RESUMEN
OBJECTIVE: To determine the relationship between vulvar non-neoplastic epithelial disorder and thymus-dependent lymphyocyte levels and lipid peroxidation. MATERIALS AND METHODS: the authors measured the levels of CD3+, CD4+, CD8+, CD16+ T cell, and the concentration of superoxide dismutase (SOD) and malondialdehyde (MDA) in the blood of 62 patients with vulvar non-neoplastic epithelial disorder. A control group consisted of 30 normal women from the present hospitals. RESULTS: The level of CD4+/CD8+ T-lymphocytes and SOD in the blood of the patients with vulvar non-neoplastic epithelial disorder was significantly lower than that in control subjects, but the level of MDA was higher as compared with normal women. CONCLUSION: There is increased immune activation and lipid peroxidation in patients with vulvar non-neoplastic epithelial disorder, which could contribute to destruction of vulvar tissue.

Levels of tropic hormones of the pituitary, glucocorticoids and male and female sex hormones were assayed in 17 cases of kraurosis and leukoplakia of the vulva prior to treatment. Most patients revealed an abnormally high androgen/estrogen ratio, elevated level of glucocorticoids and low concentrations of thyrotropic hormone, prolactin and T3. The above disturbances are closely related and interdependent.

A study was made into the functional status of hypophysis, adrenal cortex, ovaries, and thyroid gland in patients with kraurosis and leukoplakia vulvae. The above patients demonstrated profound disturbances in the system hypophysis-ovaries, that attest to the need for applying corrective therapies to treat the disturbed hormonal homeostasis.

Serum vitamin A and E concentrations were determined in six patients with vulvar epithelial carcinoma and in 25 patients with lichen sclerosus and atrophicus (LSA) of the vulva. No difference could be found in these levels between the two groups. LSA patients received oral etretinate for two months at least; improvement was observed in 93% of the patients. Etretinate therapy had no effect on the serum levels of vitamins A or E.

This paper intend to introduce the therapeutic method of combining TCM and WM as well as the laboratory study to 91 patients with malnourished vulvae. The results showed that the concentration of the luteinizing hormone (LH) in the patients' serum was evidently lower than that in the control group (P less than 0.01). The concentration of follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) was evidently higher than that of the control group (P less than 0.01). The serum LH of the patients in cured group tended to be higher, and approximated to normal level (P greater than 0.05); the concentration of FSH got lower, and reached to normal level (P less than 0.05). The estradiol (E2) levels in the serum during the ovulation period and follicular period were obviously lower than that in the control group (P less than 0.01; P less than 0.05). The progesterone (P) level during the ovulation period was lower than that in the control group (P less than 0.05). The kraurosis index of the cast-off cells from the labium minus of the vagina in the test group was lower than that in the control group, but it was obviously higher in the cured group, and approximated to normal control group.
