RESUMO

The increase in popularity of point-cloud-oriented applications has triggered the development of specialized compression algorithms. In this paper, a novel algorithm is developed for the lossless geometry compression of voxelized point clouds following an intra-frame design. The encoded voxels are arranged into runs and are encoded through a single-pass application directly on the voxel domain. This is done without representing the point cloud via an octree nor rendering the voxel space through an occupancy matrix, therefore decreasing the memory requirements of the method. Each run is compressed using a context-adaptive arithmetic encoder yielding state-of-the-art compression results, with gains of up to 15% over TMC13, MPEG's standard for point cloud geometry compression. Several proposed contributions accelerate the calculations of each run's probability limits prior to arithmetic encoding. As a result, the encoder attains a low computational complexity described by a linear relation to the number of occupied voxels leading to an average speedup of 1.8 over TMC13 in encoding speeds. Various experiments are conducted assessing the proposed algorithm's state-of-the-art performance in terms of compression ratio and encoding speeds.

OBJECTIVES: The congenital lung malformation volume ratio (CVR) is a prenatal ultrasound measurement that parameterizes congenital lung malformation (CLM) size. The aims of this study were to use serial measurements to create estimated growth curves of fetal CVR for asymptomatic and symptomatic neonates with CLM and to investigate whether a discriminant prognostic model based on these measurements could predict accurately which fetuses with CLM will require invasive respiratory support at delivery and should therefore be delivered at a tertiary-care facility. METHODS: This was a retrospective study of fetuses diagnosed prenatally with CLM at three tertiary-care children's hospitals between 2009 and 2016. Those with two or more sonographic measurements of CVR were included. Serial fetal CVR measurements were used to create estimated growth curves for neonates with and those without respiratory symptoms at delivery, defined as requiring invasive respiratory support for the first 24 h after delivery. A discriminant model based on serial CVR measurements was used to calculate the dynamic probability of the need for invasive respiratory support. The performance of this model overall and in preterm and term neonates was compared with those using maximum CVR thresholds of 1.0 and 1.6. RESULTS: Of the 147 neonates meeting the inclusion criteria, 16 (10.9%) required postnatal invasive respiratory support. The estimated CVR growth curve models showed different growth trajectories for asymptomatic and symptomatic neonates, with significantly higher CVR in symptomatic neonates, and values peaking late in the second trimester at around 25 weeks' gestation in asymptomatic neonates. All prognostic methods had high accuracy for the prediction of the need for invasive respiratory support in term neonates, but the discriminant model had the best performance overall (area under the receiver-operating characteristics curve (AUC) = 0.88) and in the preterm population (AUC = 0.85). CONCLUSIONS: The estimated CVR growth curves showed different growth patterns in asymptomatic and symptomatic neonates with CLM. The dynamic discriminant model performed well overall and particularly in neonates that were carried to term. Development of an externally validated clinical tool based on this analysis could be useful in determining the site of delivery for fetuses with CLM. Copyright © 2019 ISUOG. ß1,4-Galactosylation of plant N-glycans is a prerequisite for commercial production of certain biopharmaceuticals in plants. Two different types of galactosylated N-glycans have initially been reported in plants as the result of expression of human ß1,4-galactosyltransferase 1 (GalT). Here we show that these differences are associated with differences at its N-terminus: the natural short variant of human GalT results in hybrid type N-glycans, whereas the long form generates bi-antennary complex type N-glycans. Furthermore, expression of non-mammalian, chicken and zebrafish GalT homologues with N-termini resembling the short human GalT N-terminus also induce hybrid type N-glycans. Providing both non-mammalian GalTs with a 13 amino acid N-terminal extension that distinguishes the two naturally occurring forms of human GalT, acted to increase the levels of bi-antennary galactosylated N-glycans when expressed in tobacco leaves. Replacement of the cytosolic tail and transmembrane domain of chicken and zebrafish GalTs with the corresponding region of rat α2,6-sialyltransferase yielded a gene whose expression enhanced the level of bi-antennary galactosylation even further.

Accurate estimation of joint loads implies using subject-specific musculoskeletal models. Moreover, as the lines of action of the muscles are dictated by the soft tissues, which are in turn influenced by gravitational forces, we developed a method to build subject-specific models of the lower limb in a functional standing position. Bones and skin envelope were obtained in a standing position, whereas muscles and a set of bony landmarks were obtained from conventional magnetic resonance images in a lying position. These muscles were merged with the subject-specific skeletal model using a nonlinear transformation, taking into account soft tissue movements and gravitational effects. Seven asymptomatic lower limbs were modelled using this method, and results showed realistic deformations. Comparing the subject-specific skeletal model to a scaled reference model rendered differences in terms of muscle length up to 4% and in terms of moment arm for adductor muscles up to 30%. These preliminary findings enlightened the importance of subject-specific modelling in a functional position.

Arsenic is a commonly occurring toxic metal in natural systems and is the root cause of many diseases and disorders. Occurrence of arsenic contaminated water is reported from several countries all over the world. A great deal of research over recent decades has been motivated by the requirement to lower the concentration of arsenic in drinking water and the need to develop low cost techniques which can be widely applied for arsenic removal from contaminated water. This review briefly presents iron and aluminium based adsorbents for arsenic removal. Studies carried out on oxidation of arsenic(III) to arsenic(V) employing various oxidising agents to facilitate arsenic removal are briefly mentioned. Effects of competing ions, As:Fe ratios, arsenic(V) vs. arsenic(III) removal using ferrihydrite as the adsorbent have been discussed. Recent efforts made for investigating arsenic adsorption on iron hydroxides/oxyhydroxides/oxides such as granular ferric hydroxide, goethite, akaganeite, magnetite and haematite have been reviewed. The adsorption behaviours of activated alumina, gibbsite, bauxite, activated bauxite, layered double hydroxides are discussed. Point-of-use adsorptive remediation methods indicate that Sono Arsenic filter and Kanchan™ Arsenic filter are in operation at various locations of Bangladesh and Nepal. The relative merits and demerits of such filters have been discussed. Evaluation of kits used for at-site arsenic estimation by various researchers also forms a part of this review.

Biotinylated analogues of gangliosides GM2, GM1, GD1a and GalNAc-GD1a were synthesized in high yields using glycosyltransferases from Campylobacter jejuni. The presence of a biotin moiety in the aglycone part of these mimics allows for attachment of these materials onto various streptavidin-coated surfaces. Analysis of the interaction of biotin-appended GM1 with the B subunit of Escherichia coli heat-labile enterotoxin performed in a modified ELISA procedure shows the potential of this compound to replace the natural GM1 in toxin detection.

RESUMO

Writing and publishing papers in radiology journals are mandatory for academic promotion and also contribute to the education of radiological community. The redaction of a scientific radiology paper is based on strict criteria that are also used by reviewers from the editorial board. In this article, the different steps in the construction and redaction of a radiology paper will be reviewed. Based on the collective experience of the authors, it is aimed at helping radiologists who wish to publish by increasing the likelihood of having their papers accepted by reviewers.

Insects harbour a wild diversity of symbionts that can spread and persist within populations by providing benefits to their host. The pea aphid Acyrthosiphon pisum maintains a facultative symbiosis with the bacterium Hamiltonella defensa, which provides enhanced resistance against the aphid parasitoid Aphidius ervi. Although the mechanisms associated with this symbiotic-mediated protection have been investigated thoroughly, little is known about its evolutionary effects on parasitoid populations. We used an experimental evolution procedure in which parasitoids were exposed either to highly resistant aphids harbouring the symbiont or to low innate resistant hosts free of H. defensa. Parasitoids exposed to H. defensa gained virulence over time, reaching the same parasitism rate as those exposed to low aphid innate resistance only. A fitness reduction was associated with this adaptation as the size of parasitoids exposed to H. defensa decreased through generations. This study highlighted the considerable role of symbionts in host-parasite co-evolutionary dynamics.

Bethlem myopathy and Ullrich congenital muscular dystrophy are part of the heterogeneous group of collagen VI-related muscle disorders. They are caused by mutations in collagen VI (ColVI) genes (COL6A1, COL6A2, and COL6A3) while LMNA mutations cause autosomal dominant Emery-Dreifuss muscular dystrophy. A muscular dystrophy pattern and contractures are found in all three conditions, making differential diagnosis difficult especially in young patients when cardiomyopathy is absent. We retrospectively assessed upper and lower limb muscle CT scans in 14 Bethlem/Ullrich patients and 13 Emery-Dreifuss patients with identified mutations. CT was able to differentiate Emery-Dreifuss muscular dystrophy from ColVI-related myopathies in selected thigh muscles and to a lesser extent calves muscles: rectus femoris fatty infiltration was selectively present in Bethlem/Ullrich patients while posterior thigh muscles infiltration was more prominently found in Emery-Dreifuss patients. A more severe fatty infiltration particularly in the leg posterior compartment was found in the Emery-Dreifuss group.

Fluoride in drinking water has a profound effect on teeth and bones. Up to a small level (1-1.5mg/L) this strengthens the enamel. Concentrations in the range of 1.5-4 mg/L result in dental fluorosis whereas with prolonged exposure at still higher fluoride concentrations (4-10mg/L) dental fluorosis progresses to skeletal fluorosis. High fluoride concentrations in groundwater, up to more than 30 mg/L, occur widely, in many parts of the world. This review article is aimed at providing precise information on efforts made by various researchers in the field of fluoride removal for drinking water. The fluoride removal has been broadly divided in two sections dealing with membrane and adsorption techniques. Under the membrane techniques reverse osmosis, nanofiltration, dialysis and electro-dialysis have been discussed. Adsorption, which is a conventional technique, deals with adsorbents such as: alumina/aluminium based materials, clays and soils, calcium based minerals, synthetic compounds and carbon based materials. Studies on fluoride removal from aqueous solutions using various reversed zeolites, modified zeolites and ion exchange resins based on cross-linked polystyrene are reviewed. During the last few years, layered double oxides have been of interest as adsorbents for fluoride removal. Such recent developments have been briefly discussed.

Glycoproteins from tobacco line xFxG1, in which expression of a hybrid beta-(1-->4)-galactosyltransferase (GalT) and a hybrid alpha-(1-->3)-fucosyltransferase IXa (FUT9a) is combined, contained an abundance of hybrid N-glycans with Lewis X (Le(X)) epitopes. A comparison with N-glycan profiles from plants expressing only the hybrid beta-(1-->4)-galactosyltransferase suggested that the fucosylation of the LacNAc residues in line xFxG1 protected galactosylated N-glycans from endogenous plant beta-galactosidase activity.

The masticator space is a deep facial space with a complex anatomical structure. The purpose of the present study was to precisely define the masticator space to eliminate the use of obsolete and confusing terms to describe the area, and to illustrate the common mass syndromes. Primary tumors are uncommon, usually benign and of a vascular or neural origin. Adjacent lesions, mainly pharyngeal with secondary extension into the masticator space, are especially frequent. Metastases are rare, and infectious pathology is often odontogenic. The most frequent lesion of the masticator space is the odontogenic abscess. Multidetector CT and MRI enable precise study of the space, its communications with other deep spaces and the etiology of any mass syndrome. Understanding the anatomy of the masticator space and how it links up with the other deep facial spaces helps the radiologist to recognize the different lesions of this space and to avoid unnecessary surgery, or any other less than optimal management.

Undec-10-enyl, undec-10-ynyl and 11-azidoundecyl glycoside analogues corresponding to the oligosaccharides of human gangliosides GM3, GM2 and GM1 were synthesized in high yields using glycosyltransferases from Campylobacter jejuni. Due to poor water solubility of the substrates, the reactions were carried out in methanol-water media, which for the first time were shown to be compatible with the C. jejuni alpha-(2-->3)-sialyltransferase (CST-06) and beta-(1-->4)-N-acetylgalactosaminyltransferase (CJL-30). Bioequivalence of our synthetic analogues and natural gangliosides was examined by binding to Vibrio cholerae toxin and to the B subunit of Escherichia coli heat-labile enterotoxin. This bioequivalence was confirmed by binding mouse and human monoclonal antibodies to GM1 and acute phase sera containing IgM and IgG antibodies to GM1 from patients with the immune-mediated polyneuropathy Guillain-Barré syndrome. The synthesized compounds were analyzed by 1D and 2D 900 MHz NMR spectroscopy. TOCSY and DQF-COSY experiments in combination with 13C-1H correlation measurements (HSQC, HMBC) were carried out for primary structural characterization, and a complete assignment of all 1H and 13C chemical shifts is presented.

In this study, we show that introduction of human N-acetylglucosaminyltransferase (GnT)-III gene into tobacco plants leads to highly efficient synthesis of bisected N-glycans. Enzymatically released N-glycans from leaf glycoproteins of wild-type and transgenic GnT-III plants were profiled by matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization time-of-flight mass spectrometry (MALDI-TOF-MS) in native form. After labeling with 2-aminobenzamide, profiling was performed using normal-phase high-performance liquid chromatography with fluorescence detection, and glycans were structurally characterized by MALDI-TOF/TOF-MS and reverse-phase nano-liquid chromatography-MS/MS. These analyses revealed that most of the complex-type N-glycans in the plants expressing GnT-III were bisected and carried at least two terminal N-acetylglucosamine (GlcNAc) residues in contrast to wild-type plants, where a considerable proportion of N-glycans did not contain GlcNAc residues at the nonreducing end. Moreover, we have shown that the majority of N-glycans of an antibody produced in a plant expressing GnT-III is also bisected. This might improve the efficacy of therapeutic antibodies produced in this type of transgenic plant.

N-glycosylation of a mAb may have a major impact on its therapeutic merits. Here, we demonstrate that expression of a hybrid enzyme (called xylGalT), consisting of the N-terminal domain of Arabidopsis thaliana xylosyltransferase and the catalytic domain of human beta-1,4-galactosyltransferase I (GalT), in tobacco causes a sharp reduction of N-glycans with potentially immunogenic core-bound xylose (Xyl) and fucose (Fuc) residues as shown by Western blot and MALDI-TOF MS analysis. A radioallergosorbent test inhibition assay with proteins purified from leaves of WT and these transgenic tobacco plants using sera from allergic patients suggests a significant reduction of potential immunogenicity of xylGalT proteins. A mAb purified from leaves of plants expressing xylGalT displayed an N-glycan profile that featured high levels of galactose, undetectable xylose, and a trace of fucose. Hence, a transgenic plant expressing the hybrid GalT might yield more effective and safer monoclonals for therapeutic purposes than WT plants and even transgenic plants expressing the unchanged GalT.

Iatrogenic drug disorders should be considered when presented with a number of imaging findings mainly involving the nervous, musculoskeletal, gastrointestinal or genitourinary system. Care should be used when differentiating between imaging findings related to the underlying pathology and imaging findings related to drug-related complications: examples include the impact of steroid therapy on bones and the impact of triple-drug anti-HIV therapy and its impact of fatty tissue. Knowledge of the necessary imaging surveillance protocol is implied.

OBJECTIVE: To compare familial inflammatory inclusion body myositis (IBM) with hereditary inclusion body myopathies and sporadic IBM. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Clinical, biological, MRI, and histological data were analysed in two siblings with inflammatory IBM and compared with those of patients with sporadic and hereditary IBM. RESULTS: Both patients had a clinical phenotype of sporadic IBM, which differs from hereditary myopathies because of late age of onset--respectively 65 and 66 years, and different pattern of muscular involvement--asymmetric, mainly distal but also involving quadriceps. MRI showed selective fatty infiltration and oedema in the extensor compartment of thigh muscles. The diagnosis of IBM was confirmed by muscle biopsy, showing muscle fibres containing numerous rimmed vacuoles, a characteristic shared by all types of IBM. In contrast with hereditary IBM, histological analysis also showed inflammatory mononuclear infiltrate invading non-necrotic fibres, ragged red and oxidase c negative fibres, and positive Congo red staining. Moreover, HLA class II typing disclosed DR beta 1 0301 haplotype, which is significantly related to sporadic but not to hereditary IBM. With steroid treatment and monthly intravenous immunoglobulins, the disease was stabilised in both patients at protracted follow up. CONCLUSION: Sporadic and familial inflammatory IBM share the same clinical, biological, MRI, and histological features.

OBJECTIVES: To determine the range of normal radiographic joint space width (JSW) values and the shape of the normal hip, and the influence of age, sex, dysplasia, coxa profunda, and acetabular roof curve abnormalities on these values. METHODS: On routine conventional pelvic radiographs taken in the supine position in patients with no history of hip or lumbar pain, JSW was measured at three points (superolateral, apical, superomedial), together with the VCE, HTE, and neck shaft angles; acetabular depth; and femoral head diameter. RESULTS: 223 radiographs (446 hips) from 127 women and 96 men (mean age 51.3 years) were examined. Interindividual variations in JSW were large (apical site: 4.19 (0.92) mm; range 2-7). Mean JSW values were higher at the superolateral site than at the apical and superomedial sites in nearly 80% of cases. Women had lower JSW values than men. JSW values did not fall with age. Marked right/left JSW asymmetry was seen in 13/221 (5.9%) subjects. Eight cases of acetabular dysplasia (7 unilateral) and 16 cases of coxa profunda were found, but no cases of acetabular protrusion. The JSW was thicker in dysplastic hips, and thinner in hips with coxa profunda. A roof curve abnormality was found in 96/446 (21.5%) hips. CONCLUSIONS: Normal JSW values vary widely; the JSW is commonly narrower at the superomedial site than at the apical site, and is sometimes asymmetric. The roof curve is dysmorphic in about 20% of patients. These findings may have important implications for epidemiological studies and early diagnosis of osteoarthritis of the hip.

RESUMO

PURPOSE: Inflammatory myopathies include polymyositis (PM), dermatomyositis (DM) and inclusion body myositis (IBM) which differ in terms of clinical, immuno-histological presentations, evolution and treatment. Diagnosis is based on the muscular biopsy but histological distinction between PM and IBM can be difficult; biopsies can be insufficient as well as during follow-up to detect active areas within the muscle. CURRENT KNOWLEDGE AND KEY POINTS: Muscular MRI is an important tool both in the diagnosis and the follow-up of IMM in the following circumstances: Distinction between PM and IBM: fatty infiltration and involvement of the anterior group of the thighs are characteristic of IBM whereas isolated inflammation and involvement of the three thighs or posterior muscle groups are characteristic of PM. Biopsy guidance on the inflammatory lesions depicted on the STIR sequence either initially or after a non-conclusive biopsy. To differentiate, active disease from steroid myopathy. FUTURE PROSPECTS AND PROJECTS: Several multicentric trials are in development both in spectro and morphologic MRI to study hypoxic phenomenon in early course of IMM and muscular volume evaluation both in normal subjects, congenital or acquired myopathies.
