Food protein carriers from different sources might have distinct stabilizing and enhancing effects on the same small molecule. To elucidate the molecular mechanism, five different sourced proteins including soy protein isolates (SPIs), whey protein isolates (WPIs), edible dock protein (EDP), Tenebrio molitor protein (TMP), and yeast protein (YP) were used to prepare protein hydrogels for delivering myricetin (Myr). The results suggested that the loading capacity order of Myr in different protein hydrogels was EDP (11.5%) > WPI (9.3%) > TMP (8.9%) > YP (8.0%) > SPI (7.6%), which was consistent with the sequence of binding affinity between Myr and different proteins. Among five protein hydrogels, EDP had an optimum loading ability since it possessed the highest hydrophobic amino acid content (45.52%) and thus provided a broad hydrophobic cavity for loading Myr. In addition, these protein-Myr composite hydrogels displayed the core-shell structure, wherein hydrogen bonding and hydrophobic interaction were the primary binding forces between proteins and Myr. Moreover, the thermal stability, storage stability, and sustained-release properties of Myr were significantly enhanced via these protein delivery systems. These findings can provide scientific guidance for deeper utilization of food alternative protein sources.

Purpose: There has been limited evidence for the association between pulse pressure (PP) and proteinuria in prediabetes. The aim of our study was to explore the association between PP and albuminuria in community-dwelling Chinese adults with prediabetes. Materials and Methods: PP and urinary albumin-to-creatinine ratio (ACR) were measured in 2012 prediabetic patients and 3596 control subjects with normal glucose tolerance. Multivariate logistic regression models were used to evaluate the possible association of PP with the risk of presence of albuminuria. Results: PP was positively associated with the presence of albuminuria, and subjects in the higher PP quartiles had higher urinary ACR and presence of albuminuria as compared with those in the lowest quartile in both prediabetes and control groups (all P < 0.01). Multivariate logistic regression analysis demonstrated that the highest PP quartile was positively associated with increased risk of presence of albuminuria in all prediabetic subjects [odds ratio (OR): 2.289, 95% confidence interval (CI) 1.364-3.842, P < 0.01) and prediabetic subjects without anti-hypertensive drugs (OR: 1.932, 95% CI 1.116-3.343, P < 0.01), whereas higher PP quartile has nothing to do with the risk of presence of albuminuria in control subjects with and without anti-hypertensive drugs after adjustment for potential confounders (all P > 0.01). Consistently, stratified analysis showed that in the prediabetes group, the risks of presence of albuminuria progressively elevated with increasing PP quartiles in men, those aged 60 years or older, and with overweight/obesity, normal high-density lipoprotein cholesterol, and appropriate low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (all P for trend <0.05). Conclusion: Higher PP is independently related to increased risk of presence of albuminuria in community-dwelling Chinese adults with prediabetes.

In this study, galangin (Gal), kaempferol (Kae), quercetin (Que), and myricetin (Myr) were chosen as the representative flavonoids with different phenolic hydroxyl numbers in the B-ring. The edible dock protein (EDP) was chosen as the new plant protein. Based on this, the regulation mechanism of the phenolic hydroxyl number on the self-assembly behavior and molecular interaction between EDP and flavonoid components were investigated. Results indicated that the loading capacity order of flavonoids within the EDP nanomicelles was Myr (10.92%) > Que (9.56%) > Kae (6.63%) > Gal (5.55%). Moreover, this order was consistent with the order of the hydroxyl number in the flavonoid's B ring: Myr (3) > Que (2) > Kae (1) > Gal (0). The micro morphology exhibited that four flavonoid-EDP nanomicelles had a core-shell structure. In the meantime, the EDP encapsulation remarkably improved the flavonoids' water solubility, storage stability, and sustained release characteristics. During the interaction of EDP and flavonoids, the noncovalent interactions including van der Waals forces, hydrophobic interaction, and hydrogen bonding were the main binding forces. All of the results demonstrated that the hydroxyl number of bioactive compounds is a critical factor for developing a delivery system with high loading ability and stability.

To understand the distribution characteristics and restoration status of vegetation at Sanxingdui City Wall, we sampled five typical communities of the city wall at the Sanxingdui site and explored the stability and niche characteristics of herbaceous plant communities under different maintenance measures (natural regeneration, planting, abandoned field, shrub removal, and pruning) following the niche theory and the improved contribution law method. A total of 87 herbaceous species belonging to 73 genera and 31 families were recorded. Compositae and Gramineae were dominant, and perennial herbs were the majority. There were differences in the niche breadth of major herbaceous species under different maintenance measures. The niche breadth of annual plants was higher under natural regeneration and shrub removal, and that of perennial plants was higher under planting, abandoned field, and pruning measures. The niche overlap and similarity of herbaceous plants were higher under natural regene-ration, shrub removal and pruning measures, and were the lowest under planting measure. The importance values were positively correlated with the niche breadth, but the ranking was not completely consistent. Species with higher niche breadth usually had higher probability of niche overlap and higher niche similarity. Combined with the M-Godron's stability analysis, community stability was comparable among shrub removal, pruning, and natural regeneration measures whereas the abandoned field and planting showed lower community stability. We recommended the implementation of in situ conservation measures based on natural regeneration, supplemented by scientific artificial maintenance (shrub removal, pruning, etc.) when necessary, so as to achieve a stable species composition and promote the sustainable development and vegetation landscape restoration at Sanxingdui City Wall.

In this study, chrysin (Chr), baicalein (Bai), apigenin (Api) and galangin (Gal) were selected as the representative flavonoids with different position of phenolic hydroxyl groups, and edible dock protein (EDP) was used as a material to construct delivery system. Subsequently, the molecular interactions and functional properties of flavonoids-loaded EDP nanomicelles were investigated. Results exhibited that hydrogen bond, hydrophobic interaction and van der Waals force were the main driving forces for self-assembly of flavonoids and EDP molecules. Meanwhile, this self-assembly remarkably enhance the storage and digestion stability of flavonoid compounds. Among four flavonoids, the order of loading ability was: Api > Gal > Bai > Chr. Herein, Api had a largest loading capacity (6.74%) because of its active phenolic hydroxyl group in ring B. These results suggested that the position of phenolic hydroxyl groups in flavonoids is a key factor to regulate its self-assembly with protein molecules.

Objective: Despite previous research that focused on aspartate aminotransferase/alanine aminotransferase ratio (AAR) as predictors of type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) and cardiovascular disease, there has been limited research evaluating the association between AAR and diabetic microvascular complications. This study aimed to investigate the association of AAR with diabetic peripheral neuropathy (DPN). Methods: A total of 1562 hospitalized patients with T2DM were divided into four groups according to AAR quartiles. The relationship between AAR and DPN and related parameters was explored by the Spearman correlation coefficients, multivariable logistic regression analysis, and receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curves. Results: Patients with higher AAR quartiles had higher levels of vibration perception threshold (VPT) and presence of DPN, and AAR was positively associated with VPT and presence of DPN independent of sex, age, body mass index, and diabetic duration (P<0.01 or P<0.05). Moreover, AAR remained significantly associated with a higher odds ratio (OR) of DPN (OR 2.413, 95% confidence interval [CI] 1.081-5.386, P<0.05) after multivariate adjustment. Additionally, the risk of presence of DPN increased progressively as AAR quartiles increased (all P for trend <0.01) in both male and female subjects, and the highest quartile of AAR of male and female subjects was respectively associated with 107.3% (95% CI: 1.386-3.101; P<0.01) and 136.8% (95% CI: 1.550-3.618; P<0.01) increased odds of DPN compared with the lower quartiles. Last, the analysis of receiver operating characteristic curves revealed that the best cutoff values for AAR to predict the presence of DPN were 0.906 (sensitivity: 70.3%; specificity: 49.2%; and area under the curve [AUC]: 0.618) and 1.402 (sensitivity: 38%; specificity: 81.9%; and AUC: 0.600) in male and female subjects, respectively. Conclusions: These findings suggest that the high AAR may be associated with the presence of DPN in Chinese patients with T2DM, and may be used as an additional indicator of risk of DPN.

Plant lipid transfer proteins (LTPs) play essential roles in various biological processes, including anther and pollen development, vegetative organ development, seed development and germination, and stress response, but the research progress varies greatly among Arabidopsis, rice and maize. Here, we presented a preliminary introduction and characterization of the whole 65 LTP genes in maize, and performed a phylogenetic tree and gene ontology analysis of the LTP family members in maize. We compared the research progresses of the reported LTP genes involved in male fertility and other biological processes in Arabidopsis and rice, and thus provided some implications for their maize orthologs, which will provide useful clues for the investigation of LTP transporters in maize. We predicted the functions of LTP genes based on bioinformatic analyses of their spatiotemporal expression patterns by using RNA-seq and qRT-PCR assays. Finally, we discussed the advances and challenges in substrate identification of plant LTPs, and presented the future research directions of LTPs in plants. This study provides a basic framework for functional research and the potential application of LTPs in multiple plants, especially for male sterility research and application in maize.

Objective: There is preliminary evidence that visceral fat area (VFA) was associated with the presence of type 2 diabetic peripheral neuropathy (DPN) in the Korean population; however, no studies have reported the association in Chinese population. The purpose of this study was to explore the possible correlation of VFA with DPN in such a population. Methods: A total of 2498 hospitalized patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) undergone VFA measurement, and were divided into DPN group (n=900) and non-DPN group (n=1594). The association of VFA with the presence of DPN was evaluated by correlation and multiple logistic regression analyses, generalized additive model with a smooth curve fitting, and receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve analysis. Results: The VFA was significantly lower in the DPN group than in the non-DPN group (P < 0.001). VFA was significantly and positively associated with sural nerve conduction velocity (SNCV) and amplitude potential (SNAP) and negatively associated with the presence of DPN (all P< 0.001); there was no significant difference in the curve fitting (P = 0.344). Multivariate logistic regression analysis showed that the risk of presence of DPN decreased progressively across the VFA quartiles (P for trend < 0.001) and was significantly lower in patients in the highest VFA quartile than in those in the lowest quartile (OR: 0.382, 95% CI 0.151-0.968, P< 0.001) after multivariate adjustment. The ROC analysis revealed that the best cut-off value of VFA for predicting the presence of DPN was 50.5cm2 (sensitivity 84.40%; specificity 34.00%). Conclusion: These results suggest that lower VFA level may be associated with increased risk of the presence of DPN in T2DM patients.

ATP-binding cassette subfamily G (ABCG) transporters are extensive in plants and play essential roles in various processes influencing plant fitness, but the research progress varies greatly among Arabidopsis, rice and maize. In this review, we present a consolidated nomenclature and characterization of the whole 51 ABCG transporters in maize, perform a phylogenetic analysis and classification of the ABCG subfamily members in maize, and summarize the latest research advances in ABCG transporters for these three plant species. ABCG transporters are involved in diverse processes in Arabidopsis and rice, such as anther and pollen development, vegetative and female organ development, abiotic and biotic stress response, and phytohormone transport, which provide useful clues for the functional investigation of ABCG transporters in maize. Finally, we discuss the current challenges and future perspectives for the identification and mechanism analysis of substrates for plant ABCG transporters. This review provides a basic framework for functional research and the potential application of ABCG transporters in multiple plants, including maize.

Aeromonas hydrophila is a common pathogen in fish that has caused severe economic losses in aquaculture worldwide. With the emergence of bacterial resistance, it is necessary to develop new drugs to combat bacterial infection, particularly for multidrug-resistant bacteria. In this study, the antibacterial activity of pinocembrin was investigated by observing bacterial growth and microscopic structure, and its mechanism of action was identified by investigating its effect on protein and DNA. The antibacterial susceptibility test indicated that pinocembrin inhibits A. hydrophila growth. The minimal inhibitory concentration and minimum bactericidal concentration were 256 μg/mL and 512 μg/mL, respectively. Ultrastructurally, the bacteria treated with pinocembrin showed surface roughness and plasmolysis. When bacteria were treated with 512 μg/mL pinocembrin, lactate dehydrogenase activity and soluble protein content decreased significantly, and electrical conductivity and DNA exosmosis levels increased by 4.21 ± 0.64% and 15.98 ± 1.93 mg/L, respectively. Staining with 4′, 6-Diamidino-2-phenylindole showed that the nucleic acid fluorescence intensity and density decreased after the treatment with pinocembrin. Pinocembrin may inhibit the growth of A. hydrophila by increasing cell membrane permeability and affecting protein and DNA metabolism. Thus, pinocembrin is a candidate drug for the treatment of A. hydrophila infection in aquaculture.(AU)

BACKGROUND: Limited studies regarding the correlation of lipid accumulation product (LAP) with a decreased estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) have yielded conflicting findings, and no report has demonstrated the relationship of LAP with chronic kidney disease (CKD), defined as the presence of albuminuria and/or a decreased eGFR. The purpose of this study was to estimate the possible correlation of LAP with CKD prevalence in Chinese community adults. METHOD: In this cross-sectional study, LAP level of 7202 participants (age ≥ 40 years) was determined, and its possible association with CKD was evaluated by a multiple logistic regression model. RESULTS: Compared with subjects with non-CKD, non-albuminuria, and high eGFR, LAP levels significantly increased in female not male subjects with CKD, albuminuria, and low eGFR, respectively (all P < 0.001). The univariate logistic regression analysis revealed that LAP level of female not male subjects were significantly and positively associated with the prevalence of CKD (P < 0.001). The multivariate logistic regression analysis showed that the risk of CKD prevalence in female not male subjects progressively increased across LAP quartiles (P for trend < 0.01), and the risk of CKD prevalence of subjects in Q4 significantly increased compared to those in Q1 after adjustment for potential confounding factors in Models 4 (odds ratio [OR]: 1.382, 95% confidence intervals [CI] 1.002-1.906, P < 0.05). Stratified analysis revealed positive associations of LAP quartiles with risk of CKD prevalence in people with the following characteristics: women, older, overweight, with hypertension, normal glucose tolerance, appropriate low-density lipoprotein cholesterol, nonsmokers, nondrinkers, and no cardiovascular disease events. CONCLUSIONS: High LAP levels might be significantly associated with risk of CKD prevalence in community-dwelling Chinese female adults, which may inform both public health recommendations and clinical practice.

BACKGROUND: Previous studies that explored the relationship of serum albumin with diabetic peripheral neuropathy (DPN) have indicated inconsistent results. Thus, the present study aimed to evaluated the association between serum albumin and DPN, defined as vibration perception threshold (VPT) values ≥ 25 V and/or inability to feel the monofilament, in Chinese patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). METHODS: 1465 T2DM patients aged ≥ 16 years, who completed the measurement of serum albumin and DPN screening between 2012 and 2015, were included in the cross-sectional study. Correlation and multivariate logistic regression analysis models were used to evaluate the possible relationship between serum albumin and DPN. RESULTS: Patients with higher quartiles of serum albumin had significantly lower VPT values and prevalence of DPN compared with those with lower quartiles (P for trend < 0.01), and there was an inverse relationship between serum albumin and VPT values and prevalence of DPN (all P < 0.01). Multivariate logistic regression analysis demonstrated that the risk of DPN was progressively decreased across serum albumin quartiles (P for trend < 0.01), and participants in the highest quartile of serum albumin were at a significantly decreased risk of DPN compared to those in the lowest quartile (odds rate: 0.311, 95% confidence intervals 0.134-0.724, P < 0.01). ROC analysis revealed that the optimal cutoff point of serum albumin for the prevalence of DPN was 39.95 g/L in patients with T2DM, with a sensitivity of 65.88% and a specificity of 66.7%. CONCLUSIONS: Decreased levels of serum albumin might be correlated with increased risk of DPN in Chinese patients with T2DM. Future longitudinal studies with large samples are warranted to confirm our findings, and elucidate putative mechanisms for the association.

PURPOSE: Bile acids, amphipathic cholesterol metabolites, have been reported to have cytoprotective and neuroprotective effects in humans and animal models. The relationship of physiological serum total bile acid (TBA) levels with diabetic peripheral neuropathy (DPN), however, has not been determined. The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship between physiological serum TBA and DPN. PATIENTS AND METHODS: In total, 856 patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) aged 20-89 years were enrolled in this cross-sectional study. Serum TBA was measured, and its relationship with DPN and other parameters was analyzed. RESULTS: T2DM patients with DPN had significantly lower serum TBA compared with those without (P<0.01). Serum TBA was negatively associated with glycated hemoglobin A1C, plateletcrit, fibrinogen, urine albumin-to-creatinine ratio, vibration perception thresholds, and prevalence of DPN, peripheral arterial disease, and diabetic foot ulceration after adjustment for age, sex, and body mass index (P<0.01 or P<0.05). A graded association with prevalence of DPN and increase in serum TBA quartiles was observed (P for trend <0.01), and there was an 48.2% decreased risk of DPN in the highest quartile of serum TBA versus the lowest quartile (95% CI 0.299-0.617; P=0.000) after multivariate adjustment. Receiver-operating characteristic analysis revealed that the optimal cutoff point of serum TBA to indicate DPN was 2.85 µmol/L (sensitivity 77.6% and specificity 45.6%). CONCLUSION: These findings suggest that lower physiological serum TBA level may be associated with the prevalence of DPN in T2DM patients and may be a potential biomarker for DPN.

AIMS: Limited data regarding the association between remnant cholesterol (RC) and chronic kidney disease (CKD), largely based on an estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) of < 60 mL/min/1.73 m2 (low eGFR), have yielded inconsistent results, and no report has demonstrated the relationship of RC with CKD [defined as low eGFR and/or albuminuria (defined as urinary albumin-to-creatinine ratio (ACR) ≥ 30 mg/g)] in Chinese general middle-aged and elderly population. Hence, we aimed to investigate the association between RC and CKD in such population. METHODS: In total, 7356 Chinese participants aged ≥ 40 years were recruited from five regional communities in Luzhou city between May 2011 and December 2011. Fasting RC was calculated from the lipid profile measured by standard laboratory procedures. Multivariate logistic regression models were used to evaluate the possible association between RC and CKD. RESULTS: Participants in the highest quartile of RC had higher body mass index, systolic and diastolic blood pressure, total cholesterol, triglyceride, low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C), fasting and 2-h postload blood glucose, glycated hemoglobin A1C, prevalence of prediabetes, type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM), hypertension, CKD, albuminuria, low eGFR, and lower high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C) and eGFR compared with those in the lowest quartile (all P for trend < 0.01). Multivariate logistic regression analysis demonstrated that the risk of CKD gradually increased across RC quartiles (P for trend < 0.01), and participants in the highest quartile of RC were at a significantly increased risk of prevalent CKD compared to those in the lowest quartile in total subjects (odds rate: 1.344, 95% confidence intervals 1.097-1.648, P < 0.01). In subgroup analysis, significant relation between RC level and increased risk of prevalent CKD was detected in women, subjects with overweight/obesity, non-prediabetes, hypertension, normal HDL-C, appropriate and high LDL-C, and without cardiovascular disease (CVD) events after multiple adjustments. CONCLUSIONS: Higher RC is independently associated with increased risk of prevalent CKD, and RC might serve as a new risk biomarker for CKD in a general middle-aged and elderly Chinese population, especially in women, subjects with overweight/obesity, non-prediabetes, hypertension, normal HDL-C, appropriate and high LDL-C, and without CVD events.

Using a simple liquid-liquid extraction (LLE) procedure for sample pretreatment, 7-Aminoflunitrazepam (7-aminoFM2), a major metabolite of flunitrazepam (FM2), was determined in urine samples by polymeric monolith-based capillary liquid chromatography coupled to tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS). The linearity was found in the range of 0.1-50ngmL-1 with a method detection limit (signal-to-noise ratio of 3) estimated at 0.05ngmL-1. Using the proposed method, good precision and recovery were also found in spiked urine samples at the levels of 0.5, 5.0, and 50ngmL-1 (intra-day/inter-day precision: 0.6-1.8% / 0.1-0.8%; post-spiked/pre-spiked recovery: 95.4-102.9% / 96.3-102.5%). In addition, acceptable relative differences (-24.2 - 0.8%) were observed by analyzing clinical urine samples using this monolith-based capillary LC-MS/MS method compared with the results obtained by the routine GC-MC method. Using the monolithic column, no noticeable deterioration of separation efficiency or carry-over was observed for more than 200 injections of urine samples. The applicability of the developed monolith-based capillary LC-MS/MS method was demonstrated by quantifying 7-aminoFM2 in various clinical urine samples. Based on these experimental results, the proposed LLE-monolith-based capillary LC-MS/MS method shows the potential for routine determination of drug metabolites in human urine for clinical and forensic applications.

In this study, recently developed 1,6-hexanediol ethoxylate diacrylate (HEDA)-based polymeric monoliths were utilized as sorbents for efficient extraction of phenylurea herbicides (PUHs) from water samples. The HEDA-based monolithic sorbents were prepared in a fused silica capillary (0.7mm i.d., 4.5-cm long) for polymer monolith microextraction (PMME). The experimental parameters of PMME microextraction including sample loading speed, pH of sample solution, composition of elution solvent, and addition of salt were optimized to efficiently extract PUHs from environmental water samples. The extracted PUHs were determined using ultra-high performance liquid chromatography (UHPLC) with UV-photodiode array detection. The extraction recoveries for PUHs-spiked water samples were 91.1-108.1% with relative standard deviations lower than 5%. The linearity range was 0.025-25ngmL(-1) for each PUH and the detection limits of PUHs were estimated at 0.006-0.019ng mL(-1). In addition, good intra-day/inter-day precision (0.1-8.7%/0.2-8.9%) and accuracy (92.0-108.0%/96.5-105.2%) of the proposed method were obtained. The extraction capacity of the monolith-filled capillary was also determined to be approximately 1µg. Moreover, each monolith-filled capillary could be reused up to 8 times without carry-over. According to the European Union regulations, the allowed permissible limit of any single herbicide in drinking water is 0.1ng mL(-1). This permissible level fell in the linear range examined in this study. In addition, the proposed method provided detection limits lower than the allowed permissible level, which demonstrated the feasibility of utilizing the HEDA-based monolithic sorbent to perform PMME for determining contaminants, such as PUHs, in environmental application.

In this study, methacrylic acid (MAA) was incorporated with alkyl methacrylates to increase the hydrophilicity of the synthesized ethylene dimethacrylate-based (EDMA-based) monoliths for separating polar small molecules by capillary LC analysis. Different alkyl methacrylate-MAA ratios were investigated to prepare a series of 30% alkyl methacrylate-MAA-EDMA monoliths in fused-silica capillaries (250-µm i.d.). The porosity, permeability, and column efficiency of the synthesized MAA-incorporated monolithic columns were characterized. A mixture of phenol derivatives is employed to evaluate the applicability of using the prepared monolithic columns for separating small molecules. Fast separation of six phenol derivatives was achieved in 5 min with gradient elution using the selected poly(lauryl methacrylate-co-MAA-co-EDMA) monolithic column. In addition, the effect of acetonitrile content in mobile phase on retention factor and plate height as well as the plate height-flow velocity curves were also investigated to further examine the performance of the selected poly(lauryl methacrylate-co-MAA-co-EDMA) monolithic column. Moreover, the applicability of prepared polymer-based monolithic column for potential food safety applications was also demonstrated by analyzing five aflatoxins and three phenicol antibiotics using the selected poly(lauryl methacrylate-co-MAA-co-EDMA) monolithic column.

BACKGROUND: Astrocytes do not only maintain homeostasis of the extracellular milieu of the neurons, but also play an active role in modulating synaptic transmission. Palmitic acid (PA) is a saturated fatty acid which, when being excessive, is a significant risk factor for lipotoxicity. Activation of astrocytes by PA has been shown to cause neuronal inflammation and demyelination. However, direct damage by PA to astrocytes is relatively unexplored. The aim of this study was to identify the mechanism(s) of PA-induced cytotoxicity in rat cortical astrocytes and possible protection by (+)-catechin. METHODS: Cytotoxicity and endoplasmic reticulum (ER) markers were assessed by MTT assay and Western blotting, respectively. Cytosolic Ca(2+) and mitochondrial membrane potential (MMP) were measured microfluorimetrically using fura-2 and rhodamine 123, respectively. Intracellular reactive oxygen species (ROS) production was assayed by the indicator 2'-7'-dichlorodihydrofluorescein diacetate. RESULTS: Exposure of astrocytes to 100µM PA for 24h resulted in apoptotic cell death. Whilst PA-induced cell death appeared to be unrelated to ER stress and perturbation in cytosolic Ca(2+) signaling, it was likely a result of ROS production and subsequent MMP collapse, since ascorbic acid (anti-oxidant, 100µM) prevented PA-induced MMP collapse and cell death. Co-treatment of astrocytes with (+)-catechin (300µM), an anti-oxidant found abundantly in green tea, significantly prevented PA-induced ROS production, MMP collapse and cell death. CONCLUSION: Our results suggest that PA-induced cytotoxicity in astrocytes may involve ROS generation and MMP collapse, which can be prevented by (+)-catechin.

Due to the high porosity, good thermal stability, and good physical stability at high pressure, polymer monoliths have been successfully utilized as the stationary phases for capillary liquid chromatography (LC) analysis. In this study, we introduced 1,6-hexanediol ethoxylate diacrylate (HEDA) as a cross-linker to prepare alkyl methacrylate monoliths for efficient separation of polar small molecules. HEDA provided additional dipole-dipole interactions between the monolithic stationary phases and polar analytes. For comparison, ethylene dimethacrylate and 1,6-hexanediol dimethacrylate were also utilized as cross-linkers to prepare alkyl methacrylate monoliths. A series of alkyl methacrylate polymeric monoliths were synthesized in fused-silica capillaries using the three different cross-linkers. The porosity, permeability and column efficiency of the synthesized alkyl methacrylate monoliths were characterized. A mixture of phenol derivatives was employed to evaluate the applicability of the prepared monolithic columns for separating small molecules using capillary LC. The HEDA-based alkyl methacrylate monoliths offered the most efficient chromatographic separation for phenol derivatives. Moreover, the capability of applying the novel HEDA-based alkyl methacrylate monolithic columns for potential environmental analysis was demonstrated by separating eight phenylurea herbicides.
