RESUMEN

We investigated the high energy spin excitations in electron-doped La_{2-x}Ce_{x}CuO_{4}, a cuprate superconductor, by resonant inelastic x-ray scattering (RIXS) measurements. Efforts were paid to disentangle the paramagnon signal from non-spin-flip spectral weight mixing in the RIXS spectrum at Q_{∥}=(0.6π,0) and (0.9π,0) along the (1 0) direction. Our results show that, for doping level x from 0.07 to 0.185, the variation of the paramagnon excitation energy is marginal. We discuss the implication of our results in connection with the evolution of the electron correlation strength in this system.

RESUMEN

A new approach to the synthesis of the (-)-205B alkaloid is described in this paper. This work is characterised by the development of an efficient chirality transfer through a silyl tethered intramolecular alkylation reaction, an unprecedented tandem highly selective iridium catalyzed partial reduction of lactam coupled with an acid promoted aza-Prins reaction, and an almost complete stereochemical control in Shenvi's radical hydrogen atom transfer on an exocyclic methylene. The second part of this work demonstrates the positive allosteric behavior of this natural alkaloid toward α7 nAChRs, in contrast to the reported inhibitory effect of the unnatural enantiomer.

RESUMEN

We use resonant inelastic x-ray scattering to probe the propagation of plasmons in the electron-doped cuprate superconductor Sr_{0.9}La_{0.1}CuO_{2}. We detect a plasmon gap of ∼120 meV at the two-dimensional Brillouin zone center, indicating that low-energy plasmons in Sr_{0.9}La_{0.1}CuO_{2} are not strictly acoustic. The plasmon dispersion, including the gap, is accurately captured by layered t-J-V model calculations. A similar analysis performed on recent resonant inelastic x-ray scattering data from other cuprates suggests that the plasmon gap is generic and its size is related to the magnitude of the interlayer hopping t_{z}. Our work signifies the three dimensionality of the charge dynamics in layered cuprates and provides a new method to determine t_{z}.

Cellular activity in the brain depends on the high energetic support provided by mitochondria, the cell organelles which use energy sources to generate ATP. Acute cannabinoid intoxication induces amnesia in humans and animals, and the activation of type-1 cannabinoid receptors present at brain mitochondria membranes (mtCB1) can directly alter mitochondrial energetic activity. Although the pathological impact of chronic mitochondrial dysfunctions in the brain is well established, the involvement of acute modulation of mitochondrial activity in high brain functions, including learning and memory, is unknown. Here, we show that acute cannabinoid-induced memory impairment in mice requires activation of hippocampal mtCB1 receptors. Genetic exclusion of CB1 receptors from hippocampal mitochondria prevents cannabinoid-induced reduction of mitochondrial mobility, synaptic transmission and memory formation. mtCB1 receptors signal through intra-mitochondrial Gαi protein activation and consequent inhibition of soluble-adenylyl cyclase (sAC). The resulting inhibition of protein kinase A (PKA)-dependent phosphorylation of specific subunits of the mitochondrial electron transport system eventually leads to decreased cellular respiration. Hippocampal inhibition of sAC activity or manipulation of intra-mitochondrial PKA signalling or phosphorylation of the Complex I subunit NDUFS2 inhibit bioenergetic and amnesic effects of cannabinoids. Thus, the G protein-coupled mtCB1 receptors regulate memory processes via modulation of mitochondrial energy metabolism. By directly linking mitochondrial activity to memory formation, these data reveal that bioenergetic processes are primary acute regulators of cognitive functions.

Cholesterol is a major component of mammalian plasma membranes that not only affects the physical properties of the lipid bilayer but also is the function of many membrane proteins including G protein-coupled receptors. The oxytocin receptor (OXTR) is involved in parturition and lactation of mammals and in their emotional and social behaviors. Cholesterol acts on OXTR as an allosteric modulator inducing a high-affinity state for orthosteric ligands through a molecular mechanism that has yet to be determined. Using the ion channel-coupled receptor technology, we developed a functional assay of cholesterol modulation of G protein-coupled receptors that is independent of intracellular signaling pathways and operational in living cells. Using this assay, we discovered a stable binding of cholesterol molecules to the receptor when it adopts an orthosteric ligand-bound state. This stable interaction preserves the cholesterol-dependent activity of the receptor in cholesterol-depleted membranes. This mechanism was confirmed using time-resolved FRET experiments on WT OXTR expressed in CHO cells. Consequently, a positive cross-regulation sequentially occurs in OXTR between cholesterol and orthosteric ligands.

The search continues for nickel oxide-based materials with electronic properties similar to cuprate high-temperature superconductors1-10. The recent discovery of superconductivity in the doped infinite-layer nickelate NdNiO2 (refs. 11,12) has strengthened these efforts. Here, we use X-ray spectroscopy and density functional theory to show that the electronic structure of LaNiO2 and NdNiO2, while similar to the cuprates, includes significant distinctions. Unlike cuprates, the rare-earth spacer layer in the infinite-layer nickelate supports a weakly interacting three-dimensional 5d metallic state, which hybridizes with a quasi-two-dimensional, strongly correlated state with [Formula: see text] symmetry in the NiO2 layers. Thus, the infinite-layer nickelate can be regarded as a sibling of the rare-earth intermetallics13-15, which are well known for heavy fermion behaviour, where the NiO2 correlated layers play an analogous role to the 4f states in rare-earth heavy fermion compounds. This Kondo- or Anderson-lattice-like 'oxide-intermetallic' replaces the Mott insulator as the reference state from which superconductivity emerges upon doping.

The discovery of superconductivity in a d^{9-δ} nickelate has inspired disparate theoretical perspectives regarding the essential physics of this class of materials. A key issue is the magnitude of the magnetic superexchange, which relates to whether cuprate-like high-temperature nickelate superconductivity could be realized. We address this question using Ni L-edge and O K-edge spectroscopy of the reduced d^{9-1/3} trilayer nickelates R_{4}Ni_{3}O_{8} (where R=La, Pr) and associated theoretical modeling. A magnon energy scale of ∼80 meV resulting from a nearest-neighbor magnetic exchange of J=69(4) meV is observed, proving that d^{9-δ} nickelates can host a large superexchange. This value, along with that of the Ni-O hybridization estimated from our O K-edge data, implies that trilayer nickelates represent an intermediate case between the infinite-layer nickelates and the cuprates. Layered nickelates thus provide a route to testing the relevance of superexchange to nickelate superconductivity.

Understanding many-body physics of elementary excitations has advanced our control over material properties. Here, we study spin-flip excitations in NiO using Ni L_{3}-edge resonant inelastic x-ray scattering (RIXS) and present a strikingly different resonant energy behavior between single and double spin-flip excitations. Comparing our results with single-site full-multiplet ligand field theory calculations we find that the spectral weight of the double-magnon excitations originates primarily from the double spin-flip transition of the quadrupolar RIXS process within a single magnetic site. Quadrupolar spin-flip processes are among the least studied excitations, despite being important for multiferroic or spin-nematic materials due to their difficult detection. We identify intermediate state multiplets and intra-atomic core-valence exchange interactions as the key many-body factors determining the fate of such excitations. RIXS resonant energy dependence can act as a convincing proof of existence of nondipolar higher-ranked magnetic orders in systems for which, only theoretical predictions are available.

High T_{c} superconductors show a rich variety of phases associated with their charge degrees of freedom. Valence charges can give rise to charge ordering or acoustic plasmons in these layered cuprate superconductors. While charge ordering has been observed for both hole- and electron-doped cuprates, acoustic plasmons have only been found in electron-doped materials. Here, we use resonant inelastic x-ray scattering to observe the presence of acoustic plasmons in two families of hole-doped cuprate superconductors (La_{1.84}Sr_{0.16}CuO_{4} and Bi_{2}Sr_{1.6}La_{0.4}CuO_{6+δ}), crucially completing the picture. Interestingly, in contrast to the quasistatic charge ordering which manifests at both Cu and O sites, the observed acoustic plasmons are predominantly associated with the O sites, revealing a unique dichotomy in the behavior of valence charges in hole-doped cuprates.

The discovery of charge-density-wave-related effects in the resonant inelastic x-ray scattering spectra of cuprates holds the tantalizing promise of clarifying the interactions that stabilize the electronic order. Here, we report a comprehensive resonant inelastic x-ray scattering study of La_{2-x}Sr_{x}CuO_{4} finding that charge-density wave effects persist up to a remarkably high doping level of x=0.21 before disappearing at x=0.25. The inelastic excitation spectra remain essentially unchanged with doping despite crossing a topological transition in the Fermi surface. This indicates that the spectra contain little or no direct coupling to electronic excitations near the Fermi surface, rather they are dominated by the resonant cross section for phonons and charge-density-wave-induced phonon softening. We interpret our results in terms of a charge-density wave that is generated by strong correlations and a phonon response that is driven by the charge-density-wave-induced modification of the lattice.

We use resonant inelastic x-ray scattering to investigate charge-stripe correlations in La_{1.675}Eu_{0.2}Sr_{0.125}CuO_{4}. By differentiating elastic from inelastic scattering, it is demonstrated that charge-stripe correlations precede both the structural low-temperature tetragonal phase and the transport-defined pseudogap onset. The scattering peak amplitude from charge stripes decays approximately as T^{-2} towards our detection limit. The in-plane integrated intensity, however, remains roughly temperature independent. Therefore, although the incommensurability shows a remarkably large increase at high temperature, our results are interpreted via a single scattering constituent. In fact, direct comparison to other stripe-ordered compounds (La_{1.875}Ba_{0.125}CuO_{4}, La_{1.475}Nd_{0.4}Sr_{0.125}CuO_{4}, and La_{1.875}Sr_{0.125}CuO_{4}) suggests a roughly constant integrated scattering intensity across all these compounds. Our results therefore provide a unifying picture for the charge-stripe ordering in La-based cuprates. As charge correlations in La_{1.675}Eu_{0.2}Sr_{0.125}CuO_{4} extend beyond the low-temperature tetragonal and pseudogap phase, their emergence heralds a spontaneous symmetry breaking in this compound.

Materials able to produce the reduction of nitrate from water without the need of a metal catalyst and with avoiding the use of gaseous hydrogen have been developed by combining the synergistic properties of titania and two conducting polymers. Polymerization of aniline and pyrrol on titanium dioxide in the presence of two different oxidants/dopants (iron trichloride or potassium persulfate) has been evaluated. The resulting hybrid materials have good thermal stability imparted by the titania counterpart, and a considerable conductivity provided by the conducting polymers. The capability of the hybrid materials of reducing aqueous nitrate has been assessed and compared to the catalytic hydrogenation of nitrate using a platinum catalyst supported on these hybrid synthesized materials. The mechanism of nitrate abatement implies adsorption of nitrate on the polymer by ion exchange with the dopant anion, followed by the reduction of nitrate. The electron transfer from titania to the conducting polymer in the hybrid material favors the reductive ability of the polymer, in such a way that nitrate is selectively reduced with a very low production of undesirable side products. The obtained results show that the activity and selectivity of the catalytic reduction of nitrate with dihydrogen in the presence of a platinum catalyst supported on the hybrid materials are considerably lower than those of the metal-free nanocomposites.

Surface plasmon resonance (SPR) monitoring of biorecognition events at intracellular levels is a valuable tool for studying the angiogenic response of carcinoma living cells during tumor growth and proliferation. We report here a comparative study of two different strategies to detect human hepatoma cell interactions between transmembrane vascular endothelial growth factor receptor (VEGFR2) and vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF). To monitor VEGFR2 activation after VEGF stimulation, intact hepatocellular carcinoma HepG2 or Huh7 cells (2 × 10(5) cells per mL) were directly immobilized on the sensor chip. Distinguishable SPR sensorgrams were obtained for each cell line depending on the time required for VEGFR2 activation. SPR signals for VEGF-VEGFR2 binding were inhibited by the VEGFR inhibitor, CBO-P11. The SPR response after VEGF stimulation/inhibition was in good agreement with the results observed by immunoblotting analysis. In a second approach we used intact cell lines as analytes. SPR analysis was done by injecting HepG2 and HuH7 cell suspensions (2-4 × 10(4) cells per mL) onto a sensor surface previously immobilized with VEGF via a thiol self-assembled monolayer (SAM). Specificity and reproducibility were evaluated reusing the same chip surface over more than 60 complete regeneration cycles. Comparison between both methods yielded differences in terms of reliability, making the latter strategy more effective for the analysis of real samples. The investigation of VEGF signaling in intact human hepatoma living cells by SPR monitoring comprises a novel and promising design for the study of tumor angiogenesis via downregulation of VEGF and VEGFR2 pathways. Further investigation on VEGFR activation and vascular function could contribute to establish a robust and meaningful tool for early cancer diagnostics.

In cardiac magnetic resonance imaging studies, left ventricular systolic function is usually calculated automatically. To understand and interpret parameters of left ventricular systolic function correctly, it is fundamental to understand how each parameter is obtained and why values obtained with different techniques, for example, ultrasonography and magnetic resonance imaging, can differ. This article provides details about the usual analysis of systolic function from the quantitative and qualitative points of view; it also explains other methods that do not require specific software. Moreover, we provide a file that we designed for use with Microsoft Excel(®) to enable simple, intuitive analysis of systolic function. Readers can use this file freely.

PURPOSE: To describe the clinical characteristics, presentation and response to treatment in posterior uveitis patients with bacillary layer detachment (BLD) seen on optical coherence tomography (OCT). MATERIALS AND METHODS: Retrospective review of patients with posterior uveitis and SD-OCT scans consistent with BLD. Data collected included demographics, uveitic etiology, treatment and duration of follow-up. Outcome measures included macular volume, central subfoveal thickness and visual acuity. RESULTS: Sixteen patients (20 eyes) were included. Twelve were female (75%). The mean age was 43.68 ± 14.7 years. The most frequent etiology of the uveitis was Vogt-Koyanagi-Harada (VKH) disease (n=10), followed by sympathetic ophthalmia (n=2). BLD was bilateral in four patients. Eight patients were treated with intravenous methylprednisolone boluses. Immunosuppressive therapies were required in 8 patients. The mean follow-up was 70 months (range: 2.0-216.0). CONCLUSION: BLD was observed in a series of posterior uveitis cases of various etiologies, showing functional and structural resolution with treatment in most cases.

A 66-year-old man with posterior uveitis and recurrent cystic macular edema related to possible previously treated Lyme disease is presented. Due to the recurrence of macular edema despite systemic and local corticosteroid treatment with intravitreal dexamethasone, biological treatment with Adalimumab was established. During follow-up, the patient developed bilateral subretinal lesions compatible with Vitreoretinal Lymphoma (VRL), so vitrectomy was performed, confirming the diagnosis of large B-cell lymphoma. Treatment with systemic chemotherapy with BRAM-Carmustine, Metrotexate, Ara C, and Rituximab was started with a good answer. Two years later, the patient remains without ocular or systemic recurrences. Vitreoretinal Lymphoma is a rare type of primary central nervous system lymphoma. The diagnosis is frequently delayed due to the nonspecific symptoms, which mimic chronic posterior uveitis, hence the importance with a diagnostic suspicion.

Between March and May of 2011, a cluster of three fatal cases of meningococcal sepsis occurred in Andalusia, Spain, in a municipality with a population of around 20,000 inhabitants. The cases were in their mid-teens to early thirties and were notified to the epidemiological surveillance system of Andalusia (Sistema de Vigilancia Epidemiológica de Andalucía, SVEA) during a 68-day period from March through May 2011. All three were infected with the same strain of Neisseria meningitidis serogroup C genosubtype VR1:5-1;VR2:10-8. None of the cases had been previously vaccinated against N. meningitidis serogroup C. Antibiotic post-exposure chemoprophylaxis was administered to close contacts of every diagnosed case. Once the cluster was confirmed, the local population was informed through the media about the control measures taken by the health authorities. The vaccination history against N. meningitidis serogroup C of the population under 25 years-old in the municipality was checked. Vaccination was offered to unimmunised individuals younger than 25 years of age and an additional dose of vaccine was offered to those who had been vaccinated between 2000 and 2006 with a vaccination schedule of three doses before the first year of age. No further cases occurred since the beginning of these actions.

The microscopic origins of emergent behaviours in condensed matter systems are encoded in their excitations. In ordinary magnetic materials, single spin-flips give rise to collective dipolar magnetic excitations called magnons. Likewise, multiple spin-flips can give rise to multipolar magnetic excitations in magnetic materials with spin S ≥ 1. Unfortunately, since most experimental probes are governed by dipolar selection rules, collective multipolar excitations have generally remained elusive. For instance, only dipolar magnetic excitations have been observed in isotropic S = 1 Haldane spin systems. Here, we unveil a hidden quadrupolar constituent of the spin dynamics in antiferromagnetic S = 1 Haldane chain material Y2BaNiO5 using Ni L3-edge resonant inelastic x-ray scattering. Our results demonstrate that pure quadrupolar magnetic excitations can be probed without direct interactions with dipolar excitations or anisotropic perturbations. Originating from on-site double spin-flip processes, the quadrupolar magnetic excitations in Y2BaNiO5 show a remarkable dual nature of collective dispersion. While one component propagates as non-interacting entities, the other behaves as a bound quadrupolar magnetic wave. This result highlights the rich and largely unexplored physics of higher-order magnetic excitations.
