RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Phenome-wide association studies (PheWASs) have been conducted on Asian populations, including Koreans, but many were based on chip or exome genotyping data. Such studies have limitations regarding whole genome-wide association analysis, making it crucial to have genome-to-phenome association information with the largest possible whole genome and matched phenome data to conduct further population-genome studies and develop health care services based on population genomics. RESULTS: Here, we present 4,157 whole genome sequences (Korea4K) coupled with 107 health check-up parameters as the largest genomic resource of the Korean Genome Project. It encompasses most of the variants with allele frequency >0.001 in Koreans, indicating that it sufficiently covered most of the common and rare genetic variants with commonly measured phenotypes for Koreans. Korea4K provides 45,537,252 variants, and half of them were not present in Korea1K (1,094 samples). We also identified 1,356 new genotype-phenotype associations that were not found by the Korea1K dataset. Phenomics analyses further revealed 24 significant genetic correlations, 14 pleiotropic associations, and 127 causal relationships based on Mendelian randomization among 37 traits. In addition, the Korea4K imputation reference panel, the largest Korean variants reference to date, showed a superior imputation performance to Korea1K across all allele frequency categories. CONCLUSIONS: Collectively, Korea4K provides not only the largest Korean genome data but also corresponding health check-up parameters and novel genome-phenome associations. The large-scale pathological whole genome-wide omics data will become a powerful set for genome-phenome level association studies to discover causal markers for the prediction and diagnosis of health conditions in future studies.

RESUMO

A hierarchical cobalt carbonate hydroxide (CCH) nanostructure with outstanding electrochemical kinetics and structural stability for energy storage is largely unknown. Herein, we report tin oxide-functionalized CCH surface-enabled unique two-dimensional (2D) interlayered heterostructures that promote high conductivity with more electroactive sites to maximize redox reactions. A simple electrodeposition technique was utilized to construct the hierarchical 2D CCH electrode, while a surface-reinforced method was employed to fabricate the 2D interlayered SnO on CCH. The fabricated SnO@CCH-8 electrode showed a maximum areal capacity of 720 mC cm-2 (specific capacitance of 515 F g-1) at a current density of 1 mA cm-2 in 3 M KOH electrolyte. The obtained results indicate that the synergetic effect of SnO in the CCH network delivers an efficient charge transfer pathway to achieve high-performance energy storage. Moreover, SnO@CCH-8//AC was devised as a hybrid supercapacitor (HSC), ensuring a maximum specific capacitance of 129 F g-1 and maximum specific energy and power of 40.25 W h kg-1 and 9000 W kg-1, respectively, with better capacitance retention (94%) even beyond 10,000 cycles. To highlight the excellent performance in real-time studies, the HSC was constructed using a coin cell and displayed to power 21 light-emitting diodes (LEDs).

RESUMO

Vaccination against severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) has been acknowledged as an effective mean of preventing infection and hospitalization. However, the emergence of highly transmissible SARS-CoV-2 variants of concern (VOCs) has led to substantial increase in infections among children and adolescents. Vaccine-induced immunity and longevity have not been well defined in this population. Therefore, we aimed to analyze humoral and cellular immune responses against ancestral and SARS-CoV-2 variants after two shots of the BNT162b2 vaccine in healthy adolescents. Although vaccination induced a robust increase of spike-specific binding Abs and neutralizing Abs against the ancestral and SARS-CoV-2 variants, the neutralizing activity against the Omicron variant was significantly low. On the contrary, vaccine-induced memory CD4+ T cells exhibited substantial responses against both ancestral and Omicron spike proteins. Notably, CD4+ T cell responses against both ancestral and Omicron strains were preserved at 3 months after two shots of the BNT162b2 vaccine without waning. Polyfunctionality of vaccine-induced memory T cells was also preserved in response to Omicron spike protein. The present findings characterize the protective immunity of vaccination for adolescents in the era of continuous emergence of variants/subvariants.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Assessing and improving the quality of trauma care is crucial in modern trauma systems and centers. In Korea, evaluations of regional trauma centers are conducted annually to assess and improve trauma management quality. This includes using the Trauma and Injury Severity Score (TRISS) method to calculate the W-score and mortality Observed-to-Expected ratio (O:E ratio), which are used to evaluate the quality of care. We analyzed the potential for overestimation of the probability of survival using TRISS method for patients with neurotrauma, as well as the potential for errors when evaluating and comparing regional trauma centers. METHODS: We included patients who visited the regional trauma center between 2019 and 2021 and compared their probability of survival of the TRISS method, W-score, mortality O:E ratio, and misclassification rates. The patient groups were further subdivided into smaller subgroups based on age, Glasgow Coma Scale (GCS), and Injury Severity Score, and comparisons were made between the neurotrauma and non-neurotrauma groups within each subgroup. RESULTS: A total of 4,045 patients were enrolled in the study, with 1,639 of them having neurotrauma. The neurotrauma patient group had a W-score of -0.68 and a mortality O:E ratio of 1.044. The misclassification rate was found to be 13.3%, and patients with a GCS of 8 or less had a higher misclassification rate of 37.4%. CONCLUSION: The limitations of using the TRISS method for predicting outcomes in patients with severe neurotrauma are exposed in this study. The TRISS methodology demonstrated a high misclassification rate of approximately 40% in subgroups of patients with GCS less than 9, indicating that it may be less reliable in predicting outcomes for severely injured patients with low GCS. Clinicians and researchers should be cautious when using the TRISS method and consider alternative methods to evaluate patient outcomes and compare the quality of care provided by different trauma centers.

RESUMO

PURPOSE: The Da Vinci SP robot system was recently introduced, but its safety and feasibility for rectal cancer compared with the currently used robot system have not been reported. METHODS: This was a single-centre retrospective study. Data from patients who underwent abdominal total mesorectal excision (TME) from October 2015 to October 2022 were analysed. After propensity score matching, the short-term outcomes were compared. RESULTS: A total of 56 patient data were analysed. Intersphincteric resection was more common in the SP group (7 cases (25%) vs. 0 case (0%), p = 0.001). The operation time was significantly shorter in SP (184 vs. 227.5 min, p < 0.0001), but the docking time was similar. The postoperative complications were similar. There were no differences in the postoperative pain score and length of hospital stay. CONCLUSION: The SP robotic system for abdominal TME has acceptable short-term and is safe and technically feasible.

RESUMO

Tixagevimab/cilgavimab is a monoclonal antibody used to prevent coronavirus disease 2019 among immunocompromised hosts and maintained neutralizing activity against early omicron variants. Omicron BN.1 became a dominant circulating strain in Korea early 2023, but its susceptibility to tixagevimab/cilgavimab is unclear. We conducted plaque reduction neutralization test (PRNT) against BN.1 in a prospective cohort (14 patients and 30 specimens). BN.1 PRNT was conducted for one- and three-months after tixagevimab/cilgavimab administration and the average PRNT ND50 of each point was lower than the positive cut-off value of 20 (12.9 ± 4.5 and 13.2 ± 4.2, respectively, P = 0.825). In the paired analyses, tixagevimab/cilgavimab-administered sera could not actively neutralize BN.1 (PRNT ND50 11.5 ± 2.9, P = 0.001), compared with the reserved activity against BA.5 (ND50 310.5 ± 180.4). Unlike virus-like particle assay, tixagevimab/cilgavimab was not active against BN.1 in neutralizing assay, and would not be effective in the present predominance of BA.2.75 sublineages.

RESUMO

Background: Acute myocardial infarction (AMI) is one of the leading causes of death worldwide, and approximately half of AMI-related deaths occur before the affected individual reaches the hospital. The present study aimed to identify and validate genetic variants associated with AMI and their role as prognostic markers. Materials and methods: We conducted a replication study of 29 previously identified novel loci containing 85 genetic variants associated with early-onset AMI using a new independent set of 2,920 Koreans [88 patients with early- and 1,085 patients with late-onset AMI, who underwent percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI), and 1,747 healthy controls]. Results: Of the 85 previously reported early-onset variants, six were confirmed in our genome-wide association study with a false discovery rate of less than 0.05. Notably, rs12639023, a cis-eQTL located in the intergenic region between LINC02005 and CNTN3, significantly increased longitudinal cardiac mortality and recurrent AMI. CNTN3 is known to play a role in altering vascular permeability. Another variant, rs78631167, located upstream of PLAUR and known to function in fibrinolysis, was moderately replicated in this study. By surveying the nearby genomic region around rs78631167, we identified a significant novel locus (rs8109584) located 13 bp downstream of rs78631167. The present study showed that six of the early-onset variants of AMI are applicable to both early- and late-onset cases. Conclusion: Our results confirm markers that can potentially be utilized to predict, screen, prevent, and treat candidate patients with AMI and highlight the potential of rs12639023 as a prognostic marker for cardiac mortality in AMI.

RESUMO

Engineering vanadium-based materials with high conductivity, superior redox performance, and high operating voltage has attracted widespread attention in energy storage devices. Herein, we demonstrated a simple and feasible phosphorization technique to design three-dimensional (3D) network-like vanadyl pyrophosphate ((VO)2P2O7) nanowires on flexible carbon cloth (CC) (VP-CC). The phosphorization process enabled the VP-CC to increase the electronic conductivity, and the interconnected nano-network of VP-CC opens pathways for fast charge storage during the energy storage processes. Specifically, the 3D VP-CC electrodes and LiClO4 electrolyte designed as a Li-ion supercapacitor (LSC) demonstrate a maximum operating window of 2.0 V with a superior energy density (Ed) of 96 µWh cm-2, power density (Pd) of 10,028 µW cm-2, and outstanding cycling retention (98%) even after 10,000 cycles. In addition, a flexible LSC assembled utilizing VP-CC electrodes with a PVA/Li-based solid-state gel electrolyte exhibits a high capacitance value of 137 mF cm-2 and excellent cycling durability (86%) with a high Ed of 27 µWh cm-2 and Pd of 7237 µW cm-2. Considering excellent energy storage features, the highly conductive vanadium-based material has been utilized as an ideal electrode for various flexible/wearable energy storage devices with superior performance.

RESUMO

Objective: The regional trauma center (RTC) in our hospital was established in November 2015. The Korean Trauma Data Bank (KTDB) was established in 2013 and maintains a prospective database. In this study, based on KTDB data, we investigated the characteristics of traumatic brain injury (TBI) in patients who visited our RTC. Methods: Between 2017 and 2021, we analyzed the data of 1,939 patients with TBI. Demographic characteristics of patients were recorded, and variables such as transfer information, mechanism of injury, severity, occupational relevance, multiple trauma, and surgery were analyzed. Hospital length of stay (LOS), fatality, and Glasgow outcome scale (GOS) were analyzed to confirm treatment outcomes. Results: This study enrolled 1,939 patients with a median age of 58 years and male predominance (75.5%). The transfer time decreased (from 1.95 hours to 1.1 hours) following an increase in the frequency of direct transfers to our hospital each year. Motor vehicle-related accidents (48.4%) were implicated as the most common cause, and the severity of TBI showed an increasing trend each year. The outcomes confirmed that the fatality rate and GOS scores deteriorated. The mean LOS in the hospital was 26.92 days, with a fatality rate of 23.6% (458 patients). Conclusion: In this study, we investigated characteristics and treatment outcomes associated with TBI. Our research confirms that patients with TBI are currently well triaged at the accident site and rapidly transferred to our RTC. Follow-up studies are necessary to establish strategies for improved treatment outcomes.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to investigate the current status of intracranial pressure (ICP) monitoring in patients with severe traumatic brain injury (sTBI) in Korea and the association between ICP monitoring and prognosis. In addition, a survey was administered to Korean neurosurgeons to investigate the perception of ICP monitoring in patients with sTBI. METHODS: This study used data from the second Korea Neurotrauma Databank. Among the enrolled patients with sTBI, the following available clinical data were analyzed in 912 patients : Glasgow coma scale score on admission, ICP monitoring, mortality, and extended Glasgow outcome scale score at 6 months. In addition, we administered a survey, entitled "current status and perception of ICP monitoring in Korean patients with sTBI" to 399 neurosurgeons who were interested in traumatic brain injury. RESULTS: Among the 912 patients, 79 patients (8.7%) underwent ICP monitoring. The mortality and favorable outcome were compared between the groups with and without ICP monitoring, and no statistically significant results were found. Regarding the survey, there were 61 respondents. Among them, 70.4% of neurosurgeons responded negatively to performing ICP monitoring after craniectomy/craniotomy, while 96.7% of neurosurgeons responded negatively to performing ICP monitoring when craniectomy/ craniotomy was not conducted. The reasons why ICP monitoring was not performed were investigated, and most respondents answered that there were no actual guidelines or experiences with post-operative ICP monitoring for craniectomy/craniotomy. However, in cases wherein craniectomy/craniotomy was not performed, most respondents answered that ICP monitoring was not helpful, as other signs were comparatively more important. CONCLUSION: The proportion of performing ICP monitoring in patients with sTBI was low in Korea. The outcome and mortality were compared between the patient groups with and without ICP monitoring, and no statistically significant differences were noted in prognosis between these groups. Further, the survey showed that ICP monitoring in patients with sTBI was somewhat negatively recognized in Korea.

RESUMO

The immunogenicity of a heterologous vaccination regimen consisting of ChAdOx1 nCoV-19 (a chimpanzee adenovirus-vectored vaccine) followed by mRNA-1273 (a lipid-nanoparticle-encapsulated mRNA-based vaccine) against severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2), specifically the omicron variant (B.1.1.529), is poorly studied. The aim of this study was to evaluate the neutralizing antibody activity and immunogenicity of heterologous ChAdOx1 nCoV-19 and mRNA-1273 prime-boost vaccination against wild-type (BetaCoV/Korea/KCDC03/2020), alpha, beta, gamma, delta, and omicron variants of SARS-CoV-2 in Korea. A 50% neutralizing dilution (ND50) titer was determined in serum samples using the plaque reduction neutralization test. Antibody titer decreased significantly at 3 months compared with that at 2 weeks after the 2nd dose. On comparing the ND50 titers for the above-mentioned variants of concerns, it was observed that the ND50 titer for the omicron variant was the lowest. This study provides insights into cross-vaccination effects and can be useful for further vaccination strategies in Korea.

RESUMO

Introduction: The effect of tixagevimab/cilgavimab (Evusheld™; AstraZeneca, UK) should be evaluated in the context of concurrent outbreak situations. Methods: For serologic investigation of tixagevimab/cilgavimab during the BA.5 outbreak period, sera of immunocompromised (IC) hosts sampled before and one month after tixagevimab/cilgavimab administration and those of healthcare workers (HCWs) sampled one month after a 3rd shot of COVID-19 vaccines, five months after BA.1/BA.2 breakthrough infection (BI), and one month after BA.5 BI were investigated. Semi-quantitative anti-spike protein antibody (Sab) test and plaque reduction neutralizing test (PRNT) against BA.5 were performed. Results: A total of 19 IC hosts (five received tixagevimab/cilgavimab 300 mg and 14 received 600 mg) and 41 HCWs (21 experienced BA.1/BA.2 BI and 20 experienced BA.5 BI) were evaluated. Baseline characteristics did not differ significantly between IC hosts and HCWs except for age and hypertension. Sab significantly increased after tixagevimab/cilgavimab administration (median 130.2 BAU/mL before tixagevimab/cilgavimab, 5,665.8 BAU/mL after 300 mg, and 10,217 BAU/mL after 600 mg; both P < 0.001). Sab of one month after the 3rd shot (12,144.2 BAU/mL) or five months after BA.1/BA.2 BI (10,455.8 BAU/mL) were comparable with that of tixagevimab/cilgavimab 600 mg, while Sab of one month after BA.5 BI were significantly higher (22,216.0 BAU/mL; P < 0.001). BA.5 PRNT ND50 significantly increased after tixagevimab/cilgavimab administration (median ND50 29.6 before tixagevimab/cilgavimab, 170.8 after 300 mg, and 298.5 after 600 mg; both P < 0.001). The ND50 after tixagevimab/cilgavimab 600 mg was comparable to those of five months after BA.1 BI (ND50 200.9) while ND50 of one month after the 3rd shot was significantly lower (ND50 107.6; P = 0.019). The ND50 of one month after BA.5 BI (ND50 1,272.5) was highest among tested groups, but statistical difference was not noticed with tixagevimab/cilgavimab 600 mg. Conclusion: Tixagevimab/cilgavimab provided a comparable neutralizing activity against the BA.5 with a healthy adult population who were vaccinated with a 3rd shot and experienced BA.1/BA.2 BI.

RESUMO

Among several electrocatalysts for energy storage purposes including supercapacitors, metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), and their derivatives have spurred wide spread interest owing to their structural merits, multifariousness with tailor-made functionalities and tunable pore sizes. The electrochemical performance of supercapacitors can be further enhanced using in situ grown MOFs and their derivatives, eliminating the role of insulating binders whose "dead mass" contribution hampers the device capability otherwise. The expulsion of binders not only ensures better adhesion of catalyst material with the current collector but also facilitates the transport of electron and electrolyte ions and remedy cycle performance deterioration with better chemical stability. This review systematically summarizes different kinds of metal-ligand combinations for in situ grown MOFs and derivatives, preparation techniques, modification strategies, properties, and charge transport mechanisms as freestanding electrode materials in determining the performance of supercapacitors. In the end, the review also highlights potential promises, challenges, and state-of-the-art advancement in the rational design of electrodes to overcome the bottlenecks and to improve the capability of MOFs in energy storage applications.

RESUMO

This study aimed to identify a distant-recurrence image biomarker in NSCLC by investigating correlations between heterogeneity functional gene expression and fluorine-18-2-fluoro-2-deoxy-D-glucose positron emission tomography (18F-FDG PET) image features of NSCLC patients. RNA-sequencing data and 18F-FDG PET images of 53 patients with NSCLC (19 with distant recurrence and 34 without recurrence) from The Cancer Imaging Archive and The Cancer Genome Atlas Program databases were used in a combined analysis. Weighted correlation network analysis was performed to identify gene groups related to distant recurrence. Genes were selected for functions related to distant recurrence. In total, 47 image features were extracted from PET images as radiomics. The relationship between gene expression and image features was estimated using a hypergeometric distribution test with the Pearson correlation method. The distant recurrence prediction model was validated by a random forest (RF) algorithm using image texture features and related gene expression. In total, 37 gene modules were identified by gene-expression pattern with weighted gene co-expression network analysis. The gene modules with the highest significance were selected (p-value < 0.05). Nine genes with high protein-protein interaction and area under the curve (AUC) were identified as hub genes involved in the proliferation function, which plays an important role in distant recurrence of cancer. Four image features (GLRLM_SRHGE, GLRLM_HGRE, SUVmean, and GLZLM_GLNU) and six genes were identified to be correlated (p-value < 0.1). AUCs (accuracy: 0.59, AUC: 0.729) from the 47 image texture features and AUCs (accuracy: 0.767, AUC: 0.808) from hub genes were calculated using the RF algorithm. AUCs (accuracy: 0.783, AUC: 0.912) from the four image texture features and six correlated genes and AUCs (accuracy: 0.738, AUC: 0.779) from only the four image texture features were calculated using the RF algorithm. The four image texture features validated by heterogeneity group gene expression were found to be related to cancer heterogeneity. The identification of these image texture features demonstrated that advanced prediction of NSCLC distant recurrence is possible using the image biomarker.

RESUMO

Recently, liquid biopsies have been used to diagnose various diseases, including cancer. Body fluids contain many substances, including cells, proteins, and nucleic acids originating from normal tissues, but some of these substances also originate from the diseased area. The investigation and analysis of these substances in the body fluids play a pivotal role in the diagnosis of various diseases. Therefore, it is important to accurately separate the required substances, and several techniques are developed to be used for this purpose. We have developed a lab-on-a-disc type of device and platform named CD-PRIME. This device is automated and has good results for sample contamination and sample stability. Moreover, it has advantages of a good acquisition yield, a short operation time, and high reproducibility. In addition, depending on the type of disc to be mounted, plasma containing cell-free DNA, circulating tumor cells, peripheral blood mononuclear cells, or buffy coats can be separated. Thus, the acquisition of a variety of materials present in the body fluids can be done for a variety of downstream applications, including the study of omics.

RESUMO

Early-onset acute myocardial infarction (AMI) may have a higher genetic predisposition than late-onset AMI. The present study aimed to identify and characterize germline variants that affect early-onset AMI using whole-genome sequencing (WGS). We performed a genome-wide association study based on the WGS of 1239 Koreans, including 596 early-onset AMI patients and 643 healthy individuals. Patients with AMI who underwent percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) caused by atherothrombotic occlusive lesions were included in the study. A total of 29 novel loci were found to be associated with early-onset AMI. These loci are involved in thrombosis, fibrinolysis, inflammation, and lipid metabolism. One of the associated single nucleotide variants (SNVs), rs1614576, located upstream of PRKCB, is known to be associated with thrombus formation. Additionally, the results revealed a novel locus, rs78631167, located upstream of PLAUR which plays a critical role in regulating plasminogen activation and is related to fibrinolysis. The association between early-onset AMI and rs9357455, which is located upstream of PHACTR1 and regulates inflammation in AMI, was found. Moreover, we identified a lipid metabolism related genetic risk locus, rs5072, in the APOA1-AS gene. This study provides new evidence supporting the genetic association between early-onset AMI and thrombosis and fibrinolysis, as well as inflammation and lipid metabolism, by analyzing the whole-genome of 596 patients with early-onset AMI who have been treated with PCI. Our findings highlight potential genetic markers for the prediction and management of AMI, as well as for understanding the etiology of AMI.

RESUMO

Early detection is critical for minimizing mortality from cancer. Plasma cell-free DNA (cfDNA) contains the signatures of tumor DNA, allowing us to quantify the signature and diagnose early-stage tumors. Here, we report a novel tumor fragment quantification method, TOF (Tumor Originated Fragment) for the diagnosis of lung cancer by quantifying and analyzing both the plasma cfDNA methylation patterns and fragmentomic signatures. TOF utilizes the amount of ctDNA predicted from the methylation density information of each cfDNA read mapped on 6243 lung-tumor-specific CpG markers. The 6243 tumor-specific markers were derived from lung tumor tissues by comparing them with corresponding normal tissues and healthy blood from public methylation data. TOF also utilizes two cfDNA fragmentomic signatures: 1) the short fragment ratio, and 2) the 5' end-motif profile. We used 298 plasma samples to analyze cfDNA signatures using enzymatic methyl-sequencing data from 201 lung cancer patients and 97 healthy controls. The TOF score showed 0.98 of the area under the curve in correctly classifying lung cancer from normal samples. The TOF score resolution was high enough to clearly differentiate even the early-stage non-small cell lung cancer patients from the healthy controls. The same was true for small cell lung cancer patients.

RESUMO

Shunt malfunction is the most common cause of ventriculoperitoneal shunt failure. In literature, occlusion of the tube with brain parenchyma, choroid plexus, blood, and proteinaceous debris has been suggested as a mechanism of obstruction. We herein report a case of shunt malfunction without any identifiable occlusion. Our case findings suggest that unapparent abdominal pathology, including inflammation and fibrosis, should be considered when treating shunt failures.

RESUMO

Objective: The Rotterdam scoring system (RSS) is useful for prognosis prediction in patients with severe traumatic brain injury (sTBI). It comprises basal cistern, midline shifting (MLS), epidural hematoma (EDH), and subarachnoid hemorrhage (SAH)/intraventricular hemorrhage (IVH) status. Brain computed tomography (CT) is important to assessing patients with sTBI; however, results often change over time. We aimed to determine whether RSS outcome prediction differs by initial brain CT scan time after the trauma in patients with sTBI. Methods: We used data from the second Korea Neurotrauma Data Bank, and analyzed 455 patients; RSS, Glasgow Outcome Scale Extended (GOSE) on 6-months, and the CT scan time were obtained. Unfavorable outcomes were defined as a GOSE score of 1-4. Participants were divided into 2 groups according to when brain CT scan was performed (> or ≤ 2 hours after trauma). The relationship between the prognosis of patients with sTBI and RSS score was examined by calculating the odds ratios. Univariate and multivariate analyses were performed. Results: In both univariate and multivariate analysis, the total RSS and basal cistern status were statistically correlated with prognosis in both groups. EDH and SAH/IVH showed statistically significant difference according to CT scan time. MLS was associated with prognosis in both groups in univariate analysis although not in multivariate analysis. Conclusion: The total RSS score predicted prognosis 6 months after trauma in patients with sTBI, regardless of CT scan time. However, the prognostic predictive power of each item constituting the RSS varied according to CT scan time.

RESUMO

In this study, we propose a method for inspecting the condition of hull surfaces using underwater images acquired from the camera of a remotely controlled underwater vehicle (ROUV). To this end, a soft voting ensemble classifier comprising six well-known convolutional neural network models was used. Using the transfer learning technique, the images of the hull surfaces were used to retrain the six models. The proposed method exhibited an accuracy of 98.13%, a precision of 98.73%, a recall of 97.50%, and an F1-score of 98.11% for the classification of the test set. Furthermore, the time taken for the classification of one image was verified to be approximately 56.25 ms, which is applicable to ROUVs that require real-time inspection.
