BACKGROUND: There is growing evidence that COVID-19 brought changes that immediately affected early language development. Little is known for how long these COVID-19 related changes shaped development. The current study systematically and longitudinally addressed this issue, following up children's language development throughout the first 2.5 years. METHOD: The present study follows up on the sample from Frota et al. (2022), which demonstrated that 7-9-month-old infants born and raised during the pandemic do not segment words unlike pre-pandemic peers. Four studies were conducted: (1) word segmentation task at 12 months of age (Npandemic = 15); (2) word learning task at 20 months of age (Npandemic = 20); (3) language and communication development up to 30 months of age, via CDI and CSBS parental reports (Npandemic ranged 25-74); (4) overall development at 30 months of age using the Griffiths Developmental Scales (Npandemic = 16). RESULTS: The pandemic sample consistently underperformed in all four studies in comparison to pre-pandemic data. There was no evidence of developed word segmentation abilities at 12 months of age, and no successful word learning at 20 months of age. Lexical development between 12 and 24 months of age was lower than in the pre-pandemic sample, while social communication did not seem to be affected. At 30 months of age, the pandemic sample showed lower scores and lower mental age on the Language and Communication Griffiths' subscale, in comparison to the pre-pandemic data. CONCLUSIONS: Infants born and raised during the pandemic have a poorer language development, that persists at least until 30 months of age.

This study investigated interactions among linguistics, social and political factors in a linguistically rich environment. For this purpose, two-hundred Iranian preschoolers (aged 5 to 6 years old) from four ethnic/linguistic groups (Arab, Kurd, Turk and Fars) were selected using multi-stage stratified sampling. All participants took part in an Elementary English language course and their exposure to foreground TV was recorded using media exposure portfolio. Maternal education and family income were considered as criteria for socio-economic status. Children's language proficiency was measured through Language Sample Analysis (LSA). The LSA components included total number of utterances produced, total number of words produced, total number of new words produced and mean length of utterances. Regression analysis, ANOVA and t-tests were used for data analyses. The results showed that bilingual children performed slightly better than multilingual children in LSA measures but this cannot be taken for granted. Moreover, socio-economic status and LSA measures were significantly related but TV exposure was not associated with the LSA measures. These results supported the arguments purported by minority language proponents on the importance of using children's mother tongue in educational curriculum.

Introduction: The present study aimed to (1) characterize the home-literacy environments (HLE) of toddlers with Down syndrome (DS) and (2) examine if richness of the HLE, child engagement during shared storybook reading activities, quality of a caregiver-child shared storybook reading activity, and exposure to language in the home environment predicted child receptive vocabulary concurrently (Time 1) and 6 months later (Time 2). Methods: Participants were toddlers with DS (n = 13 at Time 1, 11-29 months of age; n = 10 at Time 2) and their mothers. Mothers completed a Home Literacy Environment Questionnaire at Time 1, which was used to characterize the HLE and to calculate two composite variables: richness of the HLE and child engagement in shared storybook reading. Also at Time 1, the home language environment was measured using adult word count from the LENA Recorder DLP©. The LENA was also used to audio-record and capture the quality of a caregiver-child storybook reading task in the child's home using the book Dear Zoo. At both time points, mothers completed the MacArthur-Bates Communicative Development Inventories, and the number of words understood variable was used to measure receptive vocabulary. Results/Discussion: Results indicated that toddlers with DS experience rich HLEs and interactive shared storybook reading encounters with their mothers. A multiple linear regression revealed that child engagement and the home language environment correlated with both toddlers' concurrent and later receptive vocabularies, while the richness of the HLE and the shared storybook reading task emerged as moderate predictors of receptive vocabulary 6 months later.

High-quality early care and education is a known protective factor for infants and toddlers who experience early childhood poverty, especially for early communication outcomes. However, the quality of care is variable in the United States, and efforts to increase the quality of interactions is impeded by cost and high rates of turnover in the field. In this paper, we explore a low-cost, light touch social media intervention that uses the TikTok platform to increase infant-toddler teachers' (ITTs) knowledge of early communication and social interactions while validating the important role that ITTs play in the lives of young children. We use a mixed method, pre-post design to explore the feasibility and acceptability of the BabyTok project from the vantage point of the ITT participants. Teachers offered positive feedback about the content, delivery of the intervention through TikTok and the impact on their feelings about their role in helping young children learn. Purpose: This current study aimed to explore early prelingual auditory development (EPLAD) and early language development in Mandarin-speaking children who received simultaneous bilateral cochlear implants (BICI) during the first year of cochlear implantation and compare the performance of the children who received BICI with those received unilateral cochlear implant (UCI). Methods: 39 Mandarin-speaking children who received BICIs simultaneously and 36 children with UCIs were enrolled in this study. To access the EPLAD, the Infant-Toddler Meaningful Auditory Integration Scale (IT/MAIS) was conducted, and a subtest of the simplified short-form version of the Mandarin Communicative Development Inventory (SSF-MCDI) was used to evaluate the development of expressive and receptive vocabulary for the children at indicated time points after surgery. Results: In both the simultaneous BICI and UCI groups, we observed significantly increased scores of the SSF-MCDI and IT/MAIS 1 year after the surgery. There are indications of early advantages in children with BICI in IT/MAIS scores (at 1, 3, and 6 months after activation). For early development of language, a great difference between the expressive vocabulary scores and the receptive vocabulary scores was observed in both groups. We found there were not significant differences between the two groups on expressive or receptive vocabulary scores, the use of more differentiated measures might be required in future research. We further found that the development of the receptive or expressive vocabulary is dramatically correlated with the age at implantation and the total scores of IT/MAIS for children with simultaneous BICIs. Conclusion: These results may supplement the skills development of early language and auditory in Mandarin-native children with simultaneous CIs. It is obvious that children with normal hearing have mastery of receptive vocabulary before that of expressive vocabulary, which is the same as children with unilateral and bilateral CIs in this research. IT/MAIS total scores and age at CI were important factors for early language performance in children with simultaneous BICIs.

Antecedentes y objetivo: La necesidad de realizar estudios sobre el nivel de desarrollo léxico temprano en niños bilingües vasco-español es una realidad plasmada en la literatura científica. En este contexto, tanto los inventarios de desarrollo comunicativo MacArthur-Bates como los métodos basados en la observación temprana han supuesto un importante elemento para el análisis del nivel de desarrollo lingüístico de los niños. Por tanto, el objetivo de este trabajo ha sido el de llevar a cabo una comparativa entre dos instrumentos diferentes sobre una misma muestra: por una parte, el Inventario de Desarrollo de Habilidades Comunicativas de MacArthur-Bates, en sus adaptaciones en español y en vasco, y por otra parte, la observación longitudinal por medio de las grabaciones de los niños en contextos diferentes de comunicación espontánea. Materiales y método: Los participantes han sido 8 niños vascos con distinta L1 (vasco o español) analizados desde los 17 a los 30meses y procedentes de un pequeño pueblo del País Vasco, Bermeo. Se realizaron tres grabaciones mediante la observación contextualizada no-participativa en aquellos meses en los que los niños/as cumplían 17, 25 y 30meses. Además, las anotaciones y transcripciones se realizaron a través de softwares profesionales: ELAN y CHAT. Asimismo, en el momento de la tercera grabación las familias cumplimentaron el CDI-2 en su adaptación al castellano y al euskera. Resultados: Los resultados muestran la utilidad de los reportes parentales para lograr información sobre el desarrollo de las habilidades comunicativas tempranas.(AU)


Background and objective: The need to carry out studies on the level of early lexical development in Basque-Spanish bilingual children is a reality reflected in the scientific literature. In this context, both the MacArthur-Bates communicative development inventories and the methods based on early observation have been an important element for the analysis of the level of linguistic development of children. Therefore, the objective of this work has been to carry out a comparison between two different instruments on the same sample: on the one hand, the MacArthur-Bates Communication Skills Development Inventory, in its adaptations in Spanish and Basque, and, on the other hand, longitudinal observation through recordings of children in different contexts of spontaneous communication. Materials and method: The participants were 8 Basque children with different L1 (Basque or Spanish) analyzed from 17 to 30months and from a small town in the Basque Country, Bermeo. Three recordings were made through non-participatory contextualized observation in those months in which the children were 17, 25 and 30months old. In addition, the annotations and transcripts were made through professional software: ELAN and CHAT. Likewise, at the time of the third recording, the families completed the CDI-2 in its adaptation to Spanish and Basque. Results: The results show the usefulness of parental reports to obtain information on the development of early communication skills. In any case, the need for larger explorations is considered necessary in order not to fall into the argument of the «overvaluation» of children's broadcasts.(AU)

This study linked background TV and socioeconomic status (SES) to minority children's Persian vocabulary development. To this end, 80 Iranian preschool children (aged 5-6 years old) from two minority groups of Arabs and Turks were selected using stratified random sampling. They were simultaneous bilinguals, i.e., their mother tongue was either Arabic or Azari and their first language was Persian. Language sample analysis (LSA) was used to measure vocabulary development through a 15-min interview by language experts (PhD in applied linguistics). The LSA measures included total number of utterances (TNU), total number of words (TNW), total number of new words (NDW), and mean length of utterance (MLU). A series of independent-samples t test, paired-samples t test, and repeated measures MANOVA tests were ran to examine data. Results showed significant improvements in children's vocabulary scores from pretest to posttest for all children. In addition, high-SES children scored higher on the vocabulary measures in pretest and posttest. Moreover, background TV was associated with higher means in the TNW and the NDW in groups. The researchers concluded that background TV may be related to higher vocabulary scores in low-SES families as it may compensate for some linguistics gaps in these families including lower amount of child-parent interaction, play, and parents' level of literacy.

Preterm children (born <37 gestational weeks) who are born at very early gestational age (<32 weeks, very preterm, VP) and/or with very low birth weight (≤1500 g, VLBW) are at increased risk for language and literacy deficits. The continuum between very early language development and literacy skills among these children is not clear. Our objective was to investigate the associations between language development at 2 years (corrected age) and literacy skills at 7 years in VP/VLBW children. Participants were 136 VP/VLBW children and 137 term controls (a 6-year regional population cohort, children living in Finnish-speaking families). At 2 years of corrected age, language (lexical development, utterance length) was assessed using the Finnish version of the MacArthur-Bates Communicative Development Inventory and the Expressive Language Scale from Bayley scales of Infant Development, second edition. At 7 years, children's literacy skills (pre-reading skills, reading, and writing) were evaluated. Statistically significant correlations were found in both groups between language development at 2 years and literacy skills at 7 years (r-values varied between 0.29 and 0.43, p < 0.01). In the VP/VLBW group, 33% to 74% of the children with early weak language development had weak literacy skills at 7 years relative to those with more advanced early language skills (11% to 44%, p < 0.001 to 0.047). Language development at 2 years explained 14% to 28% of the variance in literacy skills 5 years later. Language development at 2 years had fair predictive value for literacy skills at 7 years in the VP/VLBW group (area under the receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve (AUC) values varied between 0.70 and 0.77, p < 0.001). Findings provide support for the continuum between very early language development and later language ability, in the domain of literacy skills in preterm children.

OBJECTIVES: Paediatric cochlear implantation within the first year of life results in better outcome in auditory and language skills. Beside individual, audiological and social factors, quantity and quality of daily cochlear implant (CI) use also seem to be an influencing factor. The purpose of this study was to evaluate children's early receptive and expressive language performance considering bilingual language development as well as quantity and quality of daily CI use and intraoperative objective measurements. METHODS: The retrospective analysis included data from 35 very early bilaterally cochlear-implanted children (age at CI M = 8.4 ± 1.5 months). Language performance was assessed by the German standardised test SETK-2 (age at testing M = 29.4 ± 4.0 months). The CI system-integrated data-logging was analysed with regard to daily CoilOn-time, CoilOff and exposure to classified listening scenes. Intraoperatively measured thresholds of evoked compound action potentials (T-ECAPs) were analysed to ensure CI functionality. RESULTS: The cohort showed language performance within the normal range for word comprehension, sentence comprehension and word production, level of sentence production was reduced. Overall, bilingual children performed less well than monolingual children. Intraoperative T-ECAPs were recorded for the total cohort and no anomalies were detected. Children used their CI for about 8.7 ± 1.4 h per day, most of this time spent in a quiet environment (38%). Word production was significantly correlated with the daily duration of CI use (CoilOn-time) and with exposure to the listening environment Speech. No correlation was found between number of daily coil disconnections (CoilOff) and language performance. CONCLUSION: Very early bilateral cochlear implantation may result in age-appropriate language skills already at the age of 2 years. Monolingualism seems to a better condition for early language development with CI than bilingualism. Especially for word production, the daily duration of CI use and exposure time in a speech-characterised environment seem to be additional positive factors. Monitoring the data-logs should be one important focus of professionals during the postoperative rehabilitation process to detect potential benefits and risks. These findings should be integrated into rehabilitative therapy and parent counselling.

Speech rhythm is considered one of the first windows into the native language, and the taxonomy of rhythm classes is commonly used to explain early language discrimination. Relying on formal rhythm classification is problematic for two reasons. First, it is not known to which extent infants' sensitivity to language variation is attributable to rhythm alone, and second, it is not known how infants discriminate languages not classified in any of the putative rhythm classes. Employing a central-fixation preference paradigm with natural stimuli, this study tested whether infants differentially attend to native versus nonnative varieties that differ only in temporal rhythm cues, and both of which are rhythmically unclassified. An analysis of total looking time did not detect any rhythm preferences at any age. First-look duration, arguably more closely reflecting infants' underlying perceptual sensitivities, indicated age-specific preferences for native versus non-native rhythm: 4-month-olds seemed to prefer the native-, and 6-month-olds the non-native language-variety. These findings suggest that infants indeed acquire native rhythm cues rather early, by the 4th month, supporting the theory that rhythm can bootstrap further language development. Our data on infants' processing of rhythmically unclassified languages suggest that formal rhythm classification does not determine infants' ability to discriminate language varieties.

Resumen Se examinaron datos provenientes de la evaluación del lenguaje de 104 niños con edades entre 16 y 30 meses residentes en Lima con una versión preliminar de la adaptación de la Forma II de los reportes parentales MacArthur-Bates Communicative Development Inventories (CDI) al español del Perú. Se analizó el léxico productivo a partir de la lista de palabras del reporte y se realizaron análisis de regresión para evaluar si el nivel de vocabulario contribuía a predecir el desarrollo gramatical de los niños, empleando como variables de control la edad del niño y el nivel de escolarización materna (como indicador del nivel socioeconómico) y como variables dependientes la longitud media de los tres enunciados más largos (LME3) y la complejidad morfosintáctica (CM), obtenidas con el CDI. Los sustantivos fueron la clase de palabras más frecuente y que más aumentó con la edad, como en el italiano (Caselli et al., 1995; D'Odorico y Fasolo, 2007) y el español mexicano (Jackson-Maldonado et al., 1993). Además, el nivel de vocabulario predijo el nivel de desarrollo gramatical, como en el español peninsular (Mariscal y Gallego, 2012) y en el mexicano (Thal, Jackson-Maldonado y Acosta, 2000): una vez controlados los efectos de la edad y la escolarización materna, el vocabulario explicó el 20 % de la variabilidad de la LME3 y el 37 % de la variabilidad de la CM. Este estudio ofrece información sobre el desarrollo temprano del vocabulario y la gramática en el español del Perú, una etapa escasamente estudiada en esta variedad.


Abstract We present results from the analysis of data from 104 children with ages ranging from 16 to 30 months, living in Lima, Peru. The data was collected using a preliminary version of the MacArthur-Bates Communicative Development Inventories (CDI), Form II, adapted to Peruvian Spanish. The CDIs are parental reports that assess language through the presentation of a series of items to the parents, mainly in the form of a checklist. We aimed to (1) describe the composition of Peruvian children's productive lexicon at this age, (2) identify whether nouns were the most frequent class in their vocabulary, and also the class which increased the most with age, as is the case in Italian (Caselli et al., 1995; D'Odorico y Fasolo, 2007) and Mexican Spanish (Jackson-Maldonado et al., 1993); and (3) assess whether vocabulary size explained the level of grammatical development as in Peninsular and Mexican Spanish (Mariscal & Gallego, 2012; Thal, Jackson-Maldonado & Acosta, 2000). In order to do so, we analyzed the following data: age; maternal education level (as an indicator of socioeconomic status); vocabulary (represented by a list of more than 500 words that parents recognized as produced or not by their children); the mean length of the three longest utterances produced by the child as reported by parents; and sentence complexity, a measure of the level of structures produced by the child based on the parent's report. To achieve the first and second goals, words in the vocabulary list were classified according to grammatical class. Then, the percentage of production of each class of words was calculated, as well as the correlation between this percentage and age. Children's vocabulary was composed mainly of nouns, which represented 57 % of the production, followed by predicates (verbs and adjectives) and function words (pronouns, determiners, prepositions, conjunctions and connectives). Noun was the class of words that increased the most with age, showing the highest correlation with such variable (r = .72). Correlations between other types of words and age varied: it was also high for adjectives; but moderate for some classes and low for others. This showed that each type of word increased at different rates. Regarding the third goal, to assess the relationship between vocabulary size and level of grammatical development, two regression analyses were conducted to predict the variables mean-length-of-the-three-longest-utterances and sentence-complexity. For both analyses, age and maternal education level were entered in the first step, in order to control for their effect; and vocabulary was entered in the second step. Both models accounted for substantial amounts of variance and showed an important effect on vocabulary. The model with the mean-length-of-the-three-longest-utterances as the dependent variable accounted for 56 % of the variance. The first step explained 37 % of the variance (due to the contribution of both age and maternal education level), and the second step explained an additional 20 %. The model with sentence-complexity accounted for a higher percentage of the variance, 75 %. The first step explained 38 % of the variance, exclusively due to age; while the second step explained an additional 37 %. These results suggest a strong relationship between vocabulary and grammar. Further research is needed to confirm these results with direct measures of child production and more representative samples of children acquiring Peruvian Spanish, including speakers of dialects of other parts of the country. However, these results, preliminary as they are, shed light on the composition of vocabulary and its relationship with grammar in a variety of Spanish scarcely studied during early stages of development.

Higher-order thinking is relational reasoning in which multiple representations are linked together, through inferences, comparisons, abstractions, and hierarchies. We examine the development of higher-order thinking in 64 preschool-aged children, observed from 14 to 58 months in naturalistic situations at home. We used children's spontaneous talk about and with relations (i.e., higher-order thinking talk, or HOTT) as a window onto their higher-order thinking skills. We find that surface HOTT, in which relations between representations are more immediate and easily perceptible, appears before-and is far more frequent than-structure HOTT, in which relations between representations are more abstract and less easy to perceive. Child-specific factors (including early vocabulary and gesture use, first-born status, and family income) predict differences in children's onset (i.e., age of acquisition) of HOTT and its trajectory of use across development. Although HOTT utterances tend to be longer and more syntactically complex than non-HOTT utterances, HOTT frequently appears in non-complex utterances, and a substantial proportion of children achieve complex utterance onset prior to the onset of HOTT. This finding suggests that complex language is neither necessary nor sufficient for HOTT to occur; other factors above and beyond complex linguistic skills are involved in the onset and use of higher-order thinking. Finally, we found that the trajectory of HOTT, particularly structure HOTT-but not complex utterances-during the preschool period predicts standardized outcome measures of inference and analogy skills in grade school, which underscores the crucial role that this kind of early talk plays for later outcomes.

BACKGROUND: Very-low-birth-weight preterm infants have a higher rate of language impairments compared with children born full term. Early identification of preterm infants at risk for language delay is essential to guide early intervention at the time of optimal neuroplasticity. This study examined near-term structural brain magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and white matter microstructure assessed on diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) in relation to early language development in children born very preterm. METHODS: A total of 102 very-low-birth-weight neonates (birthweight≤1500g, gestational age ≤32-weeks) were recruited to participate from 2010 to 2011. Near-term structural MRI was evaluated for white matter and cerebellar abnormalities. DTI fractional anisotropy, mean diffusivity, axial diffusivity, and radial diffusivity were assessed. Language development was assessed with Bayley Scales of Infant-Toddler Development-III at 18 to 22 months adjusted age. Multivariate models with leave-one-out cross-validation and exhaustive feature selection identified three brain regions most predictive of language function. Distinct logistic regression models predicted high-risk infants, defined by language scores >1 S.D. below average. RESULTS: Of 102 children, 92 returned for neurodevelopmental testing. Composite language score mean ± S.D. was 89.0 ± 16.0; 31 of 92 children scored <85, including 15 of 92 scoring <70, suggesting moderate-to-severe delay. Children with cerebellar asymmetry had lower receptive language subscores (P = 0.016). Infants at high risk for language impairments were predicted based on regional white matter microstructure on DTI with high accuracy (sensitivity, specificity) for composite (89%, 86%), expressive (100%, 90%), and receptive language (100%, 90%). CONCLUSIONS: Multivariate models of near-term structural MRI and white matter microstructure on DTI may assist in identification of preterm infants at risk for language impairment, guiding early intervention.

BACKGROUND: Children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) show substantial variability in their language development. Language problems are highly prevalent in these children. In addition, the quality of early language abilities contributes to the overall development of these children and is highly predictive of their adult outcome. Yet, little is known about language development in children at risk of ASD during the first years of life. AIMS: To compare early receptive language (RL) and expressive language (EL) development in children at risk of ASD and determine predictors of language development. METHODS & PROCEDURES: Developmental trajectories of RL and EL were investigated from 10 to 36 months of age in younger siblings of typically developing children (LR-sibs, N = 30) and in younger siblings of children with ASD (HR-sibs, N = 31) using the Mullen Scales of Early Learning. Furthermore, both child and demographic characteristics were examined as possible predictors of language development. OUTCOMES & RESULTS: Both groups showed similar growth curves for RL and EL and the majority of the children showed average (within ±1.5 SD of the mean) or above-average language abilities. Nevertheless, the mean growth of EL was lower and the variation in growth of both RL and EL was higher in HR-sibs than in LR-sibs. Furthermore, early child characteristics were predictive of language development in both groups. Yet, some child characteristics seemed to be of more importance in HR-sibs than in LR-sibs. Consequently, lower non-verbal abilities at 10 months in both groups and a higher degree of ASD characteristics at 14 months in HR-sibs may be indicative of difficulties in language development. CONCLUSIONS & IMPLICATIONS: HR-sibs show more variation in their language development than LR-sibs during the first 3 years of life. The majority of HR-sibs, however, did not present with below-average language abilities. Yet, early characteristics of ASD may be a red flag for difficulties in the language development of HR-sibs.

BACKGROUND: Given the significance of early language for later academic achievement, language development can be an important outcome measure in evaluation of early childhood intervention programmes. Language development may be challenging to assess in settings where trained personnel are hard to find; therefore, maternal report can be a reliable alternative measure. AIM: The aim of this study was to adapt a maternal report measure, the MacArthur Communicative Development Inventory II-Short Form, in the Sindhi language and to examine its psychometric properties as a measure of language outcome in 2-year-old children in rural Pakistan. METHODS: A three-phase process was followed to produce a Sindhi adaptation of the tool comprising 100 words. The first phase was a review of the original 258 words through a focus group discussion with a team familiar with the context; the second phase was testing 258 words to compile a 100-word list of easy, moderate and difficult words. The third phase was a pilot of the 100-word list followed by administration in a larger intervention study population. RESULTS: On administration with 1381 children, concurrent validity with the Bayley Scale of Infant Development III using the Pearson's correlation test showed a moderate association for comprehension (r = 0.45, p = 0.01, n = 1381) and good association for expression (r = 0.51, p = 0.01, n = 1381). Internal consistency was high with alphas of 0.98 for comprehension items and 0.96 for expression items. CONCLUSION: The authors conclude that the Sindhi adaptation of the MacArthur Communicative Development Inventory followed a feasible and rigorous methodology to create a reliable and sensitive tool to assess young children's language development for use in a child assessment battery for early childhood health, nutrition and development studies.

The mean length of utterace (MLU), which was proposed by Brown (1973) as a better index for language development in children than age, has been regularly reported in case studies as well as in cross-sectional studies on early spontaneous language production. Despite the reliability of MLU as a measure of (morpho-)syntactic development having been called into question, its extensive use in language acquisition studies highlights its utility not only for intra- and inter-individual comparison in monolingual language acquisition, but also for cross-linguistic assessment and comparison of bilinguals' early language development (Müller, 1993; Yip and Matthews, 2006; Meisel, 2011). An additional issue concerns whether MLU should be measured in words (MLU-w) or morphemes (MLU-m), the latter option being the most difficult to gauge, since new challenges have arisen regarding how to count zero morphemes, suppletive and fused morphemes. The different criteria have consequences, especially when comparing development in languages with diverging morphological complexity. A variant of MLU, the MLU3, which is calculated out of the three longest sentences produced (MLU3-w and MLU3-m), is included among the subscales of expressive language development in CDI parental reports (Fenson et al., 1993, 2007). The aim of the study is to investigate the consistency and utility of MLU3-w and MLU3-m as a measure for (morpho-)syntactic development in Basque, an agglutinative language. To that end, cross-sectional data were obtained using either the Basque CDI-2 instrument (16- to 30-month-olds) or the Basque CDI-3 (30- to 50-month-olds). The results of analyzing reports on over 1,200 children show three main findings. First, MLU3-w and MLU3-m can report equally well on very young children's development. Second, the strong correlations found between MLU3 and expressive vocabulary in the Basque CDI-2 and CDI-3 instruments, as well as between MLU3 and both nominal and verbal morphology scales, confirm the consistency not only of MLU3 but also of the two Basque CDI instruments. Finally, both MLU3-w and MLU3-m subscales appear sensitive to input after age 2, which emphasizes their utility for identifying developmental patterns in Basque bilinguals.

This study explores pre-linguistic vocal trajectories in infants with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) during caregiver-infant interaction. Home videos were obtained from 10 infants with ASD and 10 typically developing infants (TD), covering three time periods: 0-6 months (T1, 47 video sequences), 6-12 months (T2, 47 video sequences), and 12-18 months (T3, 48 video sequences). In total 142 video sequences were analyzed. Vocalizations, long reduplicated babbling, 2-syllable babbling, and first words were investigated longitudinally. Face-gazing was also analyzed, to evaluate the social quality of vocal behaviors. Results show a lower rate of vocalizations in the ASD group at T2, and a lower rate of first words at T3, compared to the TD group. However, the prevalence of non-social babbling, appeared higher in the ASD group. The implications of these findings for screening programs are discussed.

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to evaluate early spoken language development in young Mandarin-speaking children during the first 24 months after cochlear implantation, as measured by receptive and expressive vocabulary growth rates. Growth rates were compared with those of normally hearing children and with growth rates for English-speaking children with cochlear implants. METHOD: Receptive and expressive vocabularies were measured with the simplified short form (SSF) version of the Mandarin Communicative Development Inventory (MCDI) in a sample of 112 pediatric implant recipients at baseline, 3, 6, 12, and 24 months after implantation. Implant ages ranged from 1 to 5 years. Scores were expressed in terms of normal equivalent ages, allowing normalized vocabulary growth rates to be determined. Scores for English-speaking children were re-expressed in these terms, allowing direct comparisons of Mandarin and English early spoken language development. RESULTS: Vocabulary growth rates during the first 12 months after implantation were similar to those for normally hearing children less than 16 months of age. Comparisons with growth rates for normally hearing children 16-30 months of age showed that the youngest implant age group (1-2 years) had an average growth rate of 0.68 that of normally hearing children; while the middle implant age group (2-3 years) had an average growth rate of 0.65; and the oldest implant age group (>3 years) had an average growth rate of 0.56, significantly less than the other two rates. Growth rates for English-speaking children with cochlear implants were 0.68 in the youngest group, 0.54 in the middle group, and 0.57 in the oldest group. Growth rates in the middle implant age groups for the two languages differed significantly. CONCLUSIONS: The SSF version of the MCDI is suitable for assessment of Mandarin language development during the first 24 months after cochlear implantation. Effects of implant age and duration of implantation can be compared directly across languages using normalized vocabulary growth rates. These comparisons for Mandarin and English reveal comparable results, despite the diversity of these languages, underscoring the universal role of plasticity in the developing auditory system.
