Oxygen free-radical reperfusion products play a critical role in postischemic tissues injury. In this study we used deferoxamine, an iron ligand that seems to inhibit hydroxyl radicals production, in renal normothermic acute ischemia in the rat. Our results demonstrated a significant protective effect of deferoxamine on kidneys subjected to normothermic acute ischemia.

A case of hypertensive endoventricular pneumocephalus associated with rhinoliquorrea raised after about 2 years from the application of ventriculo-peritoneal shunt for hydrocephalus by stenosis of aqueduct is presented. The causes of such complication and diagnostic possibilities to point out the fistula by CT and ventricular cisternography are to talk over. Even the indication of external CSF drainage or to the repairing treatment will be discussed. Finally, literature is reviewed.

Renal angiomyolipoma is a benign tumor that can be observed in two distinct types: the solitary type and the tuberous sclerosis associated type. It is now diagnosed, even if asymptomatic, with increasing frequency by means of ultrasonography and computerized tomography owing to its particular features. The possibility of preoperative diagnosis and the biological characteristics of this benign lesion should induce a more conservative management.

The authors report their own experience on the efficacy of a short term antimicrobial prophylaxis involving a long-acting cephalosporin, ceftriaxone (Rocefin), in surgical patients. A study was carried out to evaluate the efficacy of a single dose of 1 or 2 g by i.v. administered 1 h. before elective surgery. 100 patients were admitted to study. Therapeutic success was achieved in 92 cases (92%).

The authors describe their experience in the surgical treatment of acute cervical fracture-dislocation by reporting the results obtained after the observation and follow-up examination of 53 cases. The surgical procedure adopted, after realignment of bone segments was obtained, depended on type of fracture. Posterior fixation with wire or wire and acrylic was performed in 31 cases. The anterior route was chosen in 19 cases, performing a ventral subtotal resection of the vertebral body with the use of acrylic. Three patients were treated by both procedures (anterior plus posterior approach). The authors describe the surgical technique and recommend the rapid mobilization of the patient, so as to avoid complications which could impede his recovery.
