Hormonal methodologies to control small ruminants' estrous cycle are worldwide used and evolved, adjusting the application to the precise female physiological moments to enhance reproductive performance. The estrous cycle can be induced and/or synchronized, aiming for fixed-time artificial insemination, or based on estrus behavior signs for insemination, natural or guided mating. Successive protocols can be performed to resynchronize ovulation and increase reproductive outcomes in females that failed to conceive. These recently developed treatments aim to resynchronize the ovulation as earlier as non-pregnancy is detected. The present review aimed to summarize the recent advances and main findings regarding resynchronization protocols used in small ruminants. Lastly, we present future perspectives and new paths to be studied in the subject. The resynchronization treatment is still a growing field in small ruminant reproduction, nevertheless, some enhancements are found in the reproductive outcome, showing that such protocols can be successfully used in sheep and goat production.(AU)

Background: Pyometra is a bacterial and hormone-induced reproductive disease that occurs in the post-estrus luteal phase in intact queens. Pyometra is more common in the diestrus period due to the high progesterone concentration (in queens that mated, spontaneously ovulated, or were induced to ovulate). However, it can also be seen due to the use of exogenous hormones such as progesterone for the suppression of estrus. More research is needed in cases of pyometra in queens, as well as in bitches. Because, considering that the pathogenesis and characteristics of feline pyometra is similar to bitches, studies on pyometra-affected bitches are taken as reference in studies and applications on queens. From this point of view, the aims of this study were to reveal the changes in complete blood count, blood gas, and serum biochemistry parameters in feline pyometra cases and to determine the correlation between the mentioned parameters. Materials, Methods & Results: In the study, a total of 25 female cats of different breeds were used, between the ages of 6 months and 7 years, 15 were diagnosed with pyometra, and 10 healthy. Anamnesis, clinical findings, and ultrasonographic examinations were used in the diagnosis of pyometra. Abdominal ultrasonography was performed on queens brought to the clinic with complaints such as anorexia, polydipsia, polyuria, abdominal tension, and fever. The control group (n =10) consisted of queens that were introduced to the clinic and were reproductively healthy. Before any treatment in queens with pyometra and the control group, 1 mL blood samples were taken from v. cephalica to evaluate complete blood count, blood gases and serum biochemistry parameters. In complete WBC, Lym, Mon, Gra, RBC, Hb, HCT, MCV, MCH and PLT parameters and, blood gas parameters such as pH, pCO2 , pO2 , sO2 , Na, K, Cl, lactate, glucose, HCO3 , and BE were also evaluated in taken blood samples. Biochemical parameters BUN, creatinine, ALT, AST, ALP, amylase, T.BIL, D.BIL, P, CHOL, TG, LDH, TP, CPK, ALP, Ca, GGT were measured in serum samples. After examination and laboratory analysis, ovariohysterectomy was performed on queens as a treatment. Granulocyte, WBC, HCT and MCH levels of the pyometra group were higher (P < 0.05) and Lym levels were lower (P < 0.05) compared to the control group. According to these results, pH, HCO3 , and BE were lower (P < 0.05) in queens with pyometra than those in the control group, while Na and lactate parameters were higher (P < 0.05). According to the results of biochemical analysis, it was determined that BUN, creatinine levels, GGT, and LDH enzyme activities were found to be higher in the pyometra group compared to the control group, while the Ca level was found to be low (P < 0.05). A positive correlation was observed between BUN and creatinine and LDH, WBC, granulocyte, HCT, and lactate, and a negative correlation between lymphocytes, pH, and BE in the correlation analysis performed on queens with pyometra and control group. However, a positive correlation was observed between creatinine and LDH and HCT, and a negative correlation between lymphocyte, pH and BE. Discussion: There is not enough information about pyometra in queens. As a result, it was determined that there were significant changes in complete blood count, blood gases and serum biochemical parameters in queens with pyometra in this study. These changes were generally thought to be related to dehydration and sepsis or endotoxemia. In addition, it was evaluated that prerenal azotemia occurring in pyometra affected queens may cause renal dysfunction. For this reason, it is thought that the results obtained in the presented study may contribute to the diagnosis, treatment, and prognosis of pyometra cases in queens.

Animals that exhibited estrus had greater pregnancy success compared to animals that did not exhibit estrus before fixed-time AI (FTAI). Estradiol is synthesized in bovine ovarian follicles under gonadotropin regulation and can directly and indirectly regulate the uterine receptivity and luteal function. Estradiol concentrations at FTAI impacted oviductal gene expression and has been reported to play an important role in establishing the timing of uterine receptivity. These changes have been reported to impact uterine pH and sperm transport to the site of fertilization. After fertilization, preovulatory estradiol has been reported to improve embryo survival likely by mediating changes in uterine blood flow, endometrial thickness and changes in histotroph. Cows with greater estradiol concentrations at the time of GnRH-induced ovulation also had a larger dominant follicle size and greater circulating progesterone concentrations on day 7. Therefore, it is impossible to accurately determine the individual benefit of greater estradiol concentrations prior to ovulation and greater progesterone concentrations following ovulation to pregnancy establishment, as these two measurements are confounded. Research has indicated an importance in the occurrence and timing of increasing preovulatory concentrations of estradiol, but increasing estradiol concentrations by supplementation may not be sufficient to increase fertility. Increased production of estradiol by the preovulatory follicle may be required to enhance fertility through the regulation of sperm transport, fertilization, oviductal secretions, the uterine environment, and embryo survival.(AU)

This study assessed the effects of social dominance on the behavioral estrus and ovarian parameters of dairy goats subjected to synchronous estrus induction during the non-breeding season. Synchronous estrus was induced in 23 dairy goats allocated to collective pens. Ovarian ultrasonography was performed at 12 h intervals from device removal to ovulation. Upon estrus onset (EO) detection, the goats were immediately removed from the pens. Dominance was scored according to EO in relation to device removal in each pen, with HD - high dominants (<36 h; n = 8), MD - medium dominants (36 to 48 h; n = 10) and LD - low dominants (>48 h; n = 5). Goats in estrus underwent flexible time artificial insemination (FxTAI) according to EO. The estrus response was 100.0%. The interval to estrus was longer (P<0.05) in LD (53.7 ± 6.5 h) than in MD (37.9 ± 5.5 h) and HD goats (32.3 ± 6.6 h), while the interval from device removal to ovulation was similar (P>0.05) among all groups. The interval from EO to FxTAI was longer in HD goats compared to the other groups (P<0.05). In conclusion, although social hierarchy influenced the time of EO, the ovarian parameters, including ovulation, were not affected.

Background: Elective ovariohysterectomy (OH) is minimally invasive, but when performed incorrectly, it can lead to postsurgical complications, such as stump pyometra, ovarian remnant syndrome and foci of adhesion generated by tissue reactions to threads and materials used in vessel hemostasis. The formation of adhesions and successive surgeries predisposes patients to other diseases, such as ureteral obstruction and hydronephrosis. Thus, we reported a case of hydronephrosis in a bitch submitted to conventional OH, followed by ovariectomy (OV) due to ovarian remnant syndrome and consequent intraperitoneal adhesions caused by successive surgical interventions. Case: A 11-year-old mixed breed medium size bitch with a history of stump pyometra and ovarian remnant syndrome (SOR) was treated at the Veterinary Hospital-HV of UFPA after 2 previous surgeries. It had been spayed using conventional OH and underwent ovariectomy OV approximately 4 years ago, as it showed signs of estrus after the first surgery, characterizing SOR. On physical examination, its abdomen was distended especially in the left hemiabdomen, with no palpable pain. Ultrasonography showed a cavity in the topographic area of the left kidney, with anechoic content, thin walls, and defined contour. There were nonvascularized tubular structures, suggesting hydroureter and severe hydronephrosis. Exploratory celiotomy was performed, showing the intense presence of abdominal adhesions, followed by an incision in the abdominal midline from the xiphoid process in a caudal direction to the pubis, thereby showing the left kidney. After vesical drainage of 900 mL of renal filtrate, atrophy of the renal parenchyma and preservation of the renal capsule was considered, resulting in its complete resection, followed by the synthesis of the abdominal wall. In the postoperative period, the patient was properly monitored and obtained a satisfactory outcome manifested by a complete recovery. After vesical drainage of 900 mL of renal filtrate, atrophy of the renal parenchyma and preservation of the renal capsule only was considered, resulting in its complete resection, followed by the synthesis of the abdominal wall. In the postoperative period, the patient was properly monitored and obtained a satisfactory outcome manifested by a complete recovery. After vesical drainage of 900 mL of renal filtrate, renal parenchymal atrophy and preservation of the renal capsule only was adopted. Discussion: The choice of the conventional OH technique, followed by the failure to perform, favored the formation of adhesions only diagnosed late. Less invasive alternatives achieved less long-term damage. Excessive intracavitary manipulation and reaction to the nylon suture thread favored the development of these adhesions, and consequently, unilateral obstruction of the left ureter, hydroureter, hypertrophy, and destruction of the renal parenchyma, led the patient to undergo a third surgery, namely, unilateral nephrectomy. In this case, no changes were observed in serum levels, leaving only a subtle abdominal enlargement with hydronephrosis installed silently. There was no possibility of carrying out initial surgical planning, as the affected kidney, making unilateral nephrectomy necessary. Currently, the patient has normal renal function in the contralateral organ, with no clinical or laboratory changes because the affected kidney was not functional, making unilateral nephrectomy necessary. Currently, the patient has normal renal function with no clinical or laboratory changes because the affected kidney was not functional, making unilateral nephrectomy necessary. Currently, the patient has normal renal function in the contralateral organ, with no clinical or laboratory changes.

Abstract In several species, mating reduces the estrous length and advances ovulation. The aim of this study was to determine if multiple matings reduces the estrous length and modifies the moment of ovulation, as well as the estradiol and LH patterns in ewes. The estrous cycle of Corriedale ewes was synchronized, and the onset of receptivity was monitored every 3 h with rams, avoiding mating. At the estrous onset, ewes were assigned to two experimental groups (n=10 each): 1) estrous was monitored every 3 h with a ram avoiding mating (group CON), and 2) a ram was allowed to mate and ejaculate once every 3 h (group MAT). The ovaries were scanned with transrectal ultrasonography and blood samples were collected for measuring 17β-estradiol and LH concentrations every 3 h until ovulation. Estrus was shorter in MAT than CON ewes (24.7 ± 1.5 h vs. 30.4 ± 1.5 h, respectively; P=0.02); the proportion of animals that ovulated before the end of estrus was greater in CON ewes: (9/10 vs. 3/10, P=0.009). The area under the LH curve (AUC) was greater in MAT than CON ewes (36.1 ± 3.5 ng.h-1.mL-1 vs 24.9 ± 3.5 ng.h-1.mL-1 P=0.03). However, MAT ewes had a lower 17β-estradiol AUC than CON ewes (41.0 ± 4.9 pg.h-1.mL-1 vs 59.4 ± 4.9 pg.h-1.mL-1 P=0.01). Mating reduced the estrous length, induced a greater secretion of LH but less total 17β-estradiol secreted and, additionally, ovulation occurred more frequently after the end of estrus in mated ewes.

The release of endometrial prostaglandin-F2α (PGF2α) in bovine females can be induced in vivo by estradiol (E2). However, its role in this mechanism has not been clarified. We hypothesized that E2 stimulates the activity and abundance of protein kinase C (PKC) and phospholipase A2 (PLA2). Our objective in this study was to analyze the effects of PKC and PLA2 inhibitors on PGF2α synthesis induced by E2 and calcium ionophore (CI) in bovine endometrial cells (BEND cells; Experiment 1). Additionally, we evaluated the abundance of PKC and PLA2 in endometrial explants of cows treated or not with E2 17 days after estrus (D17, D0 = estrus; Experiment 2). In Experiment 1, BEND cells were submitted to a PKC inhibitor (10 µM of C25H24N4O2; bisindolylmaleimide I, or BIS I), a PLA2 inhibitor (20 µM of arachydoniltrifluoromethane or AACOCF3), or none. The BEND cells were subsequently treated with E2 and CI, and PGF2α concentrations were measured in the culture medium through radioimmunoassay. For DIF-12 (PGF2α concentration 12 h after treatment subtracted from PGF2α concentration at hour 0), no PKC inhibitor effect was observed (P= 0.2709). However, DIF-12 was lower (P < 0.05) for groups treated with the PLA2 inhibitor and PLA2 inhibitor + CI + E2 groups than the control and CI + E2 groups. Thus, AACOCF3 was an efficient PLA2 inhibitor in the BEND cells culture system, and E2 did not stimulate the synthesis of PKC and PLA2. In Experiment 2, cyclic Nellore heifers received none (n = 5) or 3 mg (n = 6) of 17ß-E2 on D17 and were slaughtered 2 h after administration. The abundance of PKC and PLA2 in the endometrial tissue was evaluated using Western blotting analysis. No E2 effect was observed on PKC (P = 0.08) and PLA2 (P = 0.56). We concluded that E2 did not stimulate the activity and abundance of PKC and PLA2.(AU)

Both were given an application of estradiol benzoate (Sincrodiol® ) on day 0 (D0). From D0 to D7, 1 mg/female/day of oral MGA® Premix was fractionated in two administrations (0.5 mg morning and 0.5mg afternoon) mixed with banana. On D8, a PGF2α analogue were given intramuscularly (Cloprostenol - Ciosin® ). After treatment, behavioural estrus was evaluated with the aid of a male of the respective species from D9 to D13, initially every six hours then every four hours after the onset of behavioural estrus. The two females showed behavioural estrus on days 12 and 13. In the Mazama nana, the behavioral estrus had duration of approximately 16 hours and in the Mazama nemorivaga 20 hours. The results obtained in this study suggest the efficacy of 1.0 mg/female/day of MGA fractionated in two doses for the estrus manipulation in deer-short-hand and deer-purple females, since both showed behavioural estrus four days after the proposed synchronization protocol.

Understanding the cat's reproductive physiology is important to better know the species, as well as to deal with wild cats and feral cat populations. Thus, the purpose of this review is to make some considerations about the queen's reproduction that is seasonal polyestric with different stages of the estrous cycle. She is considered to have induced ovulation, with copulation triggering the release of luteinizing hormone (LH). However, in some circumstances, some queens are able to spontaneously ovulate. The induced ovulation in the queen is dependent on several factors: the number of matings and the intervals between them, the day of the estrus on which she is mates and individual differences in the LH peak. If the queen ovulates, but does not gestate, she will go into pseudo-pregnancy similar to pregnancy in the first 40 days. After 40 days, plasma progesterone levels will be back to almost basal level in the pseudo-pregnant queen, due to luteal regression. If the queen is mated and becomes pregnant, she will go through a phase dominated by progesterone longer than during pseudo-pregnancy. It is not yet clear whether her placenta is responsible for the production of progesterone that maintains pregnancy after the start of luteal regression. Thus, it is concluded that the reproductive processes of the queen are not fully mapped. Therefore, more research is needed for a more complete understanding of your reproductive physiology.

Mammary neoplasms are the most frequent cancer in bitches and mostly of them are malignant. Among the main causes of these neoplasms are the genetic factor, age, late ovariohysterectomy, obesity and contraceptive use. Although the use of contraceptives in female dogs and cats is extremely harmful and can lead to various problems such as uterine infections and mammary cancer, in Brazil its marketing in veterinary establishments is considerably high, perhaps because many tutors consider it a cheaper way to birth control as compared to castration. The sales profile of contraceptives in veterinary establishments in the Sao Paulo state was evaluated in relation to the percentage of establishments that prescribe these medications as well as the way they are prescribed. Fifty veterinary establishments were interviewed through questionnaires, 90% said they sell the product, 50% answered that the sale is made whenever the owner requests the use of the drug, 26.7% only indicate use before each estrus and 8,9% in case of unwanted pregnancy; 77% administer the same dose regardless of the animal's weight; About the sterilization´s indication, 87% of respondents said they indicated; 16% said they did not advise tutors about the possible risks and complications of administering these contraceptives. Despite all the risks of contraceptives, their sale is still very common in veterinary establishments due to the affordable price, often without the guidance of an appropriate professional explaining about the risk to animal health.

The present study evaluated the effects of puberty induction and live weight on reproductive performance in two-year-old heifers. At the beginning of the experiment the animals were individually identified, weighed and evaluated for body condition score. At the moment two random groups were formed, Group I (Control) 147 untreated animals and Group II (InducedTreatment) 149 animals with previous induction through an injectable progesterone and estradiol source. For analysis of the results the animals were stratified into four weight ranges obtained at the beginning of the experiment. Range I- up to 250kg; II- from 251 to 275kg; III- from 276 to 300kg; IV- over 300kg. The analysis of the results between Groups I and II for the percentage of inseminated animals was 26.5% and 37.6% of heifers (p <0.05), respectively. The analysis of the response to artificial insemination (AI) by weight range resulted in significant difference in weight range I with superiority for the induced group, being inseminated respectively 0% and 23.81% (p<0.05). Pregnancy rates for AI and TAI did not differ between groups (p> 0.05). By analyzing the final pregnancy by weight range and between control and induced heifers, a significant difference(p <0.05) was found in weight range III, with superiority for the control group, resulting in 79.7% and 61,5%, of pregnant heifers respectively for the control and induced groups. The results prove the importance of the weight at the beginning of the mating season on the reproductive result in beef heifers. The induction to previous puberty was not able to improve the pregnancy rate in beef heifers, however when analyzed the rate of heifers that presented estrus during artificial insemination had better results with the induced group.(AU)

The objective of this experiment was to evaluate estrous synchronization responses and pregnancy rates of beef cows treated with melengestrol acetate (MGA) and estradiol cypionate (ECP). Forty lactating Caracu cows (a locally adapted Bostaurus taurus breed) grazing on Panicum maximum cv. Tanzania and supplemented with corn silage received the equivalent of 0.5 mg/animal/day of MGA for 14 days. On day 5, the animals were randomly assigned to one of two groups: group 1 (n=21) received an im injection of 2.0 mg ECP and group 2 (n=19) received 2 ml saline. Animals of group 1 that exhibited estrus within 120 hours after withdrawal of MGA were inseminated (AI), while animals of group 2 were treated with cloprostenol 17 days after MGA removal and were inseminated during induced estrus. In both groups, cows without estrus detection during the day stayed with a bull at night for possible mating. Pregnancy was diagnosed by ultrasound examination 40 days after AI. Chi-square analyses were used to detect differences between groups. Eight (38.1%) animals of group 1 and 7 (36.8%) of group 2 showed estrus after withdrawal of MGA (P>0.05). The conception rates in groups 1 and 2 were, respectively, 37.5% and 50.0% for inseminated cows and 58.3% and 64.3% for for inseminated cows in addition to mated by the bull at night (P>0.05). These results suggest that it is possible to use the first estrus of females treated with ECP on day 5 of a 14-day MGA treatment. Furthermore, considering the large number of cows mated by the bull at night, it is recommended to use estrus detection tools as an aid for the identification of such animals or to combine AI and bulls for breeding.

The four species of New World camelids and 2 species of Old World camelids derived from a common ancestor in North America. The reproductive characteristics, particularly those involving ovarian function and ovulation, are remarkably similar among the 6 living species of camelids, so much so that interspecies hybrids of nearly all possible combinations have been documented. Camelids are induced-ovulators, triggered by an ovulation-inducing factor in seminal plasma. The timing and mechanism of endocrine events leading to ovulation are discussed, as well as the discovery, identification and mode of action of the seminal factor responsible. The applied aspects of our present understanding are discussed with specific reference to controlled induction of ovulation, ovarian synchronization, and superovulation. Emphasis has been given to the literature on llamas and alpacas, with some reference to studies done in wild species of South American camelids and Old World camels.
