RESUMEN

Background: There have been many testicular losses due to testicular compartment syndrome (TCS). Studies are ongoing to lower the pressure within tunica vaginalis during TCS. Aims: To provide enough space for reperfusion of the testicular tissue and to reduce intratesticular pressure by resecting testicular tissue in the affected testis for treatment of TCS. Materials and Methods: The study was designed as a prospective randomized animal study. A total of 24 Wistar albino adult rats were randomly divided into three groups. After torsion surgery group 1 underwent detorsion + testicular tissue resection (TTR), while only detorsion was performed in group 2. The control group did not undergo any procedures. At the postoperative 5th day all subjects were sacrificed, and their testes were evaluated in terms of histologic findings, apoptosis, and microangiogenesis. One-way ANOVA and Tukey's test were used for analysis. Results: According to Johnsen scores, all the groups were statistically different from each other and the damage in group 1 was less than in group 2 (P < 0.05). Factor VIII expressions in surgical groups were significantly higher than in the control group (P < 0.05). However, the surgical groups did not show any significant difference between each other (P > 0.05). Apoptotic cell counts were higher in both surgical groups than in the control group. Also, there was significantly higher apoptotic cell count in group 2 than in group 1 (P < 0.05). Conclusions: The injury secondary to TCS is lower when TTR is performed. In the cases in which tunica vaginalis graft could not be obtained or in the delayed cases, TTR may be useful.

RESUMEN

OBJECTIVES: The effectiveness of the myo-inositol oxygenase (MIOX) enzyme was investigated in the diagnosis of acute kidney injury (AKI). METHODS: In total, 40 rats were divided into 5 groups (n = 8, for each group) while left kidney ischemia-reperfusion was implemented in groups 2, 3, 4 and 5. Group 1 was the control group. Group 2 underwent 1hour ischemia and 2hour reperfusion. Group 3 underwent 1hour ischemia and 4hour reperfusion. Group 4 underwent 2hour ischemia and 2hour reperfusion. Group 5 underwent 2hour ischemia and 4hour reperfusion. RESULTS: Serum creatinine and blood urea nitrogen levels in all ischemia-reperfusion groups were higher than in the control group (p<0.001). Serum MIOX level was higher in groups 2, 3 and 4 than in group 1 (p=0.002). Tissue MIOX level was lower in groups 2, 4, and 5 than in group 1 (p=0.039). Serum and tissue neutrophil gelatinase-associated lipocalin levels were not significantly different between the groups. The injury level in histopathologic examination was as follows: group 1

RESUMEN

The aim of the present study was to determine the effects of Luteolin (LUT) on semen quality, oxidative stress, apoptosis, acrosomal integrity, mitochondrial membrane potential and dead sperm ratio in rabbits. Ejaculates from six New Zealand rabbits were collected, evaluated and pooled. The pooling was divided into five groups as control (no additive) LUT 25 µM, LUT 50 µM, LUT 100 µM and LUT 200 µM and LUT added. It was then filled into a falcon tube with Tris-based extender at a final concentration of approximately 35 x 106 spermatozoa. Diluated rabbit semen samples were drawn into frozen and thawed. Frozen semen straws were thawed at 37°C in 30 seconds. According to our findings, no statistical difference was found between all doses of luteolin and the control group in the CASA (computer assisted sperm analysis) analysis performed at 4°C. However, total motility, progressive motility and rapid sperm percentage were found to be higher in the frozen and thawed rabbit semen at a dose of LUT 50 µM compared to the other groups (p⟨0.05). While amplitude of lateral head displacement (ALH) and beat cross-frequency (BCF) values were found at the lowest dose of LUT 200 µM, a statistically significant difference was observed between the other groups. When the flow cytometry results were examined, no statistical difference was found between the rate of dead sperm, acrosomal integrity, mitochondrial membrane potential and apoptosis rate. Morever, the H2 O2 percentage was found to be lower in all experimental groups compared to the control group (p⟨0.001). In conclusion, the addition of LUT in long-term storage of rabbit semen provided a protective effect for spermatozoa with its antioxidative properties against damage caused by cryopreservation.

RESUMEN

Cancer is a common cause of death worldwide. Approximately 80% of cancer patients use complementary or alternative medicines for treatment. Caffeic acid phenethyl ester (CAPE), the main active component of propolis, exhibits cytotoxic, antiproliferative and anti-cancer effects. Despite its anticancer effects CAPE exhibits no known harmful effects toward normal cells. We investigated the effects of CAPE on angiogenesis, apoptosis and oxidative stress using MDA MB-231, N2a and COLO 320 cell lines and CAPE treatments at 24 and 48 h. A two dimensional cell culture system was used and the findings were evaluated by an indirect immunohistochemical method and H-scores were calculated. CAPE was effective for all three cancer cell lines. After 24 and 48 h, we found a significant decrease in live cells and increased stress in the cells based on e-NOS and i-NOS levels.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND AND AIM: Herbal treatments are becoming increasingly popular in many countries. Anchusa Boraginaceae (also called Tort plant and beef tongue) is commonly used as a herbal medicine in Elazig region as diuretic and in the treatment of ulcers, and it is stated that this has no adverse effect. We report a case of acute hepatitis associated with long time use of high doses of Anchusa Boraginaceae. CASE: A 43-year-old male patient is drinking water of Anchusa Boraginaceae that is boiling for 14 days to dissolve the stones in the gallbladder. He had no medical history and did not take any other drugs or toxins. Two weeks later ; he admitted with developed tea colored like urine and yellowing of the body. Three weeks later; he was referred to the our department from the epicenter. Blood tests showed aspartate aminotransferase : 37 U/L, alanine aminotransferase : 66 U/L, gama glutamyl transferase : 23 U/L, total bilirubin : 16.9 mg/dL, direct bilirubin : 12 mg/dL, and INR : 1.3 Viral and autoimmune hepatitis were eliminated. Upper abdominal ultrasound was normal. After the herbal medicine was stopped on admission, the patient's laboratory tests didn't recover. Then; the support treatment was performed. The clinical and the laboratory values returned to normal after 2 months after the acute episode. CONCLUSIONS: The consumption of herbal medicines containing Anchusa Boraginaceae can induce toxic hepatitis. Recovery can be complete after discontinuation. This case report highlights the risk and lytic effect on gallstone associated with Anchusa Boraginaceae.
