RESUMO

PURPOSE: To investigate the 5-year treatment outcomes of retinopathy of prematurity in infants <500 g birth weight and compare laser and anti-vascular endothelial growth factor therapies. METHODS: A multicenter retrospective study comprised 24 eyes of 13 patients treated for Type 1 retinopathy of prematurity, followed for 5 years. Initial treatment was laser and anti-vascular endothelial growth factor in 13 and 11 eyes, respectively. Data collected included sex, birth characteristics, retinopathy of prematurity characteristics at the time of treatment, best-corrected visual acuity (BCVA), spherical equivalent, and astigmatism at 5 years posttreatment. RESULTS: Median BCVA was 0.15 logarithm of the minimum angle of resolution (interquartile range, 0.0-0.5). Snellen BCVA was ≥20/40 in 73% and ≥20/20 in 27% of eyes. Median spherical equivalent was -2.37 (interquartile range, -6.1 to -0.1); 75% had myopia (≤-0.5 D), and 25% had high myopia (≤-6.0 D). Median astigmatism was 1.25 (interquartile range, 0.9-3.0); 46% had ≥1.5 D. Anti-vascular endothelial growth factor-treated eyes showed less myopia ( P < 0.009), with no BCVA or astigmatism difference ( P = 0.997, P = 0.271) compared with laser-treated eyes. CONCLUSION: One-quarter of the eyes exhibited good visual acuity (Snellen BCVA of ≥20/20) 5 years after retinopathy of prematurity treatment. Refractive errors were common. Anti-vascular endothelial growth factor therapy may be superior to laser therapy in myopic refractive error.

RESUMO

Vincristine-induced peripheral neuropathy (VIPN) adversely affects the quality of life and treatment continuity of patients. The endothelial glycocalyx (eGCX) protects nerves from harmful substances released from the capillary vessels, but its role in peripheral neuropathy remains unclear. We investigated the impact of eGCX protection on VIPN. Using a murine model of VIPN, we administered nafamostat mesylate to protect the eGCX shedding, and analyzed the eGCX integrity and manifestation of peripheral neuropathy. Nafamostat treatment suppressed allodynia associated with neuropathy. Additionally, nafamostat administration resulted in the suppression of increased vascular permeability in capillaries of peripheral nerves, further indicating its positive influence on eGCX in VIPN model mice. This study provided the importance of eGCX in VIPN. With the potential for rapid clinical translation through drug repositioning, nafamostat may be a new promising treatment for the prevention of VIPN.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVES: To compare real-world, long-term outcomes of laser and anti-vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) therapies in patients with retinopathy of prematurity (ROP). METHODS: This was a multicentre retrospective study. We included 264 eyes of 139 patients treated for type 1 ROP or aggressive ROP (AROP) who were followed for at least 4 years. Laser treatment was initially performed in 187 eyes (the laser group), and anti-VEGF therapy was initially performed in 77 eyes (the anti-VEGF group). We collected data on sex, birth characteristics, zone, stage, and the presence of plus disease at the time of treatment and best-corrected visual acuity (BCVA), spherical equivalent (SE), and ocular complications (amblyopia and strabismus) in patients aged 4-6 years. We investigated the associations between treatment outcomes (BCVA, SE and the presence of amblyopia and strabismus) and influencing factors, including treatment procedure (anti-VEGF or laser therapy), sex, birth characteristics, zone, stage, and the presence of plus disease, using multivariable analysis and logistic regression analyses. RESULTS: The initial treatment procedure was not associated with any specific treatment outcome. Subgroup analysis of patients with zone I ROP revealed that the anti-VEGF-treated eyes had significantly better BCVA and higher SE than laser-treated eyes (p = 0.004, p = 0.009, respectively). Female patients presented significantly better BCVA, less amblyopia and less strabismus than male patients (p < 0.001, p = 0.029, p = 0.008, respectively). CONCLUSIONS: In zone I ROP, anti-VEGF therapy led to better visual acuity and less myopic refractive error than laser treatment.

RESUMO

Heparan sulfate (HS) is a glycocalyx component present in the extracellular matrix and cell-surface HS proteoglycans (HSPGs). Although HSPGs are known to play functional roles in multiple aspects of tumor development and progression, the effect of HS expression in the tumor stroma on tumor growth in vivo remains unclear. We conditionally deleted Ext1, which encodes a glycosyltransferase essential for the biosynthesis of HS chains, using S100a4-Cre (S100a4-Cre; Ext1f/f) to investigate the role of HS in cancer-associated fibroblasts, which is the main component of the tumor microenvironment. Subcutaneous transplantation experiments with murine MC38 colon cancer and Pan02 pancreatic cancer cells demonstrated substantially larger subcutaneous tumors in S100a4-Cre; Ext1f/f mice. Additionally, the number of myofibroblasts observed in MC38 and Pan02 subcutaneous tumors of S100a4-Cre; Ext1f/f mice decreased. Furthermore, the number of intratumoral macrophages decreased in MC38 subcutaneous tumors in S100a4-Cre; Ext1f/f mice. Finally, the expression of matrix metalloproteinase-7 (MMP-7) markedly increased in Pan02 subcutaneous tumors in S100a4-Cre; Ext1f/f mice, suggesting that it may contribute to rapid growth. Therefore, our study demonstrates that the tumor microenvironment with HS-reduced fibroblasts provides a favorable environment for tumor growth by affecting the function and properties of cancer-associated fibroblasts, macrophages, and cancer cells.

RESUMO

PURPOSE: We investigated potential risk factors for visual prognosis in Japanese patients with exogenous endophthalmitis. METHODS: In this retrospective observational multicenter cohort study, risk factors for legal blindness at 12 weeks after treatment initiation were evaluated based on patient characteristics, initial BCVA, causative events, pathogens, ocular symptoms, duration from symptom onset to initial treatment, and selected treatments. RESULTS: Overall, 23.1% of eyes developed legal blindness. The six risk factors for legal blindness were presence of eye pain, pathogen identification, poor BCVA at the initial visit, longer duration from symptom onset to initial treatment, type of causative event, and type of causative pathogen. Regarding the type of causative pathogen, coagulase-negative staphylococci was associated with a better visual impairment outcome. CONCLUSION: Exogenous endophthalmitis remains a severe ocular infection; however, it can be managed with rapid treatment, as well as other advances in medical knowledge and technology.

RESUMO

PURPOSE: We investigated potential predictive factors for visual prognosis in Japanese patients with endogenous endophthalmitis. DESIGN: Retrospective observational multicenter cohort study. METHODS: We examined the characteristics of 77 Japanese patients with endogenous endophthalmitis and performed statistical analyses of these real-world data. The primary endpoint was the identification of factors associated with visual prognosis. We examined differences between patients in the better vision and legal blindness groups at 12 weeks after treatment initiation. RESULTS: The five risk factors for visual impairment at 12 weeks after treatment initiation were presence of pressure injuries, severe clinical symptoms (presence of eye pain and ciliary injection), pathogen identification, and poor best-corrected visual acuity at baseline. Staphylococcus aureus and fungus were associated with a better visual impairment outcome. CONCLUSIONS: Endogenous endophthalmitis remains a severe ocular infection; however, it can be managed with rapid treatments, as well as other advances in medical knowledge and technology.

RESUMO

Purpose: To report the clinical findings and treatment outcomes of a patient with a choroidal macroaneurysm associated with a presumed anomalous short posterior ciliary artery. Observations: A 74-year-old woman with anomalous choroidal vessels had mild visual impairment. Best-corrected visual acuity (BCVA) was 20/25 in the left eye. Funduscopic examination showed a protruded orange lesion temporal to the fovea with exudative changes and retinal hemorrhage. An extensive, thick choroidal vessel network was observed in the superficial choroid. Optical coherence tomography showed a steep protruded lesion beyond the retinal pigment epithelium (RPE) and RPE elevations corresponding to an anomalous choroidal vessel network located at the RPE/Bruch's membrane complex. Optical coherence tomography angiography showed decorrelation signals corresponding to the steep protruding lesion and anomalous choroidal vessel network. Fluorescein angiography and indocyanine green angiography revealed an aneurysmal lesion and anomalous choroidal vessel network in the choroidal arterial phase. A choroidal macroaneurysm associated with a presumed anomalous short posterior ciliary artery was diagnosed. Regardless of repeated treatment with intravitreal injections of aflibercept/broluzumab and photodynamic therapy, the patient's BCVA decreased to 20/50. Finally, direct photocoagulation for choroidal macroaneurysm was performed, which resolved the exudative change, and the patient's BCVA improved to 20/25. Conclusions and importance: A choroidal macroaneurysm associated with an anomalous short posterior ciliary artery could be a differential diagnosis of polypoidal choroidal vasculopathy. When visual impairment develops due to exudative changes, direct photocoagulation may be the most appropriate treatment option.

RESUMO

Laser therapy is the most effective treatment considered for retinopathy of prematurity (ROP). We compared the foveal morphology of the retina in eyes with a history of ROP to that of full-term children. This cross-sectional comparative study included 74 patients with a history of ROP, aged 4-6 years. Among them, 41 underwent laser treatment for ROP. The clinical findings and retinal morphology in these patients were compared to that of 33 patients who had spontaneous ROP regression and 30 age-matched full-term controls. All the patients with ROP had 20/40 or better best-corrected visual acuity (BCVA). The foveal thickness was significantly thicker in laser-treated ROP eyes than in regressed ROP eyes and controls. The outer nuclear layer was significantly thicker, and the inner segment (IS) of the photoreceptors and the inner retinal layer were significantly thicker in the laser-treated ROP eyes than that in the control eyes. In the patients with ROP and controls, better BCVA was associated positively with deeper foveal depression, which was associated with a later gestational age. Our results suggest that prematurity and laser treatment affect the foveal morphology and BCVA.

RESUMO

PURPOSE: To evaluate the clinical characteristics, treatment trends, and visual prognosis of submacular hemorrhage (SMH) secondary to neovascular age-related macular degeneration (nAMD) and retinal arterial macroaneurysm (RAM). METHODS: This retrospective study enrolled 187 Japanese patients with SMH at 10 institutions from 2015 to 2018. Medical records including SMH etiology, best-corrected visual acuity (BCVA), fundus photographs, optical coherence tomography images, and selected treatments were analyzed. RESULTS: Major causes of SMH were typical nAMD (tnAMD) (18%), polypoidal choroidal vasculopathy (PCV) (50%) and RAM (29%). Age, male/female ratio, baseline BCVA, central retinal thickness, and involved retinal layers were significantly different between etiologies (all P<0.0001). Treatment with anti-vascular endothelial growth factor drugs with and without intravitreal gas injection was chosen for half of eyes in the tnAMD and PCV groups, whereas vitrectomy was performed in 83.7% of eyes with RAM. The final BCVA improved significantly from baseline in the PCV and RAM groups (P = 0.0009, P<0.0001) and final BCVA was significantly better in the PCV group at a level similar to the other groups (P = 0.0007, P = 0.0008). BCVA improvement from baseline was significantly greater in the RAM group compared with the tnAMD (P = 0.0152) and PCV (P = 0.017) groups. Multivariate analysis revealed better final BCVA was significantly associated with younger age (P = 0.0054), better baseline BCVA (P = 0.0021), RAM subtype (P = 0.0446), and no tnAMD (P = 0.001). CONCLUSIONS: The characteristics of, and treatment strategy for, SMH were different between the underlying diseases. Anti-vascular endothelial growth factor treatment with or without expansile gas was mainly chosen for SMH in tnAMD and PCV, whereas vitrectomy with gas was the most common treatment for RAM, and the higher rate for vitrectomy might result in the greater BCVA improvement in the RAM group than in the other groups. Final BCVA was better in PCV, RAM, and tnAMD, in that order, because patients with PCV were younger and had better baseline BCVA.

RESUMO

PURPOSE: To investigate the clinical features, treatment options, and visual outcomes of submacular hemorrhage (SMH) secondary to neovascular age-related macular degeneration (nAMD). DESIGN: A retrospective, observational case series. METHODS: Setting: Multicenter institutional setting. Patient Population: A total of 127 patients (127 eyes; 88 men, 39 women; (mean age, 74.2 years)) diagnosed with AMD-associated SMHs exceeding 2 disc diameters involving the fovea. Observation: The AMD types, previous treatments, treatment options, anatomic findings, and best-corrected visual acuity (BCVA) were assessed. Main Outcome Measures: Clinical features, treatment options, and visual outcomes of SMHs secondary to nAMD. RESULTS: Thirty-two eyes had typical AMD, 94 eyes polypoidal choroidal vasculopathy (PCV), and one eye retinal angiomatous proliferation. Eighty-five eyes were treatment-naïve; 42 eyes were treated previously: anti-vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) therapy (n = 26), photodynamic therapy (n = 3), and combined therapy (n = 13). Treatment of SMHs included vitrectomy (36 eyes), pneumatic displacement (49 eyes), and anti-VEGF monotherapy (42 eyes). The final BCVA improved significantly in treatment-naïve cases from 0.86 to 0.62 logarithm of the minimal angle of resolution (logMAR) unit (Snellen equivalent from 20/145 to 20/83) and from 0.80 to 0.56 (Snellen equivalent from 20/126 to 20/73) in PCV cases. Meanwhile, the BCVA logMAR values improved from 1.15 to 0.75 (Snellen equivalent from 20/283 to 20/112) and from 0.87 to 0.63 (Snellen equivalent from 20/148 to 20/85) in eyes that underwent vitrectomy or pneumatic displacement, respectively. In eyes with BCVAs between 20/133 to 20/40 at SMH onset, the final VA in the pneumatic displacement group was better than in the anti-VEGF monotherapy group. One eye had a retinal detachment and 1 eye had a macular hole in the vitrectomy group, and 5 eyes had a vitreous hemorrhage in the pneumatic displacement group. CONCLUSIONS: The recommended treatment for SMHs secondary to nAMD exceeding 2 disc area and with BCVA below 20/40 is vitrectomy or pneumatic displacement for visual improvement.

RESUMO

PURPOSE: To investigate potential clinical and multimodal imaging factors in central serous chorioretinopathy (CSC) recurrence. METHODS: The study was performed at nine Japanese medical institutions for patients who had experienced an active CSC episode. Demographic data and medical history were reviewed retrospectively. Significant differences in chronic manifestation, leakage site, leakage point number, leakage intensity, choroidal hyperpermeability, central retinal thickness (CRT) and subfoveal choroidal thickness were analysed between the recurrence and non-recurrence groups. RESULTS: In total, 538 eyes (538 patients) diagnosed with CSC (402 men, 136 women; mean age: 53.4 ± 11.9 years) were enrolled. Among them, 253 eyes (47.0%) developed ≥1 recurrence (follow-up: 15.9 ± 13.5 months, range 3-86 months). Univariate and multivariate analyses indicated that a history of corticosteroid use (odds ratio [OR], 5.52; 95% confidence interval [CI], 1.39-21.92; p = 0.015), bilateral disease (OR, 3.94; 95% CI, 1.47-10.6; p = 0.007), chronic manifestations (OR, 7.12; 95% CI, 2.93-17.28; p < 0.001), non-intense fluorescein leakage (OR, 3.34; 95% CI, 1.44-7.75; p = 0.005) and initial CRT (OR, 0.997; 95% CI, 0.993-0.999; p = 0.049) were significantly associated with CSC recurrence. Receiver operating characteristic curves were created, and the area under the curve for the multivariate logistic regression model of these five factors was 0.814. CONCLUSION: Patients with CSC who received corticosteroids and had bilateral disease, chronic manifestation, non-intense fluorescein leakage on fluorescein angiography or a relatively thinner CRT should be closely monitored to identify whether they are at high risk of recurrence.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: To identify the risk factors and characteristics of central serous chorioretinopathy (CSC) with subsequent macular neovascularisation (MNV) detected on optical coherence tomography angiography (OCTA). METHODS AND ANALYSIS: We included patients from six institutions who were initially diagnosed with CSC and subsequently did or did not develop MNV detected by OCTA. Potential influencing factors were identified by evaluating the patients' baseline demographics, multimodal fundus imaging, treatment options, recurrence and outcomes in both groups. RESULTS: We enrolled 176 eyes in 152 patients (112 men, 40 women; mean age: 52.1±10.4 years) with a mean follow-up of 30.4±16.3 months. Secondary MNV was present in 23 eyes (13.1%), and non-MNV was observed in 153 eyes (86.9%) by OCTA. Multivariate analysis revealed that older age (OR 1.06; 95% CI 1.01 to 1.11; p=0.014), chronic CSC (OR 3.05; 95% CI 1.12 to 8.30; p=0.029), leakage sites within the fovea on fluorescein angiography (OR 7.60; 95% CI, 1.89 to 30.48; p=0.004) and recurrent fluid within the first year (OR 5.12; 95% CI 1.66 to 15.77; p=0.012) were risk factors for subsequent MNV. Moreover, eyes with CSC complicated with MNV were characterised by poor visual acuity and low complete fluid resolution rates. CONCLUSION: The factors associated with MNV secondary to CSC were older age, higher rates of chronic CSC and recurrence, and foveal leakage points on fluorescein angiography.

RESUMO

AIMS/INTRODUCTION: In older patients, the management of diabetic macular edema (DME) can be complicated by comorbidities, geriatric syndrome, and socioeconomic status. This study aims to evaluate the effects of aging on the management of DME. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This is a real-world clinical study including 1,552 patients with treatment-naïve center-involved DME. The patients were categorized into 4 categories by age at baseline (C1, <55; C2, 55-64; C3, 65-74; and C4, ≥75 years). The outcomes were the change in logarithm of the minimum angle of resolution best-corrected visual acuity (logMAR BCVA) and central retinal thickness (CRT), and the number of treatments from baseline to 2 years. RESULTS: From baseline to 2 years, the mean changes in logMAR BCVA from baseline to 2 years were -0.01 in C1, -0.06 in C2, -0.07 in C3, and 0.01 in C4 (P = 0.016), and the mean changes in CRT were -136.2 µm in C1, -108.8 µm in C2, -100.6 µm in C3, and -89.5 µm in C4 (P = 0.008). Treatments applied in the 2 year period exhibited decreasing trends with increasing age category on the number of intravitreal injections of anti-VEGF agents (P = 0.06), selecting local corticosteroid injection (P = 0.031), vitrectomy (P < 0.001), and laser photocoagulation outside the great vascular arcade (P < 0.001). CONCLUSIONS: Compared with younger patients with DME, patients with DME aged ≥75 years showed less frequent treatment, a lower BCVA gain, and a smaller CRT decrease. The management and visual outcome in older patients with DME would be unsatisfactory in real-world clinical practice.

RESUMO

PURPOSE: To report a case of a neonate with acute retinal necrosis, lens vacuoles, and encephalitis associated with herpes simplex virus (HSV) infection. DESIGN: Case report. METHODS: Retrospective chart review. RESULTS: A male neonate was brought for screening for retinopathy of prematurity at the corrected age of 32 weeks. Slit-lamp examination showed lens vacuoles in both eyes. Fundus examination revealed extensive retinal detachments with prominent retinal whitening, subretinal exudates, and retinal hemorrhage. Computed tomography of the brain showed encephalomalacia. Polymerase chain reaction of cerebrospinal fluid and anterior chamber fluid was both positive for HSV-1. Despite systemic anti-viral therapy, a rhegmatogenous retinal detachment and subsequent proliferative vitreoretinopathy developed in the patient's right eye. The retinal detachment in the left eye resolved, but significant chorioretinal degeneration occurred. With time lens vacuoles decreased in number. CONCLUSIONS: Clinicians should remember this rare, but devastating condition without specific prodromal symptoms.

RESUMO

PURPOSE: To determine the baseline characteristics of patients with central retinal vein occlusion (CRVO) that were significantly associated with the best-corrected visual acuity (BCVA) at the initial examination. METHODS: This was a retrospective multicenter study using the medical records registered in 17 ophthalmological institutions in Japan. Patients with untreated CRVO (≥20-years-of-age) who were initially examined between January 2013 and December 2017 were studied. The patients' baseline factors that were significantly associated with the BCVA at the initial examination were determined by univariate and multivariate linear regression analyses. RESULTS: Data from 517 eyes of 517 patients were analyzed. Univariate analyses showed that an older age (r = 0.194, p < 0.001) and the right eye (r = -0.103, p < 0.019) were significantly associated with poorer BCVA at the initial visit. Multivariate analyses also showed that an older age (ß = 0.191, p < 0.001) and the right eye (ß = -0.089, p = 0.041) were significantly associated with poorer BCVA at the initial visit. CONCLUSIONS: The results indicate that an older age, a known strong factor, and the right eye were significantly associated with poorer BCVA at the initial visit to the hospital. These results suggest that functional and/or anatomical differences between the right and left eyes may be involved in these results.

RESUMO

PURPOSE: To report the results of anti-vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) therapy using treat-and-extend (TAE) and treatment cessation regimens for exudative age-related macular degeneration (AMD) and pachychoroid neovasculopathy (PN). METHODS: We retrospectively studied 101 treatment-naïve eyes of 101 patients with exudative AMD and PN that underwent anti-VEGF therapy using TAE and treatment cessation regimen with a follow-up period of ≥12 months. Best-corrected visual acuity (BCVA), treatment frequency, and number of eyes with successful treatment cessation were measured. Successful treatment cessation was defined as dry macula retention without treatment for >16 weeks after the last injections. Factors related to the successful treatment cessation were evaluated. RESULTS: BCVA was maintained at the last visit with a mean follow-up period of 49.9 ± 26.9 months. The injection number decreased from 6.8 ± 2.31 at the first year to 3.7 ± 3.64 at the fifth year. At the last visit, 48 (47.5%) eyes were being treated at an interval of ≥12 weeks or were under treatment cessation. Successful treatment cessation during the follow-up period and at the last visit were achieved in 56 (55.4%) and 27 (26.7%) eyes, with a median treatment-free period of 66 and 126 weeks, respectively. Good early treatment response and a small recurrence number were associated with successful treatment cessation at the last visit. CONCLUSION: Patients with good early response to treatment and fewer recurrences may achieve treatment cessation. This information could help physicians predict the achievement of treatment cessation for a considerable period.

RESUMO

PURPOSE: Heparan sulfate (HS) is one of the factors that has been suggested to be associated with angiogenesis and invasion of glioblastoma (GBM), an aggressive and fast-growing brain tumor. However, it remains unclear how HS of endothelial cells is involved in angiogenesis in glioblastoma and its prognosis. Thus, we investigated the effect of endothelial cell HS on GBM development. METHODS: We generated endothelial cell-specific knockout of Ext1, a gene encoding a glycosyltransferase and essential for HS synthesis, and murine GL261 glioblastoma cells were orthotopically transplanted. Two weeks after transplantation, we examined the tumor progression and underlying mechanisms. RESULTS: The endothelial cell-specific Ext1 knockout (Ext1 CKO ) mice exhibited reduced HS expression specifically in the vascular endothelium of the brain capillaries compared with the control wild-type (WT) mice. GBM growth was significantly suppressed in Ext1 CKO mice compared with that in WT mice. After GBM transplantation, the survival rate was significantly higher in Ext1 CKO mice than in WT mice. We investigated how the effect of fibroblast growth factor 2 (FGF2), which is known as an angiogenesis-promoting factor, differs between Ext1 CKO and WT mice by using an in vivo Matrigel assay and demonstrated that endothelial cell-specific HS reduction attenuated the effect of FGF2 on angiogenesis. CONCLUSIONS: HS reduction in the vascular endothelium of the brain suppressed GBM growth and neovascularization in mice. RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Dual antiplatelet therapy (DAPT) is necessary for stent assisted coiling. However, long term use of DAPT has a potential risk of hemorrhagic events. We aimed to examine the relationship between clopidogrel reactivity and complications. METHODS: Patients who underwent stent assisted coiling for unruptured aneurysms or previously treated aneurysms and received periprocedural DAPT in our institution between August 2011 to March 2020 were included. Platelet reactivity for clopidogrel was measured by VerifyNow assay system, and we defined the cut off value of P2Y12 Reaction Units (PRU) at 208 and classified patients as hypo-responders (PRU≧208) or responders (PRU<208). The rates of hemorrhagic and thrombotic events within 30 days (acute phase) and 30 days after the procedure (delayed phase) were compared between the two groups. Furthermore, changes in hemoglobin levels were measured before and after the procedure and at chronic stages (1 to 6 months thereafter). RESULTS: From 61 patients included in this study, 36 patients were hypo-responders and 25 patients were responders. Hemorrhagic events occurred 8.0% only in responders in the acute phase (p = 0.16), and 2.78% in hypo-responders and 20.0% in responders in the delayed phase (p = 0.037). Changes in hemoglobin levels before and after the procedure were 1.22 g/dl in hypo-responders and 1.74 g/dl in responders (p = 0.032) while before the procedure and chronic stages they were 0.39 g/dl in hypo-responders and 1.39 g/dl in responders (p <  0.01). Thrombotic events were not significantly different between the two groups. CONCLUSION: Long term use of DAPT after stent assisted coiling is related to hemorrhagic events in the delayed phase. Preventing for hemorrhagic events, the duration of DAPT should be carefully considered in clopidogrel responders.

RESUMO

Enterohemorrhagic Escherichia coli are a dangerous bacterium known to be harmful to the human body, with some infections even resulting in death. Given this danger, food factories are required to perform a quick bacterial test to confirm the absence of this pathogen prior to shipping. We have developed a novel molecular imprinting polymer (MIP) particle that has encapsulated gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) and which can function as both a receptor and an optical signal transmitter in biological systems. This MIP particle is artificially synthesized and can be engineered to specifically recognize and capture antigens on the bacterial cell membrane. In addition, MIP particles containing AuNPs generate strong scattered light signals, and binding of the MIP particles improves the optical intensity of the target bacterial cells. This enables clear visualization under a dark-field microscope and quantification of the target bacteria using the scattering light intensity. Here we describe the successful quantification of Escherichia coli O157 cells in real meat samples using this technology in conjunction with a simple labelling step.
