RESUMO

A research fellowship geared toward registered practical nurses was designed to support the nurse's knowledge development in practice-based research. In this paper, we describe a six-month fellowship experience, which comprised research education, application and mentorship. Through the implementation of the research fellowship, we identified six components necessary for success, which include program infrastructure, application of training and leadership development. The research fellowship framework can support nurse leaders in the professional development of their nursing staff through building research capacity. Our fellowship description can also help guide the implementation of similar initiatives at other acute care sites.

RESUMO

AIMS: In 2018 the National Institute of Health and Care Research, United Kingdom, launched a 3-year Senior Nurse and Midwife Research Leader Programme to support nurse and midwifery research leaders to develop research capacity and capability within NHS organisations. We report the results of a service evaluation of the programme strengths, areas for improvement and achievement of programme aims. DESIGN: Partially mixed, concurrent mixed methods programme evaluation, including: (a) meeting evaluation (survey), (b) annual evaluation (survey) and (c) qualitative stakeholder interviews. METHODS: Survey results were quantitatively analysed using descriptive statistics. Interviews were audio-recorded, transcribed, deductively coded using elements within the logic model and analysed using the seven-stage framework analysis method. RESULTS: Satisfaction with the programme was high (75%). The main perceived benefit of the programme was being part of a network. Challenges included accessing learning resources, lack of opportunity to network and lack of clarity about the programme aims. Meetings were evaluated as relevant and helpful (mean 93%), thought-provoking (92%), inspiring (91%), at the appropriate level (91%) and aligned with the programme aims (90%). All meetings were ranked as highly beneficial by attendees (92%). Stakeholder feedback on the programme success reflected the importance of leadership, the programme design and content, 'connection and community' and communication with and about the cohort. Overall, the anticipated programme aims were met, evaluating well from both the perspective of those on the programme and the wider stakeholder group. There has been a lack of investment in schemes to support research leadership development for nurses/midwives. A novel programme to support nursing/midwifery research leadership was positively evaluated. The programme is a useful model to support future capacity and capability building for nurses/midwives. The work is reported with reference to the SQUIRE 2 and SRQR checklists. No patient or public contribution.

RESUMO

The 20th century began a period of reform in nursing education and practice, with more nurses receiving advanced degrees and serving in key leadership roles throughout healthcare organizations. During this period, the transformation of the healthcare delivery system encouraged innovation and collaboration between academic nursing programs and other healthcare entities to develop partnerships based on a shared vision and goals. As a result, nurses are negotiating academic-practice partnership agreements and leading interprofessional teams to meet the needs of collaborating organizations. This article describes a stepwise approach to building a research-focused academic practice partnership, from a needs assessment to an evaluation of the partnership.

RESUMO

Effective integration of research within healthcare organisations is recognised to improve outcomes. A research strategy within a hospital Trust in South West England was revised, following the launch of a national Chief Nursing Officer (CNO) strategy that promotes research engagement and activity. The aim was to develop, implement and evaluate this revised strategic plan for research. High-level engagement within the organisation was established and previous initiatives evaluated. A 6-year plan with 2-year targets was defined and evaluated at year end. The four pillars of the CNO strategy were central to the revised strategy, underpinned by digital innovation. Evaluation of the earlier strategy indicated excellent engagement with the Chief Nurse Research Fellow initiative and the Clinical Academic Network. The 'Embedding Research In Care' (ERIC) unit was reconfigured to an ERIC model, which aided question generation and project development. Year one objectives were achieved within the revised plan. Implementing a research strategy within an organisation requires a cultural shift and a long-term vision is required with measurable objectives. The team demonstrated significant progress through high-level leadership, mentoring and cross-professional collaboration.

RESUMO

Strengths-Based Nursing and Healthcare (SBNH) has garnered attention in the field of psychiatric nursing in Japan, yet its adoption in other nursing sectors remains limited. Japan is currently facing the formidable challenge of a rapidly aging population and growing demand for healthcare and welfare services. To address these issues, a shift from hospital-based care to comprehensive community care is underway, underscoring the importance of nurses in community settings, where focusing on client strengths is essential. Therefore, this paper aims to present research and practical examples to advocate for the broader dissemination of SBNH in Japan.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Biosocial approaches in nursing research have largely focused on the ways that social determinants of health influence individual-level outcomes, including symptom management, family and social support, and educational interventions. PURPOSE: Theoretical, methodological, and practical strategies are needed to expand current biosocial methods for nursing science and focus on upstream, structural determinants of health and the policies that underlie health inequities. METHODS: This paper summarizes presentations given at the 2023 Council for the Advancement of Nursing Science Advanced Methods Conference, Biosocial Methods to Advance Health Equity, in a panel titled "Individual, community, systems and policy related to biosocial methods." DISCUSSION: Nurses are uniquely positioned to examine upstream, structural determinants of health by leveraging expertise in biosocial methods, collaborating with interdisciplinary researchers and community members, and advocating for policy change. By conducting theory-grounded biosocial research, nurse researchers can significantly advance scientific knowledge and promote health equity for individuals and communities. CONCLUSION: Nurse scientists are conducting research using biosocial methods and provide recommendations for expansion of this approach in the field.

The Healthcare Research Group (HRG) of the Institute of Health Research San Carlos (IdISSC) was created in 2011, as an answer to the opportunity granted by health research authorities to create an independent research group as part of the institute from the start, which was taken strategically from the Nursing Management of the Hospital Clínico San Carlos (HCSC) of Madrid, creating two emergent groups, one for Healthcare Research and another for Research on Physiotherapy. The Healthcare Research Group is formed mainly by 41 persons from the teaching, management and care settings of the Hospital Clínico San Carlos and the Universidad Complutense of Madrid (UCM). Their three lines of research are of interest for the healthcare hospitalization, surgery and outpatient settings; one is called "Patient and Professional Safety", and its objective is "to identify the best practices, to optimize and/or improve care in order to minimize risks, both for patients and professionals", there is a "Therapeutic Education" line, with the aim to "research about the best practices that will ensure treatment adherence and health outcomes", and the "Healthcare Product Evaluation and Development" line, with the aim to "optimize and/or improve the use and design of healthcare products, in order to reduce iatrogenic mortality". Currently the HRG is completely integrated in the IdISSC as an emergent independent group, with presence in the decision-making boards of the institute, and with the immediate objective of becoming a consolidated group

Bibliography in qualitative research must come to live. The person that reads interprets. He/she is a reflective person that while reading is constructing a world view; creates analytic paths and theoretical avenues. Hence the value of bibliography does not rest on itself but on the act of reading. When to read and how to do it is going to be as important as what to read. There are three occasions, in which bibliography enters in a research study with a different objective on each occasion. At the beginning when the study is introduced, during the study when the analysis is developed and at the end when results are rendered. This paper explores the value of bibliography on each of them (AU)

RESUMO

Purpose. The needs and concerns of patients with advanced breast cancer are changing at every phase of the care intervention. Management and coordination of hospital resources and services are also steadily evolving. The objective of the present expert report is to define a new oncology nursing role specialising in advanced breast cancer, to help guide patients throughout the whole healthcare itinerary. Methods. A group of eight experts in oncology nursing and medical oncology defined the content index of the curriculum document. A systematic review of bibliography was carried out, and the relevant contents were extracted. Based on these contents and the participants’ experience, recommendations were formulated and validated through a Delphi questionnaire and a participative meeting. Results. The advanced breast cancer clinical nurse (ABCCN) should develop a clinical, psychosocial role focused on coordinating patients in the healthcare network. The nurse would be in charge of evaluating and supervising the care administered and the healthcare resources used. The ABCCN should be aware and participate in the protocols and available resources, be able to solve conflicts, deal with burn-out signs and have clinical, coaching and team-working abilities. The proposed curriculum provides a specific process for the care of patients, as well as an implementation process. Conclusions. The ABCCN’s role is crucial to assume the best care and the optimisation of available resources. This review and consensus document provides the required tools for the implementation in hospitals (AU)

Objectives: To identify barriers to the utilization of research as perceived by nurses at the University Hospital Alcorcón (HUFA) Foundation and their facilitators. Specific objectives: To assess the differences in scale scores THE BARRIERS depending on the different variables studied. Methods: A cross sectional study was conducted during May 2014. The study population were all nurses working in the HUFA. The questionnaire included THE BARRIERS scale of S.Funk et al. It was facilitated by an online survey distributed through the corporate mail hospital. Results: 69 nurses (16%) completed the survey, 67 surveys were valid. The barriers identified with the highest score were: «The nurse is unaware of the research» mean = 3.33 (SD = 0.89); and «Physicians will not cooperate with implementation» mean = 3.26 (SD = 0.86). Statistically significant differences were found in the total score of THE BARRIERS scale based on experience as a nurse, post-graduate training, and have made previous research. No significant differences were found in terms of other variables. Conclusions: Although lack of time is identified as the main barrier to research in most of the studies, here appears behind other as the unknowing of research or lack of cooperation. But lack of time appears as one of the main barriers in free text responses (AU)
