The study aimed at evaluating the testicular structure and spermatogenesis of Santa Inês and Santa Inês and Dorper crossbred sheep. Sixteen testicles of the animals under study were used, in order to evaluate the volumetric proportion, the diameter of the tubules, the height of seminiferous epithelium, the frequency of stages of the seminiferous epithelium cycle and the spermatogenic yield. The data were submitted to Student-Newman-Keulstestat 5% significance. The tubular diameter was 173.12 ± 29.09 μm and 185.71 ± 29.7 μm, and the height of the seminiferous epithelium was 52.29 ± 9.98μm and 56.68 ± 11.25 μ m, for the crossbred and the Santa Inês, respectively. There was no difference between the testicular compartments and the frequency of the stages of the seminiferous epithelium cycle between the groups. Santa Inês sheep presented a number of 15.36 ± 4.49 spermatocytes in the pre-leptotene/leptotene stage and 27.42 ± 6.65 spermatocytes in the pachytene, whereas the crossbred presented 13.18 ± 5.19 and 23.48 ± 7.80, respectively. The crossbred showed higher meiotic yield (3.98 ± 1.28) and spermatogenesis yield (3.71 ± 1.02). It is concluded there are differences in testicular morphology and spermatogenesis between Santa Inês sheep and crossbred Dorper/Santa Inês, indicating that the crossbreeding between the Santa Inês and Dorper animals allows a gain in the reproductive potential.

Enterobacteriaceae can be present in the environment and in the intestine of warmblooded animals. This study aimed to isolate and identify enterobacteria in informally marketed milk in cities of South of the Piaui. 52 milk samples were acquired at different points of Bom Jesus, Redenção do Gurguéia, Santa Luz and Cristino Castro, Piaui, which were taken into Styrofoam containing ice to food microbiology laboratory of the Federal University of Piauí, in Bom Jesus, where held the bacterial isolation in MacConkey, EMB and XLD. The conclusive biochemical identification and agglutination test was held at the Enterobacteria Laboratory of FIOCRUZ, (Rio de Janeiro-RJ). From the 37 strains, identified the species Escherichia coli, Enterobacter cloacae, Enterobacter gergoviae, Enterobacter aerogenes, Klebsiella pneumoniae, Citrobater freundii, Providencia rettigeri and Serratia marcescens. The informally marketed milk is contaminated by Enterobacteriaceae that can be pathogenic and should be taken preventive measures, such as pasteurization of milk.

Mucoceles are benign pseudocystic lesions caused by the rupture or obstruction of the salivary glands and their matching excretory ducts. This disease leads to the accumulation of mucus in the connective tissue. Affected patients may be asymptomatic or present anorexia, getting vulnerable to secondary diseases. The recommended treatment is the surgical removal of the salivary gland and the connection of the involved duct; this process is essencial to avoid recurrences and to provide a favorable prognosis to the patient. Due to the fact that it is an unusual occurrence in dogs, this work has as objective to present a case report about the mucocele’s appearence in such species, achieving the definitive diagnosis by fine-needle aspiration cytology of the affected area.

Meat is a great medium for the growth of microorganisms and may be responsible for transmission of pathogenic bacteria to man. Among its products, ground beef has highlighted to be a low-cost product and easy to prepare, however, that food is a great culture medium due to factors that favor the multiplication of microorganisms that can cause infections. This study evaluated the sanitary conditions of ground beef sold in Bom Jesus, PI, by counting of mesophilic aerobic bacteria. It was concluded that the released ground beef in Bom Jesus-PI, is produced under unsatisfactory higienic conditions and their consumption may pose a risk to consumer health.
