RESUMO

Self-assembled quantum dots (QDs) are potential candidates for photoelectric and photovoltaic devices, because of their discrete energy levels. The characterization of QDs at the atomic level using a multimodal approach is crucial to improving device performance because QDs are nanostructures with highly correlated structural parameters. In this study, scanning transmission electron microscopy, geometric phase analysis, and atom probe tomography were employed to characterize structural parameters such as the shape, strain, and composition of self-assembled InAs-QDs with InGaAlAs spacer layers. The measurements revealed characteristic AlAs-rich regions above the QDs and InAs-rich regions surrounding the QD columns, which can be explained by the relationship between the effect of strain and surface curvature around the QD. The methodology described in this study accelerates the development of future QD devices because its multiple perspectives reveal phenomena such as atomic-scale segregations and allow for more detailed discussions of the mechanisms of these phenomena.

RESUMO

Efforts to optimize known materials and enhance their performance are ongoing, driven by the advancements resulting from the discovery of novel functional materials. Traditionally, the search for and optimization of functional materials has relied on the experience and intuition of specialized researchers. However, materials informatics (MI), which integrates materials data and machine learning, has frequently been used to realize systematic and efficient materials exploration without depending on manual tasks. Nonetheless, the discovery of new materials using MI remains challenging. In this study, we propose a method for the discovery of materials outside the scope of existing databases by combining MI with the experience and intuition of researchers. Specifically, we designed a two-dimensional map that plots known materials data based on their composition and structure, facilitating researchers' intuitive search for new materials. The materials map was implemented using an autoencoder-based neural network. We focused on the conductivity of 708 lithium oxide materials and considered the correlation with migration energy (ME), an index of lithium-ion conductivity. The distribution of existing data reflected in the materials map can contribute to the development of new lithium-ion conductive materials by enhancing the experience and intuition of material researchers.

RESUMO

Asian rice (Oryza sativa) was domesticated from O. rufipogon, and reduced seed-shattering behaviour was selected to increase yields. Two seed-shattering loci, qSH3 and sh4, are involved in reducing seed shattering in both japonica and indica rice cultivars, while qSH1 and qCSS3 are likely specific to japonica cultivars. In indica cultivars, qSH3 and sh4 fail to explain the degree of seed shattering, as an introgression line (IL) of O. rufipogon W630 carrying domesticated alleles at qSH3 and sh4 still showed seed shattering. Here we analysed differences in seed-shattering degree between the IL and the indica cultivar IR36. The values for grain detachment in the segregating population between the IL and IR36 were continuous. Based on QTL-seq analysis using the BC1F2 population between the IL and IR36, we detected two novel loci, qCSS2 and qCSS7 (QTLs for the Control of Seed Shattering in rice on chromosomes 2 and 7), which contributed to the reduced seed shattering in IR36. We further investigated the genetic interaction of qCSS2 and qCSS7 under the presence of qSH3 and sh4 mutations in O. rufipogon W630 and found that IL carrying IR36 chromosomal segments covering all four loci are required to explain seed-shattering degree in IR36. Since qCSS2 and qCSS7 were not detected in previous studies on seed shattering in japonica, their control may be specific to indica cultivars. Therefore, they are important to understanding the history of rice domestication as well as to adjusting the seed-shattering degree of indica cultivars to maximise their yield.

RESUMO

Digital filtering is essential for digital imaging, image recognition, and super-resolution technology. For example, the presence of noise in images captured by digital cameras causes deterioration of the image quality and image recognition rate. In order to improve the image recognition rate, noise reduction and edge preservation must be performed during preprocessing. Noise is generally reduced using low-pass filters, such as the Gaussian filter. Although they reduce noise, such filters also have the properties of blurring edge. A strong edge blur reduces the accuracy of the feature detection in image recognition. Therefore, in our previous study, a fast M-estimation Gaussian filter for images (FMGFI) was proposed as an image filter that simultaneously achieves denoising and edge preservation. In the FMGFI, the setting of the optimal basic width of the 2nd order B-spline basis functions is important for achieving simultaneous denoising and edge preservation. In this method, the optimal basic width of the FMGFI was determined not only by manually setting the basic width but also by human judgment of the filtered images. Consequently, the inability to automatically determine the optimal basic width hindered efficient denoising during image processing Therefore, in this research, we develop and propose a method that can automatically determine the optimal basic width of the FMGFI. The previously proposed method calculates using the same basic width for all the pixels over the entire image; in contrast, the proposed method calculates using the basic width automatically determined for each pixel. The experiments confirmed that the method proposed in this study achieves higher denoising and edge preservation performance than the ones used in previous research. The results also showed that it has the highest denoising performance against salt-and-pepper noise as compared to other filters: non-local mean filter, Gaussian filter, median filter, bilateral filter, adaptive bilateral filter, and FMGFI. The experimental results for the Gaussian noise sowed that the proposed method has the same denoising and edge preservation performance as the other filters in visual evaluation. From the above, the proposed method is expected to contribute to efficient denoising and improvement of image quality by using it as a preprocessing.

RESUMO

The compositional and structural investigations of threading dislocations (TDs) in InGaN/GaN multiple quantum wells were carried out using correlative transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and atom probe tomography (APT). The correlative TEM/APT analysis on the same TD reveals that the indium atoms are diffused along the TD and its concentration decreases with distance from the InGaN layer. On the basis of the results, we directly observed that the indium atoms originating from the InGaN layer diffuse toward the epitaxial GaN surface through the TD, and it is considered to have occurred via the pipe diffusion mechanism induced by strain energy relaxation.

RESUMO

A 49-year-old man was diagnosed with autoimmune pulmonary alveolar proteinosis. Chest computed tomography (CT) showed typical CT findings of pulmonary alveolar proteinosis: thickening of septa with ground-glass opacities in both lung fields. The diagnosis of autoimmune pulmonary alveolar proteinosis (PAP) was based on findings of bronchoalveolar lavage (BAL) fluid with milky appearance and elevated serum titer of anti-granulocyte-macrophage colony-stimulating factor antibody. We decided to perform segmental BAL via bronchoscopy. The surgery was performed under a general anesthesia since the patient had severe hypoxemia and strong cough reflex. Following 3 repeated courses of therapy, his respiratory condition and the ground-glass opacity in both lung fields improved remarkably, with no recurrence in 3 years. There are only a few published case reports in the world of the usefulness of segmental BAL under general anesthesia for PAP. We consider that segmental BAL is a useful therapeutic method for PAP in cases with severe hypoxemia, such as the present patient.

RESUMO

Pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH) is a progressive condition that frequently results in right ventricular (RV) remodeling. The objectives of this study are to investigate effects of rivaroxaban on RV remodeling in a rat model of PAH, created with Sugen5416 and chronic hypoxia, and the in vitro effects of rivaroxaban on human cardiac microvascular endothelial cells (HCMECs). To create the PAH model, male Sprague-Dawley rats were subcutaneously injected with Sugen5416 (20 mg/kg) and exposed to 2 weeks of hypoxia (10% O2), followed by 2 weeks of exposure to normoxia. The animals were then divided into 2 groups with or without administration of rivaroxaban (12 mg/kg/d) for a further 4 weeks. HCMECs were cultured under hypoxic conditions (37 °C, 1% O2, 5% CO2) with Sugen5416 and with or without rivaroxaban. In the model rats, RV systolic pressure and Fulton index increased by hypoxia with Sugen5416 were significantly decreased when treated with rivaroxaban. In HCMECs, hypoxia with Sugen5416 increased the expression of protease-activated receptor-2 (PAR-2) and the phosphorylation of extracellular signal-regulated kinase (ERK), c-Jun N-terminal kinase (JNK), and nuclear factor-kappa B (NF-κB), while treatment with rivaroxaban significantly suppressed the expression of these proteins. Rivaroxaban attenuated RV remodeling in a rat model of PAH by reducing ERK, JNK and NF-κB activation. Rivaroxaban has the possibility of providing additive effects on RV remodeling in patients with PAH.

RESUMO

A 78-year-old male with renal cell carcinoma was treated with combined immunotherapy of nivolumab and ipilimumab. After four courses of the treatment, a chest computed tomography (CT) revealed newly formed ground-glass opacities (GGOs) in both the lower lung lobes; drug-induced pneumonia was speculated. Eosinophil counts were elevated in both peripheral blood and bronchoalveolar lavage fluid. Both the immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICIs) were discontinued, following which the chest CT findings improved. Based on these findings, a diagnosis of ICI-induced eosinophilic pneumonia was made. Hence, clinicians should be wary of the risk of eosinophilic pneumonia during ICI-anticancer therapy.

RESUMO

A 37-year-old Japanese man presented with a bulla with niveau-like opacity in the right upper lung on chest radiography. Air-fluid level gradually increased despite broad-spectrum antibiotic therapy. Right upper lobectomy was performed, and epithelioid granuloma with mycobacteria was histopathologically observed. Bacterial culture of the fluid was negative, but mycobacterial culture was positive for Mycobacterium avium; therefore, the patient was diagnosed with pulmonary infected bulla caused by Mycobacterium avium. He was further treated with antimycobacterial agents after resection of the infected bulla. To our knowledge, this is the first report of pulmonary infected bulla caused by only Mycobacterium avium in the English literature.

RESUMO

Endobronchial ultrasound-guided transbronchial needle aspiration (EBUS-TBNA) has been reported to be useful not only for the diagnosis of lymph node metastasis of lung cancer but also for benign diseases. We retrospectively analyzed the results of patients with tuberculous lymphadenitis (TL) who had undergone EBUS-TBNA between November 2010 and January 2016. EBUS-TBNA was performed in 427 cases during that period. Six cases were finally diagnosed as TL. The punctured lymph node was 8 lesions. Pathological findings consistent with TL were obtained in all 6 cases (100%), and the tissue specimens were positive in Ziehl-Neelsen staining in 3 of the 6 cases (50%). In all 6 cases, the acid-fast bacteria (AFB) smear test of the needle rinse fluid was negative, 2 cases were positive for AFB culture (33.3%), and 2 cases were positive for Mycobacterium tuberculosis (MTB)-PCR test (33.3%). In this study, the positive rate of mycobacterial culture and the MTB-PCR test of the needle rinse fluid was low, though the concordance rate of pathological findings with TL was high (100%). The results suggest that EBUS-TBNA should be carefully evaluated in patients with TL, considering the low positive rate of mycobacterial culture and MTB-PCR test in the needle rinse fluid.

RESUMO

Patients treated with immune checkpoint inhibitors can develop various immunological complications; however, few cases of immune thrombocytopenia occurring in association with the administration of these agents have so far been reported. We herein report the case of a 62-year-old Japanese man with non-small-cell lung cancer who developed immune thrombocytopenia and hypothyroidism during nivolumab therapy. After the second administration of the drug, his peripheral blood platelet count rapidly decreased to 1.6 × 104/µl with a petechial rash and symptoms associated with a low thyroid function. Nivolumab-induced immune thrombocytopenia and hypothyroidism were suspected based on the presence of platelet-associated IgG, an increased level of autoantibodies to thyroglobulin and thyroid peroxidase and an enlarged thyroid gland. The patient eventually made a full recovery after treatment with oral prednisolone and levothyroxine. Further investigations and the accumulation of data are necessary to elucidate the precise mechanisms underlying the autoimmune responses that occur in patients treated with immune checkpoint inhibitors.

RESUMO

Top-down approach has been viewed as an efficient and straightforward method to prepare nanosized zeolites. Yet, the mechanical breaking of zeolite causes amorphization, which usually requires a post-milling recrystallization to obtain fully crystalline nanoparticles. Herein we present a facile methodology to prepare zeolite nanocrystals, where milling and recrystallization can be performed in situ. A milling apparatus specially designed to work under conditions of high alkalinity and temperature enables the in situ recrystallization during milling. Taking zeolite A as an example, we demonstrate its size reduction from ~3 µm to 66 nm in 30 min, which is quite faster than previous methods reported. Three functions, viz., miniaturization, amorphization and recrystallization were found to take effect concurrently during this one-pot process. The dynamic balance between these three functions was achieved by adjusting the milling period and temperature, which lead to the tuning of zeolite A particle size. Particle size and crystallinity of the zeolite A nanocrystals were confirmed by X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy and water adsorption-desorption. This work presents a pioneering advancement in this field of nanosized zeolites, and will facilitate the mass production as well as boost the wide applications of nanosized zeolites.

RESUMO

The atomic structure of the Si(111)-(5 × 2)-Au surface, a periodic gold chain on the silicon surface, has been a long-debated issue in surface science. The recent three candidates, the so-called Erwin-Barke-Himpsel (EBH) model [S. C. Erwin, I. Barke, and F. J. Himpsel, Phys. Rev. B 80, 155409 (2009)], the Abukawa-Nishigaya (AN) model [T. Abukawa and Y. Nishigaya, Phys. Rev. Lett. 110, 036102 (2013)], and the Kwon-Kang (KK) model [S. G. Kwon and M. H. Kang, Phys. Rev. Lett. 113, 086101 (2014)] that has one additional Au atom than the EBH model are tested by surface x-ray diffraction data. A two-dimensional Patterson map constructed from the in-plane diffraction intensities rejects the AN model and prefers the KK model over the EBH model. On the basis of the arrangement of Au obtained from the Patterson map, all the reconstructed Si atoms, such as the so-called honeycomb chain structure, are directly imaged out by utilizing a holographic method. The KK model reproduces out-of-plane diffraction data as well.
