INTRODUCTION: Academic dental educators play a major role in training future dentists. They help students to develop medical knowledge and behavioural skills that improve the quality and rigor of their future practice. Therefore, their experience and knowledge are critical to ensure effective learning. However, a French national workshop revealed that most junior assistant professors lack educational skills at the beginning of their career. The aim of this study was to assess educational training needs of junior assistant professors in the Department of Conservative Dentistry and Endodontics. MATERIALS AND METHODS: An electronic survey was sent to junior assistant professors belonging to Departments of Conservative Dentistry and Endodontics within the 16 French dental schools in 2016. This survey was designed to collect data regarding their motivations, teaching expertise and interest in pedagogy. RESULTS: Sixty of the 69 junior educators turned in their answers, which represents a response rate of 87%. About 86.7% of respondents cited their attraction to teaching as one of the main reasons behind their application. The major difficulty encountered by junior faculty was related to course preparation. Only 15% had received educational training despite the fact that 98.3% were convinced of the usefulness of such a training for junior teachers. CONCLUSION: This study identified the motivations and difficulties encountered by junior assistant professors. This collection of educational needs should be considered when planning a national programme for educational training of dental faculty that will promote the acquisition of teaching skills and improve the education of dental students.

In adhesive restorations, one major problem is hybrid layer degradation. At present, this deterioration is explained by the activation of the endogenous matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs) present in dentin due to the acidic property of adhesive systems. We hypothesized that self-etching adhesive should also stimulate the expression of MMPs in odontoblasts. In cultured tooth slices, we evaluated the changes in MMP-2 and proMMP-9 expression in the dentin-pulp complex after self-etching adhesive treatment on dentin cavities in immunochemistry and by zymography. The treatment resulted in increased MMP-2 expression in odontoblasts, as shown by immunohistochemistry. Zymography showed increased proMMP-9 and MMP-2 in dentin under self-etching treatment when pulp was present. These results showed that self-etching adhesive stimulates the secretion of MMPs from the dentin-pulp complex and, more precisely, by odontoblasts, suggesting that odontoblasts participate in hybrid layer degradation.

RESUMO

To study the presence of L-type calcium channels during the different steps of odontoblast differentiation, a specific monoclonal antibody against 1,4-dihydropyridine receptors was used in combination with avidin-biotin-peroxidase complex labelling. Staining was seen on the cell bodies of pre-odontoblasts, concentrated at the apical pole (distal portion) of functional odontoblasts and localized on cell bodies and processes of mature odontoblasts. Thus calcium channels were expressed at the onset of differentiation and maintained in the differentiated cells but with some changes of localization. It is suggested that these channels may facilitate the entry of calcium to act as a second messenger for cellular polarization or be involved in the transcellular transport of calcium to the mineralizing front.

This study was designed to complete the cell culture test for the cytotoxicity assessment of dental material presented by Christen et al. (1989) and Regad et al. (1989). Two liner materials were selected for this experiment which had already been subjected to both in vivo and in vitro tests. After 2, 7 and 14 days of contact with the test materials, the cell responses were evaluated under the light microscope by their growth pattern and morphological aspects. Cell synthesis of fibronectin and type I and III collagen was studied by immunofluorescence. Surface appearance of the cells in contact with the materials as well as their structures were observed by scanning electron microscopy. This study confirmed the viability of the in vitro cytotoxicity assessment methods with cell cultures. The results also demonstrated the potentials of this method in the early screening of dental materials for their biological compatibility.

RESUMO

The cement produced microcrystals of calcite by reaction with culture medium supplemented with calf serum. Human dental pulp cells seeded on such a substrate preferentially adhered and aggregated around the microcrystals. Immunofluorescence and immunogold labelling revealed a high affinity of serum fibronectin molecules for the calcite crystals. At 4 weeks in culture, the cells had various features of differentiated odontoblasts, notably nuclear polarization, typical appearance of the Golgi apparatus, synthesis of type I collagen and absence of type III, and apical accumulation of actin and vimentin. These cells also elaborated a collagenous extracellular matrix which did not mineralize.
