RESUMO

BACKGROUND: The purpose of this research was to stratify the level of frailty to examine the risk factors associated with reversible cognitive frailty (RCF) and potentially reversible cognitive frailty (PRCF) in nursing homes to provide a basis for hierarchical management in different stages of frailty. METHODS: The study was a cross-sectional study conducted from September to November 2022; 504 people were selected by stratified random sampling after convenience selection from the Home for the Aged Guangzhou. The structured questionnaire survey was conducted through face-to-face interviews using the general data questionnaire, Fried Frailty Phenotype, Montreal Cognitive Assessment Scale. RESULTS: In total, 452 individuals were included for analysis. A total of 229 cases (50.7%) were PRCF, 70 (15.5%) were RCF. Multivariate logistic regression analysis showed that in pre-frailty, the Geriatric Depression Scale (GDS-15) score (odds ratio (OR) 1.802; 95% CI 1.308-2.483), Instrumental Activities of Daily Living Scale (IADL) score (0.352; 0.135-0.918) and energy (0.288; 0.110-0.755) were influencing factors of RCF. GDS-15 score (1.805; 1.320-2.468), IADL score (0.268; 0.105-0.682), energy (0.377; 0.150-0.947), lack of intellectual activity (6.118; 1.067-35.070), admission time(>3 years) (9.969; 1.893-52.495) and low education (3.465; 1.211-9.912) were influencing factors of PRCF. However, RCF with frailty was associated with the Short-Form Mini-Nutritional Assessment (MNA-SF) score (0.301; 0.123-0.739) and low education time (0 ~ 12 years) (0.021; 0.001-0.826). PRCF with frailty was associated with age (1.327; 1.081-1.629) and weekly exercise time (0.987; 0.979-0.995). CONCLUSIONS: The prevalence of RCF and PRCF was high among pre-frail and frail older adults in nursing homes. Different levels of frailty had different influencing factors for RCF and PRCF. Depression, daily living ability, energy, intellectual activity, admission time, education level, nutrition status, age and exercise time were associated with RCF and PRCF. Hierarchical management and intervention should be implemented for different stages of frailty to prevent or delay the progression of cognitive frailty.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVES: We aimed to compare the effectiveness of interventions in cognitive function and frailty status and rank these interventions. METHODS: Data Sources-We searched PubMed, Embase, CINAHL, PsycINFO, Web of Science, Cochrane Library, Central Register of Controlled Trials (CENTRAL), CNKI, Wanfang, VIP and Google scholar. Data synthesis-The risk of bias was assessed using the Cochrane risk bias assessment tool. Statistical heterogeneity was assessed using the Chi-square test and quantified by I2 . The results were pooled using the standardized mean difference (SMD). The rank probability for each intervention was calculated using the surface under the cumulative ranking curve (SUCRA). Additionally, the quality of the evidence was evaluated using the GRADE approach. RESULTS: A total of 10 randomized controlled trials (RCTs) involving 1110 patients were included in our analysis. The network map of cognitive function comprised 9 RCTs with 1347 participants, examining eight different interventions. Nutritional support (SUCRA = 99.9%, SMD = 3.02, 95% CI: 2.53, 3.51) may be the most effective intervention to improve cognitive function. The network map of frailty (including 9 RCTs with 1017 participants and 9 interventions) suggested that multicomponent exercises (SUCRA = 96.4%, SMD = -5.10, 95% CI: -5.96, -4.23) tended to have a greater effect. CONCLUSIONS: Community-based multicomponent exercises have shown significant benefits for improving cognitive function and frailty status in older adults, with moderate certainty. For hospitalized older patients with Cognitive frailty (CF), current evidence suggests that nutritional support yields the most improvement. Additionally, aerobic exercise and dual-task training have proven effective in managing CF. Further studies are needed to validate these preliminary findings and exploring more accessible and effective physical and cognitive interventions to prevent CF in aging.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Potato, Solanum tuberosum, is one of the most important food crops in the world, playing a significant role in global food security. However, many potato industries and farms may suffer losses of tuber yield and quality in storage due to lepidopteran pests. Here, we evaluated the effectiveness of an ectoparasitic idiobiont mite Pyemotes zhonghuajia in the biological control of the potato tuber moth (PTM) Phthorimaea operculella by determining the lethal, sublethal (nonconsumptive) and transgenerational effects of P. zhonghuajia of various population densities and exposure durations on PTM survival, development and reproduction. RESULTS: Pyemotes zhonghuajia females were capable of killing all instar stages of PTM, while resistance to mite parasitism increased with the development of PTM life stage. The mortality of mature larvae (i.e., fourth instar) and pupae increased with increasing mite density and exposure duration. P. zhonghuajia imposed significant negative sublethal impacts on PTM pupation rate, female fecundity and adult longevity but not on immature development. The sublethal stress was transgenerational, resulting in lower reproduction in the offspring generation. CONCLUSION: P. zhonghuajia induces lethal, sublethal and transgenerational effects and significantly decreases PTM survival and reproductive out, demonstrating its high efficiency in the biological control of PTM. Our study provides insight into the mechanisms underlying the nonconsumptive effects of parasitism in an ectoparasite-host system and delivers critical information for the design and implementation of augmentative releases of P. zhonghuajia in the biological control of PTM in potato storage. © 2023 Society of Chemical Industry.

RESUMO

The degradation of AlGaN-based UVC LEDs under constant temperature and constant current stress for up to 500 hrs was analyzed in this work. During each degradation stage, the two-dimensional (2D) thermal distributions, I-V curves, optical powers, combining with focused ion beam and scanning electron microscope (FIB/SEM), were thoroughly tested and analyzed the properties and failure mechanisms of UVC LEDs. The results show that: 1) the opto-electrical characteristics measured before/during stress indicate that the increased leakage current and the generation of stress-induced defects increase the non-radiative recombination in the early stress stage, resulting in a decrease in optical power; 2) the increase of temperature caused by the deterioration of the Cr/Al layer of p-metal after 48 hrs of stress aggravates the optical power in UVC LEDs. The 2D thermal distribution in conjunction with FIB/SEM provide a fast and visual way to precisely locate and analyze the failure mechanisms of UVC LEDs.

RESUMO

Background: The study explored sources of meaning in older adults and the action path among family care, meaning in life, quality of life, and depression. Materials and methods: We investigated 627 older adults using the Sources of Meaning in Life Scale for the Elderly (SMSE), the Family Care Index (APGAR), the Center for Epidemiological Studies Depression Scale-10 (CES-D-10), and the EuroqOL-5 Dimensions (EQ-5D). Results: Scores categorized 454 older adults with good family function, 99 with moderate, and 47 with severe family dysfunction; 110 older adults had depression. The structural equation model showed that family care affected the quality of life and depression by influencing meaning, and depression had a significant negative effect on the quality of life (P < 0.05). The model was a good fit for the data (χ2/df = 3.300, SRMR = 0.0291, GFI = 0.975, IFI = 0.971, TLI = 0.952, CFI = 0.971, RMSEA = 0.062). Conclusion: Meaning in life is an intermediary factor that affects depression and quality of life in older adults. Family care had a significant positive impact on SMSE and a negative influence on depression. The SMSE effectively clarifies the sources of meaning in life and can be used to improve meaning and promote mental health in older adults.

RESUMO

The potato tuber moth, Phthorimaea operculella, is the most damaging potato pest in the world and is difficult to control as the larvae are internal feeders in the foliage and tubers. Entomopathogenic fungi that colonize plants as endophytes have lethal and sublethal pathological effects on insect pests. We show that Beauveria bassiana colonizes the aerial parts of potato plants endophytically after inoculation through soil drenching. Endophytic B. bassiana persisted in potato foliage for more than 50 days postinoculation. Bioassays indicated that foliage of B. bassiana-inoculated potato plants were pathogenic against larvae of P. operculella. Sublethal experiments indicated that B. bassiana negatively affected the growth, development, and reproduction of P. operculella. Development experiments showed that the weight of P. operculella pupae reared on B. bassiana-colonized potato plants (4.25 mg) was significantly less than that of those reared on uninoculated control plants (8.89 mg). Compared with newly eclosed larvae fed on control plants, those fed on B. bassiana-inoculated plants had significantly lower survivorship, with only 17.8% developing to the adult stage. Oviposition of P. operculella females reared on B. bassiana endophytically colonized plants was significantly lower (35 eggs/female) than of those reared on uninoculated plants (115 eggs/female). This study demonstrates that endophytic B. bassiana can be a potential biological control agent for the control and management of P. operculella. Comparing pupal weights of P. operculella reared on potato plants inoculated with the B. bassiana strain GZGY-1-3 and on untreated control plants, pupae from the control plants were significantly heavier than those from treated plants.

RESUMO

Bifunctional chiral 4-aryl-pyridine-N-oxides (ArPNO) were reported for the acylative kinetic resolution of 3-hydroxy-3-substituted oxindoles, where the oxygen acts as the nucleophilic site. Using less sterically hindered acetic anhydride, both the recovered tertiary heterocyclic alcohols and the ester products exhibited good to excellent results with s-factors up to 167. Control experiments supported the dual activation manner, where the N-oxide group and N-H proton in ArPNO were crucial for high selectivity and enhanced catalytic reactivity. Compared with the extensively used chiral NHC, isochalcogenourea, and DMAP catalysts, we found that chiral ArPNO were also efficient organocatalysts in the kinetic resolution of tertiary alcohols.

RESUMO

This study aimed to systematically review studies of the psychometric properties of the self-rated successful aging inventory (SAI). The literature was rigorously searched from July 2018 to February 2021 and relevant studies were selected and evaluated following the Consensus-based Standards for the selection of health Measurement Instruments guidelines. A total of 23 studies were included, in which 19 instruments were identified. Due to the quality of the studies, only preliminary conclusions could be drawn. Seven instruments were graded "A" and recommended for use based on the available psychometric evidence. The remaining 12 SAI instruments were graded "B" and more research is required before they can be recommended. Based on this review, seven different types of the SAI could be considered for use. To improve the quality of evidence, the SAI requires more rigorous research and precise reports. When using the SAI, it is important to consider cultural characteristics.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Flower thrips (Frankliniella intonsa, IFT) and west flower thrips (Frankliniella occidentalis, WFT) are often found together on the host plant in China. WFT is an important invasive species that seems to outcompete the native IFT. In order to clarify the interspecific competitions between the two thrips, this study measured the population development of IFT and WFT under sexual and parthenogenetic reproductive modes on two hosts (fresh lentil bean pods with/without honey and pepper plants at seedling/flowering stages) in the laboratory. RESULTS: When reared on fresh lentil bean pods (with/without honey), WFT population size was lower in mixed species populations compared to single species populations but the presence of WFT had nor negative effect on IFT population size. These results were dependent of the reproductive mode. When honey was supplied, the ratio of female-to-male in the progeny of WFT produced under sexual reproductive mode increased significantly in the presence of IFT. On pepper seedlings, mixed populations were more favorable to the population development of IFT at the seedling stage, but more favorable to WFT at the flowering stage. CONCLUSIONS: In the early stage of WFT invasion and colonization, the emergence of flowering and honey (nectar) sources may have a positive effect on the population development of WFT.

RESUMO

Stress-related growth (SRG) can be understood as stressful experiences that act as catalysts for positive life changes. Although less severe than typical 'trauma,' some daily obstacles may nevertheless derail faith and intentions, produce distress, result in a demand for reflection, and provide a possibility for SRG. This study examined the direct and indirect effects of event severity, social support, and optimism on SRG among emerging adults attending college in China. A convenience sample of 365 college students, ranging from 18 to 24 years old, completed surveys on event severity, social support, optimism, and SRG. We applied structural equation modeling and bootstrapping to explore optimism in the mediation model. Results demonstrated that event severity and social support have direct and indirect effects on SRG through a partial mediation effect of optimism. The results indicate that interventions targeting optimism might be an effective approach to improving SRG among college students in China.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVES: People who find meaning in life can endure 'any' pain. However, there were no tools to investigate elderly individuals' sources of meaning in life in China. This study aimed to develop the Sources of Meaning in Life Scale for the Elderly (SMSE), and examine the validation and reliability in Chinese elderly. METHODS: A 43-item pool of SMSE was formed by combining the preliminary interview and literature review. A cross-sectional survey of 627 elderly people was then conducted in two community health service centers, two hospitals, and two nursing homes in Guangzhou by the convenience sampling method. Test-retest reliability was assessed with 24 elderly persons. RESULTS: Six dimensions, containing family (four items), social support (four items), value (seven items), life security (four items), personal development (four items), and leisure activity (five items) explained 62.16% of the variance in total. Confirmatory factor analysis model fitting indices were χ2 = 694.652, df = 330, χ2/df = 2.105, SRMR = 0.0695, GFI = 0.853, IFI = 0.905, TLI = 0.889, CFI = 0.903, and RMSEA = 0.062. The Cronbach's alpha value of the scale was 0.924, while that of each dimension was between 0.727 and 0.870. The inter-class correlation (ICC) of the scale was 0.856. CONCLUSION: The SMSE has good reliability and validity that can be used to evaluate the sources of meaning and meaning in life for the elderly.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Riboflavin deficiency confers a predisposition for esophageal cancer. The role of plasma riboflavin levels in development and prognosis of individuals with digestive tract inflammation and ulcer (DTIU), digestive tract polyps (DTPs), and ESCC is not well understood. METHODS: We performed a cross-sectional study, including 177 DTIU, 80 DTP, and 324 ESCC cases, to measure the plasma riboflavin levels among the three populations. Correlation between plasma riboflavin levels (categorized as ≥31.8, 6.5-31.8 and ≤6.5 nmol/L groups) and clinical characteristics, as well as survival of ESCC patients (556 cases) was analyzed. RESULTS: There was no difference in plasma riboflavin levels between DTIU, DTP, and ESCC cases (P > 0.05). Plasma riboflavin levels were inversely correlated with invasive depth (correlation coefficient = -0.09, P = 0.026) and lymph node metastasis (correlation coefficient = -0.11, P = 0.010) of ESCC, and ESCC patients with low riboflavin levels had poor recurrence-free survival (P = 0.035) and overall survival (P = 0.003). Decreased riboflavin was a prognostic factor for poor overall survival (HR = 1.91, 95% CI = 1.19-3.07, P = 0.007). CONCLUSIONS: Plasma riboflavin levels in DTIU, DTP, and ESCC patients are similar. Plasma riboflavin levels are associated with the development and prognosis of ESCC.

RESUMO

Resistance to pyrethroid and organophosphate insecticides has been a growing problem in the management of cotton bollworm Helicoverpa armigera (Hübner) populations in the Yangtze River and Yellow River valleys of China, but resistance status and mechanisms of H. armigera populations from northeast China are less documented. In this study, a field strain collected from Shenyang in northeast China (SYR) is up to 16-fold more resistant than a susceptible strain (SS) to λ-cyhalothrin, while the resistance level to phoxim remained low (2.6-fold). Synergist tests and enzymatic assays show that increased cytochrome P450 monooxygenase (P450) activity is the main mechanism for λ-cyhalothrin resistance. Eight out of 10 genes from CYP6 and CYP9 subfamilies were significantly overexpressed in the SYR strain, and CYP6AE11 was the mostly overexpressed P450 (59-fold). These results suggest that overexpression of multiple P450 enzymes contributes to λ-cyhalothrin resistance in the SYR strain of H. armigera from northeast China.

RESUMO

Planthoppers (Nilaparvata lugens, Sogatella furcifera, and Laodelphax striatellus) (Hemiptera: Delphacidae) are the most important pests affecting rice production. Pesticide spraying for its control may cause harmful effects on human health and the environment, especially the loss of biodiversity. The consequences of these changes on biodiversity and ecological services are well studied in tropical irrigated paddy fields, but are largely unknown in subtropical areas. Organic regime provides an environment-friendly method for biodiversity conservation; however, it is unclear whether this regime can suppress planthopper populations effectively in paddy fields. Consequently, we compared species richness, abundance, community structure, and evenness of natural enemies and planthoppers between organic and conventional rice fields (n = 35) distributed across four sites in China. The results showed that species richness was higher in organic fields than in conventional fields. Shannon index and evenness of predators and parasitoids were higher in most of the organic fields than their conventional counterparts. Furthermore, planthopper density showed a significant negative relationship with increased richness and evenness for both predators and parasitoids. These results underscore the notion that management regimes influence biodiversity in rice field. Most importantly, this has direct implications on the efficacy of natural pest control services rendered by predators and parasitoids associated with planthoppers in China and potentially other rice production regions in Asia.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Diamondback moth, Plutella xylostella L., is a very important pest of cruciferous vegetables causing excessive economic losses worldwide. Bioactivities of halo-, diazo-, and cyclopropane acetates of P. xylostella sex pheromone have been evaluated using electrophysiology and enzyme inhibition assays. RESULTS: A total of 23 sex pheromone analogs of P. xylostella were designed and synthesized and the result shows that (11Z)-hexadec-11-en-1-yl 2,2,2-trifluoroacetate, (11Z)-hexadec-11-en-1-yl 2,2,3,3,3-pentafluoropropanoate, and (11Z)-hexadec-11-en-1-yl trifluoromethanesulfonate elicited potential inhibitory effects at all doses tested in the electrophysiology and enzyme inhibition assays. Interference of locating the sex pheromone source was found strongest when these three analogs were mixed with the sex pheromone at a 10:1 ratio. In addition, field test showed that the rate of mating disruption was over 90% when (11Z)-hexadec-11-en-1-yl 2,2,2-trifluoroacetate or (11Z)-hexadec-11-en-1-yl 2,2,3,3,3-pentafluoropropanoate was mixed with the sex pheromone at a 10:1 ratio. CONCLUSION: Two sex pheromone antagonists were screen out by electrophysiology, enzyme inhibition assays, wind tunnel and field tests. We believe that these antagonists could be used to establish a novel eco-friendly measure to control P. xylostella and provide evidence for clarifying the specific functions and molecular mechanisms of sex pheromone antagonists. © 2018 Society of Chemical Industry.

RESUMO

In this study, we examined the psychometric properties of the Chinese version of the Stress-Related Growth Scale-Short Form (SRGS-SF) for undergraduate nursing students. Using a cross-sectional design, a convenience sample of 253 undergraduate nursing students was included in this study. Half of the sample (n = 126) was randomly selected to explore the factorial structure of the SRGS-SF via exploratory factor analysis. The rest of the sample (n = 127) was selected to confirm the structure via confirmatory factor analysis. The results showed that the Chinese version of the SRGS-SF consisted of two factors: interpersonal and intrapersonal growth. The scale also had the power to discriminate between undergraduate nursing students with high and low levels of stress-related growth (SRG). The internal consistency and stability of the scale were also adequate. The Chinese version of the SRGS-SF is a valid and reliable measurement for assessing SRG among undergraduate nursing students. One suitable application would be the evaluation of the process underpinning SRG and the effectiveness of interventions.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: The Texas Revised Inventory of Grief-Present Scale (TRIG-Present) is a widely used tool to measure grief. Most existing research related to the assessment and characteristics of grief has been conducted sampling bereaved Western subjects and, as such, limited information is available on the experience of grief in Chinese samples. OBJECTIVE: This study aims to validate the Chinese version of the TRIG-Present (TRIG-Present-C) and explore the predictors of grief among bereaved adults in China. METHODS: Responses from 460 bereaved Chinese adults were collected through an online survey. Subjects completed a specially developed questionnaire covering demographic data/loss-related variables, the TRIG-Present-C, and Center for Epidemiologic Studies Depression Scale (CES-D-9). RESULTS: Confirmatory factor analysis validates the original one-factor structure. The overall content validity index is equal to 1.0. Significant correlations were observed, with CES-D-9 and factor subscales (r ranged from -0.228 to 0.607, p < 0.05) indicating the convergent validity. The TRIG-Present-C scores distinguished grieving individuals from those experiencing unanticipated death and those where death was anticipated. The internal consistency is satisfactory (Cronbach's α = 0.957). In multiple regression analyses, with grief severity as the dependent variable, 28.6% of the variance was explained by religious belief, the immediacy of the loss, the loss of a first-degree relative, and where the deceased was relatively young. CONCLUSIONS: The TRIG-Present-C scale is a reliable and valid instrument for assessing grief reaction among bereaved Chinese adults. Religious belief, loss of a first-degree relative, where the deceased was relatively young, and the immediacy of loss were associated with higher levels of grief.

RESUMO

Environmental temperature has a significant impact on insect behavior. The present study aimed to determine the effects of temperature on the development, survival, and reproduction of Thrips hawaiiensis (Thysanoptera: Thripidae), an important flower-inhabiting thrips. These effects were evaluated at five constant temperatures (18, 21, 24, 27, and 30°C) on thrips reared in the laboratory on excised Gardenia jasminoides flowers. The developmental durations of egg, first instar, second instar, prepupa, pupa, and the entire immature stages were shortened in response to a temperature increase from 18 to 30°C. The highest generational survival rate was at 27°C (75.00%), whereas the lowest was at 18°C (46.00%). The minimum threshold and effective accumulated temperatures for completing a generation of T. hawaiiensis were 7.62°C and 171.26 degree-days, respectively. The highest fecundity (95.80) was at 27°C, but it was not significantly different than at 24°C (84.72) or 30°C (84.32). The highest oviposition rate of 5.57 eggs per female per day occurred at 27°C, which was significantly higher than at any other temperature. Both the highest intrinsic rate of increase, at 0.200, and net reproduction rate, at 44.97, for T. hawaiiensis were observed at 27°C, whereas the lowest values of 0.114 and 25.56, respectively, were observed at 18°C. These results suggest that T. hawaiiensis is well adapted to temperate conditions, with an optimal temperature range for development of 24 to 30°C, with the most suitable temperature for both development and reproduction being 27°C.

RESUMO

The coffee bean weevil (CBW), Araecerus fasciculatus (De Geer, 1775), is a cosmopolitan stored-product pest, especially in tropical and subtropical areas. Previous reports showed evidence for aggregation behavior of CBW and this study aimed to identify and evaluate the aggregation pheromone of this pest. Whole-body solvent extractions were analyzed by coupled gas chromatography-mass spectrometry and comparison of male and female extracts showed a male-specific compound which was identified as squalene, 2,6,10,15,19,23-hexamethyl-2,6,10,14,18,22-tetracosahexaene. This compound was shown to attract male and female CBW in Y-tube olfactometer and storage trap assays. The longevity of septum lures was also evaluated in a warehouse. Squalene could be useful in monitoring and controlling this pest.
