RESUMO

Understanding the magnetic and ferroelectric ordering of magnetoelectric multiferroic materials at the nanoscale necessitates a versatile imaging method with high spatial resolution. Here, soft X-ray ptychography is employed to simultaneously image the ferroelectric and antiferromagnetic domains in an 80 nm thin freestanding film of the room-temperature multiferroic BiFeO3 (BFO). The antiferromagnetic spin cycloid of period 64 nm is resolved by reconstructing the corresponding resonant elastic X-ray scattering in real space and visualized together with mosaic-like ferroelectric domains in a linear dichroic contrast image at the Fe L3 edge. The measurements reveal a near perfect coupling between the antiferromagnetic and ferroelectric ordering by which the propagation direction of the spin cycloid is locked orthogonally to the ferroelectric polarization. In addition, the study evinces both a preference for in-plane propagation of the spin cycloid and changes of the ferroelectric polarization by 71° between multiferroic domains in the epitaxial strain-free, freestanding BFO film. The results provide a direct visualization of the strong magnetoelectric coupling in BFO and of its fine multiferroic domain structure, emphasizing the potential of ptychographic imaging for the study of multiferroics and non-collinear magnetic materials with soft X-rays.

RESUMO

We report on (resonant) x-ray diffraction experiments on the normal state properties of kagome-lattice superconductors KV3Sb5and RbV3Sb5. We have confirmed previous reports indicating that the charge density wave (CDW) phase is characterized by a doubling of the unit cell in all three crystallographic directions. By monitoring the temperature dependence of Bragg peaks associated with the CDW phase, we ascertained that it develops gradually over several degrees, as opposed to CsV3Sb5, where the CDW peak intensity saturates promptly just below the CDW transition temperature. Analysis of symmetry modes indicates that this behavior arises due to lattice distortions linked to the formation of CDWs. These distortions occur abruptly in CsV3Sb5, while they progress more gradually in RbV3Sb5and KV3Sb5. In contrast, the amplitude of the mode leading to the crystallographic symmetry breaking fromP6/mmmtoFmmmappears to develop more gradually in CsV3Sb5as well. Diffraction measurements close to the V K edge and the Sb L1edge show no sensitivity to inversion- or time-symmetry breaking, which are claimed to be associated with the onset of the CDW phase. The azimuthal angle dependence of the resonant diffraction intensity observed at the Sb L1edge is associated with the difference in the population of unoccupied states and the anisotropy of the electron density of certain Sb ions.

RESUMO

The molecular mechanisms contributing to the regulation of Th17-mediated inflammation remain underexplored. We here report a SUMO-specific protease (SENP)2-mediated pathway induced in pathogenic Th17 cells that restricts the pathogenesis of inflammatory colitis. SENP2 regulates the maturation of small ubiquitin-like modifiers (SUMO) and recycles SUMO from the substrate proteins. We find higher levels of SENP2 in pathogenic Th17 cells. By deleting Senp2 in T-cell lineages in mice, we demonstrate that the lack of Senp2 exacerbates the severity of experimental colitis, which is linked to elevated levels of GM-CSF+IL-17A+ pathogenic Th17 cells and more severe dysbiosis of the intestinal microbiome. Adoptive transfer experiments demonstrate the cell-autonomous effect of Senp2 in restraining Th17 differentiation and colitis. The enzymatic activity of SENP2 is important for deSUMOylation of Smad4, which reduces Smad4 nuclear entry and Rorc expression. Our findings reveal a SENP2-mediated regulatory axis in the pathogenicity of Th17 cells.

RESUMO

X-ray absorption and resonant inelastic x-ray scattering spectra of LaPt2Si2single crystal at the Si 2pand La 4dedges are presented. The data are interpreted in terms of density functional theory, showing that the Si spectra can be described in terms of Sisanddlocal partial density of states (LPDOS), and the La spectra are due to quasi-atomic local 4fexcitations. Calculations show that Ptd-LPDOS dominates the occupied states, and a sharp localized Lafstate is found in the unoccupied states, in line with the observations.

RESUMO

Strontium titanate (STO), with a wide spectrum of emergent properties such as ferroelectricity and superconductivity, has received significant attention in the community of strongly correlated materials. In the strain-free STO film grown on the SrRuO3 buffer layer, the existing polar nanoregions can facilitate room-temperature ferroelectricity when the STO film thickness approaches 10 nm. Here we show that around this thickness scale, the freestanding STO films without the influence of a substrate show the tetragonal structure at room temperature, contrasting with the cubic structure seen in bulk form. The spectroscopic measurements reveal the modified Ti-O orbital hybridization that causes the Ti ion to deviate from its nominal 4+ valency (3d0 configuration) with excess delocalized 3d electrons. Additionally, the Ti ion in TiO6 octahedron exhibits an off-center displacement. The inherent symmetry lowering in ultrathin freestanding films offers an alternative way to achieve tunable electronic structures that are of paramount importance for future technological applications.

RESUMO

We have successfully fabricated high quality single crystalline La0.7Sr0.3MnO3 (LSMO) film in the freestanding form that can be transferred onto silicon wafer and copper mesh support. Using soft x-ray absorption (XAS) and resonant inelastic x-ray scattering (RIXS) spectroscopy in transmission and reflection geometries, we demonstrate that the x-ray emission from Mn 3s-2p core-to-core transition (3sPFY) seen in the RIXS maps can represent the bulk-like absorption signal with minimal self-absorption effect around the Mn L3-edge. Similar measurements were also performed on a reference LSMO film grown on the SrTiO3 substrate and the agreement between measurements substantiates the claim that the bulk electronic structures can be preserved even after the freestanding treatment process. The 3sPFY spectrum obtained from analyzing the RIXS maps offers a powerful way to probe the bulk electronic structures in thin films and heterostructures when recording the XAS spectra in the transmission mode is not available.

RESUMO

The SPECIES beamline has been transferred to the new 1.5 GeV storage ring at the MAX IV Laboratory. Several improvements have been made to the beamline and its endstations during the transfer. Together the Ambient Pressure X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy and Resonant Inelastic X-ray Scattering endstations are capable of conducting photoelectron spectroscopy in elevated pressure regimes with enhanced time-resolution and flux and X-ray scattering experiments with improved resolution and flux. Both endstations offer a unique capability for experiments at low photon energies in the vacuum ultraviolet and soft X-ray range. In this paper, the upgrades on the endstations and current performance of the beamline are reported.

RESUMO

Computed tomography (CT) of a 68-year-old man showed multiple small nodules in the bilateral lungs (maximum 14 mm in the left upper lobe). CT-guided biopsy of left upper lobe lesion showed no tumor or granuloma. Fluorodeoxyglucose (FDG) PET/CT showed multiple nodules with background-to-mild FDG-avid activity, and an incidental left scrotal skin lesion with intensely increased accumulation of F-FDG (SUVmax, 11.7), suspected malignant. After urologist consultation, local dermatological findings suggested a huge wart. Excision was done, and pathology concluded nodular papillary fibroepithelial polyp with acute and chronic inflammation.

RESUMO

Endohedral metallofullerenes, formed by encaging Gd inside fullerenes like C80, can exhibit enhanced proton relaxitivities compared with other Gd-chelates, making them the promising contrast agents for magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). However, the underlying key energy scales of Gd x Sc3-x N@C80 (x = 1-3) remain unclear. Here, we carry out resonant inelastic x-ray scattering (RIXS) experiments on Gd x Sc3-x N@C80 at Gd N 4,5-edges to directly study the electronic structure and spin flip excitations of Gd 4f electrons. Compared with reference Gd2O3 and contrast agent Gadodiamide, the features in the RIXS spectra of all metallofullerenes exhibit broader spectral lineshape and noticeable energy shift. Using atomic multiplet calculations, we have estimated the key energy scales such as the inter-site spin exchange field, intra-atomic 4f-4f Coulomb interactions, and spin-orbit coupling. The implications of these parameters to the 4f states of encapsulated Gd atoms are discussed.

RESUMO

Over the past decade, the advances in grating-based soft X-ray spectrometers have revolutionized the soft X-ray spectroscopies in materials research. However, these novel spectrometers are mostly dedicated designs, which cannot be easily adopted for applications with diverging demands. Here we present a versatile spectrometer design concept based on the Hettrick-Underwood optical scheme that uses modular mechanical components. The spectrometer's optics chamber can be used with gratings operated in either inside or outside orders, and the detector assembly can be reconfigured accordingly. The spectrometer can be designed to have high spectral resolution, exceeding 10 000 resolving power when using small source (∼1µm) and detector pixels (∼5µm) with high line density gratings (∼3000 lines/mm), or high throughput at moderate resolution. We report two such spectrometers with slightly different design goals and optical parameters in this paper. We show that the spectrometer with high throughput and large energy window is particularly useful for studying the sustainable energy materials. We demonstrate that the extensive resonant inelastic X-ray scattering (RIXS) map of battery cathode material LiNi1/3Co1/3Mn1/3O2 can be produced in few hours using such a spectrometer. Unlike analyzing only a handful of RIXS spectra taken at selected excitation photon energies across the elemental absorption edges to determine various spectral features like the localized dd excitations and non-resonant fluorescence emissions, these features can be easily identified in the RIXS maps. Studying such RIXS maps could reveal novel transition metal redox in battery compounds that are sometimes hard to be unambiguously identified in X-ray absorption and emission spectra. We propose that this modular spectrometer design can serve as the platform for further customization to meet specific scientific demands.

RESUMO

SPECIES is an undulator-based soft X-ray beamline that replaced the old I511 beamline at the MAX II storage ring. SPECIES is aimed at high-resolution ambient-pressure X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (APXPS), near-edge X-ray absorption fine-structure (NEXAFS), X-ray emission spectroscopy (XES) and resonant inelastic X-ray scattering (RIXS) experiments. The beamline has two branches that use a common elliptically polarizing undulator and monochromator. The beam is switched between the two branches by changing the focusing optics after the monochromator. Both branches have separate exit slits, refocusing optics and dedicated permanent endstations. This allows very fast switching between two types of experiments and offers a unique combination of the surface-sensitive XPS and bulk-sensitive RIXS techniques both in UHV and at elevated ambient-pressure conditions on a single beamline. Another unique property of the beamline is that it reaches energies down to approximately 27 eV, which is not obtainable on other current APXPS beamlines. This allows, for instance, valence band studies under ambient-pressure conditions. In this article the main properties and performance of the beamline are presented, together with selected showcase experiments performed on the new setup.

RESUMO

The low-temperature hidden-order state of URu2Si2 has long been a subject of intense speculation, and is thought to represent an as-yet-undetermined many-body quantum state not realized by other known materials. Here, x-ray absorption spectroscopy and high-resolution resonant inelastic x-ray scattering are used to observe electronic excitation spectra of URu2Si2, as a means to identify the degrees of freedom available to constitute the hidden-order wave function. Excitations are shown to have symmetries that derive from a correlated 5f(2) atomic multiplet basis that is modified by itinerancy. The features, amplitude, and temperature dependence of linear dichroism are in agreement with ground states that closely resemble the doublet Γ5 crystal field state of uranium.

RESUMO

Abstract The World Health Organization (WHO) lymphoma classification has been widely adopted by hematopathologists. However, its practical application by general pathologists is largely unknown. Using a hematopathology consultation program in Taiwan, we reviewed 406 cases. Diagnostic discrepancies were scored based upon whether the divergence would alter disease management according to National Comprehensive Cancer Network guidelines. Major discrepancies accounted for 55% (222/406), minor discrepancies for 5% (20/406) and agreement for 40% (164/406) cases. The more common groups in major discrepancies were non-diagnostic/ambiguous referral reports (116/222, 52%), tumor type revisions (52/222, 23%) and changes from malignant to benign lesions (32/222, 14%). In a total of 259 cases of lymphoma, the concordance rates were 41% (77/187) and 33% (24/72) for B-cell and T/natural killer (NK)-cell lymphomas, respectively. It appears that the WHO approach has made lymphoma classification rather poorly reproducible at least in countries where extensive use of an ancillary technique is not employed by general pathologists.

RESUMO

The appropriate management of hematology patients depends first on correct diagnoses. Expert review is important in reaching accurate diagnoses. To improve diagnostic accuracy, the Taiwan Society of Pathology and the Taiwan Division of the International Academy of Pathology has been conducting an expert consultation program for general pathologists since 2001. As per this program, we have received a total of 395 cases (406 samples) for review. We found that meaningful diagnostic discrepancies occurred frequently in hematopathology reviews. Ambiguous or nondiagnostic original reports were the major causative factor for the major discrepancy cases, which demonstrates that diagnostic uncertainty is a big problem for referring pathologists. However, the World Health Organization lymphoma classification may be poorly reproducible in countries where extensive use of an ancillary technique is not used by general pathologists. This review is intended to report the misdiagnoses most commonly seen in the hematopathology practice in Taiwan. Awareness of the easily misinterpreted entities helps to achieve the right diagnosis and improve patient care.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVES: We aimed to examine the relationships between asthma control, daytime sleepiness, and asthma-specific health-related quality of life (HRQOL) among children with asthma. Path analyses were conducted to test if daytime sleepiness can mediate the effect of asthma control status on asthma-specific HRQOL. METHODS: 160 dyads (pairs) of asthmatic children and their parents were collected for analyses. The Asthma Control and Communication Instrument (ACCI) was used to categorize adequate and poor asthma control status. The Cleveland Adolescent Sleepiness Questionnaire (CASQ) was used to measure children's daytime sleepiness, including sleep in school, awake in school, sleep in evening, and sleep during transport. The Patient-Reported Outcomes Measurement Information System (PROMIS) Asthma Impact Scale was used to measure asthma-specific HRQOL. RESULTS: Poorly controlled asthma was associated with daytime sleepiness and impaired asthma-specific HRQOL. Asthma control status was directly associated with asthma-specific HRQOL (P<.05), whereas sleep in school and sleep in evening domains of daytime sleepiness significantly mediated the relationship between poor asthma control and impaired HRQOL (P<.01). CONCLUSIONS: Asthma control status was associated with pediatric asthma-specific HRQOL, and the association was significantly mediated by daytime sleepiness. Healthcare providers need to address pediatric sleep needs related to poor asthma control to reduce the negative impact on HRQOL.

RESUMO

The fine article, "First Attack of Acute Urticaria in a Pediatric Emergency Department" by Liu et at, which appeared in the June issue of Pediatrics and Neonatology prompted me to submit comments and a review on the subject of urticaria in children, because this is indeed a pediatric problem that is frequently seen in clinical practice.

RESUMO

Detailed band structure calculations have been performed for Cd(2)Re(2)O(7) in high-, middle- and low-temperature (T) phases. The calculations are based on the observed lattice structures from x-ray diffraction measurements. The spin-orbit interaction is incorporated self-consistently in both the generalized gradient approximation (GGA) and the GGA plus Hubbard U (GGA+U) approaches. It is found that the on-site U has negligible effects on the Re 5d band structures; therefore both the GGA and GGA+U Re 5d band energies agree well with the observed O K-edge x-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) spectrum, whereas the Cd 4d band energy observed from photoemission spectroscopy can only be correctly reproduced by GGA+U calculations, indicating the relatively itinerant Re 5d and localized Cd 4d electrons. On the other hand, the spin-orbit coupling gives rise to nontrivial spin and orbital magnetic moments for the middle- T phase. Most unexpectedly, we found that the low- T phase exhibits quasi-two-dimensional Fermi surfaces. The calculated carrier numbers for the three phases are, at least qualitatively, consistent with the measured Hall coefficient.

RESUMO

Upper respiratory symptoms and sinusitis constitute a major reason for patient visits to their physician. The diagnosis of sinusitis is often made based on history and physical exam, but the accuracy of such diagnosis is questioned. Sinus films or CT scans are expensive. Obtaining pus from the middle meatus is impractical. We studied whether analysis of four easily measured substances (protein, pH, leukocyte esterase and nitrite) in nasal secretions could predict the presence or absence of bacterial sinusitis, as diagnosed by history combined with sinus x ray or CT. We enrolled 217 consecutive patients, aged 4-61 years, with clinically suspected bacterial sinusitis (duration of symptoms, 7-26 days), who had radiographic studies. All had their nasal secretions assayed using a simple rapid test. A clinical scoring system was developed to allow for a simple interpretation of test results of four assays in a single clinical score. All 52 patients with scores of 0 or 1 were CT or x-ray negative for bacterial sinusitis. All 144 with scores of > or =4 were imaging study positive. Of the 21 patients (10%) with scores of 2 or 3, 14 were imaging study negative and 7 were positive. We concluded that combining these four separate assays on nasal secretion into one number, it is possible to rule in or rule out bacterial sinusitis in 90% of patients. This inexpensive, simple test can decrease the cost and help increase the accuracy of the diagnosis, thus improving the care of patients with bacterial sinusitis.
