RESUMEN

Pyroelectricity describes the generation of electricity by temporal temperature change in polar materials1-3. When free-standing pyroelectric materials approach the 2D crystalline limit, how pyroelectricity behaves remained largely unknown. Here, using three model pyroelectric materials whose bonding characters along the out-of-plane direction vary from van der Waals (In2Se3), quasi-van der Waals (CsBiNb2O7) to ionic/covalent (ZnO), we experimentally show the dimensionality effect on pyroelectricity and the relation between lattice dynamics and pyroelectricity. We find that, for all three materials, when the thickness of free-standing sheets becomes small, their pyroelectric coefficients increase rapidly. We show that the material with chemical bonds along the out-of-plane direction exhibits the greatest dimensionality effect. Experimental observations evidence the possible influence of changed phonon dynamics in crystals with reduced thickness on their pyroelectricity. Our findings should stimulate fundamental study on pyroelectricity in ultra-thin materials and inspire technological development for potential pyroelectric applications in thermal imaging and energy harvesting.

RESUMEN

Precise prediction of phase diagrams in molecular dynamics simulations is challenging due to the simultaneous need for long time and large length scales and accurate interatomic potentials. We show that thermodynamic integration from low-cost force fields to neural network potentials trained using density-functional theory (DFT) enables rapid first-principles prediction of the solid-liquid phase boundary in the model salt NaCl. We use this technique to compare the accuracy of several DFT exchange-correlation functionals for predicting the NaCl phase boundary and find that the inclusion of dispersion interactions is critical to obtain good agreement with experiment. Importantly, our approach introduces a method to predict solid-liquid phase boundaries for any material at an ab initio level of accuracy, with the majority of the computational cost at the level of classical potentials.

The use of potassium (K) metal anodes could result in high-performance K-ion batteries that offer a sustainable and low-cost alternative to lithium (Li)-ion technology. However, formation of dendrites on such K-metal surfaces is inevitable, which prevents their utilization. Here, we report that K dendrites can be healed in situ in a K-metal battery. The healing is triggered by current-controlled, self-heating at the electrolyte/dendrite interface, which causes migration of surface atoms away from the dendrite tips, thereby smoothening the dendritic surface. We discover that this process is strikingly more efficient for K as compared to Li metal. We show that the reason for this is the far greater mobility of surface atoms in K relative to Li metal, which enables dendrite healing to take place at an order-of-magnitude lower current density. We demonstrate that the K-metal anode can be coupled with a potassium cobalt oxide cathode to achieve dendrite healing in a practical full-cell device.

Through whole-genome bisulfite sequencing and RNA-seq, we determined the potential impact of autophagy in regulating DNA methylation in Arabidopsis, providing a solid foundation for further understanding the molecular mechanism of autophagy and how plants cope with nitrogen deficiency. A total of 335 notable differentially expressed genes (DEGs) were discovered in wild-type Arabidopsis (Col-0-N) and an autophagic mutant cultivated under nitrogen starvation (atg5-1-N). Among these, 142 DEGs were associated with hypomethylated regions (hypo-DMRs) and were upregulated. This suggests a correlation between DNA demethylation and the ability of Arabidopsis to cope with nitrogen deficiency. Examination of the hypo-DMR-linked upregulated DEGs indicated that the expression of MYB101, an ABA pathway regulator, may be regulated by DNA demethylation and the recruitment of transcription factors (TFs; ERF57, ERF105, ERF48, and ERF111), which may contribute to the growth arrest induced by abscisic acid (ABA). Additionally, we found that DNA methylation might impact the biosynthesis of salicylic acid (SA). The promoter region of ATGH3.12 (PBS3), a key enzyme in SA synthesis, was hypomethylated, combined with overexpression of PBS3 and its potential TF AT3G46070, suggesting that autophagy defects may lead to SA-activated senescence, depending on DNA demethylation. These findings suggest that DNA hypomethylation may impact the mechanism by which Arabidopsis autophagy mutants (atg5-1) respond to nitrogen deficiency, specifically in relation to ABA and SA regulation. Our evaluation of hormone levels verified that these two hormones are significantly enriched under nitrogen deficiency in atg5-1-N compared to Col-0-N.

Microplastics have been recognized as a novel niche for bacteria. However, studies have characterized the plastisphere microbial community in situ without exploring the microbial changes after transferring to other ecosystems. Here we focus on bacterial succession on typical microplastics (polypropylene and expanded polystyrene) and natural substrates (wood) after transferring from mariculture area to seagrass meadows system. Using high-throughput sequencing of 16 S rRNA, we found that alpha diversity significantly reduced after transferring and microplastics especially PP had significant separations on PCoA plots at different succession stages. The abundance and metabolic pathways of potential pathogen-associated microorganisms are significantly decreased. The relative abundance of xenobiotics biodegradation pathways was significantly lower and of energy metabolism pathways was significantly higher by comparing before and after transferring. Main environmental factors affecting microbial communities changed from nutrient characteristics to basic physicochemical properties after transferring. The succession times of the microbial communities of the three materials were different.

3D printing complex architectures of responsive-hydratable polymers are enabled by stereolithography via photopolymerization. Yet, insufficient crosslinking leads to compromised structural integrity of the photopolymerized samples, which affects the functionality and reliability of hydrogel devices significantly. Here we investigate how curing parameters and ink formulation affect 3D printed PEGDA samples by using a combination of microfabrication, structural characterization, and reactive coarse-grained molecular dynamics simulation. Our findings show that the degree of curing exhibits a graded profile from confocal Raman spectroscopy and submicron pores from atomic force microscopy, both of which are also observed in our molecular simulations. Moreover, with environmental scanning electron microscopy, we probe the microscopic swelling and bending dynamics of 3D printed hydratable PEGDA structures as well as their structural integrity. Our in-depth characterization results reveal how hydrogel elasticity and irreversible densification due to pore formation highly depends on the exposure time, light intensity and the associated degree of crosslinking. This work provides new molecular insights into processing-structure relation in stereolithography 3D printing.

By the reaction of inorganic-ligand CdS/Cd2+ quantum dots (QDs) with inorganic-ligand CdSe/CdS/S2- nanoplatelets (NPLs), semiconductor CdS QDs were fused with CdSe/CdS NPLs to yield all-inorganic assemblies, accompanied by great photoluminescence-enhancement. These all-inorganic assemblies facilitate charge transport between each other and open up interesting prospects with electronic and optoelectronic nanodevices.

BACKGROUND: Psittacosis, which is also known as parrot fever, is Chlamydia psittaci (C. psittaci) caused infectious disease. The clinical manifestations vary from asymptomatic infection to severe atypical pneumonia or even fatal meningitis. Early recognition of psittacosis is difficult because of its nonspecific clinical manifestations. Culture and gene probe techniques for C. psittaci are not available for routine clinical use, which makes the diagnosis difficult too. Although psittacosis has increasingly been recognized and reported in recent years, cure of severe pneumonia complicated with meningitis, with etiologic diagnosis aided by the use of metagenomic next-generation sequencing (mNGS), is still uncommon. So, it is necessary to report and review such potentially fatal case. CASE PRESENTATION: This report describes a 54-year-old woman with C. psittaci caused severe atypical pneumonia and meningitis. She presented with symptoms of fever, dry cough and dyspnea, accompanied by prominent headache. Her condition deteriorated rapidly to respiratory failure and lethargy under the treatment of empirical antibacterial agents, and was treated with invasive mechanical ventilation soon. She denied contact with birds, poultry or horses, but unbiased mNGS of both the bronchoalveolar lavage fluid (BALF) and the cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) identified sequence reads corresponding to C. psittaci infection, and there was no sequence read corresponding to other probable pathogens. Combined use of targeted antimicrobial agents of tetracyclines, macrolides and fluoroquinolones was carried out, and the patient's condition improved and she was discharged home 28 days later. Her status returned close to premorbid condition on day 60 of follow-up. CONCLUSIONS: When clinicians come across a patient with atypical pneumonia accompanied by symptoms of meningitis, psittacosis should be taken into consideration. mNGS is a promising detection method in such condition and is recommended.

Secondary methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) infection is a cause of severe pneumonia with high mortality during influenza A virus (IAV) pandemics. Alveolar macrophages (AMs) mount cellular defenses against IAV and MRSA infection, which occurs via the nucleotide-binding domain-like receptor protein 3 (NLRP3) inflammasome. However, the activity and function of the NLRP3 inflammasome in MRSA pneumonia secondary to IAV infection remain unclear. To clarify this, we studied MRSA infection secondary to IAV both in vitro and in mouse model. The expression of the NLRP3 inflammasome was evaluated by quantitative reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction, immunofluorescence, Western blot, and enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. The lung pathology and the rate of weight change were observed. We found that IAV infection for 1 week activated NLRP3 inflammasome. The enhanced expression of NLRP3, caspase-1, and cleaved caspase-1 was associated with MRSA infection secondary to IAV, but the expression of interleukin (IL)-1ß decreased in superinfection with MRSA both in vitro and in vivo. The aggravated inflammatory pathology in MRSA pneumonia secondary to IAV infection was associated with decreased expression of IL-1ß. And increased weight loss in MRSA pneumonia secondary to IAV infection was related to decreased concentration of IL-1ß in serum. It infers that superinfection with MRSA reduces expression of IL-1ß someway, and decreased expression of IL-1ß impairs the host immunity and leads to aggravated pneumonia. These results contributed to our understanding of the detailed activity of the NLRP3 inflammasome, IL-1ß, and their relationship with aggravation of MRSA pneumonia secondary to IAV infection. Immunotherapy targeting the IL-1ß signaling pathway could be possible therapeutic strategy for secondary MRSA pneumonia.

OBJECTIVE: The objective of this study was to measure the dissemination of comparative provider quality information (CPQI) and evaluate its impact on consumers' awareness and use of CPQI. DATA SOURCES: Two-period, random-digit-dial panel survey of chronically ill consumers residing in 14 regions of the United States; summaries of CPQI dissemination activities of regional multistakeholder alliances; and the LexisNexis Academic and Access World News databases. STUDY DESIGN/METHODS: Fixed effects regression to isolate the effect of CPQI producers' dissemination activities and the print media's CPQI coverage on chronically ill consumers' self-reported awareness and use of CPQI. PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: Direct CPQI dissemination had no overall effect on either awareness or use of CPQI. One unit increase in the media coverage of an Aligning Forces for Quality (AF4Q) multistakeholder alliance report increased consumer awareness and use of CPQI by 1.4 percentage points (P=0.049) and 1.1 percentage points (P=0.009), respectively. Similar increases for the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) CPQI and for the nonalliance, non-CMS CPQI improved CPQI use by 1.6 percentage points (P<0.001) and 0.2 percentage points (P=0.041), respectively. CONCLUSION: Even though CPQI producers' direct dissemination efforts had little impact, the small but significant consumer impacts of CPQI's limited press coverage suggests that limited use of media in the dissemination of report cards may be a significant factor behind low consumer awareness and use.

MiR-155 is reported as immune regulated miRNA in mammalian corresponding to immunity, antibacterial and antiviral effects regulation. However, the roles and mechanisms of the miRNA have remained largely undefined. We herein comprehensively investigated the functions of miR-155 in vitro and in vivo by miR-155 mimics, agomir and antagomir in Cyprinus carpio and Ictalurus punctatus, with the target genes in the SOSC1 pathway certified in I. punctatus via luciferase reporter assays. Results showed that the miR-155 regulated the expressions of cytokines, including TNF-α, IFN-γ, IL-1ß, IL-6 and IL-10. Further research confirmed SOSC1 as one of the targets of the miRNA, and the JAK1/STAT3/SOSC1 signal pathway involved in the miR-155 effects on the expression of immune cytokines as well. Additionally, the changes of TLR2 in fish may also be related to miR-155 along with its target SOCS1, and the TLR2/MyD88 pathway may partly participate in the effects of the miR-155 on the cytokines. The research here confirmed that the miR-155 can regulate cytokines expression by SOSC1 signal pathways of fish in vitro and in vivo, which would provide resources for understanding and studying about immune regulation in fish.

BACKGROUND: Numerous studies have assessed the association between xeroderma pigmentosum complementation group C (XPC) polymorphisms and susceptibility of prostate cancer (PCa); however, the findings remain inconsistent. METHODS: We performed an updated analysis utilizing data from electronic databases to obtain a more accurate estimation of the relationship between XPC rs2228001 A/C polymorphism and PCa risk. We further used in silico tools to investigate this correlation. RESULTS: Totally, 5,305 PCa cases and 6,499 control subjects were evaluated. When all studies pooled together, we detected no positive result (recessive genetic model: OR = 1.14, 95% CI = 0.93-1.40, Pheterogeneity  = 0.001, P = .212); nevertheless, the XPC rs2228001 A/C variant was associated with PCa risk in Asian descendants in the subgroup analysis (OR = 1.21, 95% CI = 1.01-1.43, Pheterogeneity  = 0.008, P = .034). In silico tools showed that more than 20 proteins can participate in the protein crosstalk with XPC. The expression of XPC was down-regulated in all Gleason scores of prostate cancer. CONCLUSIONS: The present study indicated that the XPC rs2228001 A/C variant may be associated with elevated PCa risk in Asian patients.

BACKGROUND: Computerized provider order entry (CPOE) can help providers deliver better quality care. We aimed to understand recent trends in use of CPOE by health system-affiliated ambulatory clinics. METHODS: We analyzed longitudinal data (2014-2016) for 19,109 ambulatory clinics that participated in all 3 years of the Healthcare Information and Management Systems Society Analytics survey to assess use of CPOE and identify characteristics of clinics associated with CPOE use. We calculated descriptive statistics to examine overall trends in use, location of order entry (bedside vs. clinical station), and system-level use CPOE across all clinics. We used linear probability models to explore the association between clinic characteristics (practice size, practice type, and health system type) and two outcomes of interest: CPOE use at any point between 2014 and 2016, and CPOE use beginning in 2015 or 2016. RESULTS: Between 2014 and 2016, use of CPOE increased more than 9 percentage points from 58 to 67%. Larger clinics and those affiliated with multi-hospital health systems were more likely to have reported use of CPOE. We found no difference in CPOE use by primary care versus specialty care clinics. When used, most clinics reported using CPOE for most or all of their orders. Health systems that used CPOE usually did so for all system-affiliated clinics. CONCLUSIONS: Small practice size or not being part of a multi-hospital system are associated with lower use of CPOE between 2014 and 2016. Less than optimal use in these environments may be harming patient outcomes.

The brittleness of oxide glasses has dramatically restricted their practical applications as structural materials despite very high theoretical strength. Herein, using molecular dynamics simulations, we show that silica glass prepared by consolidating glassy nanoparticles exhibit remarkable tensile ductility. Because of dangling bonds at surfaces and high contact stresses, the pressure applied for consolidating glassy nanoparticles to achieve ductility is significantly lower than that required to toughen bulk glass via permanent densification. We have identified 5-fold silicon, with a higher propensity to carry out local shear deformation than 4-fold silicon, as the structural origin for the observed tensile ductility. Interestingly, the work hardening effect has been, for the first time, observed in thus-prepared silica glass, with its strength increasing from 4 GPa to ∼7 GPa upon cold work. This is due to stress-assisted relaxation of 5-fold silicon to 4-fold during cold work, analogous to transformation hardening.

BACKGROUND: Ara h 1 is a major food allergen in peanuts. Recently, many studies have revealed that the Maillard reaction (MR) affects the allergenicity of food proteins. RESULTS: To investigate the influence of the MR on the allergenicity of Ara h 1, R-Ara h 1 was processed with glucose in dry heating conditions for different periods. The extent of the MR was assessed by four methods. The changes in secondary and tertiary structures were characterized through spectroscopy assays. Advanced glycation end products (AGE) structures were identified by protein sample dry heating for 60 min, indicating the formation of AGE-Ara h 1. Simulated gastric fluid (SGF) digestion analysis showed that AGE-Ara h 1 has higher resistance to peptic digestion than R-Ara h 1. The BALB/c mouse model was also utilized to explore the effect of the MR on the allergenicity of Ara h 1, and the results showed that the Th2-type cytokines, antibodies, and histamine content increased, and there was a greater degree of degranulation of rat basophilic leukemia (RBL) cells in the AGE-Ara h 1 group compared with the R-Ara h 1 group. CONCLUSION: During the process of dry heating, proteins participated in the MR with changes in secondary and tertiary structures. The condition applying a temperature of 100 °C for 60 min caused the formation of AGE-Ara h 1. Simulated gastric fluid digestion analysis showed that AGE-Ara h 1 had a greater resistance to peptic digestion than R-Ara h 1. The BALB/c mouse model showed that AGE-Ara h 1 had more allergenicity, indicating that the MR could enhance the allergenicity of Ara h 1. © 2020 Society of Chemical Industry.

OBJECTIVE: The main purpose of this study was to estimate the tax revenue lost by state and federal governments as a result of adverse labor market outcomes attributable to opioid misuse. METHODS: We pair existing, plausibly causal estimates of the effect of opioid misuse on the decline in the labor force from 2000 to 2016 with a variety of data sources to compute tax revenues lost by state and federal governments using the online TAXSIM calculator. RESULTS: We find that between 2000 and 2016, opioid misuse cost state governments $11.8 billion, including $1.7 billion in lost sales tax revenue and $10.1 billion in lost income tax revenue. In addition, the federal government lost $26.0 billion in income tax revenue. CONCLUSIONS: By omitting lost tax revenue due to labor force exits, prior studies have missed an important component of opioid-related costs borne by state and federal governments. POLICY IMPLICATIONS: As more states and the federal government contemplate litigation for opioid-related damages, lost tax revenue represents an important cost that could be recouped and allocated to opioid prevention and treatment programs.

BACKGROUND: Peanut allergy is one of the most common food allergies worldwide. Studies have shown that the incidence of peanut allergies in Western-born Asians is higher than that in Asia-born Asians. Notably, Europeans and Americans mostly eat roasted peanuts, whereas Asians mostly eat boiled or fried peanuts. RESULTS: BALB/c mice were sensitized using purified protein from raw, roasted or boiled peanuts, then fed the same by oral gavage. The relevant allergic reactions were studied using BALB/c mice model, including a rat basophilic leukemia (RBL) cell model, simulated gastric fluid experiments, and ultraviolet (UV) and circular dichroism (CD) spectral analysis. Serological studies showed increased levels of immunoglobulin E, interleukin-4 and interleukin-5, and pathological studies showed mast cell degranulation and inflammatory changes in jejunal tissues, with an increase in thymic stromal lymphopoietin (TSLP) gene expression in all treatment groups compared with the control group (phosphate-buffered saline). Compared with the raw peanut group, sera from the roasted peanut group produced a significant increase in RBL ß-hexosaminidase A release in vitro, and roasted peanuts showed increased resistance to digestion in simulated gastric fluid experiments. Ultraviolet and CD spectral analyses showed that the roasting and boiling processes altered the structure of the major peanut allergens, which may have contributed to the differences observed in peanut allergenicity. CONCLUSION: Our findings indicate that peanut allergies are related to peanut thermal processing methods. In our mouse model, the raw, roasted and boiled peanuts elicited different degrees of allergic response. Compared with raw peanut, roasted peanuts show a higher allergenicity, whereas the boiled peanuts show a lower allergenicity. © 2018 Society of Chemical Industry.

There is growing interest in the use of intersectoral collaboration (e.g., alliances, coalitions, partnerships) to address complex, health-related issues in local communities. Relatively little empirical research, however, has examined how to foster and sustain collaboration across sectors during later stages of development, despite a recognition that the needs and goals for collaboration may change over time. The purpose of this study was to address this gap by examining the perceptions of alliance participants regarding the importance of collaborating with different industry sectors as alliances transitioned from stable, prescriptive foundation support to a more uncertain future. Our findings suggest that, in addition to the contextual characteristics highlighted in previous research, the perceived importance of intersectoral collaboration varies for different types of alliances and participants. Moreover, the salience of these characteristics varied for different types of collaboration, in our case, collaboration with nonmedical health care sectors and nonhealth care sectors. Collectively, our findings point to the importance of thinking more comprehensively, across multiple levels of influence, when considering ways to foster or sustain intersectoral collaboration.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the efficiency and safety of transurethral holmium laser enucleation of the prostate (HoLEP) in the treatment of BPH in patients with a history of transrectal prostate biopsy (TRPB). METHODS: We retrospectively analyzed the clinical data on 102 cases of BPH treated by HoLEP in our hospital between November 2015 and May 2017, of which 42 had received TRPB prior to HoLEP (the PB group) but not the other 60 (the non-TRPB ï¼»NPBï¼½ group). We compared the preoperative, perioperative and postoperative follow-up data between the two groups of patients. RESULTS: There were no statistically significant differences in the mean age, prostate volume, and preoperative post-void residual urine volume (PVR), IPSS, quality of life (QOL) score and maximum urinary flow rate (Qmax) between the two groups of patients. The preoperative PSA level was significantly higher in the PB than in the NPB group (ï¼»10.30 ± 3.62ï¼½ vs ï¼»2.62 ± 1.75ï¼½ µg/L, P < 0.01), and the operation time markedly longer in the former than in the latter (ï¼»78.00 ± 18.25ï¼½ vs ï¼»67.93 ± 15.89ï¼½ min, P < 0.01), particularly in the patients with an interval of <2 weeks between HoLEP and TRPB than in those with an interval of ≥2 weeks (ï¼»91.17 ± 16.51ï¼½ vs ï¼»68.13 ± 12.45ï¼½ min, P < 0.01). Statistically significant differences were not found in the postoperative hemoglobin level, continuous bladder irrigation duration, catheter-indwelling time and hospital stay, nor in the incidence rate of transient urinary incontinence between the PB and NPB groups (47.62% vs 45%, P = 0.794). There were no transurethral resection syndrome, bladder or rectal injury, or blood transfusion in either group, nor statistically significant differences in PVR, Qmax, IPSS and QOL score between the two groups of patients at 3, 6 or 12 months after operation. CONCLUSIONS: HoLEP is a safe and effective surgical treatment of BPH for patients with a history of TRPB, which can reduce the time and increase the safety of operation when performed at ≥2 weeks after TRPB.

BACKGROUND: Increased prostatic smooth muscle tone and hyperplastic growth contribute to urethral obstruction and voiding symptoms in benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH). It has been suggested that different proliferative potential of stromal cells between transition zone (TZ) and adjoining regions of the prostate plays a significant role in the development of BPH. However, the molecular mechanisms of this hyperplastic process remain unclear. We found tumor necrosis factor receptor-associated factor 6 (TRAF6) highly expressed in TZ stromal cells compared to peripheral zone (PZ) stromal cells by gene array analyzes. Therefore, we aim to study the potential mechanisms of stromal TRAF6 in promoting BPH progression. METHODS: Stromal cells obtained from BPH-derived primary cultures. The TRAF6-siRNA vector were constructed and transfected into cultured human BPH primary TZ stromal cells, and TRAF6-overexpressing vector were constructed and transfected into cultured human BPH primary PZ stromal cells. Stromal cells were recombined with BPH-1 cells then subcutaneously inoculated into the kidney capsule of male nude mice. Cell proliferation was evaluated by CCK-8 assay. Multiple proteins in the Akt/mTOR pathway were assessed using western blot. RESULTS: TRAF6 levels were increased in TZ stroma compared with PZ stroma of BPH. The in vitro cell culture and in vivo cell recombination revealed that selective downregulation of TRAF6 in TZ stromal cells led to suppression of the proliferation, while upregulation of TRAF6 in PZ stromal cells enhanced the proliferation. We found that the Phosphorylation and Ubiquitination of Akt as well as the Phosphorylation of mTOR, P70S6K were decreased when TRAF6 was downregulated in primary cultured TZ stromal cells of BPH. CONCLUSIONS: TRAF6 can promote the proliferation of stromal cells of BPH via Akt/mTOR signaling. Our results may make stromal TRAF6 responsible for zonal characteristic of BPH and as a promising therapeutic strategy for BPH treatment.
