of aquaculture ponds increased the content or percentage of the silt, organic carbon, and P fractions in sediments. Dissolved organic P (DOP) concentrations in pore water were fluctuant with depths, accounting for only 18±15% and 20±11% of total dissolved P (TDP) in estuarine and pond sediment, respectively. Furthermore, DOP was less strongly correlated with other P species, including Fe, Mn, and sulfide. The coupling of dissolved reactive P (DRP) and TDP with Fe and sulfide confirmed that P mobility is regulated by Fe redox cycling in estuarine sediments, whereas Fe(III) reduction and sulfate reduction co-regulate P remobilization in pond sediments. The apparent diffusion flux revealed all sediments acting as sources for TDP (0.04-0.1 mg m-2 d-1) to the overlying water, while mangrove sediments were sources of DOP, and pond sediments were major sources of DRP. The DIFS model overestimated the P kinetic resupply ability, which was evaluated using DRP rather than TDP. This study improves our understanding of P cycling and budget in aquaculture pond-mangrove ecosystems and has important implications for understanding water eutrophication more effectively.

ABSTRACT

Oleanolic acid derivative DKS26 has hypolipidemic, islet, and hepatoprotective effects. However, high lipophilicity and low water solubility led to DKS26 extremely low oral bioavailability. Herein, lipid-based nanocarriers, including lipid nanodiscs (sND/DKS26) and liposomes (sLip/DKS26), are prepared to improve DKS26 oral absorption. In comparison to free DKS26 (5.81%), the absolute oral bioavailabilities are significantly increased to 29.47% (sND/DKS26) and 37.25% (sLip/DKS26) without detectable toxicity or immunogenicity even after repeated administrations. Both sND/DKS26 and sLip/DKS26 significantly reduce the feeding glucose level and the AUC of OGTT in db/db diabetic mice. Aiding by the newly developed scFv-based nanocarrier separation methods, no intact nanocarriers are detected in blood circulation after oral administration, suggesting that both formulations are unable to penetrate the intestinal epithelium. They enhance DKS26 absorption mainly by improving intestinal cell uptake and rapid intracellular release of the payload. Since pre-existing anti-PEG is widely detected in humans, the present oral absorption pathway of both nanocarriers successfully avoids unfavorable immunological responses after interaction with anti-PEG antibodies. The application of lipid-based nanocarriers paves an efficient and safe avenue for the clinical translation and application of poorly soluble therapeutics derived from traditional Chinese medicine.

ABSTRACT

Objective: To observe roproductive hormone levels in varicocele patients during a cycle (6 years) of Wu Yun Liu Qi, and explore whether the cycle had effect on the roproductive hormone levels. Methods: Data of roproductive hormone levels in varicocele patients from 2015 to 2020 were analyzed retrospectively. FSH、LH、T、PRL、E2 levels and T/E2 ratio were compared among the six years. According to Chinese sexagenary cycle heavenly stems and earthly branches of each year from 2015 to 2020 its yunqi characteristics were determined. Results: Totally data of 848 cases of varicocele patients were collected from 2015 to 2020. Among which, in 2015 (Yiwei year) there were 57 cases, in 2016 (Bingshen year) 83 cases, in 2017 (Dingyou year ) 133 cases, in 2018(Wuxu year) 156 cases, in 2019(Sihai year) 274 cases, and in 2020(Gengzi year) 145 cases. The levels of FSH、LH、PRL、T were not diferrent statistically from the six years except individual year. However, the level of E2 in 2016 when the Yunqi was Shao Yang Xiang Huo Si Tian and Jue Yin Feng Mu Zai Quan obviously higher than other years excpet 2018( All P< 0.05). And T/E2 ratio was lower in 2016 than other years except 2018 and 2020( All P< 0.05). Conclusions: Shi Xiang factors of Wu Yun Liu Qi had effect on roproductive hormone levels in varicocele patients, showing by higher E2 level in Yinshen year when the Shi Xiang factors may have bad effect on human fertility.

To explore the effect of manganese, iron, and sulfur geochemistry on the distribution of labile phosphorus in different estuarine areas, the diffusion gradient in thin-film (DGT) sampling technique was used for in-situ high-resolution monitoring of available phosphorus (DGT-P), manganese, iron, and sulfur in sediments from Xixi River estuary in Xiamen. The results showed that the distribution of DGT-P in the vertical profile was closely related to the redox transformation of iron and sulfur and the background value of active phosphorus in sediments. The passivation/activation of phosphorus was mainly controlled by the oxidative adsorption/reductive dissolution of phosphorus by iron oxides and the activation of phosphorus induced by sulfate reduction and sulfide accumulation. Along the sampling sites, the average concentration of DGT-P varied greatly (0.075-0.80 mg·L-1), which was not related to salinity but closely related to redox conditions, that is, the deeper the oxidation zone, the lower the average concentration of DGT-P. The simulation results showed that the phosphorus resupply capacity from surface sediments to porewater was correlated with DGT-P concentration and redox conditions, that is, the oxidative environment was unconducive to the desorption and resupply of sediment phosphorus, whereas the coupling with iron and sulfur geochemistry in the reducing environment was conducive to the maintenance of high labile phosphorus concentration and the continuous release of phosphorus.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE: To conduct a systematic review of the efficacy and safety of Shenyankangfu tablets in combination with losartan potassium in the treatment of chronic glomerulonephritis. METHOD: We searched PubMed, Embase, Cochrane Library, CNKI, WanFang Data, and WeiPu for comparative studies on Shenyankangfu tablets in combination with losartan potassium in the treatment of chronic glomerulonephritis. The search period runs from the establishment of the database until September 2021. Data extraction and quality evaluation were carried out on the documents that met the inclusion criteria, and a meta-analysis of the included literature was conducted using the RevMan5.3 software. RESULTS: A total of 17 randomized controlled trials that met the inclusion criteria were included, with a total sample size of 1680 patients (841 patients in the study group and 839 in the control group). The effective rate was significantly higher in the study group than in the control group [RR = 1.22, 95% CI (1.16, 1.27), P < 0.00001]. In addition, 24-hour urine protein levels [SMD = -1.11, 95% CI (-1.40, -0.83), P < 0.00001], urine NAG enzyme [SMD = -0.99, 95% CI (-1.27, -0.72), P < 0.00001], leukotactin-1 [SMD = -2.43, 95% CI (-3.50, -1.35), P < 0.00001], and the incidence of adverse reactions [RR = 0.43, 95% CI (0.28, 0.66), P < 0.00001] were lower in the study group when compared to the control group. CONCLUSION: It is safer to treat chronic glomerulonephritis with Shyenyankangfu tablets in combination with losartan potassium. At the same time, it alleviates disease-related symptoms, reduces the influence of cytokine levels, and has fewer adverse reactions, making it more conducive to disease recovery. However, additional multi-center, randomized, control trials with large sample sizes must be conducted to confirm the findings.

ABSTRACT

Vitamin C (VitC) has shown great promise to promote cancer immunotherapy, however, its high hydrophilicity makes it quickly excreted, leading to limited therapeutic efficiency even with frequent high-dose administration. Herein, we provide a pioneering report about the employment of VitC amphiphile self-assembled nanofiber hydrogels for enhanced cancer immunotherapy. Specifically, driven by hydrogen bonding and hydrophobic interactions, the synthesized VitC amphiphile, consisting of a hydrophilic VitC headgroup and a hydrophobic alkyl chain, could self-assemble into an injectable nanofiber hydrogel with self-healing properties. The formed VitC hydrogel not only serves as a reservoir for VitC but also acts as an effective delivery platform for stimulator of interferon genes (STING) agonist-4 (SA). Interestingly, the VitC hydrogel itself exhibits antitumor effects by upregulating genes related to interferon (IFN) signaling, apoptotic signaling and viral recognition and defense. Moreover, the SA-encapsulated VitC hydrogel (SA@VitC hydrogel) synergistically activated the immune system to inhibit the progression of both local and abscopal tumors.

BACKGROUND AND AIM: Dietary fat intake has long been associated with fatty liver. Our study aimed to determine the effect of dietary fats on longitudinal fatty liver index (FLI) trajectories from adolescence to young adulthood. METHODS: Nine hundred eighty-five participants in the Raine Study, Perth, Western Australia, Australia, had cross-sectional assessments at ages 14, 17, 20 and 22 years, during which anthropometric measurements and blood tests were obtained. FLI trajectories were derived from the longitudinal FLI results. Dietary fat intake was measured with a semi-quantitative food frequency questionnaire at 14 years and log multinominal regression analyses were used to estimate relative risks. RESULTS: Three FLI trajectories were identified and labelled as stable-low (79.1%, N = 782), low-to-high (13.9%, N = 132), and stable-high (7%, N = 71). The low-to-high group associated with an increased intake of the long-chain polyunsaturated fatty acids EPA, DPA and DHA (RR 1.27, 95% CI 1.10-1.48) relative to the stable-low group. Compared to the stable-low group, omega-6 and the ratio of omega-6 to omega-3 in the stable-high group were associated with an increased relative risk of 1.34 (95% CI 1.02-1.76) and 1.10 (95% CI 1.03-1.16), respectively. CONCLUSION: For those at high risk of fatty liver in early adolescence, high omega-6 fatty acid intake and a high ratio of omega-6 to omega-3 fatty acids are associated with increased risk of fatty liver. There should be caution in assuming these associations are causal due to possible undetected and underestimated confounding factors.

ABSTRACT

Three new aglain derivatives (1-3), one known aglain derivative (4), two known rocaglamide derivatives (5 and 6), four known triterpenoids (7-10), and three steroids (11-13) were isolated from Aglaia odorata Lour. Their structures were established through the analysis of detailed spectroscopic data and electronic circular dichroism calculations. Five compounds (1 and 4-7) exhibited cytotoxic activities on human leukemia cells (HEL) and human breast cancer cells with IC50 values in the range of 0.03-8.40 µM. In particular, the cytotoxicity of compound 5 was six times stronger than that of the positive control (adriamycin) in HEL cell lines.

BACKGROUND: P-glycoprotein (P-gp)-mediated steroid resistance (SR) has been suggested to play a significant role in lupus nephritis (LN) treatment failure. Panax notoginseng saponins (PNS), the main effective components of the traditional Chinese medicine notoginseng, exhibited potent reversal capability of P-gp-mediated SR, but its mechanism remains unknown. This study aimed to investigate the effect of PNS on reversing SR in lupus and its underlying mechanism in vivo and in vitro. METHODS: In this study, an SR animal and splenic lymphocyte model were established using low-dose methylprednisolone (MP). Flow cytometry was used to detect the effect of PNS on reversing P-gp-mediated SR and the expression of P-gp in different T-cells phenotypes. Serum levels of ANA and dsDNA in lupus mice were measured by ELISA. Apoptosis was identified by Annexin V-FITC/PI staining. RT-PCR and Western blotting were used to detect the protein and mRNA expression levels of SIRT1, FoxO1, and MDR1 in SR splenic lymphocytes from lupus mice (SLCs/MPs). RESULTS: PNS could reverse the SR in lupus mice. Simultaneously, PNS increased the apoptotic effect of MP on SLCs/MP cells. The increased accumulation of rhodamine-123 (Rh-123) indicated that intracellular steroid accumulation could be increased by the action of PNS. Moreover, PNS decreased the expression of P-gp levels. Further experiments elucidated that the SIRT1/FoxO1/MDR1 signalling pathway existed in SLCs/MP cells, and PNS suppressed its expression level to reverse SR. The expression of P-gp in Th17 from SLCs/MP cells was increased, while PNS could reduce its level in a more obvious trend. CONCLUSION: The present study suggested that PNS reversed P-gp-mediated SR via the SIRT1/FoxO1/MDR1 signalling pathway, which might become a valuable drug for the treatment of SR in lupus. Th17 might be the main effector cell of PNS reversing SR.

PURPOSE: Report of experience from a single institution in treating postoperative lymphatic leakage (PLL) applying conventional transpedal lymphangiography (TL). MATERIALS AND METHODS: 453 patients with the initial diagnosis of PLL receiving TL between 03/1993 and 09/2018 were identified in the database. Only patients with confirmed PLL were included in the study. The technical success, safety, and treatment success of TL were evaluated. Independent predictors of TL treatment failure were examined using univariate and multivariate logistic regression analysis. RESULTS: 355 consecutive patients (218 men, 137 women; median age of 62 years) who underwent TL for PLL (e. g., chylothorax) after ineffective conservative treatment were included. The median time between causal surgery and TL was 27 days. The median technical success rate of TL was 88.5 %, with a median volume of Lipiodol of 10.0 ml. No complication of TL was recorded. Three groups were defined according to the different clinical courses: group A (41/355, 11.5 %) - TL with technical failure; group B (258/355, 72.7 %) - "therapeutic" TL alone with technical success; and group C (56/355, 15.8 %) - "diagnostic" TL with simultaneously invasive treatment (incl. surgical revision and percutaneous sclerotherapy). Treatment success rate and median time to treatment success were higher in group C than in group B, but without significant differences (64.3 % vs. 61.6 %, p = 0.710; six vs. five days, p = 0.065). Univariate and multivariate logistic regression analyses for group B confirmed drainage volume (> 500 ml/d) and Lipiodol extravasation as independent predictors of TL clinical failure (odds ratios [ORs] of 2.128 and 2.372 [p = 0.005 and p = 0.003, respectively]). CONCLUSION: TL is technically reliable, safe, and effective in treating PLL. When conservative treatment fails, TL can be regarded as the next treatment option. ABSTRACT

The geochemistry of iron (Fe), manganese (Mn) and sulfur (S) and their effects on arsenic (As) mobility in the mudflats of small river estuaries remain unclear. Here, diffusive gradient in thin films (DGT) and high-resolution dialysis (HR-Peeper) techniques combined with a sequential extraction procedure (BCR) were employed to investigate As, Fe, Mn and S geochemistry in the mudflat of the Jiuxi River estuary, Southeast China. Grain size analysis indicated that fine-grained particles were likely to be deposited in the estuarine intertidal zone and coastal area. DGT and HR-Peeper results revealed that in the estuary and coastal area, the dissolved As in sediment in summer was controlled by Mn geochemistry, which includes not only the release of As through Mn/Fe reduction but also the stabilization of dissolved As in pore water. This stabilization of dissolved As may due to the formation of As-Mn-OM complexes. In winter, the significant positive correlations between DGT-Fe, DGT-Mn, DGT-As and DGT-S indicated that sulfate reduction was the start of As mobilization in sediment in winter. In both the estuary and the coastal area, the easily reducible Fe, Mn and As contents in intertidal sediment were higher than those in the subtidal zone. Combined with the As flux across the sediment-overlying water interface (SWI), these phenomena suggested that As in subtidal sediment diffused into overlying water and that As in overlying water tended to accumulate in the intertidal sediment. The total organic carbon content (TOC) and DGT results in the lower reach, estuary and coastal areas indicated that organic matter is the controlling factor of Fe/Mn reduction, sulfate reduction and As mobilization. The BCR test results showed higher reactive fraction contents of Fe, Mn and As in winter sediment, which threaten the overlying water quality.

ABSTRACT

Estuarine sediments are crucial repositories and incubators of molybdenum (Mo) during its transport from rivers to the ocean. Here, Mo mobility and related processes in estuarine sediments were explored using high-resolution dialysis (HR-Peeper) and diffusive gradients in thin films (DGT) techniques. Better correlations were observed between dissolved Mn and Mo than between dissolved Fe and Mo, implying that Mn geochemistry plays a key role in dissolved Mo mobility via molybdate adsorption onto abundant Mn oxides and its substantial release upon intense Mn reduction. As a result, oxic intertidal sediments functioned as Mo sinks, and anoxic subtidal sediments functioned as Mo sources. The opposite vertical distributions between DGT-Labile S and DGT-Labile Mo indicated that the availability of labile Mo can be blocked by aqueous sulfide. However, the corresponding high concentrations of DGT-Labile S and dissolved Mo at subtidal sites demonstrated that the abundant dissolved Mo remobilized via Mn reduction was not effectively solidified by sulfide. Simulation with the DIFS model further verified that redox conditions and induced physicochemical processes are crucial factors controlling Mo mobility, with relatively low dissolved Mo concentrations but an adequate and steady resupply capacity of the bioavailable molybdate in intertidal sediments.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE: To illustrate the academic influence of Chinese Journal of Integrated Traditional and Western medicine, and provide suggestions for further development of the Journal. METHODS: Taking the China National Knowledge Infrastructure (CNKI) database as main source and the Chinese Science Citation Database (CSCD) as reference, the researchers retrieved the related data of the Journal such as its publication quantity, citations, fund projects, authors, institutions and regions from 1981 to 2018, analyzed these data by means of bibliometrics and information visualization with EXCEL, SPSS, VISIO, MATLAB and other softwares. RESULTS: Through the analysis of the main indicators, the relevant indicators of the Journal's academic influence revealed the developing trend of the Journal. Cardiovascular and cerebrovascular diseases, endocrine, digestive system, pharmacological research of Chinese medicine and gynecology, as the hot topics in the discipline and academic, were clarified. CONCLUSIONS: All indicators show that the Journal is a high-quality journal reflecting the excellent achievements in the field of integrated Chinese and Western medicine in China. Through further analysis of relevant indicators, the authors put forward some specific suggestions on how to run the Journal well.

ABSTRACT

The present study aimed to detect selenium (Se) levels in the blood of Enshi Prefecture residents in China and investigate the relationship between blood Se levels and glucose or lipid metabolism disorder. A cross-sectional study was conducted, and 1876 subjects were selected through cluster random sampling from Enshi Prefecture using a questionnaire survey, physical examinations, and biochemical blood tests. The mean blood Se level in the overall population was 0.128 ± 0.178 µg/mL. Se exhibits a "U"-shaped curve on the serum fasting plasma glucose (FPG) of the total samples, that is, when the blood Se is more than 0.131 µg/mL or less than 0.062 µg/mL, the FPG increases significantly. A significant negative correlation was demonstrated between the FPG levels of the 4-17-year-old age group and different blood Se levels (P < 0.001). No significant correlation was demonstrated between the serum triglyceride (TG) and blood Se levels. However, a positive correlation was demonstrated between blood Se and serum total cholesterol (TC) levels and the incidence of high cholesterol in the total population (P < 0.001). The odds ratio and related 95% confidence interval for the incidence of high cholesterol between the highest (≥ 0.133 µg/mL) and lowest blood Se (< 0.064 µg/mL) levels was 2.64 and 1.48-4.79, respectively. The results of this study are very important for the safety scope and risk-benefit assessment of Se in the human; however, further investigation with a larger sample size is required.

ABSTRACT

As a trace heavy metal, lead (Pb) has many anthropogenic applications but also produces many environmental pollution problems because of its high toxicity. In this study, we combined two in situ high-resolution sampling techniques - high-resolution dialysis (HR-Peeper) and diffusive gradients in thin films (DGT) - with the DGT-induced fluxes in sediment (DIFS) model to explore the mechanism of Pb release and resupply between sediments and pore water in the lower reaches and estuary of the Jiuxi River and the adjacent coast. An analysis of the chemical forms of Pb in the sediments showed that the content of the acid-extractable fraction (F1) was higher at the coastal site than at the other sampling sites, which indicates that Pb in the coastal sediments had greater activity and was more likely to cause Pb pollution. The apparent diffusion fluxes of Pb across the sediment-water interface (SWI) in the lower reaches, estuary and coastal zone are negative, and the absolute value of Pb flux in the estuary is several times higher than that in the other two stations, indicating a strong downward Pb diffusion trend, which may be due to water pollution caused by the nearby sewage outlet. As an insensitive element to redox, Pb did not exhibit an obvious correlation with Fe. In particular, the high Pb concentration and strong downward diffusion trend of the overlying water in the estuary caused the significant negative correlation between Pb and Fe. The calculated results of the DIFS model show that the reduced layer in the intertidal zone along the coast has the highest R value, the highest desorption rate (k-1) and the shortest response time (Tc), indicating that sediment particles in the coastal intertidal zone supply Pb to the pore water at the fastest rate; consequently, Pb pollution in the coastal zone is worthy of further attention.
