Introducción: el nivel socioeconómico (NSE) de las familias tiene un papel fundamentan en el desempeño académico de los estudiantes. Durante la pandemia, las familias con NSE bajo tuvieron menores oportunidades y se acrecentaron las desigualdades por limitaciones económicas y técnicas, lo cual pudo haber influido en las calificaciones y rendimiento académico de los alumnos. Objetivo: identificar la relación entre el NSE y el rendimiento académico de un grupo de estudiantes de licenciatura en enfermería durante la pandemia COVID-19. Metodología: estudio transversal, cuantitativo, analítico, con alumnos que tuvieron educación a distancia, se utilizó el instrumento denominado Nivel Socioeconómico (NSE) de la Asociación Mexicana de Agencias de Inteligencia de Mercado y Opinión Pública (AMAI), así como los promedios del semestre cursado en línea Resultados: participaron 167 alumnos, entre las variables de rendimiento académico y nivel socioeconómico se obtuvo un valor de p = 0.961, para las variables de sexo y estado civil se encontró asociación con un valor de p < 0.05. Conclusiones: no se identificó ninguna relación entre las variables del rendimiento académico y el nivel socioeconómico; sin embargo, otras variables como estado civil y sexo dieron significancia estadística, por lo que se sugiere ahondar en estas variables, así como su relación con el rendimiento académico.


Introduction: The socioeconomic level (SES) of families has a fundamental role in the academic performance of students, during the pandemic families with a low SES had fewer opportunities and increased inequalities due to economic and technical limitations, which could influence grades and academic performance. of the students Objective: To identify th e relationship between the SES and aca demic performance of nursing undergraduate students during COVID-19. Methodology: Cross-sectional, quantitative, analytical study with students who had distance education, the instrument called Socioeconomic Level (NSE) of the Mexican Association of Market Intelligence Agencies and Public Opinion (AMAI) was used. and the averages of the semester completed online. Results: 167 students participated, between the variables of academic performance and socioeconomic level a value of p = 0.961 was obtained, for the variables of sex, marital status an association was found with a p value less than 0.05. Conclusions: No relationship was identified between the variables of academic performance and socioeconomic level, however, other variables such as marital status and sex gave statistical significance, so it is suggested to delve into these variables as well as their relationship with academic performance.

This paper analyzes the application of various telemedicine services in Gansu Province, China during the COVID-19 epidemic, and summarizes the experiences with these services. In addition, the satisfaction levels of patients and doctors with the application of telemedicine in COVID-19 were investigated, the deficiencies of telemedicine in Gansu were determined, and recommendations for modification were proposed. Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) has broken out in China, and Gansu Province in Northwest of China has not been spared. To date, there are 91 local COVID-19 cases and 42 imported cases. 109 hospitals were selected as designated hospitals during the COVID-19 outbreak, and most of them were secondary hospitals. However, it was unsatisfactory that the ability of medical services is relatively low in most of secondary hospitals and primary hospitals. Therefore, we helped the secondary hospitals cope with COVID-19 by means of remote consultation, long-distance education, telemedicine question and answer (Q&A). Our practical experience shows that telemedicine can be widely used during the COVID-19 epidemic, especially in developing countries and areas with lagging medical standards.

BACKGROUND: Emergency care clinicians are expected to use the latest research evidence in practice. However, emergency nurses do not always consistently implement evidence-based practice (EBP). An educational intervention on EBP was implemented to promote emergency nurses' use of EBP, and the effectiveness of it was evaluated. AIMS: This study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of an EBP educational intervention on emergency nurses' EBP attitudes, knowledge, self-efficacy, skills, and behavior. The study also examined learners' satisfaction with the EBP educational intervention. METHODS: A randomized controlled trial with parallel groups with evaluations before the education, immediately after it, and 6 and 12 months after the education was conducted at four emergency departments in two university hospitals. The experimental group (N = 40) received EBP education while the control group (N = 40) completed self-directed EBP education. The primary outcomes were emergency nurses' EBP attitudes, knowledge, self-efficacy, skills, and behavior, while the secondary outcome was satisfaction with the EBP education. RESULTS: Thirty-five participants of an experimental and 29 participants of a control group completed the study. There were no statistically significant (p < .05) improvements and differences between groups in EBP attitude, self-efficacy, or behavior immediately after the EBP education. At the 6-month measurement point, the experimental group showed significantly better EBP attitudes, behavior, knowledge, and self-efficacy than the control group. At the 12-month measurement point, the improvements began to decrease. The groups also differed significantly in terms of participant satisfaction with how the teacher encouraged learners to ask clinical questions. LINKING EVIDENCE TO ACTION: The EBP educational intervention implemented in this study had a positive effect on emergency nurses' EBP attitudes, knowledge, self-efficacy, skills, and behavior. The effects of the education appeared the best 6 months after the education. After this point, the results began to decrease and approached baseline levels. EBP educational interventions designed for emergency nurses should apply various teaching strategies to improve their EBP attitude, knowledge, self-efficacy, skills, behavior, and satisfaction with the education.

PURPOSE: With the widespread development of low and ultra-low rectal sphincter-preservation surgery, low anterior resection syndrome, a new clinical challenge, has received increased attention. As the principal practitioners of this syndrome management, colorectal surgery nurses require sufficient relevant knowledge and skills, but few studies have been conducted of their actual ability and practice of managing the syndrome. The study adopted a knowledge, attitude, and practice model to evaluate low anterior resection syndrome management among colorectal surgery nurses. METHOD: A multicenter cross-sectional study was conducted, in which 361 registered nurses in colorectal surgery from 6 hospitals in 4 cities were enrolled. A structured paper questionnaire was used to collect demographics, scale scores for knowledge, attitudes and management practice, and training needs. RESULTS: Participants scored poorly in knowledge, attitude, and practice. Whether training had been received or not was an important factor affecting the knowledge, attitude, and practice of nurses, and the majority of participants had not received training. Nurses with lower levels of education had worse knowledge and practice, and contract nurses scored lower than staff nurses in terms of knowledge and attitude. CONCLUSIONS: The critical role of nurses in patient management places high demands on their knowledge, attitude, and practice. However, the present study demonstrated that the current knowledge, attitude, and practice of colorectal surgery nurses regarding the syndrome gave cause for concern, and whether training had been received was a key factor affecting these three aspects. Therefore, training is a key strategy to eliminate the gaps identified.

BACKGROUND: Continuing professional development (CPD) is necessary for nurse registration and development. Understanding the factors influencing engagement may enhance CPD uptake. REVIEW QUESTION: What factors influence hospital-based nurses' engagement with CPD activities in the UK? DESIGN: This was a systematic review incorporating narrative synthesis. Database searches for published and grey literature from January 1995 to November 2018 were conducted via EBSCO Discovery Service, the British Nursing Index and the British Library. REVIEW METHODS: An approved systematic review protocol was followed with studies then assessed against strict inclusion and exclusion criteria. Included studies were critically appraised, data extracted and a narrative synthesis conducted. FINDINGS: Five studies were reviewed. Four themes emerged: nurses' individual resources, their professional motivation, organisational commitment to learning and development, and managerial support. CONCLUSION: Factors influencing nurses' engagement with activities are multifaceted and inter-woven. A question-based checklist to facilitate discussions between nurses and educators, managers or appraisers is presented.

BACKGROUND: Chronic obstructive pulmonary diseases (COPD) is the leading cause of respiratory failure and is associated with high morbidity and mortality rates. Nurses play a vital role in ensuring effective, safe, and person-centered care in COPD. AIM: To assess the effect of an evidence-based intervention in increasing the COPD knowledge in a sample of care nurses, staffing public primary, and secondary healthcare services infrastructures and hospitals. METHODS: An intervention that entailed a combination of an educational program and the use of an educational algorithm based on the Global Strategy for the Diagnosis, Management, and Prevention of COPD was performed. RESULTS: At the baseline, the mean total percentage of correct answers was very low (52.74%) as opposed to the other time intervals in which there was a huge increase after the session that was maintained 3 and 6 months later. The highest effect in the total knowledge score was attributed to the educational session followed by the use of the educational algorithm. CONCLUSION: The effect of the intervention on the mean score of correct answers was very strong, which is confirmed by the consistency of the high performance of nurses after 3 and 6 months, respectively.

Clinical nurses are in a crucial position to provide primary palliative care by advocating for patients and families at the end of life, collaborating with the health care team to optimize quality of life, and contributing to enhanced symptom management. Most clinical nurses, however, have not received the comprehensive palliative care education needed to provide high-quality palliative care. The End-of-Life Nursing Education Consortium curriculum can bridge this gap by providing nurses with the knowledge needed to promote palliative care. Following completion of an End-of-Life Education Consortium train-the-trainer program, 6 nurses from a large, metropolitan academic medical center designed and implemented a series of 20-minute educational sessions informed by a hospital-wide needs assessment and based on the End-of-Life Nursing Education Consortium curriculum. The educational sessions, Palliative Care Conversations, provide clinical nurses with the core palliative care knowledge and skills needed to advocate for and provide patient-/family-centered care throughout the serious illness trajectory and at end of life. This article describes the process, design, and content of the palliative care educational sessions.

BACKGROUND: Implementation of evidence-based practice (EBP) is necessary for healthcare systems to improve quality, safety, patient outcomes, and costs. Yet, EBP competency is lacking in many nurses and clinicians across the country. AIM: The purpose of this initiative was to determine whether nursing teams (Executive Leader, Clinical/Mid-level Leader, and Direct Care Nurse) attending a 5-day EBP continuing education skill-building program (immersion) was an effective strategy to build EBP competence, practice, and culture sustainability over time. The Advancing Research and Clinical Practice Through Close Collaboration Model was used to guide this initiative. METHODS: A project team was assembled, including leaders with EBP expertise from the Air Force Medical Service and The Helene Fuld Health Trust National Institute for EBP in Nursing and Healthcare at The Ohio State University. Five survey instruments were used to evaluate outcomes, including Organizational Culture and Readiness for System-Wide Implementation of Evidence-Based Practice, Evidence-Based Practice Beliefs, Evidence-Based Practice Implementation, and Evidence-Based Practice Competencies, as well as the Knowledge Assessment Questionnaire test. Nursing teams were invited to participate and complete the program with the implementation of EBP projects over the following year. RESULTS: Participants' EBP knowledge, skills, competencies, and beliefs were significantly improved and sustained over 12 months. LINKING EVIDENCE TO ACTION: A team-based EBP skill-building program was an effective strategy for building EBP competence, practice, and culture. This initiative demonstrated that the direct involvement of leadership and infrastructure to support EBP were crucial factors for building and sustaining an EBP culture.

Cerebrovascular accident is a serious public health problem and requires the attention of professionals who can detect, diagnose, and provide care in a timely fashion. A quantitative quasi-experimental study was conducted using a mobile app called mSmartAVC for clinical evaluation of nursing care at the bedside. The study aimed at measuring the knowledge of nurses and nursing students in the detection and care of cerebrovascular accident. In this study, a total of 115 nurses from health services in the South of Brazil and 35 nursing students of a community university participated. The stages focused on development, modeling of clinical cases, problem-based learning, pretest (before) app use, and posttest (after) use of the app. The results of the pretest and posttest corrections showed a substantial statistical difference (P < .001), indicating a significant knowledge gain after the use of the app, particularly in terms of the detection scales and interpretation of the imaging tests. The mSmartAVC app used at the bedside supported decision-making for detection and nursing care. It was possible to confirm that the use of mobile apps plays an essential role as a learning tool for nurses and nursing students.

BACKGROUND: The cultural competence education programme for health professionals aimed to ensure that all people receive effective health care, particularly those from culturally diverse backgrounds. OBJECTIVES: The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of a cultural competence educational course on nurses' self-assessment of their cultural competence. DESIGN: A single-blind, randomised control trial design was employed. PARTICIPANTS AND SETTINGS: Eligible nurses were recruited from a northern Taiwan medical centre with 2089 beds. METHODS: A permuted block of four was used to randomly assign participants to the experimental (n = 47) and control groups (n = 50). The educational course comprised four units and was conducted once weekly for four weeks, with each session lasting 3 h. RESULTS: A significant group-time interaction was identified regarding self-learning cultural ability, verifying the education intervention's effect on self-learning cultural ability after a two-month intervention. In addition, a significant main effect over time was discovered for total cultural competence; there was no significant interaction effect. CONCLUSIONS: The study provided evidence that an educational programme effectively improved cultural competence in clinical nurses. The results provide a reference for health care providers to design in-service cultural competence education for improving quality of care.

The study aimed to determine the perceived importance, impact, and challenges of CPD among educators in selected Colleges of Nursing. The study uses descriptive-evaluative, descriptive-comparative and descriptive-correlation research designs. Researcher-made questionnaire was used to capture the responses of 105 purposively selected nurse educators in the Philippines. For about three months, data was collected personally and analyzed using SPSS version 21. The result shows that the importance, impact, and challenges of CPD has a significant effect to the success of the CPD programs. The study reveals that the important CPD attributes and the impact of CPD programs can affect the success of the CPD programs

OBJECTIVE: To understand the perception of a multiprofessional team regarding the use of music in a therapeutic workshop developed by nurses. METHOD: Qualitative study, of the exploratory type. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews, with the participation of 13 professionals from a Psychosocial Care Center in a municipality of Minas Gerais' Zona da Mata, and analyzed according to Michel Maffesoli's comprehensive sociology approach. RESULTS: The testimonies revealed that the use of music in the nurse's activities in mental health represents a re-signification of nursing care and favors the user's subjectivity. FINAL CONSIDERATIONS: This study allowed us to show that nurses need to listen to the music that comes from the heart, from the soul, and to the truths that are not always stated in the scenarios of therapeutic practices with individuals going through psychic suffering. Therefore, the care offered should be centered on the human history, which wants to be unveiled and understood.

PURPOSE: The Wound Treatment Associate (WTA) program is an education offering of the WOCN Society. This evidence-based continuing education program prepares nurses to serve as a unit-based resource for nursing staff. The WTA program is approved by the American Nurses Credentialing Association (ANCC) for 32.25 contact hours and aimed at licensed health care personnel. This article focuses on the impact of this education program, in particular a reduction in hospital-acquired pressure injury (HAPI) in acute care and decrease in visits per episode (VPE) and supply costs in home health. METHODS: Surveys were sent to all course participants to date to fulfill the summative evaluation requirement for ANCC approval to determine the perception of improvement in knowledge, skills, and practice. An additional survey was developed and reviewed by members to send to WTA program course coordinators. RESULTS: Participants (n = 153) reported an increase in confidence in knowledge and skills about wound care and use in nursing practice. The number of respondents to the course coordinator survey was lower (n = 48). Coordinators did report a reduction in pressure injuries in acute care. Home health respondents noted a decrease in VPE and reduction in the cost of supplies. Data reported on abstracts and posters suggested positive impacts of pressure injury prevention programs in acute and home health care. CONCLUSIONS: Although there are limitations to the aforementioned reporting, incorporating the WTA program into pressure injury prevention programs and wound treatment programs showed a reduction in HAPIs in acute care and decreased VPE and supply costs in home health.

BACKGROUND: Standards endorsed by the Australian Resuscitation Council in 2014 recommend that healthcare providers trained in cardiopulmonary resuscitation should have their skills refreshed at least annually and for those who infrequently perform resuscitation, more frequent refresher training is advised. Emergency nurses were given the opportunity to attend workstations to refresh their knowledge and skills essential to resuscitation practice. The aim of this manuscript was to report the perception of the nurses' experience following attendance at the workstations. METHODS: Lesson plans were developed for six workstations. Consented participants were invited to complete an on-line evaluation survey of their experience following programme participation and at 6-months following programme attendance. Thematic analysis and descriptive statistics were used to report outcomes RESULTS: A total of 143 nurses working in the Emergency Department consented to participate. Following attendance at the workstations, most reported increased knowledge and skills (93.7 %), increased confidence (91.9 %) and that they practiced skills (91.9 %) during workstation participation. At 6-months follow-up the majority of nurses (97.1 %) found the programme to be beneficial and 82 (80.4 %) reported using the knowledge and skills gained from the programme in their clinical practice. CONCLUSIONS: Emergency nurses felt more confident in delivering patient care following attendance at the resuscitation workstations. Ongoing education was highly regarded by emergency nurses.

BACKGROUND: There is a disconnect between what maternity care providers consider should be done and what they actually do with respect to talking with their pregnant clients about reducing their risk of stillbirth. This suggests that they would benefit from receiving up-to-date knowledge about stillbirth, alongside education that provides them with strategies for talking about stillbirth with pregnant women. OBJECTIVES: To gain an understanding of maternity care provider (obstetricians and midwives) knowledge of stillbirth and determine whether delivering a half day workshop improves knowledge and results in intention to change practice. DESIGN: A pre-post intervention study. SETTING: Maternity care providers (Obstetricians, Midwives) working in the northern areas of Tasmania, Australia were asked, via questionnaire, about their knowledge of stillbirth both before and after attending a half-day workshop. PARTICIPANTS: Maternity care providers (n = 51) attended the workshop and 30 (59%) completed both the pre-workshop and post-workshop surveys. METHODS: A four hour interactive workshop grounded in understanding the stillbirth experience. Participants were given up-to-date information about stillbirth risks and current prevention research as well as provided with an actionable step wise approach to talking about stillbirth prevention in pregnancy. RESULTS: Stillbirth knowledge scores (total of 8-points) significantly increased following the workshop (pre: mean = 2.9 ± 1.5; post: mean = 4.7 ± 1.4 points, t 29 = 7.9, <0.001). Before the workshop, only 20% of participants responded that they "always" or usually" discussed the possibility stillbirth occurring with pregnant women in their care whereas, after the workshop, nearly all (88%) indicated that they planned to "always" discuss stillbirth with their pregnant clients. CONCLUSIONS: Attending a stillbirth awareness for prevention education workshop resulted in significant knowledge improvement and self-reported intention to change practice in a group of Australian maternity care providers. While these results are promising, further study is needed to determine the presence and extent of actual practice change following such education.

BACKGROUND: Nurses in emergency departments have to provide rescue care and life support for moribund patients, but also emotional support to patients' relatives. On the other hand, emergency nurses are also the most vulnerable to the sudden death of patients. Nurses working in the emergency department were invited to participate in a death education course. OBJECTIVE: To explore the impact of a death education course on the emergency nurses' perception of effective behavioral responses in dealing with sudden death. DESIGN: A quasi-experimental study. SETTINGS: A level A tertiary general hospital in China. PARTICIPANTS: A total number of 34 emergency nurses who met the inclusion criteria were randomly selected from the emergency department. METHODS: Participants received a death education course of 20 credit hours based on dealing with a sudden-death model. The general data questionnaire and the Chinese version of the list proposed by Fraser & Atkins were completed before the intervention and six weeks post-intervention. The scores of each item in the effective behavioral response to the sudden death questionnaire of the emergency nurses before and after the intervention were compared. RESULTS: After the intervention, the nurses considered that 10 items were relatively helpful (above 4 points) and 2 items relatively less helpful (<3 points). The post-intervention average scores of all items were higher than the pre-intervention ones, and there were significant differences in the scores of the 13 items pre- and post-intervention. CONCLUSION: The death education course enhanced emergency nurses' perceptions of effective behavioral responses in dealing with sudden death, which contributes to the improvement of the quality of their work.

BACKGROUND: The global health care system has applied case management (CM) as a care delivery service provided by nurses. Nurses require continuing education in CM to enhance their professional knowledge and competence. Mobile communities have been used to promote continuing education for medical professionals. However, limited studies have examined the effectiveness of such learning programmes in CM for psychiatric nurses. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the effectiveness of a mobile community learning (MCL) programme in CM for psychiatric nurses. DESIGN: This study used an experimental two-group pre- and post-test design. SETTINGS AND PARTICIPANTS: Psychiatric nurses employed in a psychiatric teaching hospital situated in northern Taiwan were recruited. METHODS: Nurses were randomly allocated to the experimental or comparison group. The former participated in the learning intervention in CM. The CM knowledge index and a competence scale were used to determine outcomes. Pre-tests and 2-month post-tests were conducted. The MCL programme comprised five simulated learning modules, self-assessment questions, learning cases, learning resources and experience sharing. A two-way repeated-measures analysis of variance was performed to evaluate the effect of the intervention on target outcomes. RESULTS: The questionnaires were completed by 48 participants. The two groups possessed high homogeneity with regard to characteristics and pre-test outcomes. Differences between the two groups regarding CM knowledge (F = 22.99, p < .01) and competence (F = 6.33, p = .015) were significant. The programme had a positive benefit on the learning experience in the experimental group; the mean satisfaction score for the programme reached 4.27 (range, 1-5). CONCLUSIONS: MCL programmes for psychiatric nurses can effectively enhance CM knowledge and competence. However, these methods cannot completely replace the continuing education approach for achieving CM competence.

BACKGROUND: Nurses caring for elderly patients with a high risk of pressure ulcer at long-term care hospitals require the necessary knowledge, behaviors, and attitudes regarding preventing pressure ulcers. OBJECTIVES: To identify the effects of pressure ulcer prevention training on nurses' knowledge, behaviors, and attitudes regarding pressure ulcer prevention. DESIGN: A comparison group pretest-posttest design. SETTINGS: Long-term care hospitals in a metropolitan area of the Republic of Korea. PARTICIPANTS: Participants were conveniently assigned to team-based learning (n = 30) or lecture-based learning (n = 30) groups. METHODS: We examined pre-post differences in the scores for pressure ulcer prevention knowledge, behaviors, and attitudes in each group using the paired t-test. Additionally, pre-post difference scores were compared between the two groups using the independent samples t-test. RESULTS: Both groups exhibited significant increases in scores for pressure ulcer prevention knowledge, behaviors, and attitudes after the intervention as compared before it. However, we found no significant differences in the pre-post difference scores for any of the variables between the two groups. CONCLUSIONS: Pressure ulcer prevention training, regardless of whether it utilizes team-based or lecture-based learning, is useful for enhancing nurses' pressure ulcer prevention knowledge, behaviors, and attitudes. Further study is needed to verify the longitudinal effects of pressure ulcer prevention training on nurses' actual performance and the incidence of pressure ulcers among patients.
