RESUMO

Technology-enabled services (TESs) are clinical interventions that combine technological and human components to provide health services. TESs for mental health are efficacious in the treatment of anxiety and depression and are currently being offered as frontline treatments around the world. It is hoped that these interventions will be able to reach diverse populations across a range of identities and ultimately decrease disparities in mental health treatment. However, this hope is largely unrealized. TESs include both technology and human service components, and we argue that cultural responsivity must be considered in each of these components to help address existing treatment disparities. To date, there is limited guidance on how to consider cultural responsivity within these interventions, including specific targets for the development, tailoring, or design of the technologies and services within TESs. In response, we propose a framework that provides specific recommendations for targets based on existing models, both at the technological component level (informed by the Behavioral Intervention Technology Model) and the human support level (informed by the Efficiency Model of Support). We hope that integrating culturally responsive considerations into these existing models will facilitate increased attention to cultural responsivity within TESs to ensure they are ethical and responsive for everyone.

RESUMO

Addiction is a multidimensional issue affecting North American, Indigenous peoples. Most federal and provincial-funded treatment programs follow a Western model. We argue for more comprehensive culturally responsive training for workers, and the concept of neurodecolonization be covered. We also call for developing policy within education, licensing bodies, and front-line organizations for a working knowledge of the historical and racial contexts affecting Indigenous peoples. These policies must engage with the Kehte-ayak (Old Ones), while harmonizing Indigenous and Western knowledge systems that incorporate contemplative practices such as Indigenous ceremonies and neurodecolonzation approaches to healing.

PURPOSE: The goal of the current study was to examine the role of variety and frequency of dialectal features in relation to General American English (GAE) editing ability. This study focused on speakers of dialect-specific forms and their ability to edit to GAE. To gain insight into this relation, the following research questions were posed: (1). How do third and fifth-grade students differ in the variety of features of dialect-specific forms they use, the frequency of their use, and their editing ability to GAE? (2). Is there a significant relation between dialect use and editing ability? METHODS: Participants included 68 third and fifth-grade students who produced at least one dialect-specific form. We measured students' ability to edit to GAE during a written editing task. Frequency and variety of dialect use were based on an oral language sample where students were asked to share their favorite game or sport. RESULTS: Fifth-grade students are significantly better at editing written dialect specific forms to reflect GAE writing conventions as compared to third-grade students. However, there was not a significant difference in the dialect specific form usage between the two grades. Finally, there was not a significant relation between dialect specific form use and editing ability. CONCLUSIONS: These results offer relevant clinical and educational implications for increasing cultural responsivity and promote the use of multiple measures across modalities to gain relevant information when assessing students who use dialect specific forms. Further, the results from this study provide further insights into how written editing ability exhibited through the awareness of GAE conventions improves with age despite the influence of dialect specific forms.

RESUMO

Peer volunteers have been found to be effective in delivering psychosocial interventions when they come from the same culture and share similar experiences as participants. We examined the clinical utility (feasibility and preliminary effectiveness) of a community-based, manualized, peer-delivered group counselling program to address the need for culturally responsive counselling for parents of children with autism in the South Asian community. Sixty-three parents (Mage = 43.7 years, 68% mothers) participated in the program, and reported high stable program satisfaction across sessions. Further, parents reported improved mental health and quality of life following involvement in the program, with changes noted even after the first session. Further research is warranted to assess the efficacy of this kind of parent support intervention.
