RESUMO

This study uses fNIRS to determine whether there is a difference in the relationship between intra-individual variability and frontal lobe activity between ADHD patients and typically developing children. A total of 28 subjects (14 in ADHD patient group and 14 in control group) participated in this study. The subjects were tested for K-SADS and intelligence, and then the frontal lobe activity of the subjects was measured by continuous performance test, using functional near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRSIT). Processing speed index was significantly lower in the ADHD patient group than in the control group (p = .04). The CPT test results showed a positive correlation in the activity of the right dorsolateral prefrontal region in the patient group, but not at a statistically significant level. In the control group, activity showed a significant level of negative correlation with commission and hit reaction time standard deviation (p = .023; p = .063 respectively). In contrary to ADHD patient group, activation of the right dorsolateral prefrontal area was significantly correlated with reduction of intra-individual variability. This result showing that the relationship between activation of the right dorsolateral prefrontal area of the ADHD patient group and intra-individual variability shows a different pattern from typically developing children.

RESUMO

The deformation behavior and microstructure of 6061 aluminum alloy processed by severe plastic deformation (SPD) using biaxial alternate forging that can evaluate the forming limit and mechanical properties of alloys, simultaneously, were investigated in this study. A finite element (FE) analysis on the biaxial alternating forging process, considering the strain-hardening coefficient and forging pass of the material, was conducted. When the strain-hardening coefficient is 0, an average effective strain of 440% was found within a diameter of 4 mm in the core of the workpiece after eight passes, while it was 300% at the same pass number when the strain-hardening coefficient was 0.2. The average effective strain estimated from the FE analysis was about 264% after eight passes of forging, which is considered to be a level of SPD that significantly exceeds the elongation of the raw material. As a result of the tensile test according to the forging pass, after two passes, the strength of the material could be gradually improved without significant degradation of elongation. Even though a large strain of 264% was found after eight passes were applied, deformed grains and twins with no recrystallized structure in optical microstructures with different forging passes were found.

RESUMO

Workplace bullying is a prevalent issue with a significant impact on employees' mental health. This study aimed to explore the relationship between workplace bullying and the prevalence of depression, with a particular focus on the role of gender. A total of 12,344 Korean employees aged 19-65 years were included in the study. They completed the Center for Epidemiologic Studies Depression Scale (CES-D) and a score of 16 or higher in CES-D indicated depression. The association between workplace bullying and depression was analyzed using logistic regression analyses. The average CES-D scores were higher for both male and female employees who experienced bullying than for those who did not (p < 0.001). The association between the experience of workplace bullying and the prevalence of depression was statistically significant for both genders, with a stronger correlation observed among male employees (p for interaction < 0.001). Organizations are urged to address workplace bullying, particularly for male employees, through the implementation of anti-bullying strategies and policies, as well as the provision of mental health resources and support.

RESUMO

Introduction: It is uncertain whether burnout is associated with suicidal ideation among workers not in health care services. The aim of this study was to identify how burnout and suicidal ideation are linked among employees in various occupations and whether depression affects this link. Methods: This cross-sectional study collected data from 12,083 participants aged 19-65 years from 25 companies and public institutions who underwent workplace mental health screening. Burnout and depression were assessed using both the Oldenburg Burnout Inventory and the Center for Epidemiologic Studies Depression Scale. Suicidal ideation was assessed by a self-rated questionnaire from the Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey. Results: Exhaustion but not the cynicism dimension of burnout was associated with increased odds of suicidal ideation after adjustment for depression and other covariates (odds ratio [OR] = 1.47, 95% CI = 1.26-1.72). The association of exhaustion with suicidal ideation was significant in both depressed (OR = 1.36, 95% CI = 1.14-1.61) and not depressed (OR = 1.77, 95% CI = 1.13-2.76) participants. In exhausted participants, insufficient job control, an unfavorable occupational climate, low educational level, and depression were associated with increased odds of suicidal ideation. Conclusion: Exhaustion is linked with risk of suicidal ideation in employees not in health care service, regardless of depression status. Exhausted employees, particularly those having poor job resources, should be recognized as an at-risk group.

RESUMO

Ulcerative colitis (UC) is a chronic gastrointestinal disease whose incidence is increasing rapidly worldwide. Anti-inflammatory medications, including 5-aminosalicylic acid (5-ASA), corticosteroids, and immunosuppressants, are used for its treatment; however, new alternatives would be required due to the serious side effects of some of these medications. N-Acetylglucosamine (NAG) is an amino sugar composed of mucin that is secreted by intestinal epithelial cells. It is also used to promote the growth of intestinal bacteria. The current study aimed to determine the efficacy of NAG against dextran sulfate sodium (DSS)-induced chronic colitis and elucidate its mechanism of action. Mice were randomly divided into control, DSS, 0.1% sulfasalazine, 0.1% NAG, 0.3% NAG, and 0.3% NAG-dimer (NAG-D) groups, and results showed that colitis-induced body weight loss, disease activity, colonic tissue damage, colon length shortening, and the loss of mucin-secreting area were significantly improved in the NAG-D group. The intestinal permeability indicator, serum CD 14 level, and expression of the tight junction protein, occludin, were both improved in the 0.3% NAG group. Inflammatory biomarkers, including GATA3, IFN-γ, p-IκBα, COX2, TGF-ß1, and Smad7, were significantly lower in the 0.3% NAG and NAG-D groups than in the DSS group. The intestinal microbial composition was most significantly altered in the 0.3% NAG group, showing decreased ratios of pathogenic bacteria, such as Betaproteobacteria, especially Burkholderiales. The results overall suggested that NAG or NAG-D supplementation can alleviate inflammation by strengthening the intestinal barrier function and maintaining gut microbiota homeostasis in a DSS-induced colitis mouse model.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to identify the factors related to suicidal ideation targeting the risk group showing suicidal ideation despite the absence of depression in Korean workers. METHODS: The data of 14,425 participants who were employees aged of 18 to 75 years who attended a mental health checkup program at the Workplace Mental Health Institute, Kangbuk Samsung Hospital from June 2015 to October 2019 were analyzed. A self-report questionnaire consisting of sociodemographic factors, suicidal ideation, job stress, levels of depression and anxiety, and resilience was administered. A Hierarchical logistic regression model was used with suicidal ideation as dependent variable. Separate analyses were conducted according to depressive symptoms using the 20-item Center for Epidemiological Studies Depression (CES-D) scale. RESULTS: Being women, older, and having low resilience, more perceived stress, more severe anxiety and less sleeping hours were associated with suicidal ideation in no-depression group (CES-D <16). In the subcategories of job stress, lack of reward was significantly associated with suicidal ideation in no-depression group. CONCLUSION: This study identified the characteristics of a group that has no depression but has suicidal ideation in Korean workers. Among job stress items, lack of reward is a clear characteristic to be considered with caution in this group.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: The present study investigated an interpersonal model of development of depressive symptoms in employees, where occupational stress affects burnout, which in turn affects risk for depression, and whether this mediation is moderated by grit. METHODS: A total of 11,421 participants, aged 19 to 65 years, who were employees of 18 private companies and local government organizations in Korea were included. They completed questionnaires, including the Korean version of occupational stress scale, Oldenburg Burnout Inventory, Center for Epidemiologic Studies Depression scale and Grit scale. Mediation and moderation analyses were carried out in the Statistical Package for the Social Sciences PROCESS macro. RESULTS: The association between occupational stress and depressive symptoms was mediated by exhaustion (b = -0.256, 95 % CI [0.244, 0.268]) and disengagement (b = -0.052, 95 % CI [0.039, 0.065]). Moreover, the effect of exhaustion on depressive symptoms was moderated by each grit, with the effect being stronger for employees with low grit (b = 0.939, p < 0.001 for passion and b = 0.629, p < 0.001 for perseverance) than for those with high grit (b = 0.944, p < 0.001 for passion and b = 0.686, p < 0.001 for perseverance). LIMITATIONS: The cross-sectional design of the study does not allow causal inferences. CONCLUSIONS: These findings contribute to the understanding of how occupational stress predicts depressive symptoms in the workplace and provide practical implications for preventing burnout and nurturing grit to protect employees' mental health in the workplace.

RESUMO

AIMS: The discovery of antiviral substances to respond to COVID-19 is a global issue, including the field of drug development based on natural materials. Here, we showed that chitosan-based substances have natural antiviral properties against SARS-CoV-2 in vitro. METHODS AND RESULTS: The molecular weight of chitosan-based substances was measured by the gel permeation chromatography analysis. In MTT assay, the chitosan-based substances have low cytotoxicity to Vero cells. The antiviral effect of these substances was confirmed by quantitative viral RNA targeting the RdRp and E genes and plaque assay. Among the substances tested, low molecular weight chitooligosaccharide decreased the fluorescence intensity of SARS-CoV-2 nucleocapsid protein of the virus-infected cells in a dose-dependent manner. CONCLUSIONS: In conclusion, the chitooligosaccharide, a candidate for natural treatment, has antiviral effects against the SARS-CoV-2 virus in vitro. SIGNIFICANCE AND IMPACT OF STUDY: In this study, it was suggested for the first time that chitosan-based substances such as chitooligosaccharide can have an antiviral effect on SARS-CoV-2 in vitro.

RESUMO

We developed and evaluated an interpersonal model of depression in employees, where passion and perseverance affect occupational stress and perceived control, which in turn affect risk of depression. The participants were employees of 18 private companies and local government organizations in Korea aged 19 to 65 years. A total of 11,422 participants completed questionnaires including the Korean version of the Grit scale, the occupational stress scale, the perceived control subscale in the perceived stress scale, and the Center for Epidemiologic Studies Depression Scale. Mediation analysis was performed to determine relationships among trait-level passion and perseverance, work-related stress, perceived control, and depression. Passion and perseverance preceded depression in employees. Higher occupational stress and lower perceived control mediated the association between passion and depression, and between perseverance and depression. Passion and perseverance exert preventive effects on depression by decreasing workplace stress and elevating perceived control. Future studies should investigate the effects of psychological characteristics on the development of depression in employees.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: The risk of suicide is assessed by identifying the relationship between alcohol-use patterns and suicidal ideation in Korean employees. METHODS: The study involved 13,858 employees who underwent workplace mental health screening at the Workplace Mental Health Institute of Kangbuk Samsung Hospital over a 6-year period between 2014 and 2019. Analysis was performed separately for Alcohol Use Disorders Identification Test-Korea (AUDIT-K) items related to the frequency/volume of alcohol consumption (items 1 to 3, AUDIT-C) and those regarding alcohol dependence/related problems (items 4 to 10, AUDIT-D/P). Subjects were then classified into three groups on the basis of the presence or absence of clinical depression and suicidal ideation. The groups' sociodemographic factors and clinical features of depression, anxiety, and alcohol-use patterns were analyzed with a chi-square test as well as one-way analysis of variance, followed by a post hoc test using the Bonferroni correction. RESULTS: AUDIT-K and AUDIT-D/P scores were significantly associated with the presence or absence of clinical depression as well as the presence or absence of suicidal ideation (p<0.05). However, no significant differences were found among the three groups with regard to the AUDIT-C score (p=0.054). CONCLUSION: Identifying or treating alcohol dependence/related problems can help lower the occurrence of mental health problems, and suicidal ideation in particular, in employees and reduce social costs.

RESUMO

This study was performed to examine the elements that cause suicidal ideation to develop into a suicide attempt by comparing the factors related to suicidal ideation and attempt. The subjects in the study were 5982 employees, who received mental health screening from January 2016 to December 2019 in Korea. Multivariate binary logistic regression analysis was performed with suicidal ideation and suicide attempt as dependent variables respectively. While suicidal ideation was associated with both moderate and severe grades of depression and alcohol consumption, only severe grades of depression and alcohol consumption were associated with suicide attempts. Among family, interpersonal, work-related, and financial stress, which were significant predictors of suicidal ideation, only family stress predicted suicide attempts. Whereas dissatisfaction with the present, regret for the past, and hopelessness for the future were all predictors for suicidal ideation, only regret for the past was a significant predictor of suicide attempts. The distinctive impact of family stress on suicide attempts suggests that family support can play a pivotal role in suicide prevention, and the significant impact of regret for the past on suicide attempts indicates the need for a cognitive approach in a high-risk population. Finally, the substantial impact of alcohol on suicide attempts compared to suicidal ideation suggests the importance of alcohol regulation in suicide prevention.

RESUMO

Ancient traditions showed that fermented enzyme foods have beneficial health effects on the body. However, only a few studies have reported on its impact on weight loss and metabolic syndrome. Therefore, it is necessary to verify whether diet supplementation with fermented enzyme foods can have a beneficial functional impact on the body. We examined the antiobesity properties of fermented mixed grain (FMG) with digestive enzymes (FMG) in diet-induced obese mice. Sixty C57BL/6J mice were randomly assigned to six dietary groups: (1) normal diet (ND), (2) high-fat diet (HFD), (3) Bacilus Coagulans, (4) steamed grain, (5) low-dose FMG (L-FMG), and (6) high-dose FMG (H-FMG) supplement for 12 weeks. The results showed that H-FMG supplement dramatically decreased body weight and fat mass with simultaneous decreases in plasma lipid contents. Furthermore, H-FMG significantly lowered fasting blood glucose concentrations and improved glucose tolerance compared with the HFD group. Also, the concentrations of inflammatory cytokines secreted from adipocytes in H-FMG-supplemented mice decreased dramatically. Taken together, our findings indicated that H-FMG can ameliorate HFD-induced obesity and its associated complications and could be used as a potential preventive intervention for obesity.

RESUMO

AIMS: To evaluate the bidirectional relationship between blood pressure (BP) and depressive symptoms using a large prospective cohort study. METHODS: Prospective cohort study was performed in 276 244 adults who participated in a regular health check-up and were followed annually or biennially for up to 5.9 years. BP levels were categorised according to the 2017 American College of Cardiology and American Heart Association hypertension guidelines. Depressive symptoms were assessed using Centre for Epidemiologic Studies-Depression (CESD) questionnaire and a cut-off score of ≥25 was regarded as case-level depressive symptoms. RESULTS: During 672 603.3 person-years of follow-up, 5222 participants developed case-level depressive symptoms. The multivariable-adjusted hazard ratios (HRs) [95% confidence interval (CI)] for incident case-level depressive symptoms comparing hypotension, elevated BP, hypertension stage 1 and hypertension stage 2 to normal BP were 1.07 (0.99-1.16), 0.93 (0.82-1.05), 0.89 (0.81-0.97) and 0.81 (0.62-1.06), respectively (p for trend <0.001). During 583 615.3 person-years of follow-up, 27 787 participants developed hypertension. The multivariable-adjusted HRs (95% CI) for incident hypertension comparing CESD 16-24 and ⩾25 to CESD < 16 were 1.05 (1.01-1.11) and 1.12 (1.03-1.20), respectively (p for trend <0.001) and in the time-dependent models, corresponding HRs (95% CI) were 1.12 (1.02-1.24) and 1.29 (1.10-1.50), respectively (p for trend <0.001). CONCLUSIONS: In this large cohort study of young and middle-aged individuals, higher BP levels were independently associated with a decreased risk for developing case-level depressive symptoms and depressive symptoms were also associated with incident hypertension. Further studies are required to elucidate the mechanisms underlying the bidirectional association between BP levels and incident depression.

RESUMO

Excessive alcohol consumption induces acute intoxication and various hepatic diseases. In this study, we investigated the effect of the CureZyme-ACE (CA), Acetobacter Pasteurianus (AP)-derived product, in acute intoxication rats. The ethanol and acetaldehyde levels of serum were lower in rats treated with CA than those who only treated ethanol. The activities of alcohol dehydrogenase and acetaldehyde dehydrogenase also recovered faster in the CA group than only-ethanol group. The transaminase levels (AST, ALT) in the CA group were significantly lower than only-ethanol group. In addition, Hepatic histological analyses and stomach wall were demonstrated that the CA-treated group recovered faster than only-ethanol group. With regard to most characteristics, we found that CA had dose-dependent effects. At high concentrations of CA, there were no differences in the tested parameters compared to those of normal rats. These findings indicate that CA reduces the serum alcohol concentration and some of the hepatic damage caused by alcohol intoxication.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVES: Vitamin D deficiency has been reported to be associated with various neuropsychiatric disorders. However, there are few studies addressing deficient vitamin D levels and suicidal ideation. METHODS: Serum vitamin D of 157,211 Korean adult participants were measured using electrochemiluminescence immunoassay. A self-reported questionnaire was used to assess whether participants experienced suicidal ideation. Logistic regression model was used to estimate the odds ratio (OR) of suicidal ideation according to vitamin D levels. The regression was adjusted for a range of covariates. RESULTS: Compared with sufficient vitamin D levels (≥20 ng/mL), deficient vitamin D levels (<10 ng/mL) were significantly associated with the risk of suicidal ideation (OR = 1.138, 95% Cl = 1.027-1.262). However, the OR of suicidal ideation was not significantly different between the vitamin D insufficient group (10-19.99 ng/mL) and sufficient group (≥20 ng/mL) (OR = 0.988, 95% Cl = 0.932-1.047). CONCLUSION: Deficient vitamin D levels were significantly associated with the risk of suicidal ideation. However, the risk of suicidal ideation was not significantly different between the vitamin D insufficient group and sufficient group.

RESUMO

The aim of this study is to identify occupational stress associated with the development of new-onset anxiety symptoms and the dose-response relationship between sleep duration and the onset of anxiety symptoms. Data from 29,251 healthy employees who had undergone at least two comprehensive health examinations at Kangbuk Samsung Hospital Health Screening Center were analysed. Anxiety symptoms were assessed using the Beck Anxiety Inventory. Occupational stress and sleep duration were measured using a self-reported questionnaire about total sleep time and the Korean Occupational Stress Scale-Short Form (KOSS-SF), respectively. Flexible parametric proportional hazards model used to estimate the hazard ratios. Compared with the groups without case-level anxiety, discomfort in an organizational climate, high job demands, job insecurity, organizational injustice and lack of reward were associated with the onset of case-level anxiety. Compared with less than 6 hr of sleep per day, the beneficial level of sleep duration was 7 ≤ to <9 hr a day. Almost all subscales of job stress were associated with the development of anxiety symptoms. In addition, the efficacious level of sleep duration for reducing the onset of future anxiety symptoms was 7 ≤ to <9 hr a day.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: The aim of study is to investigate the relationship between serum vitamin D, c-reactive protein (CRP) levels, and anxiety symptoms. METHODS: Serum vitamin D and CRP levels of 51,003 Korean adult participants were collected retrospectively. Anxiety symptoms were assessed using the Korean version of Beck Anxiety Inventory. Logistic regression was used to estimate the odds ratio (ORs) of anxiety symptoms by serum vitamin D and CRP levels. The regression was adjusted for covariates, and each model was adjusted mutually for vitamin D and CRP levels. RESULTS: Compared with sufficient vitamin D levels (≥20 ng/mL), insufficient (10-19.99 ng/mL) and deficient (<10 ng/mL) vitamin D levels were significantly associated with risk of anxiety symptoms. Also, continuous vitamin D levels were negatively associated with the risk of anxiety symptoms. CRP levels did not affect the relationship between vitamin D levels and risk of anxiety symptoms. CONCLUSION: Insufficient (10-19.99 ng/mL) and deficient (<10 ng/mL) vitamin D levels were significantly associated with risk of anxiety symptoms. After adjusting for CRP levels, the results were not changed, and no evidence of interaction between vitamin D and CRP levels was found. CRP levels did not account for the association between vitamin D levels and risk of anxiety symptoms.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVES: The Korean Medication Algorithm Project for Bipolar Disorder (KMAP-BP) is based on expert consensus and has been revised five times since 2002. This study evaluated the changes in treatment strategies advocated by the KMAP-BP over time. METHODS: The five editions of the KMAP-BP were reviewed, and the recommendations of the KMAP-BP were compared with those of other bipolar disorder (BP) treatment guidelines. RESULTS: The most preferred option for the initial treatment of mania was a combination of a mood stabilizer (MS) and an atypical antipsychotic (AAP). Either MS or AAP monotherapy was also considered a first-line strategy for mania, but not for all types of episodes, including mixed/psychotic mania. In general, although lithium and valproic acid were commonly recommended, valproic acid has been increasingly preferred for all phases of BP. The most notable changes over time included the increasing preference for AAPs for all phases of BP, and lamotrigine for the depressive and maintenance phases. The use of antidepressants for BP has gradually decreased, but still represents a first-line option for severe and psychotic depression. CONCLUSIONS: In general, the recommended strategies of the KMAP-BP were similar to those of other guidelines, but differed in terms of the emphasis on rapid effectiveness, which is often desirable in actual clinical situations. The major limitation of the KMAP-BP is that it is a consensus-based rather than an evidence-based tool. Nevertheless, it may confer advantages in actual clinical practice.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Maintaining adequate levels of sleep and physical activity (PA) as self-help for the prevention of new-onset anxiety symptoms is becoming more important. METHODS: A cohort study was performed with 134,957 adults, free of anxiety symptoms at baseline who underwent at least two comprehensive health screening examinations between 2012 and 2017. At baseline, the amount of PA was measured using the International Physical Activity Questionnaire-Short Form and sleep duration per day was assessed using a self-report questionnaire. The study's end point was new-onset anxiety symptoms, defined as a Beck Anxiety Inventory score of ≥19. RESULTS: During 361,969 person-years of follow-up, 5086 participants developed case-level anxiety. Compared with a reference (0-600 METs-min/wk), a U-shaped relationship was observed between PA and case-level anxiety. The most beneficial levels of PA for reducing incident anxiety symptoms were higher in men than women (men: 1800-3000 METs-min/wk HR, 0.88 [95% CI, 0.78-0.81], 3000-6000 METs-min/wk HR, 0.81 [95% CI, 0.70-0.93]; women: 600-1,200 METs-min/wk HR, 0.86 [95% CI, 0.76-0.98]). In comparison with a reference (<6 h), the relationship between sleep duration and case-level anxiety also had a U-shaped pattern. The optimal sleep duration for decreasing the onset of case-level anxiety was 7-8 h, regardless of sex (men: HR, 0.75 [95% CI, 0.63-0.90]; women; HR, 0.61 [95% CI, 0.54-0.70]). LIMITATIONS: PA, sleep duration, and anxiety symptoms were measured using self-report questionnaires. CONCLUSIONS: The results of this study revealed the appropriate levels of PA and total sleep time for reducing incident anxiety symptoms.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to investigate resilience as a protective factor for suicidality among Korean workers. METHODS: Participants were workers from 26 organizations in Korea, aged 18 to 63 years, who completed a self-reported questionnaire comprising items on sociodemographic factors, job stress, resilience, and suicidality. Completed questionnaires were collected from 4,405 persons, with 4,389 valid responses. Hierarchical logistic regression analyses were performed using suicidality as the dependent variable. RESULTS: Results of the logistic regression analyses indicated that among the sociodemographic factors, older age, being female, and being single were statistically significantly associated with suicidal ideation. A high level of job stress, depressive mood, and anxiety, in addition to a short job duration, were also associated with suicidal ideation. Resilience was a significant protective factor for suicidal ideation after adjusting for all other variables. Older age and high anxiety levels were associated with having a suicide plan among participants with suicidal ideation. The association of resilience with suicide plans and suicide attempts was non-significant. CONCLUSION: In this study, we found that a high level of resilience was associated with a low incidence of suicidal ideation in Korean workers. Based on these results, we suggest the need to develop and implement interventions to improve resilience in the workplace, thereby protecting workers, especially those with a high level of work stress, from suicidal ideation.
